Chapter 1 Review Sheet

*It will be necessary for you to be able to read a table as well as two passages about an
experiment. You will need to identify the parts of the scientific method and the independent,
dependent, and control and experimental groups.
1. Define biology. Give at least 4 examples of likely topics in a biology course.
Biology: the study of life (what was once living and those alive today)
1. The way living things interact with each other and their environment.
2. The digestive system of an earthworm.
3. Chemicals that cause plant stems to lengthen or flowers to bloom.
4. Why the Texas horned lizard squirts blood out of its eyes.
2. What is the difference between a hypothesis and a theory?
When one person thinks of an idea, it is a hypothesis. When the entire scientific community
agrees on an idea, it is a theory.
3. Can an observation be the collected data? Why?
Yes, because some biologists observe behaviors and that is the only data one can collect.
Observations are qualitative data.
4. What are the levels of organization? Write them.
Cells Tissues Organs Organ Systems Organism
5. What are the 8 characteristics of life?
1. Made of one or more cells
2. Displays organization
Reproduces
5. Requires energy 6. Maintains homeostasis
time 8.Responds to stimuli

3. Grows & develops 4.

7. Adaptations evolve over

6. Give 2 examples each of qualitative and quantitative data.

Qualitative: Observations, Color
Quantitative: Measure plant height, Time it takes for cheese to curdle
7. Name the steps of the scientific method.
Observe, Form a hypothesis, Conduct experiment, Collect & Analyze data, Conclude
8. What is an independent variable? What is a dependent variable?
Independent variable is the thing you manipulate (or change) in an experiment. The
dependent is the data you collect as a result of that change.
9. Why is it necessary to have a control and experimental group when doing an experiment?
What is the purpose of the control?
A control is necessary to have something to compare to.
10. What is peer review and why is it important?
Peer review is when another scientist reviews your work for accuracy. It is important
because it allows others in the field to assess a scientists investigations and results.
11. Give 2 examples of adaptations.

1. Tiger stripes that camouflage the animal in dry grass and shadows
2. Camels hump that stores extra water in the desert.
12. What characteristic of life is demonstrated by the fact that you get tired and cranky when you
havent eaten? Requires energy
13. A dog panting in hot weather trying to lower its body temperature is an example of
homeostasis.
14. What characteristic of life is demonstrated by a venus flytrap closing on a fly? Responds to
stimuli
