2.2. Association of Several Factors with CAM Use.

Several studies investigated the association of different factors with CAM use.
2.2.1. Age
A 2012 Philippine study on CAM use among Filipinos, it has been found out that age is
not a significant factor (p > 0.1). (Dahilig Salenga)
A study in 2002 on CAM use among Canadian and US respondents, age is found out to
be a significant factor. Among Canadians, age groups 20-44 (OR=1.43, 95%CI: 1.34,
1.53) and 45-64 (OR= 1.42. 95%CI: 1.35, 1.50) are more likely to use CAM than the age
group 15-19. Age group 65 and above (OR= 0.68, 95%CI: 0.63, 0.74) is less likely to use
CAM. Among US respondents, age groups 20-44 (OR=1.77, 95%CI: 1.17, 2.66) and 4564 (OR= 2.04. 95%CI: 1.34, 3.11) are more likely to use CAM than the age group 15-19.
Age group 65 and above (OR= 1.29, 99%CI: 0.80 2.08) is not associated. (Mcfarland)
A 2007 study in US and Columbia on CAM use among residents, age groups 18-44
(OR= 1.73, 99%CI: 1.47-2.04) and 45-64 (OR=1.64. 99%CI 1.41-1.90) are more likely to
use CAM compared to age group 65 and above)(Nahin etal).

2.2.2. Sex
A 2012 Philippine study on CAM use among Filipinos, it has been found out that age is
not a significant factor (OR=1.2, 95%CI: 0.6-2.4). (Dahilig Salenga)
In 2002 study on CAM use among Canadian and US respondents, males are less likely to
use CAM (Canada: OR= 0.79. 95%CI 0.77, 0.82; United States: OR= 0.72, 95%CI: 0.62,
0.84) (Mcfarland).
A 2007 study in US and Columbia on CAM use among residents, females (OR=1.55.
99%CI: 1.42-1.70) are more likely to use CAM compared to males (Nahin etal)

2.2.3. Civil status


There are no related studies found for the association of civil status with CAM use.
2.2.4. Highest Educational Attainment
A 2012 Philippine study on CAM use among Filipinos, it has been found out
that

educational attainment is not a significant factor (p > 0.41). (Dahilig

Salenga)
In 2002 study on CAM use among Canadian and US respondents, individuals with
educational attainment of high school or higher are more likely to use CAM (Canada:
OR= 1.40. 95%CI 1.35, 1.46; United States: OR= 1.78, 95%CI: 1.30 2.44) (Mcfarland).
A 2007 study in US and Columbia on CAM use among residents, individuals with
educational attainment of high school (OR=1.37. 99%CI: 1.19-1.57), college degree
(OR= 1.85, 99%CI: 1.62-2.12), bachelors degree (OR=2.40, 99%CI: 2.05-2.81) and
Masters/Doctorate/Professional degree (OR= 2.79, 99%CI: 2.27-3.42) are more likely to
use CAM compared to those with less than high school attainment (Nahin etal).

2.2.5. Household Income


A 2012 Philippine study on CAM use among Filipinos, it has been found out that annual
income is not a significant factor (p > 0.875). (Dahilig Salenga)

2.2.6. EmploymentStatus
A 2012 Philippine study on CAM use among Filipinos, it has been found out that
employment status is not a significant factor (p > 0.984). (Dahilig Salenga)
A 2007 study in US and Columbia on CAM use among residents, employment to

private sectors (OR= 1.07, 99%CI: 0.97-1.19) and employment to government


sectors (OR= 1.12, 99%CI: 0.95-1.32) are found to be not associated with CAM use.
On the other hand, individuals who are are self-employed or have family business
(OR= 1.41; 99%CI: 1.19-1.66) are more likely to use CAM compared to not
employed individuals (Nahin)
