CSR - It starts with personal responsibility

'Energy' is the theme of our sixth CSR report and again we
let our clients speak for us. Because our business is about
people: all people in our global network, and our clients and
business partners across continents and cultures. We
believe that corporate social responsibility starts with
people, with personal responsibility: what an individual finds
important and how they see the future. Their personal belief
can have a huge impact on the future of our markets.
It starts at home
People are increasingly aware of their own influence on the
environment, adopting green technologies such as solar
panels at homes, driving e-cars or just using their bikes.
They see the importance, the savings - and also the fun. We
want our people to take that attitude, that motivation to the
market, raising awareness of energy consumption, waste,
and eco-footprint - with clear choices in CAPEX and OPEX.
Our work is an important part of the client's investment,
whether it is a small or large project, we can achieve
significant effects over long-term operability.
It starts with trust
Ours is a people business that is based on people working
together to achieve a common target...
We do our business ethically and we believe in doing
business in a proper and professional manner.
It starts with a conversation
We are contributing to savings throughout the supply chain,
especially in Food, Pharma, Agriculture, Chemicals,
Automotive, and Oil & Gas. A project starts with a
conversation with the client: what does your future look like?
what innovations do you expect? how can we help you? We
translate long-term needs into solutions in energy efficiency,
clean technology, green chemistry and green labelling always expanding our knowledge base.

Jrgen von Hollen

Robert Claasen

It starts with sharing

We are stepping into the next phase of our global network
organization. Today's world is volatile, with political and
economic challenges. We have to be agile to deal with
change. Our international clients still expect us to deliver
uniform quality throughout the world. We make our
knowledge available to our colleagues, clients, and markets,
by sharing and developing platforms. As part of Bilfinger, we
can offer options in cooperation with our sister companies
that others can't, and we have the backing to go the extra
mile.
It starts with safety
Our ethical base is solid: safety and worldwide compliance
are in our DNA. All people on all sites need to return home
each day in good health. From past incidents, we have
learned that safety rules and materials are the basics, and
people's awareness and active response are the key. We
see the results of our compliance approach in plants which
can operate under stricter regulations in coming decades, in
client satisfaction, and in intellectual concepts.
Consequently, our shareholders are willing to invest in
innovation.
It starts with talent
Our approach also attracts new talent. The next generation
of young engineers has grown up with social interaction and
using big data for efficiency. They want to influence their
own environment and the entire supply chain. We believe
each individual wants to develop their talent. We believe in
inspiring leadership, helping people to continue developing
their skills and talents. We stimulate people to take initiative,
start conversations, form teams, challenge the leadership to
provide support, involve clients, and have a positive effect on
our markets. We believe in you. Believe in yourself - it starts
with you!

People, the basis for our success

Our clients
Tebodin combines local knowledge with a
global approach in order to serve a variety of
clients around the world. We are proud to
serve a significant number of clients who are
front-runners in technology, sustainability
and innovation. We create a bridge between
the worlds of consultancy and engineering,
giving us a unique in-depth ability to both
understand our clients needs and capitalize
on promising economic and technical market
developments. Whether clients operate
internationally or locally, we adapt our way
of working to serve them best. This has led
to a dynamic, flexible and client-oriented
organization that consistently exceeds
clients expectations. As a result, we
maintain long-lasting relationships with
many of our clients.

Our employees
Tebodin employees are ambitious, forwardthinking, committed to quality, and focused
on results, safety and sustainability. Their

and drive are the cornerstone of the success
of Tebodin and its clients. Consequently, we
are dedicated to providing a challenging and

employees can develop to their full potential,
irrespective of gender, age, cultural
background, religion or color. We inspire and
support our people, so they can continue to
strive for excellence, for the benefit of our
clients and the environment.

Societies and communities

With so much impact on so many peoples
lives, we feel a substantial responsibility
toward the societies and communities in
which we work. We realize that for large
companies like ours, it is quite easy to live up
to this responsibility, given the means, reach
and funds we have at our disposal. Social
responsibility is evident in a number of
partnerships we are engaged in. We have
business partnerships that explore and
develop new challenges related to
sustainability and protection of the
environment. In the area of education and
training, we engage in partnerships intended
to share our knowledge and expertise.
Local present
We are constantly seeking new
opportunities all over the world. When we
decide to enter a market, we set a distinctly
Tebodin procedure in motion. We believe it is
key to settle into the local market and to
employ local staff, to connect with local
people and support the community. Like
everything we do, our expansion strategy is
all about people. Being successful is not just
about archieving business targets; it is about
spreading knowledge and opportunities and
about sharing cultures. About working
together to make our world a little bit better.

Bilfinger, part of society

At Bilfinger, sustainability means putting
the implementation and achievement of
economic, environmental and social goals
on equal footing. It is a core element of the
Groups Vision Statement and shapes the
relationship with employees, customers
and other stakeholders.

A major share of the Groups services is

provided in the areas of efficiency
enhancement, lifecycle optimization,
resource conservation, environmental
technology and renewable energy. In all
projects the focus is on the lifecycle
approach, taking into account the various
phases in the service life of plants and real
estate.

Over the long term, Bilfinger intends to

further solidify its position as a sustainable
company. The objective is to make an
active contribution to the conservation of
resources, to advance and develop its
employees and to provide a positive
impetus for society wherever business
activities are located.

A safe, successful
and sustainable business
Being an international company operating in
many different environments, we
consistently focus on our responsibility
which starts with the top-level management
in our company. Working from many offices
we fully understand the potential impacts we
may have in the local communities and its
environments.
As our business continues to develop and
move into new markets, we recognize the
new skills our existing and future leaders
require, in order to maintain and improve our
commitment to CSR. To this end we continue
to implement management and leadership
programs to equip them for the safety and
environmental challenges ahead. Some of
our CSR focus points are our commitments
to our workforce, our clients, the

Safety Leadership Training

Achieving Zero Harm requires full support
from every employee, starting at the top of
the organization. Our Safety Leadership
training program is designed to engage
Tebodin senior management and to raise
their awareness of responsibility toward
safety. The program sets out to explain that
leaders have a significant impact on an

Safe manhours
milestones
in 2014
Safety on site is a topic that can never be
stressed enough. Many measures are
taken and campaigns are organized to
secure safety in projects. One of the
indicators to monitor safe man-hours is
measuring Lost Time Injuries (LTI),
meaning the occurrence of accidents that
lead to absence from work. Milestones of
'man-hours with zero LTI', are celebrated
with clients, thanking workers on site for
their cautiousness and compliance to the
safety rules. A selection of the milestones
that Tebodin reached in 2014:
January: 100,000 man-hours on Basell
Advanced Polyolefins (BAPT) in Thailand
- 250,000 man-hours for Huntsman Tioxide
in Malaysia
April: 5 million man-hours at the BMW
Brilliance Automotive New Engine Plant in
Shenyang, China
June: 2,1 million man-hours after
upgrading the 60,000m2 plant of Coca-Cola
Beverage Vietnam Ltd. -100,000 manhours for Heineken / Multi Bintang
Indonesia on the greenfield soft drink
plant on East Java, Indonesia - 500,000
man-hours for Nuplex Resins Co. Ltd in
Changshu, China
July: 7,5 years at NAM facilities (Dutch
national gas company) in the Netherlands
August: 3,5 million man-hours on Cargills
Cocoa & Chocolate Plant, Indonesia
October: 1 million man-hours at the CocaCola Pinya Beverage in Myanmar
December: 1 million man-hours on

Joint patrols in India

Joint patrols on sites are a good opportunity

for project managers and construction site
workers to collaborate, manage
expectations, generate feedback and make
improvements in existing procedures. In
India, Tebodin pays a lot of attention to

organizing joint patrols on a regular basis

with clients and contractors on several
construction sites. This initiative helped
identifying hazards, unsafe acts and
conditions at sites.

Huntsman awards Tebodin

for contribution to safety

It also gives good understanding among

stakeholders to take the existing safety
compliance to the next level. To increase
effectiveness of joint patrols, measures like
filing in joint patrol reports, taking pictures of
hazardous situations before and after,
speaking to workers involving them in
monitoring hazardous behavior or situations,
pointing out their active role in preventing
hazards are issued. Part of the constructive
dialogue with workers is to generate their
feedback, discuss solutions and
improvements together, and point out and
praise good safety behavior. This has proven
to be a successful approach to prevent Lost
Time Injuries on many Tebodin projects in
India.

Healthy
month in
Indonesia
In September 2014 Tebodin in Indonesia
organized a Health Month to raise
awareness on maintaining a healthy lifestyle,
eating healthy food and exercising.
Employees were treated to a healthy snack:
fruit salad and fruit juice. Posters with
information on office exercises and general
occupational health tips decorated the office.
The monthly newsletter featured a healthy
lifestyle flyer. Furthermore, several employees
participated in the car-free Sunday city walk
in downtown Jakarta, starting with a
breakfast at 6:30.

10

On their meeting, the management team also

tried to stay fit and organized a cycle tour
cycling is such a typical Dutch habit along
the beautiful and healthy scenery of rice fields
and green countryside.
In April, the annual contractor awards were
handed over to Huntsmans permanent
contractors in the Netherlands like Tebodin.
Huntsman is a global manufacturer and
marketer of differentiated chemicals.
Tebodin has worked on many Huntsman
projects, such as Keystone and Capstone in
Rotterdam. On these plants, Huntsman
produces polyols, key ingredients for the
production of polyurethanes.

Tebodin received a gold certificate - the

highest honor awarded to a contractor - for
its contribution to safety on the various
Huntsman projects. A total of fourteen
companies received a certificate. Tebodin
constantly strives to improve itself in terms
of safety, to ultimately receive a platinum
certificate.

Abu Dhabi commits to the H in QOHSE

In Abu Dhabi, Tebodin has rolled out an
intensive 13-week program commit to be fit
to make people aware of a healthy lifestyle.
Over the past few years, Tebodin in Abu Dhabi
has put a lot of emphasis on QOHSE issues at
different levels. The results of these efforts
were impressive. Part of QOHSE is Health.
Many people take their own health for
granted. The program encouraged people to

Biggest loser competition

Tebodin & Partner in Muscat launched The
Best Loser weight loss competition. It took
13 weeks and any employee with a Body
Mass Index (BMI) above 24 was eligible to
participate in this competition. It was
initiated not only to improve the employees
health but also to guide them on how to
maintain a healthier lifestyle. The competition

was received with great enthusiasm - 210

employees participated. A nurse from the
Hattat Policlinic measured participants BMI
on a regular basis, provided information on
how to lose weight in a healthy manner and
awarded the winners. The Top 5 losers were
awarded based on biggest overall weight
loss and best weight to body weight ratio.

commit to be fit in this year and beyond. The
program provided employees with a health
checkup by a professional of a local health
service provider. For all staff, ten health
ambassadors went around the office with
morning exercises, informational flyers and
quizzes, healthy recipes and fruit snacks.

Save driving
in winter
Driving in difficult
winter conditions is
much safer if one is
prepared. Therefore,
Tebodin offices in
countries facing
severe winter
conditions organize
drive safe
campaigns yearly.
Tebodin in Romania set up safety
presentations and road safety discussions,
distributing flyers with tips to employees and
visitors in its offices. The focus was on drivers
adapting their way of driving and on vehicles
being properly equipped and prepared for
varied weather, road and traffic conditions.
The aim of the campaign was to provide
comprehensive advice and guidance for those
who travel, so they get home safe.
In the Czech Republic a skid school was
organized, offering employees the chance to
experience how to prevent dangerous and
critical situations on different surfaces.
Simulation on slippery surfaces, practicing
braking, skidding on wet and icy surfaces and
training on controlling vehicle behavior under
extreme conditions were part of the training.

Safety contest in Hungary

In October 2014 Tebodin in Hungary
announced a safety contest. Employees
could compete in two different subjects:
Who knows more? Teams of maximum
6 people answered a number of questions in
several rounds.
Who has the safest site? With support of
local management and OHSE
representatives the site with the best safety
awareness was announced Safest Site
2014. The competition ran until mid-

December and 17 teams participated in the

Who knows more contest, while 13 sites
wished to be nominated as safest site. The
award went to a project where a penalty
system was introduced to enforce the OHSE
requirements of Tebodin. Contractors
violating the rules have to pay a penalty.
The system led to better understanding and
awareness of the OHSE principles, and
resulted in less non-conformities.

11

Development of employees
a high priority

12

As peoples business, development of our

employees has a high priority. Within
Tebodin we use both a bottom-up and topdown approach for training and
development. Each office is free to develop
their employees by organizing local training
programs regarding soft skills, presentation
skills, language and techniques.
Besides these local programs the Tebodin
Academy offers international development
programs in line with the three career paths
we have for employees:
- Technical career path (High Professional
program)
- General Management career path
(Advanced Manager program)
- Project Management career path
(Project Management program)
As managers play an important role in the
development of employees, the workshop
Identifying and Development of Talents has
been devised in 2013 in order to identify
talented employees and accelerate their
development. The majority of the
management teams worldwide were trained

in 2014. The training of the Eastern Europe

management team is on the 2015 agenda. All
trained managers are encouraged to
cascade their learnings down to the local
management teams, which will enhance the
recognition of talents.
The Young Talent Program (YTP) is set up for
talents under the age of 35. Networking with
colleagues from all over the world, working
on an exciting business cases and spending
time on individual development are the main
topics within this program.
All the Academy programs are international
programs through which we also stimulate
the participants to broaden their network of
peers within the organization. In 2014,
around 200 colleagues participated in a
Tebodin development program.
Tebodin managers participate on a regular
basis in programs run by the Bilfinger
Academy. Discussions are ongoing as to
how to align these programs with the
Tebodin ones, which is promising for the
future.

Energy
With rising extraction costs and
fluctuation on the global market,
prices of oil and gas are under
pressure. We must work towards a
more flexible system, balancing
fossil fuels and renewable
resources, with larger and local
stations for improved balance
between generation and demand.
Driven by CO2-reduction
commitments, many companies
want a climate-neutral production
facility. These companies have
multiple options, including reducing
energy consumption, using
renewable energy, collecting CO2
and reusing it to grow algae for
biofuel. The ideal solution is a smart

Fifty designs for green

telecom
Magyar Telekom Plc. in Hungary has 1,200 buildings all over the country. In the last
years, it became clear that there are many challenges to redesign and rebuild server
places and office buildings to enhance their economic parameters. As part of the
process, the company wanted to reduce energy consumption and save energy costs.
Tebodin already had a general mechanical designer agreement with Magyar Telekom
Plc. since 2012, and the companies enjoyed a good relationship.
For this challenge, the contract was extended in 2014, with architecture, statics and
electrical parts. The cooperation resulted in over fifty different designs for Magyar
Telekom Plc., including a server cooling heat recovery system, solar panel system,
water-water heat pumps, and heating optimization. Most, but not all designs were
about energy efficiency, such as the gas planning. Magyar Telekom Plc. took care of
construction management themselves, and all designs were constructed
successfully. In the end, the old, inconvenient working places were brought up to
todays requirements and are now much better work environments for the employees.
Tebodins project manager Mr. Lszl Zsila worked on the rebuilding and
modernization with Magyar Telekom Plc.'s senior development managers Mr. Gbor

Vestas is taking its own medicine

'WE NEED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY, AS COMPANIES, TO HELP AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE, AND THE RENEWABLE WAY IS
A SURE AND SHORT WAY,' SAYS MR. KLAUS RNDE, SENIOR MANAGER AT VESTAS, A GLOBAL ENERGY COMPANY
DEDICATED EXCLUSIVELY TO WIND ENERGY: 'WE ARE TAKING OUR OWN MEDICINE IN USING 100 PERCENT RENEWABLE
ELECTRICITY, PROVING THAT IT CAN BE DONE.'
A pure player
Vestas was founded in 1898 as a blacksmith shop in western
Denmark. The company started producing wind turbines in
1979, and has since specialized in wind energy solutions,
gaining a market-leading position with more than 64 GW of
installed wind power and more than 42 GW under service
globally. Wind is Vestas business and passion. Mr. Rnde:
'We call ourselves a pure player within the wind industry.
We are fully dedicated to wind and wind energy.' In Poland,
Tebodin has worked with Vestas on several windfarm
projects for clients like GDF Suez and Polenergia.
High expectations
As a company with such a high focus on renewable energy,
Vestas is saturated with sustainability. 'We look at corporate
social responsibility both inside-out and outside-in,' says Mr.
Rnde: 'The market has high expectations of us, of the safety
of our operations and the footprint of our product. Investors
ask questions from many angles, on infrastructure, costs,
environment and safety. We are in dialogue with
stakeholders, including authorities, on the best approach,
and we put a lot of work into fully understanding the footprint
of wind energy, compared to gas, oil, nuclear and coal.'
Continuous efforts
'We are reducing the footprint of wind power, continuously
increasing the percentage of recyclability of our product,'
says Mr. Rnde: 'Furthermore, 100 percent of our own
electricity consumption is fully renewable.' Vestas has also
come far in reducing Lost Time Injury (LTI) and has expanded
this focus to contractors, with standardized work methods
and tools.
Social impact
Wind turbines impact their environment, and in some parts of
the world a social impact assessment is carried out. Ms.
Lilian Harbak, Sustainability Reporting Specialist at Vestas
explains: 'In emerging markets, without infrastructure, social
issues are more prevalent. So we assess to identify issues
which may occur, and may or may not be our responsibility,
but for which we feel we need to be prepared.'

Wind for Prosperity
Vestas wants to ensure using similar processes globally, and
to avoid that people, anywhere, are not being heard. Ms.
Harbak: 'In local communities in India and South-Africa, we
are organizing educational activities and we strive to give
rural areas access to energy in our Wind for Prosperity
program. We also replace gas turbines with old wind
turbines. Wind energy is clean compared to fossil fuels, and
we need more renewable energy, to be used for the good of
the earth.'

Energy saving laboratory for IFF

17
International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) has completely
rebuilt its creative and applications laboratory in Indonesia.
The new state-of-the-art facility incorporates advanced
sustainability principles including heat, water and emission
management systems, all according to LEED design. Tebodin
acted as design consultant from the conceptual stage to
detail engineering and construction management. Tebodin
and IFF worked together as one team with one goal: to
complete the project within budget, schedule and with 0 LTI which was achieved.
IFF strives to be part of the global initiative to save energy
and build in an eco-friendly manner. For this project, IFF
applied for a green building certification from LEED. This
basic certificate requires 40 to 49 credits. In the design
stage, focus was on controlling and reducing water and
energy usage, including maximizing daylight and using low
energy equipment. Special attention was paid to designing
for cooling in the tropical climate, and low-emitting materials
to keep out heat. Materials were sourced locally, instead of

imported, suitable for future recycling, and eco-friendly, such

as paints low in vapors.
Extra measures were in place during construction to control
pollution and waste, separate waste for recycling and re-use
materials as much as possible. The assessment for the
certification runs from the design stage to the
commissioning stage, which is currently nearly finished.

Green
chemistry
Utilising renewable materials and

Stimulating the economy

with biobased procurement

reusing (non-) renewable materials

is an important part of a circular
economy, and reduces CO2
emissions. Much is going on in
green chemistry, with major
companies. The EU and US actively
promote the development of
biobased products, combining both
the agricultural and chemical
sectors.
Manufactures are changing the
materials they use, and are looking
for renewable resources, trying not
to compete with food production.
Manufactures are struggling to
obtain recycled material in the right
amounts and quality. Process
equipment also needs to be adapted
18

to the mixed reuse sources.

Green chemistry is about innovation
and we address all the issues:
(re)designing plants to produce
biobased materials/products, master
studies for optimal locations and
logistics, and environmental Life
Cycle Analysis.

'If companies take corporate social responsibility seriously, they would do well by
looking at biobased procurement,' says Ms. Mariska van Dalen, Senior Consultant
Sustainability at Tebodin. 'Biobased procurement is relatively new and needs further
development. We have our first experiences. All companies reduce their
environmental impact and total cost of ownership.' By taking steps towards a
biobased economy. This is a by efficiency driven economy in using crops and
biomass for food, feed, chemicals, energy and fuels.
Innovative products
Procuring biobased products diminishes a company's CO2 footprint substantially.
Many parties are looking for usable base materials for a full quality end product.
Mariska van Dalen: All sorts of biobased products are being developed at present;
not only biobased paint, adhesives and solvents, but also bioplastics and biopackaging, biobased fertilizers and additives.
Still many questions remain, says Ms. Van Dalen: 'We need to focus more on the total
life cycle costs, but also the priority of food supply over building materials.
Aesthetical value is often brought up, and certification of these new materials is still
under development. However, we see this as a tremendous opportunity for inventive
people and companies. For example, the safety of a wood-based alternative to
asphalt, and fireproofing wood by scorching, with excellent results.'
Stimulus for industry
Toward 2014, the province of Zeeland, in the Netherlands, recognized biobased
production as a stimulus for industry in the region, and approached Tebodin to
develop a framework. Ms. Van Dalen: 'We created and tested a clear model for the
biobased procurement process. The province now conducts market research for
every procurement, looking at existing and new products. This starts a dialogue with
regular and new suppliers, stimulating the local economy, even by simply making
connections.'

Criteria for biobased products

For biobased products, Tebodin has selected five criteria, specific to
procurement. First, the percentage of organic material in the product. Second,
how product fits its function, such as durability, hygiene and fire safety. Third,
looking at the entire footprint, because some biobased products produce other
waste. On the other hand, some products produce extra value for the user,
lower maintenance costs or residual value. And finally, a look at the waste
phase: whether materials
can be reused or are easily biodegradable. Not all

A trust-based network
that speeds up innovation
WE MAKE IT EASIER TO INVEST TIME AND MONEY IN PROCESS TECHNOLOGY, SAYS TJEERD JONGSMA, DIRECTOR OF
THE INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABLE PROCESS TECHNOLOGY (ISPT). INVESTING IN PRODUCTS OFTEN TAKES PRECEDENCE
OVER PROCESS INNOVATION, AS THE RESULTS ARE MORE IMMEDIATE. HOWEVER, BY THE SHEER SIZE OF THE PROCESS
INDUSTRY, SMALL CHANGES WILL MEAN A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE.
Sharing benefits and reducing risk
Trust and collaboration are the keywords in the network
that is united in ISPT. Within this network, partners from the
processing industry, universities and knowledge institutes
work together towards a common goal: improving
technology to save energy and resources. Tjeerd Jongsma:
Participants in our projects cover the entire scope from
small and medium-sized companies to multinational
corporations and internationally renowned universities, and
their involvement can be anything from concept
development to implementation of new technology. All
partners benefit from the shared efforts. Moreover the
individual risks of investment are minimized.
Towards a sustainable economy
ISPT and its many partners play their part in achieving goals
as set by the industry, the national government and the EU,
continued Mr. Jongsma. By playing our part in the transition
towards sustainable energy we aim to save a minimum of
two percent. By enabling more efficient use of resources we
want to contribute to a more sustainable, circular economy.
A third theme in our activities is promoting biobased
technology: maximizing the potential of biological resources
in for instance food production and energy generation.
Innovations and improvements
A major development we see in process technology at the
moment, says Tjeerd Jongsma, is the transition from
thermal to electric processes. Heat, and more particularly,
steam, plays a major role in the technology used to convert
resources into food and many other products. New and
innovative process technologies are often driven by
electricity instead. This makes it possible to use energy that
is generated in an eco-friendly manner, such as wind or
solar energy. By making processes more modular, the
industry is better equipped to handle possible fluctuations in
the availability of electricity.
Energy savings of two per cent may seem relatively small,
but in a large industry it amounts to a significant number of
kilowatts. Besides, we are also seeing innovations in the
application of more traditional technologies. For instance, a
recent project involved the recovery of residual heat and
upgrading it to process heat quality.

19

Tjeerd Jungsma, director of ISPT

'A small change in a

large industry can
save a lot of energy
and resources'
Fruitful collaboration
Over the past few years, ISPT has initiated and enabled
several dozen projects resulting in scientific publications as
well as in the development and implementation of innovative
processes. Tjeerd Jongsma: To bring together business,
universities and knowledge institutes, we have the support
of the Dutch government we work within the framework of
Key Sectors and innovation contracts that underline their
commitment and of our many, many partners, including
companies like Tebodin. In several of our projects, they have
facilitated the installation of trust between parties in their
and our networks all for the sake of fruitful collaboration.

Bioprocess Pilot Facility for upscaling

biobased alternatives

21

The Bioprocess Pilot Facility (BPF) in Delft, offers a modern

state-of-the-art, versatile, open access pilot plant facility
which is capable of meeting the demands of innovators in
the biobased economy, enabling them to achieve success.
BPFs capabilities allow the pilot facility to offer a unique set
of services, from feedstock treatment and process
optimization, through to the development and testing of
robust processes at scale. The pilot plant provides test time
to companies, universities, and knowledge institutes from all
over the world, who are looking for biobased alternatives for
products currently based on oil and gas. In this unique
multipurpose facility, they can investigate how production
processes developed at laboratory scale respond to largescale conditions and how they can best be scaled up for
production purposes, using BPFs special set of equipment
and expertise.
Tebodin took on the detailed design, procurement and
construction management of the extension of the pilot plant.
Tebodin Project Manager Mr. Theo Buters: 'The contract
was for equipment, electrical, instrumentation, piping and
utilities. But we have also re-done the basic engineering. In
addition to our scope we provided construction management
for the building upgrade.'
With the completion of the extension project, a unique pilotand demonstration plant has been completed, to enable

mimicking of: integrated processing, production of chemical

building blocks, value-added materials, and food products,
including disintegration of biomass into sugars and lignin.
The extension entails a new pre-treatment section to
process biomass residues (e.g. woodchips, straw, corn
Stover etc.) on both pilot- and bench scale, and a section
dedicated to food applications. It also entails an education
laboratory equipped with fermentation and downstream
processing facilities of a relevant size. Over and above the
existing fermentation and downstream processing
capabilities, BPF will be of key importance to companies
(small and large) looking to upscale from laboratory and pilot
plant to full-blown industrial production.

hydrogen fuel

We identify innovations in existing

companies and speak to start-ups
with good ideas, for purifying and
reusing water, improved recycling,
and energy efficiency in plants. They
are proven techniques to prevent
pollution, reduce emissions into
water, air, and soil, and save cost.
In practice, many companies take
some prevention measures but are
often reluctant to implement new
technologies. We have also
observed that companies do not
want to halt production, and stops
are usually the ideal moment to
implement innovations.

In cooperation with several

universities, suppliers, and
symposia, we stay up-to-date with
current developments. We are
always looking for pilot projects

In September 2014, Air Liquide officially opened one of the first public hydrogen
fueling stations in the Netherlands. Air Liquide is the world's second largest supplier
of industrial gases. The innovative and sustainable fueling station was developed in
partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment, and Tebodin
was responsible for civil, structural and infrastructural engineering and provided
consultancy and construction management services. The station is directly
connected to Air Liquide's North West European hydrogen pipeline network and will
provide hydrogen for city buses and hydrogen cars in the greater Rotterdam area.

where we can try out new

technologies, and put them to good
use for our clients. For issues such
as energy isolation, amortization is
rapid.

The city of Rotterdam is an early adopter of sustainable mobility, stimulating the use
of electrical cars, bicycles, public transport and hydrogen fuel. To keep down
emissions in the busy city center and vast harbor area, Rotterdam actively seeks
cooperation with car manufacturers and the gas industry. Hydrogen fuel is an
attractive option, as a zero-emission fuel, but not much used for passenger vehicles
yet. The first experiences with the Rotterdam hydrogen station are positive. Within
half a year of the opening, the number of vehicles tanking hydrogen increased fivefold. Furthermore, towards 2016, a local bus company will start tanking hydrogen for
their buses.
More fueling stations are expected in future: the National Hydrogen Platform is
paving the road for more hydrogen stations, in close communication with the
European Union and the commercial sector. The national government of the
Netherlands also invests in green fuel, and expects to have about 20 hydrogen
stations in use around the country in 2020.

Desso, a frontrunner on the road

to a circular economy
'WE SPEND 90 PERCENT OF OUR TIME INDOORS. OUR COMPANY VISION IS TO MAKE THE FLOOR WORK FOR OUR HEALTH AND
WELL-BEING, SAYS MR. ROLAND JONKHOFF, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF DESSO. DESSO IS A LEADING CARPET AND SPORT
PITCHES COMPANY, ACTIVE IN OVER 100 COUNTRIES, AND PART OF THE TARKETT GROUP. DESSO AND TARKETT ARE COMMITTED
TO THE TRANSITION TO THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY, AND ARE WELL ON THE ROAD, INSPIRING OTHERS TO DO THE SAME.
C2C basis
Mr. Jonkhoff: We are delighted to see more and more
interest in the circular economy model as a positive way
forward for business and society. We believe that, on a
crowded planet, our resource efficient approach lays the
basis for sustainable business. We have followed the
circular economy Cradle to Cradle concept since 2008,
aiming to make all products according to its principles in
2020. Making this happen involves a major change program
across all corporate departments, from design to production,
to marketing and sales.
We are five years into that comprehensive program now to
change our business model. It links directly to our core
vision: to deliver products that improve peoples health and
well-being that also have a positive impact on the
environment.'

23

Product milestones
One of the milestones on this road so far was the
achievement of C2C Silver certification for the Desso
EcoBase polyolefin backing, in 2010, which is 100 percent
positively defined and is totally recyclable within Dessos
production systems.
Also, with its Take Back and Refinity material separation
technology, Desso has been able to begin taking back postconsumer carpet wastes. Some of the recycled yarn goes
back to its supplier, who has developed a depolymerisation
plant to turn old yarn into a new yarn of 100% regenerated
nylon, known as ECONYL. Today, 50 percent of Dessos
carpet tile range is available with ECONYL.
Other milestones include C2C certifying 90 percent of
Dessos commercial carpet tiles, and developing health and
well-being product innovations, such as the DESSO
AirMaster, designed to improve indoor air quality through
reducing particulate matter in the atmosphere. Furthermore,
Desso developed a new C2C material stream of calcium
carbonate from residues from the water industry.

Visionary roadshow
Ms. Anette Timmer, Corporate Communications and CSR
Director says: 'To meet our ambitious targets, we seek
strong business relationships with suppliers who share our
vision, are dedicated to improve their products and
operations towards environmental and social excellence,
and promote the same values actively among those with
whom they do business.'

Top 100 Pioneer

With all these achievements, Desso is one of the pioneers in
this field, and member of the Circular Economy 100 network,
organized by the Ellen McArthur Foundation. Desso has been
at the centre of cross-industry collaborative discussions and
project work on scaling up the circular economy, organized
by the World Economic Forum and known as Project
MainStream.

Again, to set a positive example, Desso literally takes its

approach on the road, together with Ahrend, Mosa and
Tebodin. In the Cradle to Cradle Roadshow, these
companies share their experiences, to inspire other
companies to take the road towards a global circular
economy. 'Because', says Ms. Timmer: 'we believe that
business, sustainability and commercial success in the long
run are one and the same.'

Reusing heat recovery steam at

PDO combined power plant
To secure a reliable and robust source of power, Petroleum
Development Oman (PDO) intended to set up a combined
cycle gas turbine power plant at Lekhwair, in the north of
Oman. In a combined cycle operation, waste heat and flue
gas are reused to drive the generators, improving overall
efficiency and reducing fuel costs.
PDO has initiated a number of projects to enhance gas
production from Omani fields to meet the increased demand
for gas, both in the local and international markets. The
number of loads has gone up, but the existing gas turbine
generators cannot meet the total load requirement in the
area. In addition, the central processing plant at Lekhwair
requests depletion compression, creating a further need for
additional power.
In a combined cycle gas turbine, hot flue gas is passed
through a heat recovery steam generator, where waste heat

from the flue gas is used to generate steam to drive a

condensing steam turbine. Condensed water from the aircooled condenser is pumped out, collected in a tank and
sent back to the boiler. Tebodin took on the Front End
Engineering Design (FEED) study for the combined cycle
turbine at Lekhwair. Raghavendra Kantheti, sr. Project
Engineer: We prepared tender documents for the combined
cycle package including balance of the plant and EPC
documents to prepare budgetary estimation. We supported
in technical bid evaluation of EPC and vendor packages.
These FEED deliverables form the basis for the detailed
design.
The plant is set up modular and will initially have one gas
turbine, the heat recovery steam generator, and the steam
turbine. The steam and gas turbines are each connected to
separate generators, both feeding the grid via a new
substation.

AND KIMBERLEY-CLARK. THE COMPANY IS CURRENTLY FOCUSED ON THE SOUTH GATE INDUSTRIAL PARK NEAR
MOSCOW, ACHIEVING RECORD-BREAKING SCORES FOR SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS.
Highest ever rating
In 2012, Radius Group became the first real estate developer
in Russia to be awarded with a BREEAM certification for two
warehouses. In 2013, a third BREEAM certificate was
awarded for a combined manufacturing and distribution
center for Hartmann Group. Constructed to German
manufacturing standards, with technical support from
Tebodin, the facility achieved a 58.36% BREEAM rating - at
that time the highest ever awarded to a commercial real

Doing BREEAM
'There is green labelling and doing green,' says Mr. David
Simons, Managing Director of development and construction
departments: 'When we first designed for John Deere in
2006, no one in the sector thought about sustainability. The
building was not designed for BREEAM.' But Radius must
have done something right: 'When we completed it in 2009,
we got a pass rating and it was certified in 2012. Today, we
hold 75 percent of warehouses under BREEAM assessment
in Russia, and a full 100 percent of BREEAM certificates.
Every building at South Gate is BREEAM certified.'

David Simons of Radius Group

Long-term investment
Radius Group is investing in sustainable business. Mr.
Simons: 'We are very aware of our impact on people and on
the environment, during construction and use. We invest
around 4 percent more in our buildings than our competition.
We are paying for CAPEX and the client receives benefits in

and serve their needs for decades. Our warehouses last for
over thirty years. Our company values say it best: integrity,
partnership, and can-do.'
Slow shift
Radius' green spirit, combined with 100 percent compliance,
had led to a high market share and clients having faith to
sign with Radius in turbulent times. Mr. Simons:
'Sustainability really starts to show over time, in quality and
life of building. For example, our buildings have the proven

in the latest technologies, with an eye on reducing costs.
Slowly, government and clients are becoming more aware.
In 2011, BREEAM was seen as a marketing thing, now it is
recognized for what it is. We want to create a wider
awareness, to get a larger playing field, to spread the word
and lead by example. At some point, I would like to sit back
and see that Radius was a quiet but strong force in bringing
it here.'

Amsterdam city swim for ALS

On September 7, around 2,000 people swam for
a good cause in the Amsterdam canals, to
make people aware of ALS (Amyotrophic
Lateral Sclerosis). Besides creating
awareness, the event is aimed to raise money
to finance scientific research for the cause

and treatment of this deadly disease. Tebodin

participated in this event, swimming 2 km
through the famous canals. The team swam
very well with so many enthusiastic supporters
and raised a considerable amount of money for
the ALS Foundation.

Central
Europe

32

In Central Europe, CSR focuses mainly

on community involvement, health and
safety and climate change.
Our clients are more and more
interested in sustainable buildings,
energy audits, renewable energy, and
efficiency programs (materials, water
and energy) especially targeting
employees.
Companies in Poland have started to see
opportunities for being environmentally
friendly in every field of their day-to-day
business and embedding CSR.
In Romania legislation for waste
management has been implemented.
The government in Poland promotes
CSR through Clean Production
communities, green public procurement
and encouraging the sustainable
development of the power sector.
Renewables are also stimulated in other
areas in Central Europe due to subsidy
schemes.
Sustainable solutions in industrial and
commercial buildings are also driven by
LEED and BREEAM certification
systems. LEED is more common with
industrial projects, while BREEAM is
more common with commercial
buildings.

Tree-planting for team-building

'We had a great day out, enjoying the fresh air
and doing something that will have a long
lasting and positive impact on the
environment.' The 400 trees planted are meant
to compensate the office's CO2 emissions
resulting from travel, power consumption, and
gas consumption.

In May, staff from Tebodins office Bucharest,

Romania, planted 400 trees around the town of
Sinaia. Out of 70 employees, 59 were able to
participate in the event. Besides the
environmental impact, the event also proved to
be a good opportunity for teambuilding and
expanding creativity. The project was initiated
by Financial Controller Ms. Catalina Dogeanu:

Tebodin Good Angel

in Czech Republic
Tebodin in the Czech
Republic became a
Good Angel by
supporting the
Dobr Andl (good
angel) Foundation.
The aim of Dobr
Andl is to provide
families, in which a
member has come down with a serious illness,
with regular monthly financial assistance in

the amount of several thousand Czech crowns.

Donors, or Good Angels, make it possible to
increase the monthly income of families with
children, facing financial distress due to
serious illness. Each Good Angel has their own
Angel ID and password, to check the current
amount of donations that has been made, as
well as the life stories of the people to whom
Dobr Andl has delivered the given donors
donations. Tebodin is considering a further
structural contribution to this foundation.

Romanians donate to charity

The Romanian government has a system in
place which allows that part of the tax can be
redirected to an organization working for the
benefit of all, like orphan, homeless people,
and disabled people.

Every year, Tebodin employees in Romania

donate 2% of their annual salary income tax to
several non-profit organizations or foundations.

employees are SMURD - the emergency

Book exchange
among Polish
employees
As the nights began to lengthen in
autumn, the Warsaw office
initiated a book exchange to share
interest and inspire colleagues to
reading, called Wymienialnia

Employees were invited to share
their literature, in any subject and language,
whether novels or academic and technical
literature. It was a nice way not only to share
technical resources, but also to integrate and
share interest in books and reading. A special
library area was created were everyone
could bring and find books.

Hungarians take
environmental
actions
In Hungary,
Tebodin is a strong
believer that
environmental
awareness is a
learned practice. A
campaign to raise
the awareness
among employees
was offering
environmentally
friendly office solutions on how to use less
paper, consume less energy and on wasting
water. For this reason, posters were placed
near printers and in office rooms to remind
them to print double sided or use other options
for printing with less paper. On every monitor
and laptop, there was a small sticker Do not
forget to turn off, when you are leaving! In the
kitchen and in the toilets stickers reminded to
think about before wasting water.

Eastern
Europe
CSR is related to labor practices
(employee development, workplace
safety), consumer health and safety. The
region has the largest manufacturers of
metallurgical products and a growing IT
sector. An environmental concern is
poor water quality, as the region
depends for its drinking water mainly on
surface water.
Our clients have energy-intensive assets
and aim for energy efficiency and
renewable energy.
Integrated environmental management
and eco-networks are being introduced
by the government as environmental
awareness is low.
The government has defined an energy
strategy up to 2030 and environmental
legislation is in the pipeline.
Active networks of companies, World
Bank and other international
organizations support energy reduction
projects.

As health is one of the most precious things in
our lives Tebodin in Ukraine decided to make a
donation to Service medical clinical center of
western region (hospital) in Lviv. The medical
center received the financial aid needed for the
treatment of patients. Tebodin plans to continue
the donations of financial aid and technical

St.Nicholas gifts for children

in Dobre Sertse
Saint Nicholas Day is a holiday when miracles
and good deeds happen. It is a special time for
children and, therefore, the Tebodin team in
Ukraine decided to create a joyful atmosphere
for children in orphanage Dobre Sertse.
Social responsibility is one of the main
priorities in the activity of Tebodin.

Children in Dobre sertse orphanage, which is

situated in the Novyi Myliatyn village, Lviv
region, received some sweet treats and other
gifts that come in handy. We believe that
everybody enjoyed such initiative and that it is
a good opportunity to bring hope into the
hearts of the children.

Paper recycling
and utilization
of hazardous
waste
In Russia there is no segregation of waste, and
there are only few points which accept
hazardous wastes for their further utilization.
That is why colleagues from Moscow office
decided to collect batteries centrally and
deliver them for recycling.
Along with this all, computer wastes were
given to the specialized organization for
recycling. Tebodin allocated budget for this
purpose.
There was also a focus on paper recycling
issues. One of the examples is the contract
signing between Rostov-on-Don office and
OSG Records Management in June 2014. OSG
Records Management is a leading provider of
document storage and paper recycling
operating in the CIS and the EU.
OSG Records Management provides the office
for services on secure information destruction.
The documents are ecologically recycled.

Economic growth has slowed down in

China which has resulted in fewer
greenfield projects and more brownfield
projects with more stringent budgeting
and higher expectations from clients
towards lean design and sustainable
operations. In this environment are
numerous clients are setting up the next
phase of their development, upgrading
their facilities and identify areas of value
creation.
In South East Asia, we notice that
certain markets like Malaysia, Thailand
and Singapore are looking for
modernization of existing assets and are
increasingly concerned about energy
efficiency. Tebodin is setting up an
Energy Efficiency work group that
assists clients in auditing an energy
situation, identifying areas of
optimization and recommending a more

Tebodin continues supporting numerous
environmental impact studies.
In Asia Pacific, Tebodin has identified
the following services: lean design,
value engineering, energy efficiency,
environmental impact, as being
increasingly important to facility owners.

Support program for students

In 2010, Tebodin in China started a support program
financing the education of two students through the
Sunrise Organization. In 2014, Tebodin attended the
donation ceremony held by Sunrise during which a
presentation was given by Tebodins HR manager
about the career plan of both students. The
students were very glad with Tebodins financial
support. Besides the financial support, Tebodin also
took care for their daily (school) lives. Both students
were invited to the company activities and were
well received with open hearth by all Tebodin
employees. A close friendship has been set up
between Tebodin and the students. As of 2013,
another support program with a local student has
been started. This program has been organized by
Yu Garden Neighborhood Committee. Yu Garden is
the area where Shanghai office is located.

Our ambitions:
leader in circular production design
TEBODIN STRIVES TO BE RECOGNIZED BY ITS KEY STAKEHOLDERS AS A FORWARD-LOOKING COMPANY THAT
UNDERSTANDS ITS ROLE IN MOVING TOWARDS CIRCULAR PRODUCTION PROCESSES THEREBY CREATING A BETTER
FUTURE FOR THE NEXT GENERATIONS.
Why? Limits to the linear model
To support our clients with innovative business models and
technologies, so as to make their production future-proof.
Linear production models are no longer viable due to the
non-renewable resources and the limits to the regenerative
capacity of our planet.
Our role: Pro-active to exceed clients needs
Design for circular production is integrated into our business
strategy. We pro-actively show our clients the operational
benefits of circular production processes and the innovative
steps to get there.
Our clients have the in-depth knowledge of their own
production process and products, while Tebodin has the
knowledge regarding how to integrate new (innovative)
technologies. Together with our clients, suppliers, and local
authorities, we can redesign the industry towards a circular

production. Working across different industries gives us the

opportunity to connect different sectors.
How do we do it? Think global and act local
Our sustainability consultants and business developers start
the dialogue with stakeholders at a global level. This
establishes a general circular business value model with
strategies and roadmaps for our clients production facilities.
At local level, our clients and project managers select
innovations from the circular value model that are feasible
within the timeframe and budget of a specific project.
Practical implementation of the selected innovation will be
discussed on a frequent basis.
For each project, the project team calculates the value to
make the innovation visible for all stakeholders involved.
Finally, we secure the knowledge we gained in the redesign
value tool and actively share it throughout our network.

New initiatives and developments

Socially responsible design

For a new shopping mall in Donetsk, Ukraine,

the thermal comfort modeling was performed
via close collaboration between offices in
Kiev and The Hague, as part of the BREEM
certification. The aim of this project was to
ensure that appropriate thermal comfort
levels are achieved for the occupied spaces
using the PMV (predicted mean value of the
votes of a large group of persons based on
heat balance of the human body) and PPD

(predicted percentages of dissatisfied people

who feel too cool or too warm) in accordance
with EN.
Thermal modeling performed with the special
program tools (simulation model), based on
the local climate parameters, is used to guide
design decisions that influence thermal
comfort levels, such as: building form and
orientation, layouts, effect of overshading
trees and solar heat, balancing the
maximization of daylight for reduced lighting
energy use against increased cooling loads
and thermal comfort levels, and checking the
overheating risk.
This case, as far as possible, meets the
purpose of sustainability, when economic,
social, and environmental components are
inseparably linked into the different
parts/divisions of the design.

KISS skid NEXT

De KISS Skid is a compact and mobile
production unit, developed to operate small
gas fields. This modular and transportable
functional unit offers various advantages. For
example, the construction and skid
production locations can be separated,
resulting in less construction hours on
potentially unsafe or extreme locations, and
regarding maintenance: just replace the unit
and maintain it off-site.
After the development of the first standard
model in 2008, Tebodin started with the
development of the KISS Skid NEXT in 2013;

much smaller and more compact than the

standard model. New technologies are
applied like a plug & play connector and a
wireless connection with the control room.
The first KISS skid NEXT has been put into
use in 2014. Four more skids are in production
and a new order for eight more identical skids
has been placed.
Based on the gained knowledge, Tebodin
participates in a modular production unit
study together with DSM and University of
Delft. This study is initiated by ISPT (Institute
for Sustainable Process Technology).

Ensure
sustainable
building design
There is a growing awareness in sustainable
development of the building sector in Vietnam.
In order to meet the demand, Tebodins
Engineering Center in Ho Chi Minh City started
the Green Building Services department to
provide sustainable building design
consultancy and advocate for green building
throughout South East Asia. This specialized
department assists its engineering teams to
incorporate sustainable designing from the
beginning to the completion of the project to
ensure an effortless design-to-construction
process. For 2014, the dynamic, flexible, and
client-oriented team has worked diligently to
ensure sustainable building designing for
International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) and
Coca-Cola Vietnam in order to obtain
certification under the LEED benchmark.

Building simulation for

optimal energy performance

Tebodins office in Vietnam applies more and

more building simulation to determine the
energy performance of the building before
realizing the building. Full building simulation
enables the designer to have insight into the
building performance during the design phase
and to test the building on several design
cases. The main goal of the building
simulation is to propose the most energy
efficient solution to reduce environmental and
economic impact that are associated with
excessive energy use.
The amount of energy consumed by the

facilities is confirmed via building simulation

where a 3-dimensional model of the building
is constructed and placed in a virtual
environment that corresponds with the local
environmently of the buildings location. The
simulations will examine sun angle during
different times of the day, year, and seasons
for one operational year of the building and
compare it with a baseline building where
conventional technologies and design is used
to calculate energy efficiency. On two
projects for Coca-Cola and IFF - building
simulation has been successfully applied.

Sunflower hull boiler units

In Russia, Tebodin uses solid-fuel boiler units

in its projects. A favorite solid fuel is
sunflower hulls, one of the by-products of the
preparation of sunflower seeds for
consumption. Sunflower hulls have a high
heating value, similar to wood, but are much
less expensive and readily available. They do
need a quality boiler and require a precise
airflow; with a high surface area, they need a

low airflow to prevent overheating, but

enough to prevent smoking. However,
sunflower hulls smoke much less than other
bio-fuels such as seeds, straw and stalks, and
have a low ash rate. The light and loose ash is
cleaned off with a soot blower. These boiler
houses minimize the impact on the
environment and dependence on fluctuating
(fossil fuel) prices.

BioPort
Challenge
Rotterdam
Tebodin has participated in the Rotterdam
BioPort Challenge, which is a competition by
and for young professionals in the Rotterdam
Port industry to create business plans for a
bio-based industry cluster. The Challenge was
an initiative of Port of Rotterdam in
cooperation with some companies. During the
grand finale, three nominated teams
presented their business plans. A solution for
large-scale extracting sugars from second
generation biomass was selected as the
winning team by a panel of CEOs from the
port, banking and science. Three Tebodin
employees participated in three teams: It was
inspiring to think about clean, green and
profitable business opportunities with
likeminded people from various industries.
Finally, an everlasting network of people that
want to promote the bio-based economy has
been created.

Business
breakfasts
In Czech Republic, Tebodin organized
breakfast meetings with clients on a regular
base to discuss business related key topics. In
2014 Energy savings and HSE as DNA of the
project approach were some topics of the
breakfast meetings. Experience from projects,
lessons learned, latest updates of legislation
and project procedures were discussed.
Clients mainly from automotive, food, pharma,
oil and gas, chemicals and commercial
buildings markets participated in the
meetings.
These breakfasts are an effective way to
share opinions, knowledge and experience,
and to come together to the best solutions.
