Detailed Lesson Plan in Science for Grade VIII

Prepared By: Raslia P. Ronda

I.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the lesson, the Grade VIII students will be able to:
a. Identify the plants belong to Gymnosperms.
b. Discuss the characteristics of 4 divisions belong to Gymnosperms.
c. Appreciate the economic importance of some plants in Gymnosperms.

D. Science Ideas:
a. Gymnosperms are plants that have seeds but no flowers. They referred
to as naked seed. The seeds of these plants are on cones or in cups.
Most gymnosperms are evergreen.
b. The 4 phyla of gymnosperms are cycadophyta, gnetophyta,
ginkgophyta, and coniferata.

Learning Strategies

Teachers Activity
A. Pre-assessment

Students Activity

1. Prayer
Everybody, please stand for the

(The students will stand and pray)

prayer.
Take your seats.

(The students will sit down)

2. Greetings
Good afternoon class!
How are you doing?

Good Afternoon Maam Ras!

Were doing fine Maam.

3. Checking of Attendance
Im glad to hear that. Who are absent
today?

Nobody is absent today!

Very good!
4. Recapitulation
What was our topic yesterday?

Our topic yesterday was Nonvascular

plants.

Yes. What is nonvascular plant?

Nonvascular plants dont contain tissues

to transport water and nutrients throughout
the body of plants.

Very good! Give the three divisions of

nonvascular plants.

The three divisions of nonvascular plants

are bryophyta, hepatophyta, and
anthocerophyta.

Thats right!
5. Motivation
(The teacher will show picture of cycads.)
What can you observed from the picture
presented?
Thats right! Cycads have cone-like in the
center. That cone is the seed of cycads.

I observed that the plants have cone-like

in the center and its leaves resembles the
palm leaves.

Overview:
What are Gymnosperms?

Gymnosperms are seed-bearing vascular

plants in which the seeds are not enclosed

in an ovary.
Very good! Gymnosperms are referred to
as naked seeds. They do not produce
flowers. What are the four divisions of
Gymnosperms?

The four divisions of gymnosperms are

cycadophyta, ginkgophyta, gnetophyta,
and coniferata.

Thats right!
Pre-Lab Activity:
(The teacher will show different plants of
Gymnosperms. The students will identify
the plants if its Cycadophyta, Gnetophyta,
Ginkgophyta, and Coniferata.)

(The students will perform the activity)

Laboratory Proper:
Post-Lab Activity:
Although classified as a single group,
gymnosperm plants are actually comprised
of four different phyla. What are the
characteristics of cycadophyta?
Thats right! They have a distinct trunk
with a few functional leaves atop. They are
often mistaken for palms. And have large,
compound leaves. One of the examples of
cycadophyta is the cycads. Cycads bear
large cones. What are the characteristics of
ginkgophyta?
Yes. The only living member of the
phylum Ginkgophyta is the Maidenhair
tree, better known as Ginkgo biloba. It has
fan-shaped leaves, unique among seed
plants because they feature a dichotomous

Cycadophyta are characterized by a large

crown of leaves and a stout, thick trunk.

Ginkgophyta are characterized for their

leaf which is fan-shaped.

Coniferophyta are characterized as the

venation pattern, turn yellow in autumn

and fall from the tree. Its leaves will turn
yellow and fall off during the winter
months. What are the characteristics of
coniferata?
Very good! Conifers are the dominant
phylum of gymnosperms, with the most
variety of species. They are typically tall
trees that usually bear scale-like or needlelike leaves. Conifers include familiar
evergreen trees such as pines, spruces, firs,
cedars, sequoias, and yews. A few species
are deciduous, losing their leaves in fall.
The last division is the Gnetophyta. What
are the 3 genera of gnetophyta?
Very good! Gnetophytes are the closest
relative to modern angiosperms and
include three dissimilar genera of plants:
Ephedra, Gnetum, and Welwitschia. Like
angiosperms, they have broad leaves.
Gnetophytes are vines or small shrubs.
Have you seen a Welwitschia?

tallest vascular plants. They also have

needle-like leaves.

The 3 genera of gnetophyta are

Welwitschia, Ephedra, and Gnetum.

No Maam.

Ephedra has small, scale-like leaves.

The stem of Welwitschia is shaped like a

large, shallow cup that tapers into a taproot
below the surface. It has two strap-shaped,
leathery leaves that grow continuously
from their base, splitting as they flap in the
wind. What are the characteristics of
Ephedra?
Yes. Ephedra's small, scale-like leaves are
the source of the compound ephedrine,
which is used in medicine as a potent
decongestant. Because ephedrine is similar
to amphetamines, both in chemical
structure and neurological effects, its use is
restricted to prescription drugs. The last
genera is the Gnetum.

The seeds of Ginkgo biloba are usually

used for food; they can be roasted or put
into a soup.

What is the economic importance of

Ginkgo biloba?

Conifers are used in timber and paper

production.

Thats right! The wood is sometimes used

for religious furniture. The wood from the
female tree can be made into paper. The
leaves and "nuts" are used for medicine all
over the world. This medicine has been
used to treat asthma, coughs, bronchitis,
digestive aid and urinary incontinence.
What about the conifers?
Yes. Gymnosperms provide the entire
world's softwood timber, the major
construction wood of temperate regions,
and about 45 percent of the world's annual
lumber production.
6. Generalization
What have you learned from our topic
today?

Thats right!
IV.

place a plant which produce seeds but
lacks flowers.
a) Bryophytes c) Pteridophytes
b) Fungi
d) Gymnosperms
2. All are not characteristics of Gymnosperms

I have learned that the gymnosperms are

very important because they are widely
used in construction, furniture-building,
paper-making and urban planning, as well
as providing important solvents for
industrial and home use, cleaning agents,
and food.

EXCEPT,
