2014 Rioja Annual Trade Tasting

Welcome to Rioja
The inaugural Wines from Rioja tasting in 2013, attended by over 600 members of the UK wine trade,
was a great success and highlighted the enthusiasm for a dedicated Rioja tasting in the UK.
As Riojas largest export market, the UK is central to Riojas continued success as an internationally
recognised premium wine region, and this tasting offers an unparalleled opportunity to showcase the
quality and diversity of Spains flagship wine region.
Theres a diverse range of over 500 red, white and ros wines from across the Rioja region available to
taste and over 100 wineries represented. Many winemakers and winery representatives are present on
the 81 tables, while separate focus zones will offer themed tastings, shining a light on the breadth of
styles available from the region. For those looking for something new, theres also a dedicated area for
wineries seeking importers in the UK.
This year weve introduced a series of masterclasses to create an added educational element and offer
visitors a further insight into the quality and diversity of the region. These will be led by leading experts
and Rioja enthusiasts Tim Atkin MW, Sarah Jane Evans MW and Ronan Sayburn MS. You can find out
more about their topics on p.105.

Introduction to Rioja
Nestled between the Sierra de Cantabria and the Sierra de la
Demanda, Rioja is perfectly situated for wine production, sheltered
from both the cooling influences of the Atlantic to the north, and the
hot Mediterranean summers to the south.
Riojas offering is strikingly diverse from fresh crisp whites, to complex,
aged Grandes Reservas, and varietal wines from indigenous grapes not
found anywhere else in the world. Theres no such thing as a Rioja.
The Rioja region is situated in Spains gastronomic heartland, and this
long association with food is reflected in the wines, which are
exceptionally food-friendly, and lend themselves well to pairing with
an array of different cuisines.

Bodegas Valdemar, based in Oyn, is one

of the few producers in Rioja that owns all
of its own vineyards, with over 300ha
across the three sub-regions of Baja,
Alavesa and Alta. The winery is very much
forward-looking and is renowned for its
pioneering work in the region: it was the
first to introduce the saigne method for
Rosado wines, and barrel fermentation for
white wines. More recently, through the
Inspiracin range, the winery's philosophy
of innovation has continued, by using
indigenous varietals including Maturana,
Graciano and Tempranillo Blanco.

Castillo Clavijo wines offer the opportunity

to readily discover and enjoy first-hand the
personality of Rioja wine. Among the
550ha of vineyards supervised by Castillo
Clavijo, every traditional Rioja grape
variety is grown: Tempranillo, Garnacha,
Graciano, Mazuelo, Viura, Malvasa, and
Garnacha. The diversity of terroirs found
among the vineyards provides the
producers with the opportunity to work
with vines at different altitudes and with
different orientations to produce young
Monte Clavijo wines as well as barrel-aged
Castillo Clavijo wines, faithfully
representing the traditional style of Rioja
while staying very much up-to-date, thanks
to young winemaker Paloma Redondo.

Biurko is a family winery, located in
Bargota, a small village that lies at the
base of Sierra de Yoar (Sierra de
Cantabria), at an altitude of 600m
above sea level. The winery produces a
wide variety of wines with organic
certification from the 45ha. The wines
identity is based on the continental
climate, high altitude and special soil of
the area. The wines are fresh, natural
and well balanced with character and
structure - the result of healthy vines
and selected grapes.

believed that they could produce fine

Bodegas Campillo is a family owned

winery, currently run by Pilar Martnez
Zabala, whose father Don Julio Faustino
Martnez first planted vineyards near the
medieval village of Laguardia in 1978. The
beautiful winery is surrounded by 50ha
of vineyards with another 150ha of older
vines within a seven mile radius of
Laguardia. Managed in addition the result
is a range of elegant and balanced wines
with good fruit due to the climate. This is
due the combination of the northerly
position, the high altitude and limestone

In the 19th century, Francisco Javier Solano y

Eulate, owner of a large area of vineyards in
Villabuena, on the advice of the famous
Bordeaux winemaker of the time, M. Pineau,
decided to start making and ageing his wines
according to methods imported from the
Mdoc under the label Marqus de la
Solana. Since then, the winery has changed
its name, but not its philosophy. It is still a
family run business with the fourth and fifth
generation incorporating new ideas and
modern approaches whilst remaining faithful
to the concepts and values since its
foundation: family, estate vineyards,
respect for quality and work well done.

founded in 1996 with the aim of
producing quality wines with personality

the small family winery was established

and is a result of the work of the
Landaluce family and associates who put
their knowledge and experience into the
production of the wines. The secret lies in
the know-how of the team and, of course,
the raw materials used. The winery has
30ha of vines - mainly Tempranillo - at San
Gregorio, Carravalseca, San Cristbal, and
La Gloria in the Laguardia district at the
centre of the Cantabrian mountain
micro-climate in the Rioja Alavesa
sub-zone. 15ha of this vine area are over
40 years old, alongside other vines which

Muga is a family-owned winery with
220ha of owned vineyards located in
Rioja Alta region. It was founded in
1932 by Isaac Muga Martnez and is
characterised by traditional production
methods such as red wine fining with
fresh egg whites and racking of wines
by gravity every four months.
Fermentation, storage and ageing is
done in wooden casks which are built
in the winery cooperage.

in the world. This is the reality of Muriel Wines,
one of the most important groups in Spain.
Established in Rioja, its history is that of gradual
expansion based on the sum of projects and
dreams. The origin is Muriel, the renowed
winery in Elciego (Rioja Alavesa), and today the
group brings together five different wineries:
Muriel, Egua, Marqus de Elciego, Real
Compaa, and the newest acquisition, the

Bodegas Miguel ngel Muro comprises

35ha of freehold vineyards (79%
Tempranillo, 11% Viura, 5% Graciano, 5%
Maturana) in the municipal areas of
Lapuebla de Labarca and Laguardia,
with vines averaging 40 years old. The
Muro family has been growing vines
for generations. The vineyards are
south-facing, receiving a small amount of
rainfall throughout the year. All these
characteristics contribute to the excellent
personality and quality of the grapes and
wines. The winery has been updated with
250 French and American barrels. The
range includes red and white young wine
and Crianza, Reserva, high expression
and varietal aged wines.

Bodegas Riojanas, founded in 1890 by

two families (the Artacho family and
Rafael Carreras), was born out of passion
and tradition for making wines. Based in
Cenicero the winery belongs to a select
group of Rioja houses with over a century
of winemaking tradition. Bodegas
Riojanas controls more than 300ha of the
best vineyards in Cenicero, San
Vicente de la Sonsierra and nearby towns
and villages. Whilst Riojas quintessential
grape variety is Tempranillo, Bodegas
Riojanas also owns one of the largest
surface areas dedicated to Mazuelo and
Graciano in the wine region. These grape
varieties bring personality to the wines

Bodegas Zugober was founded in 1987 by
Eduardo Gmez Palma and his wife Maribel
Bernardo. The name Zugober is an acronym
and each letter corresponds to the surname
of each of the family members who have, in
one way or another, helped create the
bodega and its wines. Bodegas Zugober
owns 10ha of vineyards, 90% of which are
Tempranillo, the rest Graciano, Mazuelo,
and a small percentage of Garnacha and
others. All of the grapes are hand-picked
and carefully selected. The vineyards range
from 340-600m above sea level.

Bodegas Patrocinio is a cooperative

located in the village of Uruuela in
Rioja Alta. The higher altitude of the
vineyards - 450-590m - ensures finer, more
elegant wines. The co-ops 200 members
own 600ha divided into 1500 plots, of
which 95% is Tempranillo and the rest is
Garnacha, Mazuelo, Graciano, and some
white varieties. The older vines are
traditionally gobelet trained, while the
newer vines are cordon trained. The
viticultural team spends a lot of time in
the vineyards improving techniques and
ensuring that the best quality grapes
arrive at the winery.

Murrieta is run by a young, dedicated,

near the southern tip of the Rioja Alta, a

Vallemayor, based at Fuenmayor in the
Rioja Alta, is a close-knit family bodega
producing an impressive range
dedicated to quality and value. It is the
result of the vision of Luis Prez Foncea
who after retirement from working the
family vineyards began selling wines,
finally making enough money to build his
own winery. Luis three sons took over in
1996, registering the new name
Vallemayor for the business. They own a
55ha estate, growing predominantly
Tempranillo, and have direct control over
a further 60ha of local growers. The
winery, built in 1984, combines modern
technology and traditional methods.

Hacienda el Ternero is an island of
250ha in Rioja Alta. It dates from the
medieval times in 1077 when it belonged
to the monastery of Santa Mara de
Herrera. Its history, location and height of
the vineyards (650 above sea level) make
it a unique place. The Finca has been
producing wines throughout its
history and it has 60ha under vines
planted with Tempranillo, Garnacha,
Mazuelo and Viura grown in a privileged
microclimate thanks to the influence of
the Obarenes Mountains.

Bodegas Medrano Irazu is a family winery

which was founded by Luis Medrano in
1984 joined by his son, Amador, in 2001.
The winery emerged with the intention of
becoming one of the best Rioja wines.
The majority of the old vines (30 years
plus) are located in El Villar at 600m
above sea level in what is considered the
grand cru area of La Rioja due to the
fine iron-rich, reddish sand on the surface
and a limestone subsoil. The wines bear
the distinct stamp of the terroir.

In November 1956, a group of growers

got together to form what is known
today as Viedos de Aldenueva. Over a
century has gone by since the first vines
were planted in Aldeanueva. Its
excellent climate and rich soils together
with the know-how of the local growers,
resulted in grapes that were highly
valued for their colour and alcohol
content. These were - and have
continued to be until present day - the
basis of many aged Rioja wines. Grapes
of this quality lead to significant
demand which meant expanding the
vineyards to the current 2,600ha.

The Focus Tables

White Rioja
Rioja is often associated with red wine, but the region also produces excellent white
wines. Here is an opportunity to taste through the spectrum - from fresh and crisp,
through to barrel-fermented and oak-aged.
Rioja beyond Tempranillo

Tempranillo is the main red grape associated with Rioja, but here is a chance to see the
great wines Rioja is also producing from Garnacha, Graciano and Maturana.
Contemporary
Rioja produces a diverse selection of wines styles from traditional aged to modern.
Here, the contemporary styles will be available to taste
Reserva
Aged for a minimum of 3 years, with at least a year in barrel, the Reserva style is
unique to Rioja and offer excellent value for money.
Gran Reserva
Produced in top vintages, Gran Reserva wines spend at least 2 years in barrel and 3
years in bottle before release and have an exceptional capacity for further ageing.

Tim Atkin MW - 12pm - Rioja: A Sense of Place
Rioja is often regarded as a blended wine, combining
grapes from its three sub-regions - but that's only part of
the story. Tim Atkin MW will guide you through six wines
from individual estates or vineyard sites, all of which
display unmistakeable terroir and individuality.
Sarah Jane Evans MW - 2pm - Guiding consumers

through the Rioja classifications
Rioja is recognised as one of the best, and best value, fine
wine regions in the world. This tasting of established and
award-winning Riojas reveals the diversity and quality in
the region, with white and red wines to tempt customers
to trade up from Crianza through to Gran Reserva.
Ronan Sayburn MS 3.30pm

In this masterclass we will be looking at the food
compatibility of Rioja; if oak can be a harmonious element
or a hinderance, if certain foods work better with more
mature wines and how acidity and tannin work in the
context of food pairing.

Our Presenters
Tim Atkin MW
Tim is an award-winning wine writer and Master of Wine with
28 years experience. He writes for a number of publications,
including The World of Fine Wine, Intelligent Life, Gourmet
Traveller Wine, Imbibe, Decanter, Wine-Searcher, Fine Drink
(China), and Woman and Home, and appears regularly on
BBC1s Saturday Kitchen. Tim is a member of the Three
Wine Men, Co-Chairman of the International Wine
Challenge and has won over 25 awards for his journalism
and photography.
Sarah Jane became a Master of Wine in 2006 and this year

she was made a member of the Gran Orden de Caballeros de
Vino, only the fourth woman in the organisations history, for
her services to Spanish wine. In addition to co-chairing the
DWWA Spanish panel Sarah Jane has judged wine
internationally in Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, Georgia,
Germany, as well as the UK, she has written three books,
currently writes about wine for Decanter and for a number of
consumer magazines, hosts consumer and specialist wine
tastings, and is a former President of the Guild of Food
Writers and a Founder Member of the Academy of Chocolate.
Ronan has been involved in the wine business for nearly 20

years. He is currently developing his own business - The RS
Wine Academy - and is a Master Sommelier (one of only 214
in the world), previous winner of the UK Sommelier of the Year
competition and twice a representative for the UK in the
European Sommelier Competition. Ronan is a regular judge
for the Sommelier of the Year Competition and various tasting
competitions and an examiner for the Court of Master
Sommeliers. He previously worked for the Gordon Ramsay
group as Executive Head Sommelier for eight years plus
created the wine lists and trained wine service teams for
Claridges, the Connaught, the Savoy, Boxwood Caf, Maze
and several overseas operations including Dubai, Tokyo
and New York.

Rioja Red Grape Varieties
Tempranillo
Considered native to Rioja, Tempranillo is the regions classic red grape
variety, accounting for more than 75% of vineyard area in Rioja. On its
own it produces soft supple wines, with aromas of soft red summer fruits.
Tempranillo produces wines of great structure, wines which can be
enjoyed young and fresh for early drinking or matured for many years
to become wines renowned for their depth, character and elegance.
Mazuelo
Known as Carignan/Cariena elsewhere in the world, Mazuelo accounts
for around 3% of plantings in Rioja, and adds colour, weight and tannins
to Tempranillo blends, helping the wine to age gracefully. Mazuelo on
its own is very rare.
Garnacha
This grape variety offers good extract and alcohol content, adding
warmth and spice both for early drinking and longer aged styles of
Rioja. Single varietal Garnacha wines are starting to make their way
to the UK.
Graciano
Indigenous to Rioja, and rarely seen elsewhere, a small quantity of
Graciano adds extra fruit and elegance to a Tempranillo blend, setting it
in good stead for extended ageing. Plantings have increased significantly
in recent years, in response to the growing popularity of 100% Graciano
wines. As a varietal wine, Graciano shows great character and finesse,
producing wines which are often very long lived.
Maturana Tinta
An ancient indigenous Rioja variety not seen anywhere else in the world,
Maturana Tinta was all but extinct until its recent reintroduction, and
plantings are now on the increase, as winemakers prize its deep colour,
elegant acidity, and balsamic spicy character.

Rioja White Grape Varieties
Viura
Better known as Macabeo elsewhere in Spain, Viura is Riojas
principal white grape variety, producing wines which are clean, fresh,
zesty and lightly herby when young, but which also respond well to
being fermented in barrel, developing complex smoky nuances.
Malvasa
Not to be confused with Malvasia grown elsewhere in the world (an
entirely different variety), Malvasa de Rioja is used in small quantities
alongside Viura to make classic oak-aged white wines. Its savoury
character combined with the fresh crispness of the Viura and the
vanilla of the oak produce wines of great individuality and style.
Garnacha Blanca
Possibly originating as a mutation of red Garnacha, this varietal
possesses very similar characteristics to its red counterpart, and can be
used in small amounts to add weight and body to Viura wines which are
aged for 6 months or more. Small amounts of varietal wines are made
from Garnacha Blanca grapes from very old vines to produce
concentrated and exceptional white wines.
Tempranillo Blanco
Resulting from a natural genetic mutation of red Tempranillo found in
an old vineyard in 1988 and not found anywhere else in the world,
Tempranillo Blanco is becoming increasingly popular as a blending
component, offering an intensely aromatic profile characteristic of
citrus, tropical fruit, and bananas.
Maturana Blanca
Riojas oldest known variety, Maturana Blanca provides high acidity,
and herbal, citrus and apple nuances to blends.
As of 2007, Rioja producers have also been allowed to use the following non-indigenous varieties;
Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo in minority percentages in blends to bring diversity
to wine production while maintaining the wines identity and differentiation.

Rioja Subregions
Rioja Alavesa
Rioja Alavesa is located in the foothills of the Cantabrian mountains to the north and run to the
River Ebro in the south. The mountains help create a micro-climate by offering some shelter from
the Atlantic weather and wind - nonetheless the rainfall here is almost double that of Rioja Baja.
Tempranillo reigns in Rioja Alavesa, accounting for around 80% of all plantings in the mostly chalk
and clay soils, with Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano contributing to red blends, while Viura,
Malvasa and White Garnacha are grown for white wines.
Rioja Alta
Rioja Alta, to the north-west and south of the Ebro River, stretches as far as the city of Logroo.
Elegance and poise is the hallmark of wines made here with Rioja Alta Tempranillo. Mazuelo is
occasionally added to wines from this area to add tannins and colour. Rioja Alta's wines have
a particular affinity with oak barrels and extended ageing.
Rioja Baja
The Rioja Baja sub-region, which forms the largest portion of Rioja, extends south-east of the
provincial capital, Logroo, to the small town of Alfaro. It accounts for 40% of Rioja's wine
production, with most of its vineyards located south of the River Ebro. Unlike Rioja Alta and Rioja
Alavesa, the Rioja Baja has very warm and dry summers. The chalk content in the soil is minimal,
with larger proportions of silt and alluvial components. The low-altitude vineyards here are mostly
planted with Garnacha vines, as they are best suited to the extreme conditions, producing wines
which are high in alcohol but lower in acidity and aroma profile
