PATTERN WERE FORMALLY IDENTICAL (SHARING METER, RHYME, AND REFRAIN).
he word ghazal
means something
like conversations
with women; like the genre
itself, it originated in sixthcentury Arabic verse. Early
Arabic ghazal revolved
around two broad themes:
the rakish celebration of
wine, women, and song;
and the elegiac lament over
lost love. By the time the
ghazal passed into Persian
from the early eleventh century onward, this second
theme had come to have
mystical overtones: separation and suffering were at
the heart of love, while the
faithful, longing lover was
even a kind of martyr. (For
discussion, see the latter
part of Convention in the
Classical Urdu Ghazal
[site].) The overarching centuries-long
history
of
Persian ghazal is described
in detail in E. G. Brownes
four-volume A Literary
History of Persia (1906;
[site]). Through Persian, the
medieval ghazal also came
to develop major traditions
in Turkish and Urdu. Early
Urdu, cultivated in the
Deccan during the Mughal
period, included a substantial body of ghazal poetry
(on Dakani or 'early Urdu'
literature: [site]). The northward migration of Urdu
The
Ghazal
poetry at the beginning of
the 1700's was a complex
and contested process (see
Chapter Six in Early Urdu
Literary Culture and History
[site]). The rest of this discussion will focus on the
'classical' (i.e., 18th/19thcentury) North Indian Urdu
ghazal; the two greatest
poets of this tradition were
Mir Muhammad Taqi 'Mir'
(1722-1810) and Mirza
Asadullah Khan 'Ghalib'
(1797-1869).
Formally speaking, a
ghazal is a set of two-line
verses (they arent technically couplets, since in
most of them the two lines
dont rhyme). Ideally there
are to be an odd number of
them, and ideally the number is to be something like
seven or nine. They share a
strictly-defined
Arabicderived quantitative meter;
for a pragmatic account see
A Practical Handbook of
Urdu Meter [site], and for
more details of Arabic metrical theory see Pybus 1924
[site]. At the end of each
verse they also share a
common rhyme syllable,
and after it usually a common repeated refrain word
(or words) as well. Beyond
this, the verses of a ghazal
share only the larger ghazal
universe of stylized characters, scenes, actions, and
images. A ghazal, in short,
is a series of semantically
independent two-line minipoems that have a strong
formal unity but usually
no particular unity beyond
that, though sometimes
small groups of verses can
be marked as a connected
'verse-set'. (On the quest
for unity, see Orient Pearls
Unstrung [site].) Thus in
performance, oral reciters

AS EVIDENCE CONFIRMING HIS SUPREME POSITION. IN BHAGAVAD- GITA, CHAPTER 10, VERSE 20, THE SUPREME LORD REVEALS THAT HE MANIFESTS AS THE

manifestation there is a
controller. Nothing could be
manifested without being
controlled. It is childish not
to consider the controller.
For instance, a child may
think that an automobile is
quite wonderful to be able
to run without a horse or
other animal pulling it, but a
sane man knows the nature
of the automobiles engineering arrangement. He
always knows that behind
the machinery there is a
man, a driver. Similarly, the
Supreme Lord is the driver
under whose direction
everything is working. Now
the jivas, or the living entities, have been accepted
by the Lord, as we will note
in the later chapters, as His
parts and parcels.
A particle of gold is also
gold, a drop of water from
the ocean is also salty, and
similarly we the living entities, being part and parcel
of the supreme controller,
ishvara, or Bhagavan, Lord
Sri Krishna, have all the
qualities of the Supreme
Lord in minute quantity
because we are minute ishvaras, subordinate ishvaras. We are trying to control nature, as presently we
are trying to control space
or planets, and this tendency to control is there
because it is in Krishna. But
although we have a tendency to lord it over material nature, we should know
that we are not the
supreme controller. This is
explained in Bhagavadgita.
What is material nature?
and there are jivas, the living entities which are controlled. If a living entity says
that he is not controlled but
that he is free, then he is
insane. The living being is
controlled in every respect,
at least in his conditioned
life. So in the Bhagavadgita the subject matter
deals with the ishvara, the
supreme controller, and the
jivas, the controlled living
entities. Prakriti (material
nature) and time (the duration of existence of the

Gay marriage declared legal across the US in historic supreme court ruling
With 5-4 ruling in
Obergefell v Hodges, justices determine right to
marriage equality is protected under constitution in
decision hailed as victory

Same-sex
marriages
are now legal across the
entirety of the United
States after a historic
supreme court ruling that
declared attempts by conservative states to ban
them unconstitutional.
In what may prove the
most important civil rights
case in a generation, five of
the nine court justices
determined that the right to
marriage equality was
enshrined under the equal
protection clause of the
14th amendment.
Victory in the case
known as Obergefell v
Hodges, after an Ohio man

his name listed on his late
husbands death certificate
capped years of campaigning by LGBT rights
activists,
high-powered
attorneys and couples waiting decades for the justices
to rule. It immediately led to

contender
Hillary Clinton said
on Friday she hoped 18
months of nuclear talks
between Iran and major
powers would yield a deal
in the next week.
The groundwork for the
talks was laid when Clinton
was US Secretary of State
and she had not commented recently on the negotiations as she seeks the
Democratic Party nomination to run in the November
2016 presidential election.
"I so hope that we are
able to get a deal in the
next week that puts a lid on
Iran's nuclear weapons
program," Clinton told a
rally on the Dartmouth
College
campus
in
Hanover, New Hampshire.
She said that even if a deal
were reached, there would
be more work to be done.

US announces
first death from
measles in 12 years
LOS ANGELES: Health authorities
on Thursday announced the first
US death from measles in 12
years, after an autopsy showed a
woman's fatal pneumonia was
caused by the contagious disease.
"The cause of death was pneumonia due to measles," said a statement from the Department of
Health in Clallam County,
Washington. "The woman had several other health conditions and
was on medications that contributed to a suppressed immune
system," it added. Her name and
age were not made public.
The Republican-led US
Congress will review any
final deal, with congressionally mandated sanctions remaining in place if
the House and Senate disapprove. Clinton said in
early April before announcing her candidacy that "getting the rest of the way to a
final deal by June won't be
easy, but it is absolutely
crucial." She has also said
in the past that no deal
would be better than a bad
one. A good deal would be
one that "verifiably cuts off
all of Iran's paths to a
nuclear weapon" and
"imposes an intrusive
inspection program with no
sites off limits," Clinton has
said. A major sticking point
has been access to inspect
Iranian sites for compliance. Western and Iranian
negotiators said Friday
there were signs a compromise is beginning to
emerge on the issue.

The arc of history is quite
clear that the struggle for

states and the District of

books though New
Hampshire, New York and
Wisconsin do not extend

Meanwhile,
twenty-eight states, including Alabama, don't offer
statewide civil-rights protections against discrimination whatsoever.
Judd Proctor, a 65-yearold resident of Silver

never thought he would live
to see the day that gay
marriage would be a constitutional right. When I first

would be marriage. We had

he told the Guardian outside the court.

our efforts to keep your family members may not be yielding best results,
as the month opens. Try your best to
keep everyone happy, but beyond a point,
even you shall be helpless. Accept that,
and things shall seem way better. On your
own, understand that the pleasure of your
company cannot be substituted by any luxuries for your loved ones. Take time out,
somehow, to spend with your family, even if
that implies keeping your career at the
back-seat for a few days. If you are married, conflicts over why you fail to devote
time and effort in marriage may become a
major cause of contention at this time. Take
care! Speak to your bosses at work, if need
be, but ensure, everything's sorted and
your personal life remains balanced. On a
happy note, you shall be confident and
radiant this month, coursing your way to
progress and financial stability. Steer clear
of impetuousness, though, especially

Expect a boost in your returns, if you are

short trip meant to seize a deal. You may
also plan to initiate a renovation project at
home. Mercury's influence will make you
work over time, though, specifically if you
have foreign assignments on your platter.
Career professionals, otherwise, may
rather have a stable time, as the month
begins. Later in the month, though, you
may feel a bit confused or lost, given the
debilitated Mars' and unsteady Moon

The inconsistent attitude of peers and
subordinates will dishearten you. Many of
you may even wish to change an existing

enjoying your work! Just ensure checking
all quarters, advises Ganesha.

Key Taliban

Afghanistan
KABUL: A key Taliban commander in Afghanistan, Hajji
Wazir, was killed in a raid
on Saturday, police said.
"Hajji Wazir, the commander
of Taliban militants in west
Afghanistan, was chalking
out a terrorist plan in a
house when the security
forces, acting upon intelligence report, raided the
house on Saturday morning
and killed him," Xinhua
quoted provincial police
chief Abdul Majid Rozi as
saying. Wazir commanded
some 500 militants and his
killing could be a major setback to the Taliban outfit in
Herat and adjoining
provinces, Rozi added.
Taliban militants have been
fighting the government to
regain power in
Afghanistan's eastern
Wardak province and killed
at least 30 Afghan police
personnel in clashes that
broke out between them and
security forces on Friday.
