Hark that ye be not deceived. Kiskil Lila*1 is not the Lamma, the hateful Lillomma, Keskildimmen
most foul. They indeed commit similar vileness but Lamma is to Lila as the anzu to the owl.*2
Lo! Lamma is fiercer than Lila but restricted to few regions whilst Lila existeth in many legions.
Lamma hideth in cavernous dark spaces while Lila abideth in ruins and desolate places .

There, in the wastes and the ruins, dwelleth Kiskil Lila among owls, jackals and other
unclean creatures. There at night she shrieketh in her bitterness, she waileth with the
desert winds. In olden days was she indeed a spirit of the air but the weight of her
depravity hath consigned her to the night forever. Verily did she surf on the winds in the
sun but for her manifold iniquities she hath now only the moon and the sandstorm.

Yet do her perverse yearnings drive her to homesteads, indeed to the outskirts of towns.
For lewd is her hunger and savage her malice.
Lusteth she not after men? She entereth their dreams to lie with them for in dreams she
may still fleetingly assume her former beauteous shape. Like a leech she milketh their seed
in the vain hope of offspring which is forbidden her. When such is nevertheless born, she
hath no milk to feed them, nor do they grow. They merely exist for a while, whimpering,
before they perish. Such is an abomination to heaven.
2

And in her bitter vexation and spite, she harmeth the pregnant woman, indeed also injureth
she the mother and the infant. Verily the little one that dieth in the crib, the losing of the
unborn by the pregnant, that is the wickedness of Kiskil Lila. And the toddler would she
harm, by luring it to the snake pit. She hath not the power to steal them like the abducting
wraiths, therefore would she destroy them.
She bringeth from her deserted dwelling the seeds of disease. These she streweth in and
around the house, in the foul hope that further harm would come to the household and the
neighbours. And the man with whom she lay, indeed will he suffer a sickness of soul or
body. And when her injurious magic faileth to harm mother or child, she fervently hopeth
that the seeds would bear the fruit of disease.

Give heed to mine admonitions and carve mine advice on the tablet of thine heart. This is
the way to banish the Kiskil Lila and undo her evil work, even after the mother and child
have fallen ill or the seduced man suffereth nightmarish visions.
3

Let all the adults in the household, those who are not already too weak, gather to utter the
banishment. If all the inhabitants are afflicted, then send for thine neighbours or a onga
priest if such is available. These are the words ye repeat with raised voices seven times in
unison:
Kiskillillake lake, iskillillake barra!
Tsi anna kompa! Tsi kiya kompa!
Lilith, evil one, Lilith leave!
By heaven, get out! By earth, get out!

This willst thou do in order to safeguard thine household, thine beasts, thine shope, thine
poultry, the animals of thine house and thine crops against the Kiskil Lila in order to keep
her away.
Thou mayest fashion the clay tablet thyself or if thou canst not write, pay a scribe or a
priest to make it. On the tablet, let the names Ninenui, Ninsenenui and Tsamtsamgula be
inscribed. They guard against Kiskil Lila. When baked and hardened, bury thou the tablet
near thine house.
1 Kiskil Lila means Spirit Maiden. The Akkadian translation is Lilitu or Ardat Lili. The Lamia is another entity.
2 The Anzu bird or Imdugud is a massive bird which breathes fire, also seen as a lion-headed eagle.
