AMP-95

DISPERSANT FOR KAOLIN CLAY, TITANIUM DIOXIDE, OR CALCIUM CARBONATE

AMP-95 (2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol containing

5% water) is an excellent dispersant for clay,
titanium dioxide, and calcium carbonate pigment
(or for combinations thereof) used for coating
the surface of paper and paperboard. Through
the use of AMP-95, these pigments can be
efficiently dispersed to produce low-viscosity,
stable aqueous slurries which are ideal for
application to paper products. See ANGUS

AMP with regard to coated paper which will
contact food.

Optimum AMP Levels

The level of AMP-95 required in aqueous dispersions, and
the need for other additives, will vary with the particular
pigment system chosen. Clay pigments require
approximately 0.18% AMP on the weight of the pigment
for minimum dispersion viscosity. Titanium dioxide
pigments require approximately 0.13% AMP; calcium
carbonate pigments require approximately 0.19% AMP.
A 50-50 mixture of clay and titanium dioxide can be
dispersed readily using approximately 0.16% AMP on the
weight of pigment.
The amount needed for any particular mixture will vary,
but the optimum amount needed can be readily
determined by the formulator. That optimum level normally
will not exceed 0.25% AMP based on the weight of the
pigments involved.

Slurry Preparation
Slurries are conveniently prepared by adding the pigment
with agitation to water which contains the required amount
of AMP and other dispersant. Please refer to Technical
Data Sheets No. 10 and 10A for information on the
chemical properties, physical properties, toxicology, and
handling instructions for AMP-95.
