The Sterkfontein Composers Meeting,

held annually at the Nirox Foundation, is a
short course for both young professional
and emerging (new) composers to develop
their skills. The unique setting, within the
Cradle of Humankind, provides an intimate
and informal environment in which young
composers can learn and create.
With a faculty of composers and
performers, the daily programme consists
of workshops with the musicians, analysis
classes, individual lessons and group
discussions.
Emerging (new) composers will write a
series of short etudes which will be
workshopped and discussed, and over the
course of the second week a longer piece
for informal performance. Young
professional composers will be invited to
submit short pieces for trombone and
percussion in advance, and these will be
workshopped and developed over the
course of the meeting. A unique feature of
the course is that everyone gets to hear
the progress of their work over the
duration of the course, regardless of their
level. And there is mutual support for
composers from each other as well as
from the faculty.
All the pieces will be performed informally
on the final day of the meeting and
recorded for the composers own use.

On the fourth day of the meeting, Saturday

4 April, there will be a gala concert by the
AxelssonNilssonDuo along with other
events open to the public.
There are 10 places on the course,
roughly 5 for professional and 5 for
emerging (new) composers, including
composers from abroad. Participants stay
at nearby guest accommodation, with
meals taken at the Nirox Foundation.
Some bursaries are available especially
for emerging (new) composers with
financial need. The normal cost of
attending is R5000, which covers
accommodation, meals and tuition but
excludes transport.
