INNOVATION PROJECT INVOLVING THE

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM OF HUMANS.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
The everyday process of teaching and learning involves a majority of teachers who
use manilla card, cardboard, mahjong paper and flash cards as teaching aids. However,
my personal experiences and discussions with my colleaques have made me realize that
the above teaching aids may not have the desired effects on all students. This
observation also includes video slides where students only watch but not able to
appreciate the real experiences.
From my experiences, real experiences should involve all our five senses : seeing,
hearing, touching, tasting and smelling. Multisensary learning is FUN learning and a
means of developing more interest in Science among students.
Self-made teaching aids are student-friendly in terms of safety and are usually
portable, students will enjoy hands on experiences making teaching aids from recycled
materials. These experiences will also help school management to save money.

ADVANTAGES OF INNOVATION PROJECT

This Innovation project of constructing the respiratory system of human beings is
aimed to help improve the level of understanding and knowledge among Year 5 Makmur
students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Dato Harun (1). This increase in
understanding and knowledge covers all relevant skills involved in Science:
* basic skills
* all aspects of development and
* more khowledge regarding the respiratory system of humans.
Education in this new millennium focuses on the approach of Learning through
Reality informally. This means that theteaching and learning process should help

students to learn Science under realistic conditions, safely and stress-free.

Therefore, by allowing students to develop this innovation project of the respiratory
system of humans, there will be more of a positive impact in each of the students
involved. Science teachers should be able to adopt and adapt teaching and learning
strategies to best suit the needs, abilities and social backgrounds of their students.

EXPECTED CHANGES
The first expected change from the use of this innovation project is the improved
level of understanding regarding the human respiratory system among students. The
teaching and learning process will be more interesting and relevant to them when they
have the hands on experiences of constructing this teaching aid. This is cost saving for
the Science Panel (Panitia Sains).
The second expected change is the improved level of Science knowledge which will
help pupils develop Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). Previous methods of
producing teaching aids (charts, mahjong paper) are not effective enough in the 21st
century.
The third expected change is the adaptability of using everyday materials (plastic
bottle, pipes, ballons) to produce a new and useful teaching aid. Students will feel happy
because of the apportunities to producing something new which they can share with
other students.
The fourth expected change is the practical knowledge of the 3Rs: Recyle, Reuse,
Reduce. Science teacher will be able to encourage their students to think more
creatively through Innovation project and inspire them to want to learn more Science

THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE INNOVATION PROJECT: THE RESPIRATORY

SYSTEM OF HUMANS.
The overall implications from this innovation project is positive, especially for the
topic The Respiratory System of Humans.
Among the effects is the increase level of understanding and knowledge in Science.
This innovation project is the starting point to help students have a different mindset
towards how Science is being tought in the classrooms.
Seeeing is believing and through this innovation project, pupils will able to see the
exchange of gases (oxygen. Carbon dioxide.......), They will also be able to see the
functions of the respiratory organs : lungs, diaphragm......
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Student will be able to learn in a more vibrant environment because the innovation
project give enough opportunities for all students to participate actively during Science
lessons. Students who are shy or weak in science will be given the chance to improve
their self-confidence. Good students will help weak students in the spirit of coopereration.
NEW LEARNING EXPERIENCES
The innovation project will encourage students to investigate more about the human
respiratory system. This method will help students understand and remember science
concepts (Inquiry discovery)
STUDENT CONTRED
The preparation of this innovation project encourages student centred learning.
Group interactions with teacher supervision will produce better academic results
compared to teacher centred which is more chalk and talk.

MORAL VIRTUES OF COOPERATION, PEER TEACHNG

While producing this innovation project, group dynamics will encourage good qualities
like co-operation and self discipline among student. Once again, peer teaching with the
aid of this innovation project will help students who are weak in science to improve.
ROLE OF SCIENCE TEACHERS.
Science teachers will have more opportunities to think out of the box during their daily
teaching by using more and more innovation projects. They will be able to show their
professionalism by having various teaching styles to help them educate their students
who come from various socio-economic backgrounds and personal experiences.
In conclusion, the innovation project approach to teaching science and the
understanding of science concepts is much more effective than the traditional approach
of chalk and talk. There will be positive results for both students and teachers.
