Objectives

To create a photodesign piece in Photoshop.

Demonstrate photography and photo editing skills.

Process

I began the photo design project by deciding on a theme

for my piece. I wanted to make sure the time I spent taking
photographs was worthwhile. My son is nine and a huge fan of
cub scouts. He is so enthusiastic about it he was happy to dress
up in his uniform and model for me. I think the photo works
so well because he is naturally proud to be in scouts. I shot
the photo with a Canon Coolpix p500 camera. I used Adobe
Photoshop to edit the brightness levels, colors and sharpness
of my photo. I chose to use complementary colors, indigo and
gold, as they went so nicely with the scout uniform. I used the
eye dropper tool to pick a color and then adjusted it slightly to
gain a richer version of the color I picked. I incorporated the
color swatches with the design, placing them into the gold bar at
the top of the page. I repeated the colors in my design elements.

Objectives

Set-up a two-sided brochure in InDesign.

Create a text wrap around an image.
Learn how to use paragraph styles in InDesign.

Process

I began by sketching out my ideas on paper. I created a band

of red that flows along the bottom of the brochure. The waves
repeat inside and when the tri-fold opens its first page the wave
meets with the next page to create a seamless wave across
the two pages.
I created a gradient for the background in Adobe Photoshop.
I set up a tri-fold design in Adobe InDesign and added my
background gradient. I used the quick-selection tool in Adobe
Photoshop to remove the background of the boy and the
astronaut, refined the edge and placed it into Adobe InDesign.
I used the text wrap feature to wrap my body copy around the
image to create an interesting body copy shape.
I created my logo for the brochure in Adobe Illustrator using the
type tool and pen tool. I drew an illustration of a rocket and
then chose two contrasting fonts to create the name. I created a
line between the name and the description to organize the
logo better.

Objectives

Create a custom logo for a company.

Use the pen tool in Illustrator.
Develop a logo that relates to the company and visually
communicates the message of the company.

Process

I began by sketching out ideas for a company name. This was

the longest part of the project. I wanted to find a name that
would incorporate two themes together. On choosing a name I
liked I began to sketch ideas for designs. I then worked in Adobe
Illustrator to create the logos. I took an image of a football and
used the pen tool and convert anchor tool to trace around the
middle part. I then created greater than and less than signs to
complete the shape. I used the color wheel to help pick color
schemes. I tried a lot of different fonts before choosing a slab
serif which I felt looked academic but kid-friendly.

Objectives

Create a custom business card for a company.

Use tools in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign.
Develop a business card that communicates a clear logo and
contact details of a company.

Process

Using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign I displayed the

contact information and logo in a clear legible typeface. On the
back of the card, I created a door opening in so it felt like we
were on the outside of the room looking in. I added the text
my door is always open. The door has a light drop shadow on it
to make it stand out.

Create a custom letterhead to match the business card.

Use tools in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign.
Develop a business card that communicates a clear logo and
contact details of a company.

Process

I created a concept by sketching it out on paper. In Adobe

Illustrator I used the pen tool to draw a picture of a chair for the
logo. Using the pen tool I created walls and an open door in the
background to give the chair context.
I copied and enlarged the logo of the chair and placed it at the
bottom right hand corner. I set the opacity to 6%. I kept the font
the same throughout the design but used different weights to
create hierarchy and contrast.

Event Ad

A full-bleed color event ad to promote a fundraising event, using

a scanner, an image of our choice and Microsoft Word.

Epson Scanner

Objectives

Create a full-bleed event ad promoting a fundraising event.

Learn to use advanced tools in Microsoft Word.
Use a scanner.

Process

I scanned an image I liked from a magazine at 300 dpi as I

wanted to enlarge the section of the image I was using. I inserted
the image into Microsoft Word and duplicated it. I then cropped
the top image to one-third of the size on the right. I applied a
filter that made the image appear sketched and applied a soft
edges effect to make it blend in with the original photo.
Using Microsoft Word I created a large bold title and aligned
the body copy on the right with the admission on the top right.
I placed a black box behind the white text to give focus to the
admission prices.
I created a shape to draw your eye from the title up to the
admission section, it is a diagonal shape which then levels
out over the body copy. This grouped the white space. I think
it resulted in a cleaner more crisp design. I used the rulers in
Microsoft Word to ensure all of the alignment was crisp.

Objectives

Use Adobe Photoshop to apply filters to images.

Demonstrate non-destructive editing.
Create a montage in Adobe Photoshop with no hard edges.

Process

In Photoshop I cropped an image to 8.5 x 11. I reduced the

redness in the photo with an overlay filter. With the lasso tool I
cut out the image of the Savior and added a mask to the layer. I
used non-destructive editing to remove the edges of the Savior
and blend the image to the background using a soft brush and
black paint at 40% opacity. I continued to reduce the opacity to
work away hard edges.
I duplicated the image of the Savior and applied the multiply
filter to the top layer and a linear light filter to the bottom layer.
I added the clouds and applied the multiply filter and a layer
mask. I used a soft brush at 20% opacity and 50% flow to blend
the clouds to the background image. I opened the picture of the
temple adjusting levels, vibrance and selective color. I applied
a layer mask with an overlay filter. Using a large soft brush at
30% opacity and 50% flow I worked away hard edges to blend
seamlessly into the background. I used an old style font for my
quote and a sans serif font for the author. I finished my design
by adding a white solid line border 1/2 from the edge.

Objectives

Use HTML and CSS to create a one-page web page with custom
colors and fonts to match the logo.
Demonstrate HTML and CSS skills.
Use Adobe Photoshop to find the Hex numbers of the logo.

Process

I created this web page using Textwrangler. I used HTML and

CSS to create a one-page web page with custom colors to match
the logo and co-ordinating fonts. Using CSS I chose background
colors and font colors to match the logo. I used Photoshop to
color pick the colors from my logo and find out the hex numbers
to match my web page colors. I used CSS to change the hover
color of the hyperlink to my blog. I checked my CSS using
http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator to correct any errors.
I chose web-based fonts from the Google fonts list to ensure
my choice of fonts were compatible with web browsers. Using
Photoshop I aligned a screenshot with .5 margins to showcase
the web page.

Objectives

Create a flier that draws attention to the intended audience.

Demonstrate a creative layout in Adobe InDesign using the
principles of design.

Process

I began by sketching different layouts for my design. I chose

the sketch I was the most interested in and created it in Adobe
InDesign, using an image, title, logo and body copy that was
given to me. I created a large black box to act as a background
to my title and to create white space. I used contrasting font
sizes to bring emphasis to the phrase Do you want to have the
competitive edge in business? under the subtitle. I varied some
of the font size to add rhythm on the page. I cropped a picture
and aligned it to the right side of the word Graduate and
aligned the event details with the right side of the picture.
