Khan, who completed 62 years of ghazal
singing in 2015, is set to
share his big, splendid
flight in Delhi on Friday at
a ghazal concert Hoook's Ghazal Journey.
The 74-year-old tells
HT that he is very excited
to perform in Delhi, as
Delhiites hold a special
place in his heart. "Dilli ki

Surprising the maestro
rarely listens to his own
ghazals. "I never listen to
my own ghazals. If at all I
have heard my own
works, it has always been
at someone else's place.
I end up finding faults in
my works. I might as well
listen to other works
rather than mine."

CONSISTED OF A SMALLISH GROUP OF (MALE) PATRONS, CONNOISSEURS, MASTERPOETS
( USTADS ), AND APPRENTICES. MOST MUSHAIRAHS WERE BASED ON A WELLKNOWN PAT
TERN LINE ANNOUNCED IN ADVANCE, SO THAT EVERYBODY S GHAZALS COMPOSED IN THIS
PATTERN WERE FORMALLY IDENTICAL (SHARING METER, RHYME, AND REFRAIN).

he word ghazal
means something
like conversations
with women; like the genre
itself, it originated in sixthcentury Arabic verse. Early
Arabic ghazal revolved
around two broad themes:
the rakish celebration of
wine, women, and song;
and the elegiac lament over
lost love. By the time the
ghazal passed into Persian
from the early eleventh century onward, this second
theme had come to have
mystical overtones: separation and suffering were at
the heart of love, while the
faithful, longing lover was
even a kind of martyr. (For
discussion, see the latter
part of Convention in the
Classical Urdu Ghazal
[site].) The overarching centuries-long
history
of
Persian ghazal is described
in detail in E. G. Brownes
four-volume A Literary
History of Persia (1906;
[site]). Through Persian, the
medieval ghazal also came
to develop major traditions
in Turkish and Urdu. Early
Urdu, cultivated in the
Deccan during the Mughal
period, included a substantial body of ghazal poetry
(on Dakani or 'early Urdu'
literature: [site]). The northward migration of Urdu

poetry at the beginning of
the 1700's was a complex
and contested process (see
Chapter Six in Early Urdu
Literary Culture and History
[site]). The rest of this discussion will focus on the
'classical' (i.e., 18th/19thcentury) North Indian Urdu
ghazal; the two greatest
poets of this tradition were
Mir Muhammad Taqi 'Mir'
(1722-1810) and Mirza
Asadullah Khan 'Ghalib'
(1797-1869).
Formally speaking, a
ghazal is a set of two-line
verses (they arent technically couplets, since in
most of them the two lines
dont rhyme). Ideally there
are to be an odd number of
them, and ideally the number is to be something like
seven or nine. They share a
strictly-defined
Arabicderived quantitative meter;
for a pragmatic account see

Urdu Meter [site], and for
more details of Arabic metrical theory see Pybus 1924
[site]. At the end of each
verse they also share a
common rhyme syllable,
and after it usually a common repeated refrain word
(or words) as well. Beyond
this, the verses of a ghazal
share only the larger ghazal
universe of stylized characters, scenes, actions, and
images. A ghazal, in short,
is a series of semantically
independent two-line minipoems that have a strong
formal unity but usually
no particular unity beyond
that, though sometimes
small groups of verses can
be marked as a connected
'verse-set'. (On the quest
for unity, see Orient Pearls
Unstrung [site].) Thus in
performance, oral reciters
and singers freely reorder

the verses of a ghazal, and


almost always omit some of
them.
The first verse of a ghazal commonly incorporates
the rhyme and refrain at the
end of both lines,rather than
only at the end of the second line. If it does this, its
called an opening-verse.
Under oral performance
conditions, this feature
enables the listeners to perceive the formal structure of
the ghazal more quickly.
The last verse commonly
includes the poets chosen
pen-name; if it does this, its
called a closing-verse.
Both these features reflect
the ghazals expectation of
oral performance. The traditional venue for oral performance
was
the
mushairah, which consisted
of a smallish group of
(male) patrons, connoisseurs,
master-poets
(Ustads), and apprentices.
Most mushairahs were
based on a well-known pattern line announced in
advance, so that everybodys ghazals composed
in this pattern were formally
identical (sharing meter,
rhyme, and refrain). This
formal identity made them
extremely comparable, so
that individual achievement
stood out strikingly.

The discovery of illegal weapons in Fiji


A MAJOR investigation
was carried out by police in
1988, leading to the recovery of illegal weapons from
different places in the
Western Division. The
investigation was the result
of information received from
police in Australia where a
container of weapons destined for Fiji had been intercepted. It was one year after
the country's first military
coup in 1987 which deposed
the Dr Timoci Bavadra led
Fiji Labour Party and
National Federation Party
coalition
government.
Australian police told their
Fijian counterparts that a
similar
container
of
weapons could have arrived
in the country a few months
earlier. The suspected
sender of the arms was
reportedly in the country at
that time but he is believed
to have fled when the
weapons were discovered in
Fiji. For the past three
weeks, The Fiji Times
brought to you some exclusive interviews with former
police officers involved in
recovering the arms and
also gave a flashback into
the case. Today, we bring
you another exclusive interview with a former politician
in the deposed Bavadra
Government who had an
"innocent" meeting with the
suspected arms sender in
England.
HE was a Cabinet
Minister in the Dr Timoci
Bavadra led coalition government when armed soldiers
stormed
into
Parliament on May 14,
1987. The democratically
elected Fiji Labour Party
and National Federation

Party coalition government


was overthrown by the then
Brigadier General Sitiveni
Rabuka.
Considering that it was
the first time for Fiji to experience a coup, the country
was in a chaotic situation
and a mass migration of
skilled people was also
recorded in the aftermath.
Although the military coup
had deposed the democratically elected government,
the deposed government
members did whatever they
could to resist the illegal
regime at that time. In June
1987, some members of the
deposed government went
to England to meet the
Queen's private secretary
and brief him on the situation. Dr Tupeni Baba, who
was the Education Minister
in the deposed government
and the spokesman, also
went on the trip to England.
With him were Dr
Bavadra, the deposed
Attorney-General Jai Ram
Reddy, government member Joeli Kalou and the
deposed government's legal
adviser Bhupendra Patel. In
an exclusive interview with
The Fiji Times, Dr Baba
revealed how he "innocently" met with someone in
June 1987 who became the
main suspect in the shipment of arms to Fiji in 1988.
According to media
reports in June 1988, Fijiborn Mohammed Rafiq
Khan, who also used names
like Peter Khan, Dr Ralph
Khan, Mohammed Rafiq
Kahan and sometimes
Mohammed Rafiq was the
suspected sender of the
arms and ammunition, and
other things.

Dr Baba said after the


May 1987 coup, the
deposed
government's
resistance
group,
"Movement for Democracy"
was very active in different
parts of the world. He said
when they went to England,
Dr Bavadra and Mr Reddy
were unable to have an
audience with the Queen
but they were allowed to see
her private secretary.
"I was in the hotel lobby
in London with Joeli Kalou
one evening meeting former
Fiji residents living there as
Dr Bavadra and Mr Reddy
had other commitments," he
said. "A number of Fijians
had raised money for us as
they were part of the
Movement for Democracy,
so they came to meet us.
"While we were meeting
Fijians living in London,
Khan walked up to me as he
probably knew that I was the
government spokesman too
then. "He just came up to
me and said we should get
some arms. And he then
asked me if we wanted

Fiji extends flag consultation,

iji has extended the
consultation period for
the country's new flag
until the end of year. The
Prime
Minister
Frank
Bainimarama announced
plans for a new flag earlier
this year, saying he wanted it
hoisted on the 45th anniversary of independence in
October. In a statement he
has announced the consultations will now be extended
until the last day of the year
and the new flag design will
be considered by Parliament
when it convenes next year.
Mr Bainimarama says more
choices for the flag will also

be offered over the next few


months. A flag design competition resulted in 23
designs offered to the public
for feedback. He says there's
been much positive feedback
on the new designs but the
government recognises people want more time and more
designs to consider. There
have been calls for a referendum on the issue and widespread criticism the process
of changing the flag has
been undemocratic. The
extension follows a weekend
poll which found 53 percent
of people want the current
flag retained.

he Fiji Women's
Crisis Centre says
the message that
village bylaws should
not violate women's
human rights is falling
on deaf ears in some villages. The Centre's coordinator, Shamima Ali,
says there have been
reports of village bylaws
restricting what women
wear, dictating their hairstyles, and public whippings for drinking kava
too late at night. She
says the iTaukei Ministry
released a statement
last week saying bylaws
will be reviewed, but
keeping in mind that
individual human rights
are not violated.
"Apparently, these things
are falling on deaf ears
the further you go away,
from the urban centres,
from the towns - the
more ingrained these
kind of rules and regulations policing women's
behaviour and dress
seem to be happening."

"He said he's from Fiji
and that he was operating
from Canada at that time. I
didn't know him and it was
just an innocent meeting."
Dr Baba said when Khan
left the hotel, he told his colleagues about what he had
said but none of them took
the matter seriously. He said
from the way Khan asked
him, it was obvious that he
was involved in the arms
trade. He said it was the first
and last time that he had
seen Khan. After visiting
England, he went to India
with Dr Bavadra and spent
some time there as the
guest
of
the
Indian
Government.
Dr Baba said when he
contested the 1987 general
election, he had to resign
from his teaching position at
the University of the South
Pacific. He was appointed

again by the university in


early 1988 but he continued
to speak for the deposed
Bavadra government. "It
was sometime in June 1988
when I was walking out of
the university gate when a
reporter stopped me and
asked if I knew about the
discovery of arms in Fiji," he
said.
"I remember telling the
reporter that it was an
attempt by certain people to
blame us (deposed government) for bringing the illegal
arms into the country. "We
had nothing to do with that
but it was probably the
result of differences within
that group as it was obvious
that someone wanted to
remain in harness." Dr Baba
said when Khan's name
popped up in the media
after a few days as the main
suspect behind the shipment, he realised meeting
him in London. "I had forgotten about meeting Khan in
England in June 1987 but
when I heard about the
arms shipment one year
later, it came to my mind so
we followed it with a lot of
interest.
"It was obvious that
some
people
wanted
Rabuka out of the illegal
government and luckily the
arms were found." Dr Baba
said he was also taken in for
questioning by police with
other members of the
deposed coalition government after the discovery of
the weapons but later
released. He said the idea
of using arms to fight for
something was out of his
thinking, saying Khan probably thought there would be
a lot of takers when he

approached him in London.


While he may not have seen
the illegal weapons that
were sent to Fiji, Dr Baba
believes some of the
weapons were in Parliament
after the civilian coup by
George Speight in 2000.
"I was in the Australian
civilian military and I was a
weapons specialist and
technician. I was in the
Sydney University regiment
while doing my studies," he
said. Dr Baba said after
studying about the Vietnam
war, he had ruled out the
thought that war was the
answer
to
problems.
Ponipate Lesavua, a retired
police officer who co-ordinated the recovery of the
illegal arms, was a member
of the deposed government
in 2000 and held hostage
with his colleagues. "When I
was held hostage in 2000, I
saw the shotguns and AK47
guns being carried around
by
the
Counter
Revolutionary
Warfare
(CRW) unit soldiers and
rebels in Parliament," he
said. "I also saw seven
bazooka or rocket propelled
grenade launchers when I
was with George Speight in
his office in Parliament. "I
told my colleagues who
were also held hostage that
some of the weapons carried by the rebels in
Parliament were similar to
those that we had recovered
from various places in
1988." Mr Lesavua said
while the team of police and
military personnel were able
to recover most of the illegal
weapons in 1988, about
three tonnes could not be
found. He said the missing
weapons were a worry.

FIJI AND THE SW PACIFIC

I
f you haven't
already
heard, a
macking swell
(aka the #IndianOceanXXLSwell) rocked
everywhere from
West Oz to Indo to
the Maldives last
week.

Marching
eastward
under Oz, this swell has
recently plowed through
Tasmania and into New
Zealand, where it is currently making its way
through the Tasman Sea
and stepping into the
Southwest
Pacific.
Although the swell has
now lost a little gusto, you
can expect various locations from Fiji to Tahiti to
even the Americas to soon
feel the wrath.
STORM STATUS
It's been a week since
the storm was in its prime,
where it stretched across
the entire South Indian
Ocean as one large and
intense area of low pressure. Over the past few
days, this storm has broken up into a complex system with multiple areas of
smaller lows now making

its way under New


Zealand. However, one of
these associated lows is
still packing a punch,
boasting a decent-size
swath of satellite-confirmed wind speeds reaching 40-60kts in the
Southern Ocean and
tracking eastward.

WHERE THE SWELL


IS HITTING NOW
Tasmania and New
Zealand. Although this
s p e c i f i c
#IndianOceanXXLSwell
has recently passed the
peak for Tasmania, other
large swells are stacking
up on the horizon.
Meanwhile, New Zealand
is peaking right now with
about 16-18ft+ of deepwater swell for the wellexposed locations of the
island nation.
WHERE THE SWELL
IS HITTING NEXT
Following the great circle path and radiating out
through angular spreading, this swell has its sights
set on the many islands
that dot both the Tasman
Sea and the Southwest
Pacific, including the popular destinations of Fiji and
Tahiti.

swells are lining up for Fiji.
We're looking for another
good-size SW swell to
build in Friday the 3rd into
Saturday the 4th, with
another by Monday the
6th, then possibly even
more for around the 8th10th. It's still pending
development, so stay
tuned to the forecast.

its way over to Tahiti as

Smith has been acting as

General Manager Corporate
while Karen Lobendhan is

International. Meanwhile,
the former Head of

IJI Television Ltd has


been given an extension of 12 years to its
broadcasting licence where
it will have to pay $20,000
when the licence comes into
effect on Wednesday, July
1. The licence extension
announcement was made
yesterday by Minister for
Communications
Aiyaz
Sayed-Khaiyum a few days
short of the expiration of the
current licence on June 30.
While handing over the
licence to Nouzab Fareed,
CEO of Fijian Holding Ltd
CEO, of which Fiji TV is a
subsidiary company Mr
Saiyed-Khaiyum said the
licence was given for Fiji
TV's spectrum allocation in
news. "We have now
extended licence to a period
of 12 years. As you know
Government has been carrying out a number of substantive works in regards to
spectrum allocation in Fiji
which has led to a number of
changes,"
Mr
SayedKhaiyum said.
Fiji Television Ltd is
expected to switch from
analogue to digital with at
least the Suva-Nausori corridor to be finalised at the end
of this year.
"Certain conditions with

this, as soon as the switch


over, this licence will then be
varied to reflect the digital
spectrum." Other conditions
in the licence include the
emphasis on local content.
"When specific hours of
local content has been given
, people have tried to fulfil
that by showing local sports,
local content is not just
about local sports. For now
the 25 hours of local content, at least the 13 hours of
that should not be local
sports, it should be other
content, whether in the vernacular or English, it should
be local and that means
local production."
He said this would
encourage the development
of local production in Fiji.
Meanwhile, Mr Fareed said
the 12-year licence was
unexpected but added they
would
definitely
work
according to the conditions
and the switch from analog
to digital would allow members of the public to watch
high quality and high definition TV shows.
When its 12-year licence
expired in 2012, Fiji
Television Ltd was given sixmonth extensions up until
yesterday when a new 12year licence was given.

to Tahiti, this run of SW
energy will move in as two
overlapping swells: 1)

Primarily the newly developing swell from the storm


as it slides out from under
New Zealand; 2) Some
underlying
super-longperiod energy from the
original Indian Ocean
swell. The longer-period
forerunners from this run
of SW swell will gradually
fill in over July 6th-9th, topping out the 9th-11th and
delivering fun-size to locally solid surf to the better
exposures from Central
America to Mexico; and
showing similar size but
just a touch sooner for
South America.
For California, this swell
will be a little smaller for a
couple reasons: 1) It's further away/north, and 2)
Shadowing by French
Polynesia. However, funsize surf is certainly

expected to still show at

J&K Police turn to court for help

eeking to block Facebook pages
that upload photographs of militants, the J&K Police have
sought directions from a local court to
social networking sites.
The action comes after a photograph of Hizbul Mujahideen militants
was uploaded on a Facebook page.
The photograph, apparently taken
after a convention, shows the militants
in camouflage outfits posing with their
automatic rifles. The militants belong
to different parts of south Kashmir.
Security agencies are concerned
about how the militants were able to
meet at one place. All these militants
were already on our radar, said a senior police officer dealing with counter
insurgency. But the matter of concern
is how the militants from different parts
of south Kashmir managed to assemble at one place despite heightened
pressure from the security forces.
The rare photograph, police sources
said, indicates that militants from different parts of Tral, Pulwama and
Shopian assembled at one place for a
meeting. What is disturbing about this
meeting is why the militants took such
a risk just for a meeting, said the
police officer. Also, it shows that the
militants in south Kashmir are in close
contact with each other and have good
mobility too. Though militants, in army
fatigues, roam around in south
Kashmirs Tral area, their movement is
limited in Pulwama and Shopian dis-

the picture. They include Hizbul
Mujahideen commander Burhan
Muzaffar Wani, the 21-year-old militant
from Tral who is seen as the poster
boy of the new breed of militancy in
Kashmir. There are four militants from
Shopian, three from Pulwama, two
from Tral and one from Awantipora in
the picture. Police sources say that
one militant who is masked in the picture has not been identified. The picture has also confirmed polices apprehensions that Special Police Officer
Naseer Ahmad Pandit, who decamped
with a rifle from Minister Altaf Bukharis
residence, has joined the Hizbul
Mujahideen. Police sources said

police station. He was reportedly beaten up at the police station, and later
joined militancy. The photograph,

militants, has gone viral on social networking sites in the Valley. In recent

militants are deliberately circulating
these pictures, said a police officer. It
is likely that they are doing it to inspire
more youth to join militancy. In the
past, the police have managed to track
down the people running pro-militant
and pro-separatist pages. But with the
youth using proxy sites, they are finding their task more difficult.

Joint team to
probe Iranian
boat's presence
in Kerala coast
HIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A
Joint Investigation team by
central and state agencies will
commence a probe from
Tuesday on the seizure of a
suspicious foreign dhow with
12 Iranian crew members intercepted off the Kerala coast.
The team, comprising personnel from Coast Guard, Navy,
Kerala Police and those from
central agencies, will be headed by Thiruvananthapuram city
police commissioner H R
Venkatesh, sources told PTI.
The Coast Guard had yesterday intercepted the foreign
dhow and had brought it to the
nearby Vizhinjam coast.
The sources said that the
statements given by some of
the crew members of the boat,
which had left Kalat in Iran on
May
25,
were
not
matching.Though the crew
stated that the boat was 'drifting', they were not able to tell
why they had not called for
help. A Pakistan ID card and a
satellite communication set
had also been recovered from
the vessel by the officials.
Coast Guard said the boat has
been handed over to police.
Venkatesh said that with the
probe being intensified, more
details are expected in the
coming days.

Monitoring Greek crisis


May hit India indirectly
New Delhi: The government on
Monday said it was closely monitoring
the Greek situation and euro market
movement after the rejection of creditors' austerity proposals in a referendum posed the possibility of Greece's
exit from the euro zone. "We will have
to see how the euro moves now. We
are closely monitoring the Greek situation. There could be some reaction on
the Fed (US Federal Reserve) rate
hike," Finance Secretary Rajiv
Mehrishi said here. "The Greece crisis
might impact India indirectly," he said.
Over 61 percent of Greeks voted "no"
on Sunday, responding overwhelmingly to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' calls
to reject a proposal by the country's
creditors for more austerity in
exchange for a financial bailout.
Mehrishi said last week that the
fallout from Greece would not have a
direct impact on India but capital flows
would be a potential concern, even as
the government was in touch with the
Reserve Bank of India to deal with any
untoward situation. "If yields on euro
bonds go up, it might impact inflows
and outflows from India," he said.
Indian industry feels that if a crisis
developed for Europe due to Greece,
India too could feel the tremors like the
rest of the world. "What is worrying is
that the overall situation with regard to
India's merchandise exports does not
look promising this year and the troubles in Europe could only deteriorate

the prospects," Associated Chambers


of Commerce and Industry of India
(Assocham) said in a statement here.
"There is a need for RBI and the
finance ministry to keep a close eye on
the muddy global situation and its possible effect on India's capital flows and
the currency movement," the industry
body added. India's merchandise
exports continued to decline for the
second month this fiscal, down by over
20 percent at $22.35 billion in May from
$27.99 billion in the same month of the
previous year, official data showed last
month. The Federation of Indian Export
Organisations (FIEO) has warned that

result in layoffs, besides putting pressure on the current account deficit
(CAD). FIEO president S C Ralhan
agreed with RBI Governor Raghuram
Rajan's recent remarks that the central

strategies, leading to the Great

statement, he said that based on the

July 10 to put into orbit five British

Research Organisation (ISRO), its
Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle
(PSLV) is scheduled to carry aloft
five foreign satellites on July 10.
The four-stage engine PSLV
rocket in XL variant is expected to
blast off around 10 pm from the
Satish Dhawan Space Centre at
Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The
62.5-hour countdown will start on
July 8 around 7.30 am.

Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) rallies and last years sit in
claims he is owed Rs80
million by the party.
According to DJ Butt
the PTI racked up a bill of
Rs140 million during the
Islamabad sit in of which
he had been paid Rs59
million. DJ Butt claims he
had a daily agreement
which started off at
Rs680,000 with the PTI
during the Islamabad sit-in.

to cover costs of arrangements and was reduced.

financial difficulties due to

Ali will be indicted in the currency smuggling case on

PM may raise Modis remarks, Indian interference at UN


ISLAMABAD: The Prime
Minister Office is considering
taking up the recent controversial statement of Prime
Minister Narendra Modi about
the creation of Bangladesh
and the ongoing Indian interference in Pakistan at the
United Nations.
A close aide to Prime
Minister Nawaz Sharif told
Dawn that the issue was discussed at the Foreign Office
last week in the presence of
the countrys representative to
the UN, Dr Maleeha Lodhi,
and most of the participants of
the meeting were of the view
that Pakistan must take it to
the UN.
But considering Mr Sharifs
desire to develop friendly ties
with India, it will be interesting
to see his reaction to the suggestions of the Foreign Office.
The prime minister went to
Delhi in May last year on Mr
Modis invitation to attend his
oath-taking ceremony, but
since then relations between
the two countries had only
soured.
According to sources privy
to the development, a consensus had emerged during the
meetings at the Foreign Office

that the Indian prime ministers

Thousands of names to be struck off ECL


ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister
Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has said
that thousands of names will be
removed from the exit control list
(ECL) if the departments concerned
fail to provide within a month justifications for keeping them on it.
During a meeting held here on
Monday to review the new ECL
framework, he said governments in
the past used the ECL as a tool to
punish or favour people, adding
that several names had been on
the list for decades.
He said the procedure for inclusion of names in the ECL would be
simplified and justice would be
ensured in the process. He directed
the ministry to finalise its recommendations on the new ECL framework after consultations with other
ministries and departments concerned. No name should be put on
the list without justification, he said,
adding that it was not appropriate to
keep somebodys name on the ECL

arrangements at Liaqat
Bagh where former chairperson of Pakistan Peoples
Party (PPP) had delivered

city police officer Syed Saud
Aziz and other high ups
were not on duty when the

attackers targeted Benazir.


However, Imtiaz told the
ATC on Monday that foolproof security cover was
provided to Ms Bhutto outside Liaquat Bagh on
December 27, 2007 the day
she was killed in a gun-andbomb attack afte a public
meeting. He said that all the
police officers including the
then CPO Aziz were also
present on the scene to provide security to Benazir
Bhutto.
He added, Had Benazir
not appeared from sunroof
of the vehicle, she might not
have been killed, he said.

Thadani says that it
wasnt a conscious decision for the artists to work
with recycled material.
Having said that, it is a
common practice in western contemporary art to
use found-and-recycled
objects,
he
says.
Interestingly, none of the
artists have actually witnessed an Indian monsoon, so they had to read
up or rely on their imagination. Kaabi-Linke, who is
exhibiting her painting
Spick & Span in June
(made using graphite on
silk paper on canvas) drew
from her memories of rain
in Tunisia: I imagined
heavy rains with a strong
socio-psychological
impact, something I know
from Tunisia. In the end of
the summer, the rain falls
on the dry ground, and creates myriads of water
streams.
The changing climate
affects the behaviour of
people, she explains.

say to be true. Arjuna also
says that the personality of
the Lord is very difficult to
understand and that He
cannot be known even by
the great demigods. This
means that the Lord cannot
even be known by personalities greater than human
beings. So how can a
human being understand
Lord Sri Krishna without
becoming His devotee?
Therefore Bhagavadgita should be taken up in a
spirit of devotion. One
should not think that he is
equal to Krishna, nor
should he think that
Krishna is an ordinary personality or even a very
great personality. Lord Sri
Krishna is the Supreme
Personality of Godhead. So
according to the statements of Bhagavad-gita or
the statements of Arjuna,
the person who is trying to
understand the Bhagavadgita, we should at least theoretically
accept
Sri
Krishna as the Supreme
Personality of Godhead,
and with that submissive
spirit we can understand
the Bhagavad-gita. Unless
one reads the Bhagavadgita in a submissive spirit, it
is very difficult to understand

Bhagavad-gita? The purpose of Bhagavad-gita is to
deliver mankind from the
nescience of material existence. Every man is in difficulty in so many ways, as
Arjuna also was in difficulty
in having to fight the Battle
of Kurukshetra. Arjuna surrendered unto Sri Krishna,
and consequently this
Bhagavad-gita was spoken. Not only Arjuna, but
every one of us is full of
anxieties because of this
material existence. Our
very existence is in the
atmosphere of nonexistence. Actually we are not
meant to be threatened by
nonexistence. Our exis-

tence is eternal. But somehow or other we are put into


asat. Asat refers to that
which does not exist.
Out of so many human
beings who are suffering,
there are a few who are
actually inquiring about
their position, as to what
they are, why they are put
into this awkward position
and so on. Unless one is
awakened to this position
of questioning his suffering,
unless he realizes that he

those who begin to question why they are suffering
or where they came from
and where they shall go
after death are proper stu-

For instance, a child may
think that an automobile is
quite wonderful to be able
to run without a horse or
other animal pulling it, but a
sane man knows the nature

man, a driver. Similarly, the
Supreme Lord is the driver
under whose direction
everything is working. Now
the jivas, or the living entities, have been accepted
by the Lord, as we will note
in the later chapters, as His
parts and parcels.
A particle of gold is also
gold, a drop of water from
the ocean is also salty, and
similarly we the living entities, being part and parcel
of the supreme controller,
ishvara, or Bhagavan, Lord
Sri Krishna, have all the
qualities of the Supreme
Lord in minute quantity
because we are minute ishvaras, subordinate ishvaras. We are trying to control nature, as presently we
are trying to control space
or planets, and this tendency to control is there
because it is in Krishna. But
although we have a tendency to lord it over material nature, we should know
that we are not the
supreme controller. This is
explained in Bhagavadgita.
What is material nature?

Lord, who is the predominator. The living entities
and material nature are
both predominated, controlled by the Supreme
Lord. According to the Gita,
the living entities, although
parts and parcels of the
Supreme Lord, are to be
considered prakriti. This is
clearly mentioned in the
Seventh
Chapter
of
Bhagavad-gita. Apareyam
itas tv anyam prakritim viddhi me param/ jiva-bhutam:
This material nature is My
inferior prakriti, but beyond
this is another prakriti
jiva-bhutam, the living entity. Material nature itself is
constituted by three qualities: the mode of goodness,
the mode of passion and
the mode of ignorance.

Bonya identifies blogger Avijits killers


Investigators
say
seven
Ansarullah men were involved in
the murder Seven members of
Ansarullah Bangla Team were
involved in the murder of Avijit
Roy, investigators said, adding
that two of them had been positively identified by the bloggers

Indo-Bangla joint survey launched in 162 enclaves


A joint survey has begun in
Bangladesh and India to record
the choice of nationality of
51,584 people in 162 enclaves in
each other's territories ahead of
enclave exchange on July 31
next. According to the Land
Boundary Agreement signed
recently between the two countries, 75 joint teams have been
formed to conduct the survey.
Among the teams, 50 will
work in Bangladesh and 25 in
Cooch Behar district of India,

includes a joint census, enlistment of land category, taking
photograph and filling up of

Gay marriage declared legal across the US in historic supreme court ruling

marriages
are now legal across the
entirety of the United
States after a historic
supreme court ruling that
declared attempts by conservative states to ban
them unconstitutional.
In what may prove the
most important civil rights
case in a generation, five of
the nine court justices
determined that the right to
marriage equality was
enshrined under the equal
protection clause of the
14th amendment.
Victory in the case
known as Obergefell v
Hodges, after an Ohio man
who sued the state to get
his name listed on his late
husbands death certificate
capped years of campaigning by LGBT rights
activists,
high-powered
attorneys and couples waiting decades for the justices
to rule. It immediately led to
scenes of jubilation from

coast to coast, as campaigners, politicians and


everyday people gay,
straight and in-between
hailed a victory of love.
The ruling, in which
Justice Anthony Kennedy
cast the deciding vote,
means the number of
states where gay marriage
is legal will rise albeit after
some stalling from 37 to
50. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law,
Kennedy wrote in his opinion for the majority. The
Constitution grants them
that right.

years, after an autopsy showed a

Health in Clallam County,
Washington. "The woman had several other health conditions and
was on medications that contributed to a suppressed immune
system," it added. Her name and
age were not made public.

Afghanistan Said to Overturn Death Sentences in Womans Lynching


KABUL, Afghanistan An
Afghan court has overturned the
death sentences of four men convicted in the lynching of a woman
who had been falsely accused of
burning the Quran, a lawyer connected to the case and a politician
said on Thursday. In a nation in
which violence against women is
commonplace and so-called honor
killings often go unpunished, the
death in March of the woman,
named Farkhunda, managed to
galvanize Afghanistan as no other
case had. Videos of her final
moments, taken by members of the
mob that surrounded her, showed
Farkhunda pleading as she was
kicked and stomped, and was later
tied to the back of a car and
dragged to the garbage-strewn
banks of the Kabul River. There her
attackers set fire to her body.The
violence unfolded at one of Kabuls
most historic shrines, where
Farkhunda, a student of Islamic
law, had come to preach against
what she saw as the ignorant,
superstitious and un-Islamic practices that prevailed there, like the
sale of good luck amulets and the
veneration of the tomb of an early
Muslim conqueror of Afghanistan.
One of the shrines keepers,
apparently threatened by her
preaching and torrent of criticism,
began to shout that she was an infi-

del who had burned the Quran.


Summoned by the shouts, young
men nearby descended on the
shrine, ready to lynch her.
In the immediate aftermath of
the killing, it was easy to find
Afghan men who supported the
actions of the mob, saying that the
woman deserved to die if the accusation were true and that even if
she were innocent, her tormentors
had killed her in good faith.
But Farkhunda was soon transformed from a pariah into a martyr
as it emerged that she had been a
pious student who had been trying
to rid shrines of superstition.
Officials at the Ministry of
Religious Affairs declared her innocent and pledged an ambitious
campaign to carry on her effort to
rid shrines of fortune tellers. At her
funeral, women, not men, carried
her coffin to her grave. And young
men staged a re-enactment of her
murder, in a searing political
demonstration intended to pressure
the government to prosecute her
actual killers.
Initially, at least, the case
unfolded with an unusual degree of
transparency. The courtroom proceedings were at first televised, a
rarity for a court system built with
Western support that has earned a
reputation for being corrupt and
opaque. In May, the court issued

death sentences for four men: the


shrinekeeper who appeared to
have sealed Farkhundas fate with
his accusation and three other men
in the mob believed to have been

timing is unclear an appellate
court overturned those death sentences in a proceeding that
Farkhundas advocates have
described as secret and possibly
the result of political meddling.

the explosion once again raised questions about the dangers of having foreign forces vehicles on the streets of
