School Roll 2010
As always some families leave at the end of each year.
The great news is that we have taken enrolments for the beginning of next year.
Our roll is not expected to alter.
Thank you to those parents who asked about the roll this week as we were able to provide
the facts rather than having people rely on gossip.

Board Planning

As part of the Boards planning a questionnaire was sent home seeking views on the
Boards key strategies. The Board appreciates the replies received and the Board
considered them all. Included here is a summary of some of the initiatives we will
undertake

As you will be aware Schools are required to implement the National Standards and
new curriculum next year. In addition Taonui staff will be involved two initiatives to
improve student learning: numeracy and library development.

Excellence in teaching  Numeracy development project

 Implementing the National Standards

School Curriculum  Implementing the new curriculum. In the first 2

weeks of term 1 students will have a say in planning
topics & parent views sought.
 In establishing the needs of our students their own
views will be considered along with parents. Teachers
use assessment data to establish individual student
needs.
 Teaching programme to involve more activities within
our own community.

Maintain a quality staff  All staff undergo appraisal and the Principal’s will be
completed by an independent consultant employed by
the Board.
 Relievers – we use the same relievers available to all
schools and they are in high demand. We usually take
whom we can get if it is short notice and there is a
limited choice when booking in advance. All schools are
in the same position.

Develop a culture that  A lot of work will continue to implement STRIVE into
embraces our School our curriculum. Those are the values our community
values wanted.
 One aspect of Maori culture will be introduced each
term.

Quality learning  Continue to apply for grants for resources

environment  Library upgrade
 Board will organise a working bee for the first
weekend of each term.

Parent communications  Term teaching plans will continue to be published

 Board will have a small segment at each assembly to
provide regular updates.
 Assemblies – we will only have 2/3 per term because
they take a lot of class time to prepare/practice for
and students need to be confident about participating
and presenting. Assemblies may be less frequent when
students are practicing for events such as Wearable
Arts. They will usually be on a Friday.
 Staff will explore ways of making the wiki/blogs easier
to maintain and for parents to use regularly.
 Beginning an email tree system in 2010

Environmental practices  The Board will provide the resources to develop

recycling in the School.
 Adopt the litter less lunch box or take all litter home
idea.

Opportunity for  The Board will be asking parents for more details here
involvement so in the meantime think of all the ways you would like
this to happen. How could you make it happen?

From the last BOT meeting

It was great to see 4 parents at the meeting supporting our School. We are very
fortunate that we have a good Board and they have identified the need for further
training and this is been provided by the Ministry of Education early in 2010. Been a
School Trustee is not an easy task and now days involves having sufficient
understanding of the curriculum, national standards etc. to make decisions that
improve the learning of all students at our School. It is a big responsibility and to be
successful needs community support. Everyone is welcome to come along to all
meetings
