Film Trailer Deconstruction Learning To Drive

When viewing film trailers most 21st

century film will start the trailer
with a standard shot showing the
screenshot photo. This shows and
informs the viewers that the
following trailer is approved and
has been approached by a variety
of audience. It is advertised as well
by the motion picture association
The trailer start of with a mid/long shot directly
looking at the 2 lays talking, it is played along with
an upbeat non-diegetic background song along with
and edited in voice over of the woman talking
throughout several quick scenes being played at
the same time. The screenshot shows the woman
on the right as a kind of stressed out character,
shown by the type of body language she is using
but the character on the lefts body characteristics
show that she is forced into hearing the other
womans problem because she doesnt look
interested; Stereotypically you would presume that
the girl on the right dressed in a bright white colour

Throughout the trailer the most common shots

that have been filmed and placed in the trailer are
mid shots which make it easier for the audience to
make judgments in the small scene being played.
From the other pictures above it shows them
meeting each other for the first time but as the
trailer moves on it shows that they are still talking
to each other, creating the type of friendship bond
instead of a romantic one. The shot taken of them
both walking down a pier could indicate that they
are enjoying themselves or even helping one

While the trailer plays on the music doesnt

change which indicates to the audience that
this is not a violent type of film trailer, but
very much so a romantic type genre trailer.
In this picture there is another main
character that has been introduced into the
trailer and in trying to teach her how to drive
he almost forms a positive attitude upon the
middle-aged woman. The man also seems to
be wearing different types of clothing to the
middle-aged woman, which could indicate
that he is a type of religious believer and that
he is not come from America.

Towards the end of the trailer it finally
shows the main characters that act within
this film. While these scenes are played
the up-beat music is still playing but a
narrative voice over introduces the
characters as well. When showing the
characters they have placed their names
next to it as well and they have used a
different but affective font colour/pattern
to make the font stand out. The shots of
the characters itself are mid and close
ups, they have used these shots because
it is shows a perfect picture of what the
character look like. They have done this by
using and appropriate use of lighting for
the male character because it makes him
stand out, this also works for the woman
as even though the background is quite
dim she stands out because they have

Towards the end of the trailer they finally

introduce the title of the film, this is so that in
almost forces the viewer that they have to
watch the whole trailer before they introduce
the title, this is to gain views and popularity of
their trailer. The title sequence is similar in the
way that they introduced the characters, they
have used the same font size and affect and
the same background affect to be consistent
within the trailer and it also makes the trailer
stand out and look good. Following back to
keeping the audience interested they have not
given a release date to when the film is
released and they have left the audience with
