Youth hone basketball skills at Sixers Camp

Cherry Hills Katz JCC plays host to camp for 8- to 13-year-olds from June 29 through July 3
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Riley Janora, 12, of Mt. Laurel
is an avid basketball player.
He plays Amateur Athletic
Union basketball and is excited to
hit the court at the high school
level in a few years.
When asked what has helped
him improve his game the most,
however, Janora doesnt talk
about his league team, but instead participating at the
Philadelphia 76ers Basketball
Day Camp.
Its great because you can try
stuff you cant always try for like
the school team or the district
team because its just for fun, he
said.
The Katz JCC in Cherry Hill
hosted the 76ers camp last week.
The camp is a weeklong instructional series where players ages 8
to 13 honed their skills through
drills, workouts and games.
Alfred Johnson, the director of
the camp and head coach for
Manor Colleges mens basketball
team, said the JCC is an excellent
place for the camp because of its
location in the heart of South Jersey and the large number of
courts available.
We have kids coming from all
over South Jersey, Johnson said.

Campers participating in the

Day Camp at Katz JCC in Cherry
Hill last week face off in a game
of 3-on-3. The campers spent a
week at JCC perfecting their
basketball skills with drills, practice sessions and games.
players from as far as Ocean
County to neighboring communities Cherry Hill and Mt. Laurel.
The range of experience is
wide as well. Johnson said some

of the campers are beginners

who havent picked up a basketball prior to camp, while others
are experienced players hoping to
improve their skills heading into

high school.
Regardless of the experience
level, the goal is the same for each
camper: exit camp on Friday a
better basketball player than you

were on Monday.
This camp is built upon teaching and built upon instruction,
Johnson said. Its not just games
all days. Its fundamentals and
teaching kids to play the right
way.
Janora was attending camp for
the fifth time last week. He said
the experience has made him a
much better player on and off the
court.
Its such a great opportunity
and its a lot of fun, he said.
Janora was a repeat camper
along with 11-year-old ZyAire
Tart. The two recall meeting at
camp a few years ago and they
have been friends ever since.
I was excited, Tart said about
coming to camp for the first time
four years ago. I knew I was
going to make friends.
Nicole
Paulhus,
11,
of
Barnegat, got to experience that
same excitement when she
walked into her first Sixers camp
last Monday. Paulhus has played
basketball her entire life, but this
was her first time attending a basketball camp.
Its given me a chance, Paulhus said. Its giving me opportunities and made me feel more confident with the boys.

Cherry Hill becomes part of history thanks to photographer
Carol Highsmith and 21st Century America collection
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Photographer and author
Carol M. Highsmith has seen
hundreds of cities and towns
across all 50 states.
Yet she feels Cherry Hill is one
of the most unique and thriving
she has been to.
Highsmith has made it her life
mission to photograph as much of
America as she can for a collection named 21st Century America. She has visited all 50 states
and has a photo collection of
more than 15 million pictures.
She is donating her copyrightfree collection to the Library of
Congress to preserve for generations.
Highsmith first visited Cherry

Hill a few months ago and returned to take more photographs

last Monday. What she discovered
was a town she described as thriving and unique.
Communities like (Cherry
Hill) are fascinating, because its
us, its what we look like, she
said. You have historic properties, you have the Cherry Hill
Mall.
The Cherry Hill Mall was one
of Highsmiths favorite stops on
her trip. She said the mall shows
many signs of life at a time when
malls across America are going
out of business.
I went to Cherry Hill Mall and
I was blown away by it, she said.
Its not just a box. The side that I
saw had all sorts of interesting facades and architectural details.

Highsmith says the mall is just

an example of the liveliness of
Cherry Hill. She talks of having
been to cities and towns of all
sizes during her years journeying
across America. While she has
seen a lot of beautiful towns over
the years, shes seen a lot of rundown and dilapidated towns as
well.
Other towns that size have
fallen by the wayside, she said.
Cherry Hill has done so well. I
burst with pride when I go into a
city thats well run.
Highsmith also enjoyed the
Cherry Hill Public Library and
the numerous historical properties in town such as Barclay
Farmstead and Croft Farm. She

A president from New Jersey?

Chris Christie is officially a candidate, and he could be a good one

hat was possibly the worstkept secret in New Jersey

politics was finally revealed
last week: Gov. Christie will officially
be running for president of the United
States in 2016.
Christie threw his hat into the ring
last week, and now hell have to contend with the apparent 1 million other
people running for the Republican
nomination notable among them
Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, Rick Perry,
Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and
Scott Walker.
Christies prospects of winning the
Republican nomination are considerably lower than they were back in 2012,
when he decided to not run for the ticket that was heads-up with Barack
Obamas re-election campaign. However, despite this and whether you
think hed make a good president
Christie will probably make a strong
candidate.
In 2009, Christie won the gubernatorial election over incumbent Jon

Corzine. He collected 48.5 percent of

the vote that year, the largest margin
for a first-term Republican in New Jersey since 1969.
Four years later, he overwhelmingly
won re-election over Barbara Buono
and other challengers with 60 percent
of the vote.
Today, after a few scandals, his approval rating has dipped significantly,
and other strong Republican rivals
have entered the race as well.
But that doesnt mean he cant turn
things around, and make Republican
voters forget or overlook his deficiencies.
Christie has always thrived during
campaigns, and he has always done
well with all voters, regardless of polit-

ical party affiliation. That has long

been his attraction as a potential Republican candidate for presidency. In
his nomination speech, he already
blasted both parties, saying Republicans and Democrats alike have failed
our country.
Could that be enough by itself to
make Republican voters throw their
support behind him, instead of Bush
and the others?
Could he overcome recent negative
press received with the pension fight
and the bridge scandal by focusing on
his accomplishments and plans for our
country?
Maybe. It wouldnt be the first time it
happened.
The next few months of electioneering should prove interesting before the
first primaries are held in February.
Next year will be the 100th anniversary of Woodrow Wilson winning reelection as president. He was the last
candidate from New Jersey to win.
Could Christie be the next?

I hope you never find

yourself in an emergency situation that has
your reaching out to 911,
but if you do there will
soon be a new way to get
help on the way in Camden County. The Freeholder Board has
invested in a next generation 911 system
with all new hardware and servers that will
offer the ability to accept 911 calls by text.
We are all getting more used to texting
one another, and I feel that is it important
for the county to utilize the most current
technology to insure the safety of our residents. Even though you will be able to text
to 911, please remember that it is still most
beneficial to call 911 so that our trained call
takers can obtain important information
quickly. But in certain emergency circumstances, this will be a new and valuable alternative to using the phone.
This will be an effective tool for residents
who may have difficulty making a traditional phone call. Residents who are hearing impaired will have the option to text 911
and receive follow up texts from the County
Communications Center. It can also be useful if you have texting capabilities but not
phone reception. The system will also be
able to accept photos by text of emergency
situations or crimes in progress that will be
useful to first responders and law enforcement officers.
Our 911 system has the capability to give
call takers the exact address where a 911 call
originated. This feature can pin point the
location of land lines and Phase II compli-

ant phones with G.P.S. capabilities or Smart

Phones, and will give location information for all
devises.
The 911 systems mapping system provides
emergency help to individuals regardless of if
they are aware of their current location or
not. This becomes important in situations
such as motor vehicle accidents on highways when help is sent according to the
closest onramp for the quickest response.
This is a continuation of Camden
Countys upgrade to our public safety radio
communications infrastructure. The
County now broadcasts on a 700 MHz radio
system that enables our first responders to
provide critical emergency services in a
more effective, efficient and more importantly, safer manner. This system also allows police, fire and EMS to seamlessly
communicate with one another.
It is our priority to keep our systems current and provide our first responders the
tools they need in an emergency situation.
The safety of our residents comes first and
we want to give them an upgraded system
that provides peace of mind for years to
come.
For more information, please visit
www.camdencounty.com. If you have any
other questions about Camden County services, please call me at (856) 225-5466, or email
me at mgentek@camdencounty.com. Also,

HIGHSMITH
Continued from page 2

feels these locations help paint a

picture of what Cherry Hill was
many years ago and where it has
gone today.
(Cherry Hill) cares enough
about (its) historic properties,
she said. And youre not developing them. Thats huge.
A historic property was what
originally inspired Highsmith to
go on her journey across America. In the 1980s, she was assigned
to take photos in Washington,
D.C., as part of a night class.
Highsmith chose to photograph
the Willard Hotel, an abandoned
building near the White House.
She took pictures of the crumbling building and wondered if
the history of the building would
have been lost if she had never
photographed it.
A short time later, Highsmith
learned about Frances Benjamin
Johnston, a photographer who
captured many images of America in the late 19th and early 20th
centuries. Johnston had photographed the hotel when it had
been thriving many decades ago.
When I went in, it was absolutely destroyed, Highsmith
said. When she photographed it,
it was elegant.
Johnston inspired Highsmith
to travel the country and document the history of the presentday United States in photographs.
She officially began her journey
in 2010.
The key is to document the
American states and capture all
of them and do a very thorough
study, she said.
Highsmiths Cherry Hill photos could soon be seen in many
places in and out of the town. All
of her photos are copyright-free
and will be sent to the Library of
Congress later this year. In addition, Highsmith plans to send the
photos to the township for inclusion on its website.
