The readings remind us

that God is a Good Shepherd
and as a Good Shepherd He
redeems, guides, and provides for His people. As followers of Christ, we too are called to guide and
shepherd one another. The readings, therefore,
challenge us to use our God-given authority in the
family, in the Church, in work place, and in society, with fidelity and responsibility. In this conduct, pastoral ministry today is wider that includes
not only the pastoral care given by those ordained
as priests and religious or people in lay associations, but the loving service given by all Christians
who follow different callings to serve and lead
Gods people.
In the first reading, the prophet Jeremiah is hard
on Israel's careless leadersthe king, some priests
and some court prophetsbecause they have
shown no concern for Gods people, especially the
poor. They failed repeatedly to care for, guide, and
nourish Gods people. This failure of religious
leadership is one significant reason for Judahs exile. The prophet foretells that in the unknown future, after the cleansing disaster of destruction and
captivity, the Lords flock will have a true and
righteous shepherd. This new shepherd-king will
finally rule as God always intended. The second
reading introduces Jesus as the shepherd of both

the Jews and the Gentiles and explains how Jesus,

the good shepherd, reconciled all of us with His
Father by offering himself on the cross. Paul also
speaks about another reconciliation between the
Jews and the Gentiles, brought about by Jesus who
has accepted both into the same Christian brotherhood.
The reading from the Gospel of Mark presents
Jesus as the good shepherd fulfilling Gods promise given through his prophet Jeremiah in the first
reading. Here we see Jesus attending to his weary
apostles, who have just returned from their first
missionary work, while at the same time expressing his concern for the people who, like sheep
without a shepherd," have gathered to meet him in
the wilderness.
The Christian life is a continuous passage from the
presence of God to the presence of people and back
again. Prayer is essentially listening to God and
talking to Him. We should allow God the opportunity to speak to us and recharge us with spiritual
energy and strength by setting aside enough time
for Him to speak to us and for us to speak to Him.
Finally, there can be no true Christianity without
the proclamation of the Gospel. Teaching the
Word of God is essential to a Christian community. As a shepherd of

Prison Ministry is an amazing spiritual and corporal work of mercy. For so many of these men, love
was missing in the early parts of their lives. Come
and be present for them on a Saturday morning
and see if it is something in your heart to do once
a month.
On Saturday mornings the Catholic men of Donovan Prisons Yard C gather in the chapel for
Mass or Communion Service. Three of the Saturdays per month there are two rotating visiting

Have you noticed the changes to our alcoves? Through the generosity of donors,
stained glass windows with six saints are being crafted at this time. The alcove openings
have been raised to allow the stained glass
windows to be seen while in church. Arched
corners have been added to compliment the

I Love A Clean San Diego needs help assembling boxes of supplies
for our September countywide event, Coastal Cleanup
Day. Volunteers will report to our office in Liberty Station to help us
pack up bags, gloves and more for our 100 cleanup sites. Sign up for a

17 through Thursday, August 20 from 10:00 am4:00 pm.

2015-2016 RELIGIOUS ED REGISTRATION ~ PRE-SCHOOL-CONFIRMATION

Register now before fees increase in July! Registration will continue
Monday through Friday throughout the summer. Registration will take
place in the Catechetical Ministry Office from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm.
What to Bring: Fees and your child's baptism certificate, if not already on file,
are due at the time of registration. Special Note: Families who are not registered
at Santa Sophia must provide a letter from their parish priest giving permission
to attend Santa Sophia's religious education classes.
Prerequisite for Confirmation Level I: Completion of Religious Ed Level 8 or
graduation from a Catholic elementary school.
Prerequisite for Confirmation Level 2: Level I candidates must bring their
Sponsor Eligibility Form completely filled out, signed and sealed by the sponsor's parish priest in order to register for Level II.
The Grocery Outlet in Casa de Oro is holding their annual
"Independence from Hunger" food drive again this year.
During the entire month of July, shoppers can purchase a
pre-filled bag of groceries to be donated to the Saint Vincent de Paul food pantry. Patrons also have the opportunity to donate by purchasing a voucher for $1.00, $5.00 or $10.00 at store registers. As always, all
groceries and proceeds stay in our community to help our neighbors in need.
The grocery outlet is open everyday from 7:00 am - 9:00 pm and is located at
9805 Campo Road, Suite 110 in Spring Valley.

Giving Made Easy

Electronic giving or e-giving is becoming popular as an emerging offertory option for parishioners. The parishioners here at Santa Sophia continue to make e-giving an increasingly popular method of giving. This
demonstrates that people are becoming more familiar and comfortable
with e-giving. Electronic giving in all its forms provides convenience to
parishioners and donation consistency to the parish. The benefits of egiving are numerous:

Our gifts are expedited, the system simplifies the accounting process
for the parish and strengthens the parishs base of regular support.
It encourages commitment and faithfulness of people to the parish.
It helps parishioners to prioritize giving in their budgets and helps
them make an advanced commitment.
It saves the parish money on mailing offering envelopes and processing checks. It therefore saves human resources which allows
those resources to refocus their time on other parish activities.
It is easy and convenient. It gives members an automated and practical way to easily prioritize giving in this fast-paced world in which
we live.
It creates a positive impact on the environment. An enormous
amount of natural resources are consumed in the production, processing, and disposal of paper checks. Studies show that electronic
payments have already produced more than a 50% decline in check
use since the year 2000.

Most online giving programs offer a recurring giving feature that allows online donors to schedule their church donations weekly, biweekly
or monthly. When all the options to give are available and donors are
free to set their own dates or days to give, either monthly, weekly or
biweekly. This enables parish to have a steady inflow of income on
which it can depend throughout the year. Many churches using e-giving
program have reported a steady collection, especially during the summer when many families go out of town or are simply too busy with
other activities. Instead of having to make arrangements for your contributions while you are out of town, you can use e-giving to continue
your gifts without interruption.

Donate button, located on the left side of your computer screen. If you
