CAD assignment

Overview:
Computer-Aided Design (CAD) technology has nowadays become part and parcel of a design activity
in a range of sectors including product design, interior design, architecture, production layout, just to mention
but a few. One of the most widely used commercial CAD package is Autodesk AutoCAD. With this software
package one can create two-dimensional (2D) drawings and rendered three-dimensional (3D) virtual models.
Another technology which is being widely used is Rapid Prototyping (RP) which generates physical
prototypes directly from CAD data. Imagine that you can hold a physical model in your hands just a few
hours or even minutes, after you created a 3D CAD model of your design idea in CAD! This 60 hours course
offers the basic training required to generate 2D drawings 3D virtual models using AutoCAD.

Who should attend?

This course is intended to anyone who is seeking to acquire skills in basic 2D and 3D modeling
features of AutoCAD, and who is interested in understanding how physical models can be obtained directly
from CAD. In particular the course is suitable for anyone working in one of the following areas: architecture,
interior design, product design, building services and manufacturing.

Benefits to you in future carrier:

The course will prepare you to sit for the Solid modeling (CAD/CAM). The course will equip you with
skills on how to create professional 2D drawings and provide you with the foundations to create 3D models.
Having personnel trained on these aspects, will certainly be of a great benefit to employers.
Companies will get the know, how to efficiently and rapidly communicate the design solution being
developed to their clients, by means of professional drawings and 3D physical models.

Learning outcomes:
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
Get acquainted with the graphical user interface of AutoCAD
Understand and apply the basic 2D drawing and modify commands in AutoCAD
Apply different selection methods and tools
Understand how to manipulate 2D and 3D objects
Understand how to annotate a 2D drawing with dimensions, text etc.
Create layers and blocks
Create 3D models by applying the relevant AutoCAD functions
Acquire knowledge on how to exchange drawings and 3D models using neutral file

formats

Plot and print a 2D drawing to scale

Acquire knowledge on how to prepare a 3D CAD model for rapid prototyping
Understand the basic steps required to obtain a physical model on a 3D printer

Rationale:
Now a day a manual drafting is obsolete in industry. Computers being the inevitable part in an
engineers life due to its inbuilt characteristics which helps him to do various task with acceleration. Using
computers and CAD software it is easy to create and modify drawings ultimately it saves time. It also may be
useful to generate assembly and manufacturing drawings. In mechanical industry operating skills are required
for computer aided drafting operations of machine components, handling of printers & plotters. This subject is
also useful to apply concepts in 3 D modeling.

General Objectives:
Students will be able to
1) Draw, edit and modify 2D drawings.
2) Give dimensions, tolerances and geometrical tolerances.
3) Draw Isometric drawing and 3 D drawing.
4) Plot a drawing.

CHAPTER 8 EXERCISES
1. Polylines
Use the Pline command to complete the drawing shown in Figure ME8-1. The Pline should be
continuous and the R2.00 radius is created with the Pline Arc option. SaveAs CH8EX1-M.
Figure ME8-1

Figure ME8-2

2. Plate
Complete the drawing of the
plate in Figure ME8-2. Use
the Line command and begin
at point 2,2. The center of the
4.50 diameter Circle is
obtained by calculating the
distance starting at 2,2. (For
example, the X value would
be 2 + 1 + 2.5 = 5.5 and the Y
value would be 2+1+1.5 =
4.5.) Add the additional
Circles using the same
method. SaveAs CH8EX2-M.

3. Hinge Bracket

Complete the drawing of the hinge bracket in Figure ME8-3. It may be helpful to draw some
construction lines in order to position the Arcs correctly. Erase the construction lines when the
Arcs are complete. The outer two object lines are drawn using the OSNAP Tangent option from
the large Circle on the right to the outer Arc on the left. SaveAs CH8EX3-M.

Chapter 11 Exercises - Mechanical Engineering

CHAPTER 11 EXERCISES
1. Zoom, Pan
Open the R300-20.DWG drawing file supplied with AutoCAD 2000. It is normally located in
the C:/Program Files/Acad2000/Sample folder. Activate the Model tab. Next, use Zoom Extents
to display the model completely on your screen. Next use Zoom Window and select an area
around the completed assembly (located in the lower-left corner of the drawing). Next, Zoom
with the All option, then Zoom in to the same area as before using realtime Zoom and Pan (if you
have a wheel mouse, use the wheel to accomplish this). Do not exit or save the drawing.

2. View
In this exercise, you will save the view that you generated in Exercise 1. Use the View command
to produce the Views dialog box. Select the Named Views tab, then the New button. Enter
ASSEMBLY as the new name and select OK.
Next, Zoom, All. Then Zoom into the spring (yellow) located near the center of the exploded
view assembly. Save this view using the same method as before and assign the name SPRING.
Zoom, All once more. Using the View dialog box, restore the ASSEMBLY view and the
SPRING view to ensure they are properly saved. Do not exit or save the drawing.

3. Viewres, Syswindows
With the R300-20 drawing open, also Open the SINGLE CAVITY MOLD drawing located in the
Sample folder. Activate the Model tab. Notice that four views have been created in this one
drawing. Zoom in to the drawing on the left. Zoom in further to display the text (red) in the
upper-left corner of the drawing that says VENT TYP AS SHOWN .002. Pan slightly to
display the fastener above the text (black and blue). Does it appear as three polygons (hexagons
or octagons) in continuous lines? Type in VIEWRES and change the value to 2000 to display the
fastener as three circles with both continuous and hidden lines. Finally, use the Syswindows
command (or Window pull-down menu) with the Tile Vertically option to display both drawings on the screen simultaneously. Finally, Close the R300-20 drawing but do not save changes.

4. Vports
With the SINGLE CAVITY MOLD drawing still open, maximize the drawing window within
the AutoCAD drawing area. Make sure the Model tab is active. Next, Zoom All. Use the
Vports command to produce the Viewports dialog box. Select Four: Equal viewports. Doubleclick in the upper-left viewport and use Zoom Window to zoom in to and display only the
drawing on the far left. Use Zoom Window in the other three viewports to display the other
three drawings, each in a different viewport. When finished, Close, but do not save the
drawing.
