1. What are some current efforts to address


overweight and obesity?
The Philippine Plan of Action for
Nutrition (PPAN) targets that by 2016 there
shall be no increase in the current
prevalence of overweight and obesity
among children and adults. To stop
overweight
and
obesity,
the
PPAN
recommends the promotion of a healthy
lifestyles anchored on healthy eating,
increased physical activities, no smoking
and drinking of alcohol in the community,
school and workplace. Also, the Department
of Health spearheads the nationwide
healthy lifestyle campaign called Pilipinas
Go 4 Health which aims to inform us in
forming healthy habits and practicing
healthy lifestyle. The National Nutrition
Council also developed the popular version
of the NGF called 10 Kumainments to
promote healthy lifestyle. We have also, the
School-based interventions to prevent
obesity. The Department of Education has
existing guidelines that allow healthy foods
to be sold in school canteens and bans the
sale of soft drinks. Those are some current
efforts to address overweight and obesity.
Let us all support hand-in-hand for all of
those mentioned efforts for our own sake.

2. What are the 4 components of Pilipinas
Go 4 Health?
The four components of Pilipinas Go 4
Health are the following: 1st, GO SMOKEFREE. It promotes to quit smoking and dont
involve ourselves on smoking, make our
place a smoke-free. 2ND GO SUSTANSYA. It
also tells us to eat more vegetables and
fruits that are high in fiber and dont skip
breakfast. 3RD GO SIGLA. It advocates us to
engage ourselves in vigorous exercises and
physical activities such as play and sports
for children and for adults. And lastly, the
4th GO SLOW SA TAGAY. It says that we
should drink responsibly or dont drink at
all. It advocates for the strict enforcement
on the ban on selling alcohol products
especially to minors and near schools.
3. What are the school-based interventions
to prevent obesity?
The Department of Education has
ordered guidelines that allow healthy foods
to be sold in school canteens and bans the
sale of soft drinks. Thus, our school canteen
should observe these guidelines given by
the DepEd. Health, nutrition and physical
education are integrated in the school
curriculum.
Nutritional
assessment
of
children is determined at the start and end
of each school year. Thus, we have our
school clinic and feeding programs.

4. What are ways to celebrate Nutrition


Month?
Nutrition Month celebration should be
able to highlight the importance of proper
nutrition and healthy lifestyle in the
prevention and management of overweight
and obesity. The celebration should not only
be done in July, but it should be done yearround to help decrease prevalence of
overweight and obesity. In our school, the
TLE department spearheads some school
activities to feel the importance of
celebrating the Nutrition Month and to
promote social health awareness thus we
had our parade around the barangay to
make all people aware of the importance of
this Nutrition Month. Our school conducts
activities to promote sustained exercise and
physical
activity
including
backyard
production of vegetables and fruits.
5. What are trace minerals and why are
they important in the diet?
Trace minerals are elements that are
needed in smaller amounts. These include
Copper, Chromium, Fluoride, Iodine, Iron,
Molybdenum, Manganese, Selenium, and
Zinc. Trace Minerals are inorganic matter
that cannot be destroyed by cooking or
heat and are essential to the body for a
variety of processes. Of utmost concern is
iron deficiency in children. Because our
brain is still developing, iron is very
necessary
for
proper
development.
Selenium is a much-forgotten trace mineral
but it is very important in the body. Zinc is
also vital for our skin health. If you are very
low in zinc, you can lose sense of taste and
appetite. Lack of iodine inhibits the
production of thyroid hormones. This causes
a goiter. Mild iodine deficiency has also
been linked to lower IQ scores. They were
all important as well in our diet since they
will also help us to become a healthy
individual.
6. Which is better to drink during exercise,
water or sports beverage?
For me, it is H20 or water is the best
way to go. Our body needs water since our
body cells need and made up of water.
Maintaining water balance is an important
consideration during exercise. The longer
you exercise and the more heavily you
sweat, the greater the need for a water to
help replace these lost water in our cells.
Water is free or cheaper than sports
beverages which are costly. Thus, it can
help us save more money. Water has no
preservatives added thus it is safe and
healthy than those chemical-processed
sports beverages. We need water during
exercise for us not to be dehydrated. Thank
you!
7. What is protein, and why is it important
in healthy diet?

Protein is an important part of life


and nutrition; it is the substance that
composes a large portion of our bodys
structure. Protein is an essential nutrient
found in animal products, nuts, and beans.
Proteins are made up of amino acids
arranged in different combinations. Next to
water, protein is the most abundant
substance in the human body. It is part of all
body cells and is a vital building block in the
growth, maintenance and repair of the body
tissue. Why do we need protein in my diet?
Of the 20 amino acids that make up the
proteins of the body, 9 are known as
essential amino acids. These cannot be
made by the body fast enough to meet its
needs for growth and maintenance, so they
must be obtained through our diet.
Therefore, it is important for us to intake
protein for the repair of our body tissues.

8. Will a diet high in milk and other dietary


products prevent osteoporosis? Why?
Osteoporosis is a silent disease
characterized by loss of bone mass. Due to
weakened
bones,
fractures
become
commonplace, which leads to serious health
risks such as the inability to walk. Yes! Dairy
products are rich in calcium in a form that is
easily digested and absorbed by the body.
Sources include milk, yogurt, and cheese.
Calcium is a key nutrient for our body to
stay strong and healthy. It is also an
essential building block for lifelong bone
health in both men and women. If you dont
get enough calcium in your diet, your body
will take calcium from your bones to ensure
normal cell function, which can lead to
weakened bones or osteoporosis. So, lets
drink milk everyday to fight osteoporosis!
9. What does the term organic in a food
label mean?
The word "organic" refers to the way
farmers grow and process agricultural
products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains,
dairy products, and meat. Organic foods
must be produced without the use of most
conventional
pesticides,
synthetic
fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, or
genetic engineering. These foods are also
produced using methods that promote the
conservation of our natural resources like
soil and water.
10. What is fiber and why is it important in
a healthy diet?
Fiber is an important part of a healthy
diet. Fiber is a substance in plants. It can
help to prevent heart disease, diabetes,
weight gain and some cancers, and can also
improve digestive health. Fiber keeps your
digestive system healthy and regular,
helping you to avoid constipation and the
risk of diverticulitis.

11. How does regular exercise reduce body


fat?
Exercise will burn calories.
Every
3,500 calories is 1 pound of fat.
By
exercising you are increasing your heart
rate, increasing your heart rate will require
your body to work to keep itself cool which
will result in calories burned.
Most
everyone has some excess fat that they can
burn. Exercising correctly by incorporating
strength and cardiovascular training then
you will be successful in burning fat and
losing weight. Be sure to complete more
than just cardiovascular exercise to keep
strong muscles and bones. So lets exercise
regularly and say goodbye to our bad body
fats!
12. What are the benefits you will gain in
joining the search for Mr. Nutrition?
First is boosting my self-confidence.
Joining this search helps me to face my
stage-fright and also building healthy
competition among my co candidates and
trusting myself that I can do this with the
help of my adviser and my classmates. And
of course, be well-informed individual about
the importance of proper nutrition. That
would be all thank you!
13. What are the benefits of taking a bath
everyday?
Do you take a bath everyday? If you
are someone who takes bath everyday then
you are lucky. There are many health
benefits of taking bath regularly. And if you
are someone who bathes only on occasions,
there is some bad news for you. You better
start taking bathing more often if you do
not want to fall sick. Excess body heat is the
cause of many health disorders. It cause
diseases like chicken pox and nose bleeding
in children. Among adults it can cause
indigestion and heat strokes. When you
bathe, you can let out the heat. Taking a
bath everyday will improve our blood
circulation, boosts the immune system,
Improves lung function and of course, youll
look beautiful. So, take a bath everyday
from now on!
14. What is gingivitis? How will you prevent
this kind of deficiency disease?
Gingivitis means inflammation of the
gums (gingiva). It commonly occurs
because
of
films
of
bacteria
that
accumulate
on
the
teeth.
Further
complications, will lead to the loss of teeth.
Healthy habits and good oral hygiene,
including daily brushing and flossing, are
critical in preventing gum disease and
maintaining good oral health. So dont
forget to brush your teeth at least twice a
day, said the doctor!

15. How will you describe a fit and right


individual?
Fit and right individuals have a sound
in mind and body. They think well and look
healthy inside and out. They have a happy
and positive disposition in life. They know
how to handle the stressors of their life and
can find ways to overcome those lifes
challenges without deserting. They find
ways to enjoy exercise, prioritizes their
health and fitness, and they hang around
with other fit people. They are all happy
individuals.

1. What is the most important meal of the


day? Why?
The saying says, Breakfast like a
King, Lunch like a Prince and Dinner like a
Pauper. So, breakfast is the most
important meal of the day. Why important?
DOH said, "Eating breakfast has long term
health benefits. It can reduce obesity, high
blood
pressure,
heart
disease
and
diabetes." It is because breakfast provides
you with the energy and nutrients that lead
to increased concentration in the classroom.
Studies show that breakfast can be
important in maintaining a healthy body
weight. So dont skip your breakfast meal to
function well inside the class.
2. If given the chance to be Miss Nutrition
2015, how will you promote health and
wellness at your own level as a student?

I will be a role model to my fellow


students in our school in buying those
healthy snacks at the school canteen and
choosing the right foods.
I will also
encourage our school principal to promote
exercise every morning in our school to
combat obesity and overweight. I will also
encourage everyone to maintain the
cleanliness of our school to avoid us from all
forms of diseases. Those are little ways but
it will make a difference!
3. What is your concept about the
statement, WATER IS LIFE?
Without water theres no life at all.
Our body cells need water, said the
Biologist. Imagine without water in the
world, and you are very thirsty after that
very tiring work? Of course, you will search
for a glass of water in order to satisfy your
thirstiness. Also according to readers
digest, we can make it 3 weeks without
food, though I promise you that won't be
fun but we can survive only if we have
water, and we cant survive in this world
without water in just 3-5 days-- we will die
eventually! So water is life, and we should
conserve our fresh water wisely!
4. How can you achieve a balance diet?
A balanced diet is one that gives your
body the nutrition it needs to function
properly. In order to get truly balanced
nutrition, you should obtain the majority of
your daily calories from fresh fruits and
vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
The eatwell plate shows that to have a
healthy, balanced diet, people should try to
eat: plenty of fruit and vegetables, plenty of
starchy foods, such as bread, rice, potatoes
and pasta; some meat, fish, eggs, beans
and other non-dairy sources of protein,
some milk and dairy foods, just a small
amount of food and drinks that are high in
fat and/or sugar. Try to choose a variety of
different foods from the four main food
groups.
5. What is the essence of advocating the
DOH nationwide healthy lifestyle campaign
called Pilipinas Go 4 Health?
Philippines youths are resorting to
tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical
inactivity, and alcohol consumption. Those
are the Big Four for Trouble in the
Philippines. Thus, the DOH is advocating the
Pilipinas Go 4 Health which aims to inform
and engage the youth and young adults in
forming healthy habits and
practicing a healthy lifestyle through the
promotion of physical activity, proper
nutrition, and the prevention and cessation
of smoking and alcohol consumption.
Pilipinas Go 4 Health has four (4)
components: 1st GO smoke-free;2nd GO slow
sa tagay; 3rd GO sustansiya; and 4th GO
sigla. The essence of this campaign is to

make social-health awareness among all


Filipinos especially the youths. This
campaign of DOH will serve as an eyeopener for all of us to observe healthy
lifestyle in order to combat overweight and
obesity.
6. In an individual level, how can you
prevent overweight and obesity?
On an individual level, overweight
and obesity can be prevented by achieving
an energy balance between intake and use
of calories. Self-disciplined is important in
taking proper healthy diet and doing regular
exercise will help me to prevent overweight
and obesity. That would be all, thank you!
7. What is your concept about the popular
saying HEALTH IS WEALTH?
Its meaning: We all know the popular
saying Health is Wealth. By health we do
not mean the absence of physical troubles
only. But it is a state of complete physical,
mental and social well-being. The loss of
health is a loss of all happiness. Mahatma
Gandhi also says, It is health which is real
wealth, and not pieces of gold and silver.
Health is more important than wealth. A rich
person can afford various luxuries of life
such as a big car, large house, costly
accessories, air-conditioners, etc. But, he
can enjoy these luxuries only if his health is
good. A healthy person can work with
efficiency to earn wealth. The man who is
not having a good health spends lot of
money on medicines and doctors. He is
never cheerful. That would be all, thank
you!
8. If given the chance to be an ambassador/
ambassadress of good health, how will you
promote the NNC popular version of the
NGF called 10 Kumainments?
I will encourage my fellow students to
internalize and obey all the times the
advices of 10 Kumainments of NNC that
will suit in us, the Kumain ng gulay at
prutas araw-araw, Kumain ng isda, karne at
ibang pagkaing may protina, uminom ng
gatas, tiyakin na malinis ang ating pagkain
at tubig, panatilihin ang tamang timbang at
maging aktibo, iwasan ang alak at huwag
manigarilyo. In our school we should have
always
school
feeding
and
regular
exercises, and of course the cleanliness of
our school is a must!
9. What is the meaning of Pinggang Pinoy?
Cite an example of Pinggang Pinoy Food
Plate?
Pinggang Pinoy, literally translated as
Filipino Plate, is a visual representation of
what a person should consume on a per
meal basis. It is a plate-based food guide
that features the right proportion of food
that contains the right nutrients needed by
the body of an average Filipino. The FNRI

recommends that each healthy meal should


be composed of 33% rice, 33% vegetables,
17% meat, and 17% fruit. We could have a
2-3 cups of rice, eggplant omelet or
malunggay, banana or mango, fried fish or
meat, water or milk. A simple Filipino plate
but healthy and delicious.
10. How will you achieve optimum good
health?
I will observe a proper diet in
accordance with the Pinggang Pinoy Food
Plate, take a bath everyday to avoid
diseases, do regular exercise in order to
burn bad fats in my body and for my
muscles and bones. Also have a good sleep
every day in order to have a sound mind
and body, and of course have a good intake
of water 6-8 glasses a day to eliminate the
bad toxins inside the body. Those are the
things that I must observe a day in order to
achieve the optimum good health. Thank
you!
11. If you suffered night blindness, what
nutrient is deficient in your diet? How will
you prevent the said deficiency?
The term "night blindness" or
nyctalopia implies that you cannot see at
night and you are deficient of Vitamin A.
Eating
vegetables
especially
those
containing vitamin A , and other antioxidant
plant foods can prevent its appearance.
High vitamin A foods include sweet
potatoes, carrots, dark leafy greens, winter
squashes, lettuce, bell peppers, fish, liver,
and tropical fruits.
12. How could exercise contribute to the
total well-being of a person?
Daily exercise will enhance ones
mental well-being and promote healthy
musculoskeletal function throughout life.
Regular
exercise
will
promote
good
appearance or figure. Exercises will burn
and eliminate those bad fats in our body
and we can prevent different diseases. So it
will contribute to the total well-being of a
person. So enjoy taking exercise regularly!
13. How can food industry help prevent and
control of overweight and obesity?
The government through the Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) now requires
mandatory
nutrition
labelling
of
all
processed food products as per DOH
Administrative Order 2014-0030. Each food
product shall bear the Nutrition Facts at the
back panel. Having these nutrition labels, it
provides information for all consumers on
the nutrient content of food products. Thus,
we will be safe of taking those products.
The consumer is an important player in the
solution to obesity because the consumer
can make healthy lifestyle choices at the
individual level. The food industry is
committed to providing the consumer with

healthy food options and reliable nutrition


information. So we can have a good choice
of buying the products in the market! Read
the label first before buying!
14. How can overweight and obesity in
children be prevented?
Informing the parents in choosing the
right foods for their children is a good
prevention to control overweight and
obesity. The right of foods should be given
to their children, delicious and healthy
foods for their baon in school should be
realized. Also, teachers have the power to
inform their pupils about the importance of
eating the right amount of foods to prevent
obesity and overweight. Teacher and
parents should help in guiding the childrens
food intake. Encourage healthy eating
habits. Make favorite dishes healthier.
Remove calorie-rich temptations. Help your
kids understand the benefits of being

physically
active.
Reaching
and
maintaining an appropriate body weight is
important. And of course, the childrens
willingness and discipline to obey all the
advices will make them fit and right
individual. That would be all thank you!
15. How does Go foods function in our
body? Cite examples of major sources of Go
foods.
Glow foods are food that enhances
the quality or the "Glow" of our skin. These
foods are rich in vitamin D that is important
for the development of a healthy skin.
Green-leafy vegetables and fruits are
examples of this food group. They help you
have shiny hair and sparkly eyes. So let us
eat a variety of vegetables. Be beautiful,
eat glow foods and shine!
