limit of elasticity, ductility, hardness, durability, suitability for the intended
service and best engineering practice. All materials shall comply with the latest
applicable standard of ASTM unless otherwise specified or approved by the
Engineer.
All materials that develop defects during or after fabrication shall be rejected
notwithstanding that they have previously passed specified tests and
inspections, and met the applicable requirements stated herein.
Use materials of size and thickness as shown in the Plans. If not indicated, use
materials of required size and thickness to produce adequate strength and
fasteners to support assembly.
Fabricate items to be exposed to view of material entirely free of surface
blemishes by grinding or by welding and grinding prior to cleaning, treating,
and finishing. Ease exposed edges to a radius of approximately one (1)
millimeters (1/32 inch) unless otherwise shown.
Joints shall be fabricated accurately for close fit. Weld exposed joints
continuously unless otherwise indicated or approved. Dress exposed welds
flush and smooth. All welds shall be according to the applicable provisions as
stated herein.

concrete.

b.

Isolate non ferrous metal surfaces to be permanently fastened in

contact with ferrous metal surfaces, concrete, or masonry by coating
non ferrous metal surface with bituminous mastic, prior to
installation.

c.

Fit and set fabricated metal work accurately in location, alignment

and elevation securely fastened in place.

d.

Set loose items on cleaned bearing surfaces, using wedges or other

adjustments as required. Solidly pack open spaces with bedding
mortar or grout.

4.10.4.2

FIELD TEST

Following the completion of each gate installation, the gates shall be

operated through at least two complete open-close-open cycle. If an
electric or hydraulic operator is used, limit switches shall be adjusted
following the manufacturers instructions.
4.10.5

MEASUREMENT/BASIS OF PAYMENT

Fabrication, supply and installation of gates in the Bill of Quantities are a

lump sum item. No measurement of area will be made for such item.
The accepted quantities measured shall be paid for at the Contract unit price
for the gates Pay Items that is included in the Bill of Quantities. Price and
payments shall be full compensation for furnishing all labor, equipment, tools
and incidentals necessary to complete the Work prescribed in this item.

ITEM 4.11
4.11.1

RIPRAP/SLOPE PROTECTION
GENERAL

4.11.1.1

DESCRIPTION

The Work under this item includes providing all labor, materials, tools and
equipment necessary for furnishing and placing a protective covering of
stone, as shown on the Plans, or as directed by the Engineer.
a.

Stone Riprap
This riprap shall consist of individual rock fragments, dense, sound
and resistant to abrasion and free of cracks, seams and other defects

that would tend to increase unduly their susceptibility to destruction

by water action.
b.

Grouted Riprap
Stones for grouted riprap shall consist of rough uneven quarry stone
as nearly rectangular in section as possible. The stone shall be sound,
tough, durable, dense, resistant to the action of air and water, and
suitable in all respects for the purpose intended.

4.11.2

MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS

4.11.2.1

STONE RIPRAP

Furnish durable field or quarry stone that is sound, hard, dense,

resistant to the action of air and water, and free of seams, cracks, or other
structural defects. Use stone pieces with a length and width no more than
twice the thickness. Place materials in lines, dimensions and grades as
shown on the Plans. Do not place stone riprap without the Engineer's
approval of the stone quality, size, and shape.
The rock fragments shall not be compacted but shall be unloaded by
crane and graded of in manner to ensure that the larger rock fragments
are uniformly distributed. The smaller rock fragments shall fill the spaces
between the larger fragments, resulting to compact uniform layers of
riprap of the specified nominal thickness.
Do not drop riprap from such a height to cause. Prevent mixture or
incorporation of dirt or other materials with the riprap during placing
operation. Placing of riprap by any method, machine or hand, will be
permitted as long as specified requirements are obtained except placing of
riprap in slope parallel layers to obtain required thickness or otherwise
specified by the Engineer. Placement shall be done in such a way as to
obtain the required thickness at each point in a single operation.
Except for the rock and small fragments to be used as wedges, the rocks
shall be irregular cubic shaped and the smallest dimensions of a given
piece shall not less than one third of the largest dimension.
4.11.2.2

GROUTED RIPRAP

Grouted riprap and boulder lined channel edge shall be placed at the
locations as shown in the Plans and installed with the following
requirements:
a. The sub-grade to receive each boulder shall be excavated and any
unstable material shall be removed. Approved material shall be placed
and compacted in requirements as mention in ASTM D 698 to reestablish the sub-grade of each boulder. Unstable material shall be
removed from the site and disposed of by Contractor. Care shall be
taken during compaction to avoid disturbing and/or damaging the
integrity of the boulder channel edge. The top of all boulders shall be
as indicated in the Plans. Finished grades and sub-grades for boulders
will be determined from the height of each boulder used.

b. The boulders shall be carefully picked and arranged so that adjacent

rock surfaces match within two (2) inches in top elevation and two (2)
inches along the vertical exposed face or channel side of rock.
Boulders shall be placed such that adjacent boulders "touch" each
other to minimize voids and grout placed between boulders.
c. Placement of small rocks shall be approved by the Engineer prior to
grouting. Before placing the grout, any type of debris, fines, smaller
rock, or silt shall be removed from around or under the boulders.
d. Dewatering shall be implemented to guarantee that the grout will not
be placed in water and for a period of twenty four hours after the grout
has been placed. Keep boulders receiving grout wet at all times prior to
receiving grout. The concrete grout shall be placed by injection
methods by pumping under low pressure, through a two-inch
maximum diameter hose to ensure complete penetration of the grout
into the void area. Grout will be placed up to eight inches from the top
of boulders, or as directed by the Engineer. The Operator shall be able
to stop the flow and will place grout in the voids and not on the
surface of the rocks.
e. Grout shall be troweled out and finished to minimize visibility. Clean
and wash any spillage before the grout sets. The visual surfaces of
boulders will be free of grout to provide a clean, natural appearance.
Make sure all voids are filled between the boulders.

4.11.2.2

CURING

If hot or dry weather, the masonry shall be satisfactory protected from the
sun and shall be kept wet for a period of at least three days after
completion.
4.11.3

METHOD OF MEASUREMENT

The quantity to be paid for shall be the number of cubic meters stone masonry
complete in place and accepted. Projection extending beyond the faces of the
walls shall not be included. In computing the quantity for payment, the
dimensions used shall be those shown on the Plans or ordered by writing by
the Engineer. No deductions shall be made for weep holes drain pipes or other
openings of less than one square meter in area.
The quantity of masonry, determined as provided in the section above, Method
of Measurement, shall be paid for at the contract unit price per cubic meter for
stone masonry, which price and payment shall be full compensation for
furnishing and placing all materials, including mortar for masonry, for all
necessary excavations, and for all labor, equipment, tools and incidentals
necessary to complete the item.

be set in a vertical position. Corner and pull posts shall be braced in two
directions. End and gate posts shall be braced in one direction.
Where alignment changes thirty (30) degrees or more, a corner post shall be
installed. All posts shall be placed the minimum depth below ground as shown
on the Drawings or as required by the standard specifications. Posts shall be
set plumb and firm to the lines and grades shown on the plans. Backfilling
shall be thoroughly tamped.
