Aeroelasticity
NX Nastran Module
Aeroelasticity
The simulation of structural models in the presence of an air stream
Calculates the loads and damping from an aerodynamic model and
applies them to a structural model
Add-on module for NX Nastran and Femap with NX Nastran
Aeroelasticity is a consideration in many designs
Aerospace: airplanes, helicopters, missiles
Transport: motor racing, high-speed trains
Civil engineering: suspension bridges, tall buildings,
chimneys and power lines
Page 14
NX Nastran Aeroelasticity
Analysis Types
Static aeroelasticity structural
stresses from aerodynamic loading
and control surfaces (SOL144)
Enter basic flight characteristics, angle
of attack, turn rate, pitch rate, etc.
NX Nastran calculates and applies
approximate aerodynamic loads to the
structural model
Dynamic aeroelasticity flutter analysis (SOL145)
Potentially unstable and destructive vibration
Aerodynamic forces interact with natural frequencies to produce rapid
periodic motion

Element Enhancements
Plane stress / strain elements
Previously plane stress and strain were
modeled using options to standard shell
elements
Enhancements:
New plane stress CPLSTS and plane
strain CPLSTN elements can now be
used in all linear structural solutions
require PPLANE physical property
2D edge traction load PLOADE1 for plane
stress and strain
Benefit:
Simpler creation of 2D solid models
Page 35

Element Enhancements
Nonlinear Material for Nastran solutions 106 and 129
Previously solid elements in nonlinear static and transient had limited
support for material nonlinearity
Enhancement:
Parabolic HEXA, and PENTA elements support elastic-plastic
materials
Benefit:
Removes restrictions to solid models in SOLs 106 and 129

Element Enhancements
Total strain output in nonlinear static and transient
Previously strain output for SOL 106 (nonlinear static) and SOL 129
(nonlinear transient) only reported mechanical strain
Enhancement:
Strain values are now the total strains
Total strain = mechanical strain + thermal strain
Can be turned off with SYSTEM(500)=1
Benefit
Clarifies strain results for nonlinear solutions and becomes consistent
with other solutions
Page 37

Support contact for automatic inertia relief solutions
Automated static condensation (PARAM, CNTASET)
Large Model performance improvements
Benefit
Contact can now be used for loads on free-free structures
Glue Connection
Enhancements:
Glue traction output (BGRESULTS)
Improved accuracy for connected surfaces with very small separation
Performance improved for models with a very large number of
