Monroviaourteen Liberian girls who have been the subject of a

major human trafficking case in Liberia may soon get
their day in court. FrontPageAfrica has learned that the
trial of individuals accused of trafficking the girls to
Lebanon is set to commence during the August Term of Court, AD
2015.
The four individuals including Abbas Debs, Tamba Gibson,
Bashir Lakis and Aja Debs (sp) have been jointly indicted by the
Government of Liberia to face trial for their alleged involvement
in cajoling the Liberian girls into traveling to Lebanon with the
hope of giving them better life only for them to end up in captivity.
Fourteen of the girls were successfully brought back home in
late March and since their arrival there have been calls for the
government to push charges against the accused as quickly as
possible.
FrontPageAfrica has gathered that only one of the defendants,
Abbas Debs is currently in prison while the remaining three are
said to still be at large. Trial of this case is expected to be heard
during the August term of Court, A.D. 2015-which commences
on the 2nd Monday in August, same being the 10th day, 2015, a
credible Justice Ministry source told FPA.
WHY THE DELAY?
Women groups including the Association of Female Lawyers of
Liberia (AFELL) and the Association of Female Journalist of Liberia
(FeJaL) have all been calling on the government to speedily bring
the perpetrators to Justice, decrying delay in ensuring justice for
the victims.
Esther Seton-Cee, President of the Association of Female Lawyers
of Liberia recently called on the Government to ensure that the
accused are brought to justice speedily.
We are calling on the government of Liberia, the judiciary to take
full responsibility to send those girls to court. Let us hear their
side and the side of the accused. We want to know both sides of
the story. As a women organization this is a case of interest to us.
We want to know who were involved and how those girls were
taken there, said Madam Seton-Cee.
Some of the victims also told FPA that they are afraid that
justice might not be achieved based on the fact that some of the
alleged perpetrators-Lebanese nationals have been boasting that
Liberian officials are in their pockets and they (Lebanese) cannot
be prosecuted in Liberia.
Grace David, one of the victims told FPA recently I cannot get
over it! Those people treated us worse than slaves for three years
and we cannot get justice? It is just as Bashir told us in Lebanon.
He said your government is in our pocket so nothing will happen
to my brother. If we even kill you we will add the 3,500 to your
body and send it home; your people can do nothing.
CHANGE OF VENUE DELAYED CASE

In a detail regarding the status of the case, sources at the Justice
Ministry hinted to FPA that the Grand Jury for Montserrado
County on April 30, 2015 indicted the defendants but the
prosecution filed a motion for Change of Venue but the Judge
indicated that the trial was not docketed for the February term
of court and therefore motion for Change of Venue could not be
advanced unless the trial is docketed.
Prosecution than moved swiftly to file a motion to advance the
case on the trial docket on May 15, 2015 and following several
oral and written requests to the court for the assignment of the
case, the Judge assigned the motion until June 10 after arguing the
motion for Change of Venue, the Judge did not rule until late June
2015, the source added.
According to the source, after the ruling in the Motion to Advance
was handed down, several follow-ups requests were made to
the court for the assignment of the Motion for Change of Venue
which was filed on May 5, 2015, since at the time of its filing, the
case was not on the trial docket but the court finally assigned the
motion for Change of Venue for July 7, 2015-over two months
after it was filed.
VENUE SET FOR BOMI
The source indicated that the prosecution requested for the
venue of the case to be changed from Montserrado County to
Margibi on grounds that if the case is heard in Monrovia, the jury
would become prejudice against the interest of the Prosecution
based on media reports about the case, which would draw public
sentiments owing to the fact that the jurors would be selected from
the very public, and also because of the proximity of its witnesses
who are been housed in Kakata, Margibi County creating extreme
difficulty to have them transported to court daily.
The state or defense on the other hand did not disagree with the
Change of Venue but requested the court to change the venue to
Bomi, Grand Bassa, or Grand Cape Mount Counties.
On July 13 the court ruled granting the Motion for Change of venue,
but venue the case for Bomi County, as the defense had requested,
instead of Margibi County as prayed for by the prosecution.
WHERE ARE ALL THE ACCUSED?
FPA has learnt that the remaining three accused two Lebanese
(Bashir Laki and Aja Debs(sp) are both said to be out of the
country and are currently in their home country, Lebanon.
Whereabouts of a Liberian, Tamba Gibson also accused is said
to be unknown but the Ministry of Justice source said efforts are
being exerted to bring all the accused to Justice.
It is not yet known whether there is an existing Extradition treaty
between Liberia and Lebanon to pave the way for the extradition
of the other two Lebanese nationals who have left the country.
An Extradition Treaty permits a country that is signatory to
such treaty with another country to request the transfer of an
individual from the friendly country to the other.

More than 50 young women were reportedly trafficked over the
period of three years to Lebanon to accordingly work as domestic
servants and sex slaves. Before leaving Liberia, some only girls
at age 16, 17 and 18 were told that they were going to work in
factories and supermarkets. Upon arrival in Lebanon different
people who had accordingly paid 3,500 United States dollars as
the price for their independence, freedom and the right to say no
to sex came at the airport to pick up their new slaves.
The story regarding the plight of the Liberian girls was first
reported by FrontPageAfrica in 2014 which led to huge public
attention.
The Government of Liberia took action by dispatching a delegation
comprising government officials to Lebanon where the first batch
of 14 girls were successfully brought to Liberia in March. The
government later announcement that it is pushing prosecution
against the accused.
Several international and local reports continue to highlight
abuse of human rights in Liberia including women and girls.
In its recent report the United States department of State reported
abuse of the rights of women and girls. According to the report
the Liberian government does not comply with the minimum
standards for eliminating human trafficking.
The government did not demonstrate overall increasing
efforts to address human trafficking compared to the previous
year; therefore Liberia is place on Tier 2 Watch List for a third
consecutive year,
But President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf speaking during the
celebration of the independence of the United States of America
on July 4 discredited the report saying it was based on media local
reports.
The girls are complaining that they have been stigmatized
by people who have seen their images in newspapers and on
television broadcast.
EYES ON JUDGE JOHNSON
When the case resumes this August all attention will be on
Criminal Court E Judge Ceainah Clinton Johnson to see how she
handles the proceedings.
The judge has come under sharp criticism from some Liberian
women in the past for her handling of cases related to abuse of
women and girls including rape.
Judge Johnson was accused of releasing Ali Sasouk who was facing
trial for alleged rape on US$25,000 bond. Many argued that since
rape is a non-bailable crime in Liberia a female judge should not
have granted bail to an alleged rapist.
Since his release from detention the trail of Sasouk is still hanging
in the air and the accused is believed to have left the country.

Real Ebola Heroes Missing

Out on Recognition
WHEN THE UNKNOWN enemy, the deadly Ebola virus
struck Liberia in early 2014 the entire nation was in a
state of complete confusion, not knowing how to deal
with the outbreak.
FROM MARCH TO JULY the death rate from the outbreak
had grown beyond imagination with health workers
mainly nurses, doctors, clinicians and other underpaid
health care practitioners facing the heat of the outbreak,
many succumbing to the virus on a daily basis.
MANY QUALIFIED DOCTORS left the hospitals in fear so as
other nurses too, who were not willing to risk their lives
in fighting Ebola when others were falling prey regularly
despite wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
EBOLA STRUCK DEEPER TAKING away some of Liberias
best doctors including Dr. Samuel Brisbane and Abraham
Borbor, still other health workers kept the courage
and remained in the Ebola Treatment Units to save the
lives of hundreds of Liberians and foreigners alike who
contracted the deadly virus.
IT WAS TOO LONG WHEN DR. STEPHEN IRELAND who
survived the virus cried neglect and lack of recognition
from the Government during his recovery process from
the virus.
NURSE CANDY KOLBA FROM C.H. RENNIE Hospital
survived the virus when she was administered the ZMAPP
experimental drug and upon leaving the ETU she vowed
to go back to the hospital to help save lives-which is real
sacrifice, from hell to service.
EVEN WHEN THE OUTBREAK was wild, nurses, clinicians
and other health workers were amongst the least paid in
the country some taking home a meager US$600 or even
far lesser despite the high risk associated with working in
these ETUS.
THIS IS REAL SACRIFICE when the returns cannot be
measured with the level of risk taken to do a piece of job.
IN SOME ETUS, NURSES happily wore PPEs when they
could not even get the hazard pay promised by the
Government of Liberia and partners.
THERE WERE MANY NURSES who were not on the
Government of Liberia payroll at some of these ETUs as
they took the work as a service to nation and humanity to
help their fellow Liberians stay alive.
SEVERAL NURSES DIED and today their children are
orphans and husbands and wives widowers/widows
with no program put in place yet by the government to
provide the opportunity for these victims to live a better
life after the death of their parents, wives, and husbands
or loved ones.
A FEW DAYS AGO, MANY of these nurses have to protest
before the Ministry of Health, blocking the main entrance
in demand of hazard pay.
THE MINISTER OF HEALTH Dr. Bernice Dahn later said up
to 99% of health workers have been paid the hazard but
the statement still leaves doubt when dozens of health
workers protested before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
in May followed by another at the Health Ministry in June.
AFTER THE VIRUS WAS finally defeated on May 9 came
the time for recognition of people who made the ultimate
sacrifices to save lives in the midst of real danger.
IN HER STATE OF THE NATION Address in January,
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf left out many heroes in the
fight against Ebola including Representative Saah Joseph
who was physically seen riding his private ambulances to
transport patients to ETUs.
WITH NO DISRESPECT to medical doctors including
Jerry Brown, Gorbee Logan and others who realistically
contributed greatly to the fight against Ebola, nurses,
clinicians, hygienists and others who were at the
forefront in the fight against Ebola have all been left out
of numerous awards and recognitions.

ong before the declaration of our Independence in 1847, the

freedom of our forebears to dictate their own political and
economic destiny was under hostage. For 25 unbroken years, the
sovereignty and self-governance of a land which would later be
known as Liberia was determined by an International Non-Governmental
Organization (INGO) called the American Colonization Society.
After several years of hard labor and inhumane treatment in the United
States, the chain of slavery was finally untied from the hands and legs of
black slaves. In 1822, a new territory in Africa call Liberia was founded
by the ACS to accommodate freed black slaves. I can imagine how though
it was for these settlers to safely sail on a dark continent like Africa. Even
though it was difficult traveling long distances, but nothing could easily
bend their determination from seeking refuge in a new home where
freedom was accessible.
On February 6, 1821, the first batch of 88 immigrants left New York and
harbored in Liberia. This was a new beginning of establishing a young
nation. Upon the arrival of these settlers, they met indigenous occupants
on ground with unique cultural pattern and values. Americo-Liberians
were gently given an olive branch by original owners of this soil at the
time. As a result of indigenous kindness and generosity, AmericoLiberians had breathing space to co-exist on the Providence Island.
After few months, the interest of these strangers grew larger. Their quest
for expansion became a paramount priority. The memory of slavery was
still fresh on their minds. As a result, they had no intention to unite with
those they met on ground. Instead, colonists thought it was a good idea to
promote disunity and disintegration by subjecting the natives to unjust
and inhuman treatments.
Internal bickering and power struggle became the order of the day. There
were series of wars between the colonists and indigenes. This was a bitter
start for Liberia! I think if two parties (both natives and settlers) were
going to cordially cultivate unity from the very beginning, our country
would have been a better society. Regrettably, deep division characterized
the formation of Africas first Independent nation.
From 1821 to 1847, Liberians were indirectly ruled by foreigners. From
the Colonial to Commonwealth era, the determination of self-governance
was invisible. The British and French also took advantage of a conflictridden settlement by encroaching on our land. Even though there was
segregation, but delegates from various colonies were ready to embrace
an independent status after two and the half decades of external control
and threats. Their readiness was uncompromising!
A new and lone nation in Africa was finally given birth to at an official
constitutional convention held in 1847. There were 12 delegates from
Montserrado, Sinoe, and Grand Bassa Counties who subsequently
adopted the declaration of independence and constitution on July 16,
1847. At long last, on July 26, 1847, a young African American man from
Virginia named Joseph Jenkins Roberts declared the colony of Liberia an
Independent Republic. The Lonestar rose above Africa as an inspiration
to other colonized territories. Our country became known worldwide
from that moment. Many saw us as a symbol of hope and a shining star of
democratic radiation in Africa.
I am left to wonder why Long Peter, Sao Boso, and other native Kings didnt
participate in this crucial convention even though they were an integral
part of the society. It is left with you to answer this question. Despite
the situation, there were unique promises made during Independence.
Those promises are still loud in our ears and can never be forgotten. The
promise of self-determination, security, freedom, peace, unity, equality,
dignity, justice, and civil liberty were guaranteed in one voice by the
founders and forefathers of this state.
After 167 years of existence, the question that seems too hard to answer
in some quarters is HAS OUR INDEPENDENCE MET ITS PROMISE? I
want to emphatically say NO! The promise of Liberias independence is
still lingering in the wilderness of uncertainty. After more than a century
of political endurance, where is democratic inclusion where is equality
where is economic freedom where is Justice - where is unity where
is patriotism where are all these good promises? The state remains at a
standstill whenever self-seeking economic migrants excel to prominence.
Our past and present as a nation clearly show the lack of political will
to uphold and defend these fundamental promises of our independence.
The significance of preserving our sovereignty goes beyond everyones
interest and imagination. Overtime, most citizens have lost appetite
to celebrate Liberias birth anniversary simply because they believe
that it is worthless to be happy in the midst of poverty and hardship.
Independence Day is meant to revive national courage and restore broken
hopes. Independence renews good memories of economic, political, and
social transformation. Independence means for everyone regardless
of your status to have access to basic social services. It also means to
equitably distribute national resources. Other countries around the world
are eager to celebrate their independence because the promises of their
independence are still in tight!
Recently, Americans happily observed their independence because
the promises of America yesterday are still upheld today. Due to the
conducive political and economic environment existing in Ghana, there
was a nationwide independence celebration on March 06 of this year.
I saw smiles on the faces of Ghanaians. They had sufficient reasons
to commemorate such a special day. Their flag was high up in the sky
projecting an emblem of a progressive and inclusive society. How
can Liberia boast of being 168 years old when most of its citizens are
subjected to economic deprivation, marginalization, and destitution?
How can we brag of being the trendsetter of Independence in Africa, when
our economy is at the verge of collapse? Why arent we growing along
with our age? This is a big shame to Africas first Independent Republic.
Even though we have abundance of natural resources with a very small

directly exposed to the virus are the ones receiving all the
accolades while gallant nurses and other health workers
sit and watch.
THE SITUATION IS SIMILAR to the tale of a Dump truck
transporting materials to construct a mansion which it can
never enter after completion because of its big size when
other smaller vehicles can make their way through.
IN ALL OF THESE MANY HONORS, no nurse, hygienist or
clinician has been mentioned.
NURSES, HYGIENISTS, clinicians who physically catered
for Ebola patients and were directly exposed to the
population, our country remains one of the poorest on earth. I refuse to

accept that this sweet land of liberty is cursed!
The countrys greatest problem has been its leaders. Most politicians
in Liberia careless to improve the living standard of ordinary people.
They go extra mile to achieve their selfish political ambition and enrich
themselves through ill-transparent practices. They lack integrity to
protect the constitution which guarantees the inalienable rights of all
citizens.
It is very unfortunate for our leaders today to forget the promise of
self-determination. Patriots like Hilary Johnson and J. J. Roberts made
sacrifices to secure the status of nationhood for Liberia. The destiny
of the oppressed majority is still imprisoned by members of the elite
class. This country belongs to all Liberians; as such, divisiveness and
class system must come to an end. The principle of egalitarianism is an
unparalleled catalyst of national healing and reconciliation. Everyone
must be given a fair chance to chart his/her own course politically,
socially, and economically. Realities in the recent past and now suggest
that our country has not aspired to the level of self-determination. What
a promise betrayed! When our sitting President said in her first inaugural
address that she looks forward to see Liberia becoming a success story of
America, did the president really calculate the implications? For me, that
was an understatement. When the story is written about how America
through Firestone has and continues to exploit Liberia and its people for
89 years now, I wonder what will the president say.
The promise of Security, Peace, Equality and Freedom has been suppressed
by elitists and imperialists. The society is still insecure. Without security,
it is impossible to achieve economic growth and democratic sustainability.
Due to poor security system, criminal rate is high on the increase. The rule
of law is not taking root because some enforcers of the law are unaware
about the law. The rights of impoverished citizens are mostly infringed
upon by higher-ups. I thought the framers of our constitution said
everyone regardless of your social status should have access to unlimited
security and Justice. Regrettably, the rich and powerful continue to enjoy
maximum security and justice at the expense of ordinary peasants. With
the draw-down exercise of UNMIL, our nation stands at serious security
risk. I hope this government under Madam Sirleafs rule will mitigate this
gap.
Though the objective of our founding fathers was to establish a country
of peace and tranquility, but after 167 years, peace amongst Liberians
is invisible. Peace cannot come when one group of people are being
unfairly treated. Peace can only come when everybody has access to equal
opportunities and privileges.
We fought war in this country due to dissatisfaction and discontent. We
had no reason to kill each other for 15 years. Sadly, we had to thread
the path of civil unrest because certain individuals felt they were more
citizens than others. Certain individuals felt that the presidency was a
family inheritance. As a result of this, greedy politicians took advantage
of the situation by infiltrating the ignorance and gullibility of our people.
Today, the innocent blood of over 250,000 Liberians who were victimized
by this senseless crisis is crying out for Justice. Our peace still remains
fragile as the symptoms of displeasure and public discontent continue to
undermine national reconciliation. Reconciliation is possible, but through
sincerity, honesty, justice and transparency. We cannot be preaching
reconciliation why corruption in public service is evident. We cannot be
preaching peace when our hydrocarbon resources are abused. We cannot
promote togetherness when our educational system is messy. We cannot
sing the song of freedom when our health sector is poor. We cannot
preach unity, when the gap of economic equality is very wide. If we are
given the opportunity to freely and equally vote, we must also be given the
opportunity to freely and equally share in our nations wealth.
We have achieved political freedom to some extent, but where is the
economic freedom? Our current dilemma is more economical. Until we
can fight to gain economic independence, our political situation will
continue to shift downward. Liberia cannot get better when the hope and
aspiration of our Independence are decaying. This country is far from
getting better when our young sisters are sexually enslaved and trafficked
by foreigners. A just and equal society procreates peace and unity. The
failure of politicians over the years to pledge their uncompromising
loyalty and allegiance to Liberia has led to an uneven nation.
Noticeable indicators in Liberia have made most Liberians to lose taste
about celebrating Liberias birth day. We know how they feel right now.
We share in their sorrow, pain, and agony. We empathize with street
children, widows, teachers, students, shoe-shine boys, wheelbarrow
pushers, taxi-drivers, marketers, push-push riders, petit traders, car
loaders, rock crushers, and all less-fortunate citizens who are in serious
economic torment. Dont give up Keep holding on! Change is on the way.
Why must Liberia be the 7th poorest country when its soil is blessed
with abundant natural resources? Liberia according to transparency
international 2013 barometer report was rated as the most corrupt
country along with Mongolia in the world. Over 80% of Liberians live
below the line of poverty, while 85% are unemployed. We have more than
16 billion direct foreign investments, but the living condition of our people
is awkward. Why must we celebrate independence when 66 out of 68
concession agreements did not meet the minimum standard of the PPCC
and PFM laws? Liberias inflation rate is 7.30% while import rate stands at
$2.457 billion. I wonder where we stand with all these downward trends.
There is nothing to celebrate because the hope of our independence is
unseen in practical terms. We call on all Liberians to peacefully protest on
July 26 by boycotting all national programs around the country. 168 years
is enough to transform our condition. Join us to fight against nepotism,
corruption, patronage, injustice, and inequality.

will go down in history as the real heroes and heroines.
OTHER INSTITUTIONS and organizations also played lead
role in the Ebola fight but they are also normally left out of
these awards.
We believe many of these awards are given to white collar
individuals some of whom never really came close to an
Ebola patient. While their contributions in galvanizing
resources and arranging many activities are laudable, the
frontline soldiers deserve recognition too.

While the financiers, prosecutors, and fighters are in the
Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary, and some in our foreign
embassies, security sector, corporations, etc. the immensity
of the effort would ironically be destabilizing for the nation.
The country isnt ready for such agonizing scrutiny. Thats
why an option was for EJS to use good governance bring
about recompensing reconciliation. Nobody likes anyone who
reminds I told you so! Nonetheless, this advice is reminiscent
of one written by my operational staff at MNS in a memo to the
then CIA Director, William H. Webster, who was visiting Liberia
around September 1989.
President Bush had signaled a new policy, yet our regime was
asking Mr. Webster for logistical support. Anticipating that it
was foolhardy, our memo warned that the pending insurgency
would lead to unintended consequences. I personally delivered

But our historical ethnic and cultural animosities have made

Since cessation of hostilities in 2003 Liberians have not
taken definitive measures to prevent a repeat of another civil
madness. The absence of war in Liberia currently, which is only
due primarily to the presence of UN Troops on the ground, does
not equate to peace. To believe other-wise is a complete illusion.
Unlike Sierra Leone, Rwanda and other countries where in
the post-conflict period maximum attention has been given
to tackling the root causes of the violence in order to ensure
deterrence; Liberia, on the other hand, has done just the
opposite. Those who orchestrated the mayhem are now ruling
the country and dictating the pace of reconciliation. This is
no way to restore peace following a brutal war where more
than 200,000 civilians were murdered and almost the entire
population uprooted.

CDC NEEDS A STRONG

ALLY TO WIN IN 2017
The Editor,
he CDC wins in a landslide victory if it

puts on the ticket the no nonsense former
Auditor General of the General Auditing
Commission, (GAC) Mr. John Morlu either
as President or Vice President. I still maintain
that Mr. Morlu was/is the only most principled,
professional, trusted, honest person to have worked
in the government since the now corrupt President
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf took office in January 2006.
But that will not be enough to win the 2017
presidential elections by CDC. The National
Elections Commission (NEC) and the Supreme
Court of Liberia are extensions of Ellen's ruling
dis-Unity Party and if the opposition parties
don't press for changes on the NEC, they will be
singing the Blues in the 2017. The record of the
NEC speaks for itself in both the 2005 and 2011
presidential elections. Why and how the political
parties allowed a former ID card carrying member,
Jerome Korkoya of Ellen's ruling Unity Party who
contested for a Legislative seat on the Unity Party
ticket to chair the supposedly nonpartisan NEC is
mind boggling?
The only reason Mr. George Weah won the December
2014 Montserrado County senatorial election was
because the outcome was not even close. It was a
political tsunami of a victory that the NEC could not
try any shenanigan. Notice that President Sirleaf 's
aborted Decree #65 contained provisions that
said NEC elections results could not be challenged
"until after 30 days" when declared "winners" shall
have already taken the oath of office, and the losers
must thereafter file complaints to the NEC and then
later to the Supreme Court, a process that could
take months?
Any attempt to have denied Weah and the CDC
the victory in December would ended the Sirleaf
regime from a people power protest revolution. So
the NEC knew better and could not declare Ellen's
son Robert the winner.
Now, we know if the elections are free, fair and
transparent, the CDC will win the 2017 presidential
elections as it did win the 2005 and 2011 races but
was cheated by the NEC, and my critics can argue
that till judgment day. Ellen herself confessed to
how the 2005 elections were rigged in her favor,
of all places, here in America at the historic black
Abysennia Baptist Church in Harlem, New York City.
Then there was the famous November 2011letter
to the CDC from former NEC Chairman James
Fromoyan in which he said he and the NEC had

cooked the books and switched the numbers by
giving CDC's first place votes to runners-up Unity
Party of Ellen.
When CDC demanded an open recount of the votes,
the NEC said no and protest by CDC supporters
on their party headquarters compound resulted
to the November 7, 2011 massacre of CDCians
by government police. Former Police Chief Marc
Amblard who took the blame was later rewarded
with a $150,000.00 no-bid security job at Roberts
International Airport. Indeed Liberia, what a sweet
country where crime pays for some.
So the CDC should dancing even before 2017
because Ellen is the master of dirty politics in
Liberia from her role in the bloody civil war to how
she cleverly out maneuvered and delivered Taylor
to the International Criminal Court and her clever
manipulation of the outcome of the two presidential
elections. Ellen will make sure she turns power
over to her chosen crony who will not go after her
for corruption, let alone who would implement the
TRC recommendations that will send Ellen to join
her former battlefront rebel commander, General
Charles McArthur Gangay Taylor now locked away
for life in an British jail.
CDC must recruit credible Liberians for 2017 that
the outcome will be so overwhelming that the NEC
won't try any Deedeba, or else. And if the results
are so close, the NEC will declare Ellen's anointed
successor "winner" and its argument would be that
the CDC didn't cry foul when it declared George
Weah winner in the senatorial races over Robert
Sirleaf, son of the President So why now accuse
the NEC of cheating the same CDC in the 2017 prepresidential elections? Think hard CDC for the
political game is now underway. Don't wait till it
is too late. Call John Morlu, Kofi Woods, Tiawon
Gongloe, Jerome Verdier, Togba Nah Tipoteh and
other credible Liberians and it will be a tsunami
victory in 2017. As for those who say Weah doesn't
know "book", we see now what the bookish Ellen
from Harvard University has done to our country.
Da the book the hungry Liberian people will eat?
Don't say I didn't warn you in advance. Da me again.

the world as individuals use
firearms to cause havoc for
innocent people.
On a daily basis there are
reports of shooting and deaths
of people in many countries
with some of these incidents
tied to terrorism and others
illegal possession of firearms.
In some countries there are
law prohibiting the illegal
discharge of firearms while
other countries have in place
laws on the possession of
firearms.
For Liberia, there is currently
no law in place to regulate the
manufacture, sale, possession,
transfer and use of small arms
and light weapons.
Liberia only has in place
the United Nations armed
embargo on the country
imposed since the regime
of former President Charles
G. Taylor but the embargo is
expected to be lifted by the end
of 2015 should the UN finds it
suitable.
The New Defense Act of 2008
nullified the 1956 Firearms
Act creating gap and President
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in recent
years issued Executive Orders
some of which have already
expired.
Executive Order N0. 34
extended the effect of a
previous Executive Order (No.
28) imposing a total ban on
the ownership, possession,
use, sale or manufacture of
small arms and ammunitions
in Liberia with the exception
of 12-guage single barrel
shotguns used solely for
hunting, provided that such
weapons were registered with
the Ministry of Justice through
the office of Superintendents
in each county.
SEVEN
MONTHS
AT
LEGISLATURE
The act which has been at the
National Legislature for the
last seven months pending
passage into law is seeking to
ensure that no individual in
the country possess firearms
unless licensed by the Liberian
National Police and the Small
Arms Commission.
No person shall, as of right,
be entitled to the grant of
any license or permit under
this chapter, or have in his
possession or under his
control any small arm, light
weapon or other related
material except in accordance
with a license issued by the

Director and the Commission.
No license or permit shall
be granted by the Inspector
General and the Commission
if it is substantiated that the
applicant is disqualified by
law or under regulations of
the commission. All classes
of licenses shall require
submission of an application
that shall meet criteria
prescribed by the commission,
section 11.8, Part II, general
licensing provisions of the act
states.
The Act is also seeking to
have classification of licenses
including broker license, dealer
license, manufacturer license,
possession license, repair
license, shooting instructor
license, transport license, and
international transfer licenses
such as import, export, transit
and transshipment licenses.

access to markets and basic
social services is a key ingredient
in the fight against poverty.

for the rehabilitation of the 49

Firearms and Ammunition
Control Act of 2014 to help
the country address the issue
of the licensing, handling
and control of firearms and
ammunitions in the country.

The proposed Small Arms
act is also proposing that the

investment
can
create
opportunities for the poor
directly through employment in
labor-based road construction,
rehabilitation and maintenance.
Ambassador Malac said, Better
roads also mean that people
can significantly reduce the
inordinate amount of time spent
travelling short distances on bad
roads. Also, improved roads can
lower the relatively high cost of
rural transportation, which often
strains the meager income of
rural dwellers.
The U. S. diplomat maintained
that her government remains
strongly committed to working
with the government of Liberia
to achieve the countrys
transportation
development
agenda as outlined in the Agenda
for Transformation (AFT), the
National Decentralization Policy
(NDP) and the Transport Master
Plan (TMP).

and
other

of conflict in Liberia and the
new Act is pushing for stronger
punishment for the illegal

dedicated to the fight against
the Ebola virus from Liberia,
thus recognizing and honoring
the heroes and the heroines
that fought against the Ebola

out that Liberia is still a great
nation despite the reservations

some may have about some
practices ingrained in the
countrys cultural baggage, and
called on Liberians to celebrate
those who have stood out to

Gbarnga he second day of the Joint Sector Review (JSR) of water
sanitation and hygiene began early Thursday morning.
The annual meeting is usually held forum style where
people representing various communities across Liberia
can come out and dialogue with their local representatives about
various issues. Those who helped make this years meet possible
were among a rising group of young entrepreneurs in Liberia.
This group seeks to innovate and change the way things are being
done in Liberia and often does things that have never been done
before. From the keynote speaker to the team that made the JSR
a professional and organized display for presentation, there is no
denying that the business savvy, under 40 crowd is finding new
ways to bring about change.
Its set up with a panel of experts this year rather than a question
and answer as in previous years, said Abdul Koroma. The 32
year old Banga resident is the National Coordinator for Water
Sanitation, he was appointed to the position in 2011 and has held
it ever since.
Sanitation was the theme to be discussed for this years JSR.
Koroma launched a campaign that promotes hand washing in
Liberia. In a country where access to clean water to wash with
can be scarce it is a huge mission.
It would seem we are poor on organization, and national
planning for results but Liberia is doing very well in that area,
said Koroma.
Koroma spent time working as a Geographic Information
Specialist (GIS) in Kenya, Sierra Leon and other parts of Africa.
My job was to document the hand washing ports around the
country and I realized Liberia didnt have this capacity, said
Koroma. Rather than being deterred, Koroma left his post at
GIS, which put him touch with multinational organization such
as UNICEF and the European Unions (EU) Water Framework
Directive (WFD) to develop the water sanitation sector in Liberia.
I told my manager maybe I need to bring this capacity to my
home country.
Soon funders and international partners, such as the European
Union began to take notice of the work that Koroma was doing.
2011-2012 was a marathon of touring around the world,
representing Liberia at every water event in world, said Koroma.
As a part of the water sanitations current campaign, they are in
part responsible for the country wide chloride solution hand

As important as the water sanitation teams effort was, so was the
branding of the campaign and event.
I was told that with out the branded materials, this event would
not have been a success, said Menekenu Waritay of the JSR. In
Liberia visuals and something that people can take home are
critical to the success of an event.
The 30 year-old self-taught graphic designer, Waritay supplied
the t-shirts for staff working the event, banners, flyers, and just
about every piece of branded material for the campaign.
With limited supplies and much innovation Waritay produces
graphics and prints across several mediums.
When I was asked to make these awards, I found that the closest
machine to make these is in Ghana, he said holding up some of
his handy work. Waritay managed to produce the order by using
thermal heat transfer paper. Recipients of the awards seemed
pleased with the work and staff proudly flaunted their shirts,
buttons and lanyards.
Waritays work has landed him contracts with both local
businesses and multinational companies such as Oxfam and
Chevron. The small-scale business is generating a market for
goods made in Liberia.
Although, Waritay and Koroma are working in very different
professions the drive to make Liberia a better place drives both
of them to do the work that they do with integrity. It is this
autonomously lead effort that will lift up Liberia as a place to do
good business in the case of Waritay. And build upon the vital
infrastructure by managing and providing clean water for all
citizens, as is Koromas aim.
As both self-made men continue their pursuits in their respective
professions, both helping and being helped by the communities
they live in and beyond there is a hope that other young Liberians
can follow their lead.

their faces, youths from several
regions in Liberia gathered
for their closing celebration for the 2nd
annual Peace Through Fair Play Youth
Camp (TFPYP) in Monrovia.
The height of the celebration came
with speeches and life stories of
professionals from several people include
FrontPageAfrica Managing Editor Rodney
D. Sieh, Starz CEO Latim Dathong, Isatu
Bah- Kenneth, a Law Enforcement Officer,
and Srimex CEO Musa Bility.
All of the panelists career stories were
inspirational as some of the children
expressed great satisfaction with the
presentations.
Outlining his challenges FPA Managing
Editor, Sieh said as a journalist he
stepped on people toes which caused
him to be arrested.
Selling his career, he stated that though
he got arrested, his aim was not to scare
the kids away from the profession stating
nobody will know about what you do
until the media informs the public.
Starz CEO Dathong stated With
technology everything is associated
with electricity, my biggest challenge
is electricity and not one person in this
hall uses their phone without electricity,
which I see as a challenge to me.
Madam Bah- Kenneth, of BIN said
stereotyping is her challenge as her male
counterparts have continuously told her
that security is not a career for women.
Representing the nursing career, Dr.
Wilhelmina Jallah owner of Hope for
Women said taking care of her home and
been a professional woman is challenging.
Two of my challenges are the difficulties
in taking care of my home and my career.
And how you tell somebody that their
relative is about to die. Saying that there
is nothing you can do because this man is
going to die, said Dr. Jallah.
Speaking earlier, the Executive director of
the Gbowee Foundation Liberia Madam
Williametta Saydee Tarr commended
the parents for allowing their youths to
attend the camp.
She said in TFPYP was created when the
organization noticed that few Liberian
youths engaged in extra curriculum
activities. The organizers stated that their
attendance to the camp broadened their
knowledge and added on to what they do
not learn in school.
Today we are extremely happy that we
are able to host the camp this year, the
youths tour the Legislature, Supreme
Court, Bomi County where the children
learn about culture and respect, she
states.
Madam Tarr added: We are fostering
peace, respect for the rule of law,
accountability and creating peace

Gbowee Foundation Panelists Encourage Youth on Career path

Ambassadors so that they can impact knowledge to their peers in

communities.
President of Gbowee Foundation, Leymah Gbowee applauded the children
for their attendance. There were eight disabled children who participated
with able-bodied children.
We took some blind children because the society we understand we live in,
there are children with disabilities and if we are teaching them fair play they
will respect blind children so we recruited 4 blind and 4 deaf and kids from
the schools.
Other dignitaries at the program included Former Information Minister
Emmanuel Bowier, River Gee Senator Conmany Wesseh, and Monrovia City
Corporation Mayor Clara Doe Mvogo, among others.
