Flynt, free speech activist and publisher of Hustler
— a hardcore pornographic magazine — was witty and
opinionated when he spoke Thursday night to a packed

Randall Kenan looks back at the African American


superheroes in the comic books of his youth. He
will focus on the way he viewed their presentation
of race and masculinity and their impact on his
own writing.
Kenan is associate professor of English at UNC and the
author of works of fiction and nonfiction. His most recent
book is The Fire This Time (2007), a nonfiction look at race in
contemporary America. He has received a Guggenheim
Fellowship, a Whiting Writers Award, the Sherwood
Anderson Award, and the John Dos Passos Award. Kenan
was the 1997 Rome Prize winner from the American
Academy of Arts and Letters. He was awarded the North
Carolina Award for Literature in 2005.
