NHS Parade, Pep Rally
and Fireworks Show
The Northwest Texans will show
off their spirit on Thursday, Oct.
29, as they honor their athletic
teams and seniors. The celebra-
tion will include a parade and pep
rally and fireworks show at NISD
Stadium. The parade will begin
at 6:30 p.m. and will follow along
Texan Drive from Northwest High
School to NISD Stadium. Texan
Drive will be closed to traffic until
the parade has ended. The com-
munity pep rally will follow in the
stadium, and the fireworks show
will begin at approximately 8 p.m.
Originally scheduled as part of the
school’s Homecoming festivities in
September, the parade, pep rally
and fireworks show was postponed
due to inclement weather.

8.2 percent in September,
meaning 44,700 nonagricul-
tural jobs were lost for the
month. The state’s unem-
ployment rate was 8 percent
at the end of August.

grass burs in an empty area
next to my house. When do I
control them, and what do I
use?
Apply pre-emergent gran-
ules such as Team or Dimen-
sion. Make your first appli-
cation two weeks prior to
the average date of the last
killing freeze in your area.
Repeat with a “booster shot”
application 90 days after the
first. No treatment is effec-
tive in fall.
Dear Neil: Are whiteflies
permanent once they get
started in a garden? They
were horrible on my squash,
tomatoes and hibiscus plants
this season. I used the yellow
traps and insecticides, to no
avail.
Their populations will
rise and fall. However, you’ll
have more of a problem with
them on annuals if you have
shrubs that harbor them
nearby. Privet hedges and
gardenias attract them like
iron filings to a magnet.
Otherwise, some years will
be much worse than others.
Agreed: when you do have
them, they’re terrible.
Dear Neil: What kills wild
violets in the lawn without
killing the grass? And, what
kills weeds in beds, when I
don’t want to kill the desir-
able plants in the beds.
Broadleafed weedkillers
GARDENER’S MAILBAG
(containing 2,4-D) will kill
wild violets. However, don’t
mow for a week or so before
you spray them. Use a pump
sprayer with the nozzle set to
a fairly fine droplet size, and
put one or two drops of liquid
dishwashing detergent into
the spray to help it adhere
to the funnel-shaped leaves.
This spray would be risky
among shrubs and flowers
in your beds. Cultivate once
to remove the weeds there,
then apply 2 inches of bark
mulch or compost across the
surface of the bed. You could
carefully spot-treat weeds
with a glyphosate spray ap-
plied from a trigger-squeeze
bottle, but don’t get it on de-
sirable plants.
Dear Neil: We’ve had doz-
ens of mushrooms. Do they
indicate any kind of problem
with our soil?
Not at all. They’re sap-
rophytic organisms, which
means that their nutrition
comes from decaying organ-
ic matter. They’re harmless
to your lawn and landscape,
and they’ll soon run their
course. You can break them
off if they’re unsightly.
Dear Neil: What planting
and care advice can you give
me for three, 7-foot pond cy-
press trees I bought recently?
I live near a lake.
They’ll benefit from the
proximity to water. Dig their
planting holes large enough
to accommodate their root
balls, but don’t worry about
adding soil amendments as
you plant them. They’re go-
ing to have to adapt to the
native soil anyway, and they
will. Plant them where they
will receive full sunlight,
and space them at least 25
or 30 feet apart. Hand-water
them every few days next
summer, while they’re es-
tablishing new roots.
Dear Neil: Why did my
gerbera daisies not bloom
much this summer and fall?
What did I do, or not do?
Gerberas are frustrating
flowers in most of Texas.
They don’t like our sum-
mer’s heat and low humidi-
ties, and they let us know
by their incessant wilting
and pouting. Think about
how few thriving gerbera
plantings you see. You’re not
alone. Many of the rest of us
have scratched them off our
lists some time ago. Other
flowers will reward you far
better.
Dear Neil: I have two
poinsettias outside in pots.
How do I get them to bloom
at Christmas?
Keep them growing and
vigorous right up until
Christmas. Starting imme-
diately (needed to be start-
ed October 1), give them
14 hours of total darkness
each night and full sun-
light daily. That simulates
the “long nights” they must
have before they’ll convert
over to reproductive (flower-
ing) growth. The red bracts
are actually leaves. All true
poinsettia flowers are yellow
(the little pea-sized struc-
tures in the centers of the
floral bracts).
Dear Neil: Are you aware
of a “false” lantana? This
plant is more woody, and
there is a stalk involved. It
also has strange little seeds
that regular lantana doesn’t
have. Is it of any concern?

most common in Texas land-
scaping, but shrub-form lan-
tanas are native to South-
west Texas, therefore, they

you start by determining
how many hours of direct
sunlight you have. St. Au-
gustine will grow in four

sunlight. With less than
four hours, it will fade away,
in which case you need to
consider mondograss, liri-
ope, Asian jasmine, purple
wintercreeper euonymus
or other shade-tolerant
groundcover.
