IMPACT OF MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP STYLES ON

DIFFERENT WORK SITUATIONS

Introduction:
The topic of my paper is basically divided by two parts one is Strategic
Management and the other one is Leadership. From the last decade, we have witnessed a
huge revolution on strategic management research and also writing. Most of the strategic
management academics have adopted the logics and languages from economics. Basically,
strategic management is a group of decisions which have been made by some senior
management persons, which determines the action and long run performance of an
organization.
Now what do we understand about the word - leadership? Leader gives lead to the
team of a corporation to be on the right track or to do the right job to achieve a certain goal.
Leaders make the team confident, encourage them, correct them and show the path how to do
the job and what is their ultimate goal. On the other hand, a management personal only
manages people and things to do the job properly.
In this report, I am going to show, how different management styles can be adopted for
different work situations. Rumelt, Richard P., Dan Schendel, and David J. Teece.(1991)

Different management styles:

Managers have to perform many roles in an organization and how they handle various
situations will depend on their style of management. But If I specifically say about managing
power, we all have this. We dont have to be a professional. Because, every day we manage
our work life, family life, relations with other people etc. Depending on person, management
style can be different. It also depends on geographical location, culture etc. Some people
focus on the bigger picture and some do from the smaller one and break their task by some
small parts. So, we can make a category of four different management styles.

PRODUCER STYLE

Whats happening right now

Getting task accomplished
Driving to get things done
Thrive on wining

INNOVATOR STYLE

Make disruptive changes

Creative
Problem solving
Disrupt the status quo

STABILIZER STYLE

Respond well to change

Create order
High quality results
Focus on doing things the right way

UNIFIER STYLE
Respond well to change
Keep coherency
Work well as a unit

DIFFERENT WORK SITUATIONS

Besides of these styles, some people also have mix of those styles. So, basically it
depends entirely on the persons, how they communicate and make decisions, supervise and
motivate. There is a range of management styles and all are a blend of three key behaviours.
Key behaviours of management styles:
Task direction: When a manger tells an employee what, when, where and how to do a
task. These may involve teaching and training as well as directives and instructions.
Decision making: How a manager involves an employee in making a decision.
Relationship building: How the manager forms relationships with employees and
creates a work culture for the team. It includes, coaching, motivating, open
communication and respect. Hunger, J. David, and Thomas L. Wheelen.(2003)

Link between strategic management and leadership functions:

There is a significant difference between strategic management and leadership
function. So, before linking the two of them, we need to know the difference between
management and leadership.

IMPACT OF MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP STYLES ON

DIFFERENT WORK SITUATIONS

So, these are totally two different things. But if a decision maker or senior
management person can play a role as a leader, we can meet the goal very easily. But
definitely it depends on his approach or style to the specific job.
More successful strategies need to be more experimental and creative. For example,
Dell computer system took the strategy to sell their computer directly to the customer. They
are cutting off all the middleman and distributors. Thats the way they thought they can
provide their best computer system to the customers at a cheaper price.

Impact of different management and leadership styles on strategic

decisions:
Basically there is a huge impact of difference management and leadership styles on
strategic decision. Before analysing the impact of different management we need to know
about the basic model of strategic management. It consists of four basic elements. These are:

Environmental scanning
Strategy formulation
Strategy implementation
Evaluation and control

The following factors that are most important to the corporations future are called
strategic factors: strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats (SWOT). Porter,M.E.(1985)
We can consider two different style of strategic management, which is,
Autocratic management style: Where a manger takes all the responsibility and
decisions to make a project and doesnt discuss with his subordinates. He just asks
them what to do and how to do. As a result, the project completely reflects the
personal opinion and personality of the manager.
Permissive management style: Where manger involves all the employees to the
decision making process and consider the whole work as a team work. As a result, the
project reflects the whole teams perspective.

How these style can be adapted to meet challenges:

For example, lets assume group A and group B, two groups are making their
individual sugar cubes tower in 15 minutes. The highest tower builder group wins the game.
Every team has their own manager or team leader. The goal of this game is to find out
different management styles and their impact on each team. In group A, every team member
is building their own tower under the direct supervision of their team leader. For this group,
feeling the current situation is more important than the technical details and the other factors.
The team leader only can see the goal ahead and fully determine to win. The emotional link
with project is very strong. This is commonly called autocratic management. The manager
takes all the decisions and everyone has to obey him- because he knows better. Where group
B, first outlined the plan and the project. The approach to this problem is very different from

the other group. Before starting building anything, the whole team debates on how the tower
should be built. But the managers priority is to finalise the concept and he in charge of the
whole planning. He always wants as less risk as possible. The precise planning enables this
group to achieve the success they want and they cant be distracted easily. This is called
permissive management style. So, here we have seen two different scenarios to manage a
project and their impact on their job.

Conclusion:
The impact of strategic management style and leadership is very important on any
particular project. The success of the project really depends on these factors.
