Stoughton Area School District

Gifted program
reaches many students
Scott De Laruelle
Unified Newspaper Group

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction mandates that public schools districts identify the exceptional needs of advanced learners
with a formal K-12 process. At the Stoughton
Area School District, however, the idea is to try
to include as many students in that process as
possible.
A well-grounded TAG (Talented and Gifted) program supports many types of learners,
said SASD director of curriculum and TAG
program coordinator Judy Singletary. The key
is knowing that one size does not fit all.
Singletary said while labels such as gifted
or talented can evoke a feeling of exclusiveness or elitism, the districts TAG program is
about meeting a wide range of academic and
social-emotional needs for a wide variety of
learners.
The districts belief in inclusive practices
means that all students have the opportunity

Sharon Mason-Boersma retired June 1 from her Joining Forces for Families social worker position, in which she served families in the Stoughton,

Mason-Boersma reflects on retirement as JFF social worker

Perhaps shes served you pancakes

at the Kiwanis breakfast or greeted you
at the Personal Essentials Pantry. Or
maybe youve heard her address topics
of homelessness, underage drinking or
affordable transportation and housing at
meetings for Stoughton Area Resource
Team, Stoughton CARES or Stoughton
United Ministries.
This is just a sampling of the many volunteer activities Sharon Mason-Boersma

has been involved in since she moved

to Stoughton in 1981. More than just a
familiar face, shes earned the trust of
and helped thousands of struggling families in the Stoughton, Cambridge and
Deerfield areas as a Joining Forces for
Families (JFF) social worker.
Her supervisor, Ron Chance, community programs manager at Dane County Human Services, has worked with
Mason-Boersma since the inception of
the JFF initiative, which helps stabilize
families, and said shes a pretty incredible person.

Shes a fierce advocate for lowincome and vulnerable families, he

said. Very few people have I met with
her composure and integrity.
After 17 years in a profession she
loves, Mason-Boersma made the difficult decision at age 66 to retire June 1.
She is clearly irreplaceable the Jane

She will be sorely missed.

If Holly Pitas had a dating profile, it likely wouldnt

say, enjoys long walks.
But after breast cancer took
a good friends sister in 2002
shes done just that walking
39 miles throughout Chicago
over two days beginning July
4.
I like to walk, but I like to
take an enjoyable walk, Pitas
said. To walk three miles
or even five miles, I think is
pleasant and comfortable to

Courier Hub

walk 26 miles is actually very

difficult.
Pitas and her friend were
participants of the AVON
39 walk to end breast cancer. During the walk, participants cover 39.3 miles total
throughout the city walking
a full-marathons worth on
the first day and a half-marathons worth on the second.
But it wasnt as simple as
strapping on a pair of shoes
and putting one foot in front
of the other. Pitas had to train
for the walk, all while still
running her business, a home

that provides foster care for

adults around the Utica area
with cognitive impairments.
Since she couldnt be gone
for long periods of time, she
would do laps a few miles in
one direction, come back to
check on the home, and then
do a few miles in the other
directions.
One day recently, one of
her neighbors stopped by, and
she told him she was training
for the event.
He said Youre really
going to walk 39 miles? and
I said Yeah, Pitas said.

solicited the donations from
everywhere, particularly her
business contacts, receiving
donations of varying sizes
including, up to $1,000.

At 9 years old, Cole Sarbacker is finally able to

is a typically an opportunity for most kids to save up
some well-earned money
after spending the spring
getting their animals ready.
But the new Triangle

has a different plan in mind.
He will be donating all of
his profits to the Stoughton

his market lamb, BooBoo,
on Thursday.
Sarbacker has been wrestling since he was 4 years
old, so when police found
in May that Stoughton
Wrestling Clubs funds
were being misappropriated, he wanted to do something to help.
His mother, Candi Sarbacker, said she was very
proud when Cole told her,
I have plenty of years to

They have been talking to
potential bidders and sharing their story in hopes that

Active shooter

Dog daycare gets

commissions OK

Volunteers from the school district

and city offices played victims
as part of the drills, held at the
Stoughton Area School District
administration building.

Council will vote

later this month

There were four different scenarios,

city human resources manager Amy
Jo Gillingham said in an email to the
Hub.

Mark Ignatowski
Unified Newspaper Group

In one scenario a husband with

PTSD showed up at his wifes work
and started stabbing people. With
this exercise, officers de-escalated
the situation and used verbal commands and less deadly weapons
such as an electronic stun gun.
Several other scenarios included an
intruder in the school with a weapon,
a terrorist in the school with chlorine
gas and explosive devices.
Officers went through the training
exercises with people they normally
work their shifts with to simulate
working as a team.

Some victims had active roles in the drills, helping to guide the police towards where the shooter
was last seen.

One of the scenarios involved a shooter with explosives.

Third times likely a

charm for a couple who
plans to open a dog daycare in Stoughton.
After not getting support from the citys Planning Commission in May,
Nicole Hines and Jordan
Tillesons plan for a daytime dog-watching business will get a chance to
appear before the Common Council July 23. The
plan could be met with
some public resistance,
based on a public hearing
Monday, but city reaction
to the latest plan has been
mostly positive.
Commission member
Ald. Ron Christianson
(D-2) said he was glad the
couple kept searching for
a place to open their business in Stoughton.
I want to thank you for
working so hard to stay in
our community, he said.
Youve found a place
thats a lot more appropriate for this to exist in our
community.
The couple had submitted an application earlier this year to open in
the citys Business Park
North, but the cost proved
to be too great. A second location, in the old
Waters Edge tavern on
Water Street, did not get
the commissions favor
because it was thought to
be a bad fit for the downtown business area.
The latest spot 556 E.
Main St. is a former lumber storage facility with an
office area, located across
the street from the Stoughton Area Youth Center,
itself a former warehouse,
and next to the railroad
tracks.
Despite the commissions unanimous support, some neighbors did
express concerns at a

project plan. The city had
spent more than two years
negotiating with Forward
Development Group of Verona, but before last month it
agreed to negotiate roughly $5
million worth of public investment with the anchor retailer
Wal-Mart.
Stoughton Forward members contend that the changes
would require another public
hearing and another round of
approvals.
Stoughton Forward is in the
midst of a fundraising campaign to pay for the legal costs
of the suit which will be at
least $5,000 and possibly two
or three times that, Davis said
in the news release. The group
is also looking for citizens to
list as plaintiffs in the case.
If the lawsuit is filed

public hearing Monday

about the facility. One was
concerned about fencing
and noise issues, while
another thought the facility might reduce property
values because of potential
noise.
The couple received
support during the public hearing from both the
building owner and a construction company that
would share the building
with the dog daycare.
Hines and Tilleson
assured commissioners
the facility would be run
with those concerns in
mind. They said the fencing would keep the dogs
from being distracted and
barking at passersby and
that they would consider
adjusting the hours that
dogs would be outside
playing based on neighborhood feedback.
The facility will have
supervised play time for
dogs, who will be separated into groups based
on size and activity level.
Dogs will be able to rotate
into resting areas, according to documents submitted by the couple. There
will be indoor and outdoor
areas for the dogs to play,
however, no overnight
facilities will be provided
at this time.
City planning and development director Rodney
Scheel said approval of
the conditional use permit
could allow an occasional
overnight stay, but if that
sort of activity became the
principal use of the facility, the couple would have
to come back to the city
for a new conditional use
permit that would reflect
the kennel activities of the
business.
Hines said as the business grows, there might
be an interest in kenneling
animals, but the current
plans do not call for overnight stays. The business
plans to be open from 7
a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday
through Friday.

Friday, July 17 as planned,

the city would have 20 days
to respond, according to Wisconsin state statutes. Court
proceedings would likely then
be scheduled if the city chose
to respond.

Hold Your Tongue

A wise friend of my father had a rule
about speaking, which was to always
ask before saying something if it was
true, if it was kind, and if it was necessary. He was a man of few words, but
very highly thought of by family and
friends. Most of our daily conversation
would fail his test, especially on the
grounds of kindness and necessity. The
test of necessity is perhaps the hardest
to pass: will the words I am about to
utter be helpful or edifying. Think about
how much of our conversation is about
our own ego, trying to make ourselves
seem clever while knocking down those
around us. Once spoken, words cant
be taken back, and even if we do retract
them they are like the bell that cant be
UN-rung. Our words often come back
to haunt us. People will remember
things we may have said in an offhand
manner years before, and like a sharpedged boomerang, our words have
come back to take our head off. So, we
should think twice before speaking, and
consider whether what we are about to
say is true, kind and necessary.
Christopher Simon
Do not let any unwholesome talk come
out of your mouths, but only what is
helpful for building others up according
to their needs, that it may benefit those
who listen.

Going deep in must-win game

Stokstad, Gartzke deliver

for As against Evansville
Jeremy Jones
Sports editor

With a complete roster at his disposal for only three games this summer, Utica Home Talent manager
Dale Vike hasnt been surprised with
his teams lack of run support at
times.
Saturday, however, the As found
just enough offense to pull out a 5-2
Southeast Section victory against
Evansville. It was a game fourthplace Utica needed to have any shot
at a postseason berth next month and
supplied some much-needed offense
for spot-starter Christian Stokstad.
Stokstad, who was making only
his second appearance of the season
and his first Sunday start, struck out
two while only allowing two earned
runs on nine hits.
I thought Id be out in right field
when I woke up this morning, but I
always like pitching, he said. I was
able to locate my fastball and it kind
of all starts from there.
Rather than feeling rusty with so
few innings under his belt this summer, Stokstad said it may have actually been beneficial, my arm felt
great.
With ace Kyle Bates, Dane Schultz and Jason Hougan out of the lineup Saturday, the As were left with
Stokstad as their only pitcher with
HTL experience.
The veteran went the distance,
while outfielder Max Gartzke, who
would have probably had to throw
relief if Stokstad faltered, belted a
3-run home run Saturday to push
Utica past Evansville.
There was a little pressure to
throw the complete game, but theres
always pressure when you pitch,
Stokstad said.
Kevin ODonnell singled to rightcenter field to lead off the fourth
inning and then advanced to second
two hitters later as Evansville threw
away a possible double-play ball at
second base.
Gartzke followed that up by going
with a belt-high fastball over the outside corner and depositing the ball in

home run.
I think we were just due as a team
to put some runners in motion. I just
got a pitch I could handle, he said.
I didnt know it was out. I never do.
I just put my head down and run. I
was just hoping Kevin would tag up
from third.
It wasnt until he heard the home
crowd react and saw the second base
umpire that he knew for sure.
It was huge, but I think it was
more important for Pope (Stokstad)

to keep them in check on a spot

start, Gartzke said. I cant remember the last time he started a Sunday
game and he threw a complete-game
of two-run baseball.
The As trailed 1-0 through 2 1/2
innings before second Doug Vike
ripped an RBI single to score leadoff hitter Andy Martin in the bottom
of the third.
Stokstad singled and took second
on a wild pitch to lead off the eighth.
Gartzke then walked before being
cut down on a fielders choice at

second. Brad Ashmore singled home

a Utica insurance run one batter later
as the throw from the Evansville second baseman pulled Rasmussen off
first base.
Evansville left one on base in the
fifth, sixth and seventh before finally breaking through for a run in the
eighth.
Jeremy Rasmussen walked Jon
Frey singled and Garth Coats cut
the As lead in half with a second
straight RBI single.
The Jays threatened in the top of

the ninth, loading the bases with

three singles after first baseman Brad
Ashmore opened the inning with a
great sliding catch in front of the As
dugout.
Representing the tying run, Rasmussen laid down a sacrifice bunt,
which Stokstad fielded cleanly to get
Schlangen at third base.
Stokstad got Brookes Baumberger
to line out to Gartzke in left to end
the game.

Merchants rally with nine runs but fall one short at Albion
Jeremy Jones
Sports editor

Home Talent fans that wanted to

see plenty of offense were treated
to quite a display on a humid Sunday afternoon in Albion as Stoughton and the host Tigers combined
for 19 runs on 35 hits
Despite a feverish rally late in
the game, the Tigers found a way
to make their early lead holdup
and tookacrucial Southeast Section game 10-9.
Designated hitter Austin Mades
finished 4-for-5, while leadoff hitter Aaron Laskowski, Josh Eastman and Kris Agnew each had
three hits for the home team.
Laskowski and Mades
each knocked in three RBIs for
Albion, while Eastman drove in a
pair as Albion saw its leadoff hitter
reach base in all but two innings.
Its tough when youve got the
lead-off guy on base every inning,

T.J. DiPrizio highlighted the

five-run sixth with a two run single
that scored Max Fuller and Ryan
Nyhagen. Fuller reached base on
an error by Albion third baseman
Jim Eastman to lead off the inning
before Nyhagen followed with a
single.
A second error by Eastman and
a Laskowski error in center field
plated a third run before Simon
Maurice loaded the bases with an
infield single. Winder Fuentes was
hit by pitch to score another run
before a wild pitch by Josh Eastman plated Rory Menzer. Stoughton ran its way out of a potentially

And thats what Stoughton did, the help of three Tigers errors.
Stoughton scored four times in

the eighth, but would come up one

run short as Agnew closed it out
for the Tigers.
Menzer and Maurice collected
back-to-back singles to lead off the
eighth before Jake Wenzel plated
both with a one out, two-run double. Fuller drove Eastman from the
game with yet another single.
Hanson and Nyhagen welcomed
Agnew to the game with RBI singles, which were credited to Eastman. Agnew got out of the inning
without any further damage, striking out Brad Knickmeier and getting pinch hitter Scott Nachreiner
to line out.
The Tigers jumped all over the
Merchants and starter Jeremy

a Mades two-run triple, a Marty

RBI single by Eastman gave Albion a 4-0 lead in the second inning.

the fourth gave Albion a 5-0
advantage.
Albion looked primed to
ring up a 10-run victory early after Laskowski gave the
Tigers a commanding 8-0
lead in the fifth inning with
a bases-clearing double that
plated Agnew, Johnson and
Evan Deegan.
Theyre a good hitting
team, but they were hot
today, Seffens said. I dont
know how many batters we
had two strikes on, but just
couldnt get that third on
them. Theyd slap the ball
and find a spot.
The Tigers more than
slapped the ball though, collecting four extra base hits.
Lucas Gregory improved
his record to 3-0 on the
season, allowing just one
unearned run. After 2 1/3
innings of work by Eastman,
Agnew went to the mound
and earned his second save
of the season by hurling a
scoreless 1 2/3 innings.
Dunnihoo got the start
for Stoughton and last 4
2/3 innings, allowing seven
earned runs on 12 hits. He
walked one and struck out
two. Reliever Erick Sperloen
threw the final 3 1/3, giving up two earned runs on

He hit the ball and had

too many guys on base
early, Seffens said. The
guys fought hard and certainly didnt quit. We had

our chances out here today.

Youre going to have days
like this. Albion was just
hot. You cant take anything
away from us. We hit the
ball and scored runs. We just
fell one run short.
The win put Albion (101) alone atop the Western
Division of the Section by
a game. Stoughton fell to
10-2.
Fourth-place Utica and
Albion play two this weekend with the As hosting the
Tigers on Saturday before
traveling to Albion at 2 p.m.
Sunday. Utica is still in the
hunt for a playoff spot.
While the top two teams
from each half of the section
automatically qualify for the
playoffs, last year the section expanded the number
of playoff spots by adding
the next two teams based on
record regardless of division.
That will be a big weekend and weve got McFarland at home, which is
always tough, Seffens said.
There are some big games
coming up.Stoughton hosts
Albion in two weeks.

The Merchants fell 7-2
against Mount Horeb/Pine

Section Night League action.

Utica: As remain alive in playoff hunt

Continued from page 7
The win improved Utica,
which hadnt played in three
weeks following a rain out
and forfeit by Deerfield, to 7-3
a game behind McFarland
(8-3) in fourth place with a
crucial doubleheader coming
up against Albion this weekend.
Albion (10-1) is coming off
a 10-9 victory over second
place Stoughton (10-2). Utica
hosts the Tigers at 1 p.m. Saturday before traveling to Albion at 2 p.m. July 19.
Weve got to win every
game the rest of the way,
starting today, Stokstad said.

Today was a big win, but

next weekend they get much
bigger. We cant let a game
go.
Stoughton hosts McFarland on Sunday. The top two
teams from the Western Division of the Southeast Section
advance, as do the top two finishers from the East Division.
Lake Mills (7-4) sits in first
of the other side with Fort
Atkinson (5-4), Clinton (5-5)
and Jefferson (5-7) still in the
hunt.
It seems like theres been
somebody missing for something, but hopefully we can
put something together now
because we cant afford

anymore losses, Dale Vike

said. One more loss could
put us out of it.

Wedding venue opens in old tobacco warehouse

Mark Ignatowski

Something old. Something new. Something new

is open in an old space on
Stoughtons Main Street.
The Lageret a wedding
and event venue held its
first wedding last weekend and is ready for more
events this summer and
next year. In a nod to both
Stoughtons culture and
history, lageret is Norwegian for warehouse.
Owner Jamae Ramsden
said while opening the new
venture at a former tobacco
warehouse has been stressful at times, she thinks the
venue and its old-meetsnew feel will be a draw for
many people.
Weve been getting
inquiries like crazy,
Ramsden told the Hub the
week after the events first
wedding.
Ramsden who manages
the event center owned by
STI Holdings, parent company to Stoughton Trailers
said more than a dozen
events already have been
booked for next spring and
summer.
As with any new business, some details are still
being worked out, Ramsden said. But Ramsden is
no stranger to the wedding
business. Shes worked for
17 years a floral designer.
Ramsden operates Flora
Designs by Jamae out of
her in-home design studio.
Getting the business
going while working her
floral business during
that industrys busiest time
of the year has been a
challenge.
But shes used to the
stress and is looking forward to settling into more
of a rhythm once they get a
few events under their belt
I feel like its going to
be successful, she said.
Those connections in
the wedding industry will
also be helpful as Ramsden
markets the space to wedding planners and vendors.

The Lageret, 515 E. Main St., is a former tobacco warehouse converted into a wedding and event center.
An alter made from an old ladder in the building can be a good
place to hold a wedding ceremony.

The Lageret has been featured on wedding websites

such as Style Me Pretty and
The Knot.
The warehouse wedding
venue brings some elements of the popular barn
weddings a rustic, oldtimey feel but in a larger
space with more amenities, Ramsden said. A barn
wedding usually requires a
tent to fit all the guests and
doesnt always have running water, electricity or
heating and cooling. Warehouse weddings have those
modern comforts and are
on the cutting edge of wedding trends, Ramsden said.
Venues exist in Chicago
and Milwaukee, but the
Madison area doesnt really have the right space, she
said. The Lageret hopes to
fill that niche.
The event center has two
floors of functional space
with room for about 240
people. A bar and dance

area are located on the first
floor, though a smaller
event could fit entirely in
the dance space, Ramsden
said. The second floor features an open area with an
alter-type structure built
from an old ladder, and an
open dining area that runs
the length of the building.
An old freight elevator is
used to move equipment,
but cant be used for transporting people, Ramsden
said.
Parts of the building had
been previously rented
by different businesses,
including the Stoughton
Center for the Performing
Arts.

A bar and space for dancing is located on the first floor.

In order to get the building ready for weddings and

other events, Ramsden and
some helpers spent the past
winter and spring renovating and redecorating. A lot
of electrical work was done
and a sprinkler system was
installed.

Azura anniversary party

Azura Memory Care celebrated five years in business in Stoughton earlier this month with horse-drawn carriage
rides at their East Main Street facility. A lemonade stand and bake sale helped raise money to fight Alzheimers
disease. Games and activities for families were also on hand.

We took down every

ounce of wall we could
in order to open up the
space, she said.
New bathrooms and a
catering prep area were
added, along with new
lights throughout the building.

The Stoughton Area

Chamber of Commerce is
looking for future Stoughton leaders to take part in a
nine-month-long leadership
class.
The program will concentrate on major issues
impacting our community.
Topics such as our culture;
government; education
system; volunteerism; the
environment; local business; health and human
services; and others will be
addressed in presentations
beginning with an orientation in September and continue until May. The halfday sessions will begin at 8
a.m. and conclude by noon.
Most sessions will include
a tour of sites and locations
pertinent to the topic of the
session.

Pitas: Walked with breast

the neighborhoods through

which the walk path wove.
Harley-mounted crossing guards who Pitas
described a being decorated
throughout in pink, including one man with hair dyed
pink helped walkers at
various crossing and also
offered encouragement.
We would see the same
crossing guard every few
miles so you felt like you
knew them, she said. They
were our guardians.
In addition to a medal at
the end of the race, Pitas also
received accolades from her
state representative. Rep.
Gary Hebl (D Sun Prairie)
closed a recent session of the
Assembly in honor, in part,
of Pitas and her 39-mile
walk. It was, according to
Pitas, a wholly unexpected
recognition.
As she sat in a coffee
house, the fatigue long gone
from her legs, Pitas who is
in her mid-50s reflected
on the possibility of another
walk. She said herself and
friend agreed they would
likely do it again at around
60.
It was very funny
through the walk as youre
tired and its like How
much further is it? she
laughs. But as we got down
to the end, we were like
Yeah, this isnt so bad, we
should do this again.

Holly Pitas and her friend were participants of the AVON 39 walk to
end breast cancer.

On the day of the race,

Pitas and crew began at 6
a.m. The pace was more
difficult, due to the regular
traffic stops that had to be
made and the sheer number
of walkers. It had an effect,
as her normal average of 3.5
miles per hour was closer
to 2 miles per hour, causing
greater pain in her legs.
After mile 18 on day
one I was moving slower
and slower, Pitas said in an
email. My friend, or shall
I say Drill Sergeant Laura,
kept me moving.
In spite of this, Pitas said
she was inspired by the other
walkers, many of whom had
battled, or were currently
battling breast cancer. She
deftly wiped away tears as
she described how inspiring it was to hear survivors
tales.
There were some survivors there that were walking, Pitas said. (It) was
incredible to see people that
were probably still undergoing treatment or just after
treatment and theyre out
there, walking.
Mile markers along the
route provided a further
inspiration to keep moving,
with refreshment provided.
Pitas said they received
encouragement throughout
the walk from residents of

Students have commented that the TAG program

has made a difference in their academic success
and development:
Being a part of math competitions really got me
ready for what we were learning in class. Seeing
those connections helped me understand why we
were learning these skills.
Academic competitions are great because
you learn to work with different kinds of people,
consider other teammates ideas, and stay calm
even when its a competitive situation.
Having a TAG program helped me find
classmates who think like I do.
I love that I get help finding opportunities for
things I can learn, like going to the engineering
expo because I want to be a scientist.
Being challenged in subjects I am good at
actually helped me excel in other subject areas
My independent research project was a really
good learning experience. I learned the I had to
do research so I knew what questions to ask the
professional I met with.

activities, she said.

Singletary said the overall
goal of the program is to recognize student strengths and
meet their needs for additional challenge and growth.
She said its important to get
to know the students well, to
be better able to identify significant strengths in different content areas at different
times.
Our services provide a
way to meet unique needs
within and beyond the classroom, she said. We look
at the whole child to meet
needs that are academic and
social/emotional as well as
the need for enrichment.
The opportunities evolve
as the student matures to
match their developmental
growth.
The TAG program
offers many opportunities
in academic enrichments
and extensions, competitions, out-of-school experiences and access to unique
resources.
Services and opportunities range from those available to all interested students to those designed to
meet a specific need, and
intensive interventions, she
said. For instance, math

and writing competitions

are open to all students, and
independent projects can
match student interests.
Services that target specific needs might also include
curriculum modifications,
blended learning opportunities through online learning
options and self-advocacy
workshops. Intensive supports are provided for the
small number of students
who need something distinctly different than the
general curriculum, such as
subject acceleration or more
personalized programming.
Singletary said gifted education and services should
look different for different
children and at different
times, and must also provide
support and resources for
their classroom teachers and
their families.
By supporting classroom teachers to make sure
access to challenge options
are available in all classrooms, we can make sure
the needs of most students
are being met, she said.
Some students will require
intensive support and program options, and for these
students individualized academic planning is necessary.

Mason-Boersma: Former JFF social worker plans to continue affordable housing mission
Continued from page 1
Services to find someone
who will fill that role and
do similar things that she
accomplished. A new JFF
social worker, Lacey Arimond, has already been
chosen and will likely start
July 27 before the new
office opens in a shared
space with PEP downtown
at 343 E. Main St., a location Mason-Boersma was
a driving force behind
to increase visibility and
accessibility for the people
both nonprofits serve.
Even though MasonBoersma will miss working with those families, she
sees it as an opportunity for
them and her to grow. She
also looks forward to staying connected in the community with many of the
same organizations she was
involved in when she was
employed.
Only now, shell have
some more time to explore
her other interests, such as
traveling, and create more
memories with her husband, Sid Boersma, and
their grown children, Sarah
and Andrew.
Mason-Boersma sat down
with the Courier Hub on
July 2 after returning from a
road trip out west to reflect
on her career as a social
worker and talk about her
future aspirations.

in 1981 I was doing social
work. And so when we
moved to Stoughton after
having our children here,
I took a five-year respite
from social work and actually became a licensed baker. And I sold pies on the
square at the farmers market.
After that five years,
Andrew was going to start
kindergarten and I got a call
from human services asking
me if I would come back
and fill in for somebody for
six weeks, and that was in
1990. And I stayed.

Stoughton has been home

for you for a while now.
What do you enjoy most
about it?
M-B: I like the fact,
especially over the last
few years, that I do see
resources and community
services expanding. And
thats extremely exciting to
see. I think that Stoughton
is becoming more aware of
the expansion of some of
these social issues that are
challenging the people in
need.
The other thing I like
about it is that I like the
downtown and, one reason we moved here, and
not just because we had an
affordable house, but its
independent from Madison,
so you can go to the post
office here, you can shop
here, you always dont have
to go to Madison for stuff,
and thats a good thing.
In the last five or 10
years, what have been the
rising social issues that
youve seen more of?
M-B: Homelessness.
When I first started this job
17 years ago, we were more
focused as JFF workers on
truancy issues.
Now, since 2008 when
the economy took a turn,
were more focused on
basic need issues than ever.
That would be homelessness, trying to get food,
trying to get medical help
to people, more emergency
kinds of things so thats
where the focus has been.
And thats not just Stoughton, thats (everywhere).
What would you say has
been your greatest accomplishment through work,
specifically through JFF?
M-B: Thats a tough
question. Again, building
relationships with families. That voluntary piece
is probably the key for JFF,
building voluntary relationships with families. Thats
really the accomplishment.
Between social worker and
client.
The other accomplishment for JFF too is finding
a new site for JFF. And I
feel really good about that
because people need to
be aware of what JFF is,
and to utilize the new site
downtown is totally important.

position for a month now.
Have you reflected on your
career and what you want
to do in the future?
M-B: I did along the way.
What my goal would be,
besides the traveling and
spending time with family
and gardening and all that
good stuff, is to do volunteer work and to also continue to be on boards and
committees like I was when
I was employed and working full-time.
And also, doing volunteer
work on some projects that
I think are needs in Stoughton and in general in Dane
