Hello!
Welcome to the July 2015 edition
of the Aboriginal Natural Resource
Management newsletter.
This edition looks at some successful
community projects and upcoming
events to take place this year, as well
as current funding opportunities.
I will be taking leave over the next
month from July 8 - August 12.

In May this year, Jagera Daran

installed a cultural heritage display at
the Brookfield District Museum.
With support from the Whats your
nature? initiative, Jagera Daran have
created a permanent display of
artefacts at the museum important
for creating awareness and cultural
learning in the broader community.

Much of the cultural material on

display at the Brookfield museum
was hand made by Mr James Bonner
who used traditional techniques
and tools. Jagera Darans cultural
heritage display has encouraged
understanding and appreciation of
the use of and cultural significance of
nature to Aboriginal people.
Whats your nature? is an initiative
delivered through a joint partnership
of the organisations listed below,
through funding from the Australian
Government.

to take place over the next three
months from July - September.

believes the festival will provide a
unique opportunity for people to
experience and celebrate the culture
of the Nughi, Nunukul and Goenpul
clans of Quandamooka.
Hear our dreaming stories from
Winnam (Wynnum), Narlung (Manly),
Cullen-Cullen (Wellington Point),
Mulgumpin (Moreton Island),
Minjerribah (North Stradbroke
Island), Nandeebie (Cleveland),
Canaipa (Russell Island),
Jencoomercha (Macleay Island),
Ngudooroo (Lamb Island), Coochie
Mudlo Island, Turkroorar (Peel
Island), Tangeera (Green Island),
Noogoon (St Helena) and Bungumba
(Mud Island) and deepen your
understanding of this area.
Activities for all ages have been
planned across Brisbane, Redlands
and the Moreton Bay region to
celebrate the culture, country and
people of the Quandamooka region.
The festival includes cultural tours,
art exhibitions and workshops,
traditional song and dance, outdoor
film nights, Black History Month
events, markets, whale watching
tours, sailing regattas, sculpture
and photography competitions,

on 4 July at Goompi (Dunwich),
Minjerribah (North Stradbroke
Island), followed by NAIDOC week
celebrations.
Yura Djalungbilla - Welcome of the
Whales Festival on 25 July at Point
Lookout, North Stradbroke Island.
The Quandamooka Quiz
and Comedy Night, hosted by
Indigenous comedian Sean
Choolburra, on 25 September.
Pacific Tides Festival on 8 August
at Cleveland.
4 Islands Sail and Sculpture
Festival throughout the Southern
Moreton Bay Islands, starting 1
August.
Ongoing whale watching and
cultural tours.
Quandamooka artists showcases
at the Manly Markets and RedFest,
Cleveland.
Activities in the Brisbane area,
including art exhibitions and Black
History Month events.
Kunjiel Corroboree Closing
Ceremony, featuring traditional
dancers, live music, workshops and
markets, on the weekend of 26-27
September, North Stradbroke Island.

This years theme highlights
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
peoples strong spiritual and cultural
connection to land and sea.
NAIDOC week is an opportunity to
pay respects to country; honour
those who work to preserve land,
sea and culture and to share the
stories about significant sites or
sacred places.

Pamanyungan Elders NAIDOC

Dinner Dance, Saturday, 11
July, Caboolture RSL Club,
Caboolture
Celebrate NAIDOC with at the
Pamanyungan Elders NAIDOC
Dinner Dance. The event includes a
3 course meal featuring traditional
foods, Gold Coast Magicians with
table magic and show, Angus
Rabbitt and Band, trivia and
auctions for a night of celebration,
reconciliation and sharing time in
this important week.

Logan City NAIDOC Family Fun

Day, Wednesday, July 8, Logan
City, 10am
The Ganyjuu organisation have
organised a free event to showcase
the culture of Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander people living in Logan
City Catchment. The family day will
include free local entertainment,
rides, activities and food.

Make your own mini bark

Canoe, Tuesday July 7,
Caloundra Regional Gallery,
1.30 - 3.30pm
The Caloundra Regional Gallery are
hosting a NAIDOC activity where
people can get involved in making
their own mini Bark Canoe out of
Pikki Bean Palm. Lyndon Davis
and Brent Miller, traditional Gubbi
Gubbi / Kabi Kabi Custodians,
will present storytelling on local
traditional Aboriginal history.
The community can hear about
traditional Bark Canoe and Fish Net
Making revitalisation projects, and
learn about the different processes
needed to make a traditional
Aboriginal Bark Canoe.
The event includes a Welcome
to Country with Didgeridoo
presentation and traditional fire
lighting.
Bookings are essential. Cost $8
per child or $20 family up to three
children (parents/carers free).

Musgrave Family Fun Day,

Friday July 10, Musgrave Park,
8am - 5pm
This year the Musgrave family fun
day will have dance, free kids rides,
sideshow alley, traditional food, an
elders tent, arts and crafts, live
performances, information stalls, a
live radio broadcast, face painting
and more for the whole family to
enjoy. Entry is by gold donation.

Our Land, our future
The Indigenous Land Corporation
(ICL) has launched their new
program, Our Land Our Future. In
this program, ILC have developed
a funding stream aimed at working
with Indigenous groups and potential
co-investors to support land
management projects.
This funding stream has an
open timeline and no application
forms. It relies on Aboriginal
groups contacting ILC directly to
discuss ideas for sustainable land
management project which might
include:
