EARTHEN VESSELS

2 Cor 4:7-12 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God,
and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;
Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always bearing about in the body the dying of the
Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are alway
delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. So
then death worketh in us, but life in you.

I. WHAT TREASURE?
A. What is the most valuable thing in this world?
1. 1 Peter 1:18-25
18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain
conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for
you,
21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and
hope might be in God.
22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the
brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth
for ever.
24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower
thereof falleth away:
25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto
you.

2. 2 Cor 4:5-6 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for
Jesus' sake. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to
give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

B. The Gospel clearly is the most wonderful and valuable thing in this world.
1. Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to
every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

2. 1 Cor 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are
saved it is the power of God.

3. 2 Cor 6:3-10
3 Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:
4 But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities,
in distresses,
5 In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings;
6 By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,
7 By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,
8 By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true;
9 As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed;
10 As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all
things.
4. 1 Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his
abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the
dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for
you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last
time.

II. WE HAVE THIS TREASURE IN EARTHEN VESSELS.

NT:3749 ostrakinos (os-tra'-kin-os); from ostrakon ["oyster"] (a tile, i.e. terra cotta); earthen-ware, i.e.
clayey; by implication, frail: KJV - of earth, earthen. (Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and
Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003 Biblesoft, Inc. and

NT:4632 skeuos (skyoo'-os); of uncertain affinity; a vessel, implement, equipment or apparatus (literally
or figuratively [specifically, a wife as contributing to the usefulness of the husband]): KJV - goods, sail, stuff,
vessel. (Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew

A. Let us understand our respective position in regard to God.

1. John 3:28-31 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent
before him. He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth
and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
He must increase, but I must decrease. He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the
earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

2. Isa 55:6-9 Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the
wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and
he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not
your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the
earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

3. Matt 22:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the
power of God.

B. We as Christians are earthen, but cleansed by the word.

1. 1 Peter 1:22-23 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto
unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: Being born
again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for
ever.

III. THAT THE EXCELLENCY OF THE POWER MAY BE OF GOD AND NOT OF US.
A. All greatness and wisdom is of God.
1. 2 Cor 1:12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly
sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world,
and more abundantly to you-ward.

2. Rom 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think
of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every
man the measure of faith.

3. 1 Cor 4:6 And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your
sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be
puffed up for one against another.
B. The world needs the power of God, not man’s wisdom.
1. 1 Cor 2:1-5
1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you
the testimony of God.
2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.
4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the
Spirit and of power:
5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

C. The world needs the light that originates with Christ and shines through us.
1. John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth
me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

2. Luke 11:33-36
33 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a
candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.
34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but
when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.
35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.
36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the
bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

3. Col 1:9-14
9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be
filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in
the knowledge of God;
11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with
joyfulness;
12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in
light :
13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

Invitation: Hear, Believe, Repent, Confess Christ as the Son of God, Be

Immersed for the remission of sins, and then grow in the grace and knowledge of
Jesus Christ, remaining faithful until death.

If you are a Christian and have sinned publicly, then you are invited to
remove your separation from God by public repentance so that prayers can be
offered with you and for you.
