Thai Night
By Andrew Price

The Thai community of Newman held its

biannual sensational fundraising night
on 23 May, donating all profits totalling a
massive $11,000 to Newman Senior High
School after the devastating fire late last
year.
A sell-out night was attended by 300 people
in the Rec. Centre on a cold and stormy
night. Inside was decorated all Thai, flowing
silk flags, traditional umbrellas, banana and
sugar cane trees, not forgetting the popular
Lucky Tree.
A relaxed, exciting, fun, spicy and
entertaining night was packed with
everyone enjoying a cultural evening of
Thai food, dancing, raffle, photo booth and
fun activities.

Dance performances ranged in styles from

all around Thailand, starting with the girls
from the High School dressed in pastel silk
dresses. Then followed ladies in black and
gold, followed by more amazing dresses
and dances. The children farang and Thai
all joined for a united entertaining dance.
MC and music was by Tiriki Henare, and
Eddy Blondel did a fantastic job. A special
thank you to the Thai community and their
families for their assistance and hard work
for the event.

Thanks also to the Shire of East Pilbara,

Newman Senior High School P&C,
Newman Motocross and all who helped
on the evening to make it a great success,
including all guests who purchased tickets.
Thank you Newman for being such a great
community in which to live.

The night started off with a warm Thai

delicious spring rolls, curry puffs and fish
cakes.

June saw the Shire experience the loss of

Councillor Kevin Danks. In 1988, Kevin first
became a Councillor and served the council
for 21 years. He was a strong advocate for
improvement of the roads in and out of
Marble Bar. He was also an avid volunteer
in community organisations. Thoughts go
out to Helen and his children.

and safety of people who may have used

the park. The Shire reports that, this year
we have had 4 CCTV cameras vandalized
at a cost of up to $20,000 each. While
the Shire and the Police are making great
efforts to protect people and property,
there are limitations and individuals need
to be held accountable. The Shire of East
Pilbara is offering a $1,000 reward for
information that leads to the conviction of
perpetrators of vandalism against public
property. Report any suspicious behaviour
to Newman Police on 9175 4000.

Crime Rates Dropped

Despite incidents like the above-mentioned

vandalism, Police report that as of 15
June 2015, the Newman community has
experienced a reduction of over 24% in
reported crime compared with the same
period last year. This incorporates Burglary
being down 27% and Theft down 30%.
Despite pleasing results, we are reminded
(yet again) that people are still leaving keys
in vehicles making them a soft target for
offenders.

Snow in Newman

NSHS students presented a fabulous

performance over two nights in June under
the guidance of Performing Arts teacher,
Miss Bragaglia. Students performances
encompassed many genre such as dance,
singing and musical instruments; all winter
themed. They also utilised their skills in all
aspects of staging. The show was produced
by students in Years 9 and 10 whilst being
performed by students Years 7 to 12. Well
done to all involved.
NSHS also ran a disco for school aged
children at staggered times for the various
age groups. This was a great success and
fun for so many.

Newman Movie Series 2015

and the Shire of East Pilbara.

Onishi to Interpret the Pilbara

By Sonya Matheson

Japanese installation artist Yasuaki

Onishi has been nominated winner of
the 2015 Art at the Heart artist-inresidence programme, over more than 300
expressions of interest. Perhaps oddly, 32
submissions were by artists from the Perth
suburb of Hamilton Hill.
For six weeks between late July and early
September, the Osaka-based artist will
engage with East Pilbara communities and
work on his own creative practice. The
residency includes accommodation, vehicle
hire, a commission budget of $40,000 and
prize of $15,000; an extremely generous
prize by Australian standards.
This residency was offered for the first
time last year to Australian artist, Hannah
Quinlivan.

Yasuaki Onishi is known for his use of

simple materials including rope, plastic
sheets, wire, glue guns and, perhaps less
simple, urea.
He has spent much time undertaking such
residencies around the world including
India, Sweden, Portugal and USA.
His previous installations explore natures
features including mountains, glacier caves
and oceans.
I create sculpture that visualises negative
space, which is typically referred to as
blank margin or hollow space, he said.
With such a beautiful natural environment
that we live in, it is hoped that it will inspire
Onishis work for all to enjoy.

Pilbara Photography
Groups Competition
By Bianca Woolhouse, Avant Garde Studio

This years Pilbara Photography Groups

competition and exhibition will showcase
some of the regions talented photographers
and our beautiful environment.
This year there are amateur, professional
and a childrens category. The photographs
will be on display at the Newman Visitor
Centre between 24 August and 25
September which will be open to view
and vote for the Peoples Choice award.
There will be 12 winners of the Peoples
Choice award whose photos will be shared
in a 2016 calendar created and sold by the
Newman Visitor Centre.
Last years winners include:
Amateur: Leeanne Murphy
Professional: Bianca Woolhouse
Peoples Choice: Peta Hooper
The winners of each category will be
announced on the exhibitions closing
night 24 September. There are great prizes
across all the categories and if they are not
sold, the photographer will have a beautiful
print of their photograph at the end of
the exhibition. For many photographers,
this is their first experience in entering a
competition or of seeing their photos in
print.

East Pilbara Art Centre

By Sonya Matheson

With the Martumili Artists growing success

and obvious need for space, and with the
communitys desire for greater cultural
opportunities, the East Pilbara Art Centre
was conceived. EPAC is near completion
and is opening this month.
EPAC will include an exhibition space and
gallery with a variety of function spaces.
These come with supporting utility areas
including kitchens, laundry, storage and
the like. The Martumili Artists will have
their own substantially larger studio space
compared with their current location. It will
include indoor and outdoor work areas, a

water tank to keep the deck cool, storage

for camping gear, an outside fire pit and
residence for a caretaker.
Having watched the large shed-like
structure being developed, many people
are looking forward to seeing its final
appearance inside and out. The official
opening will afford that opportunity on
Friday 24 July.

This years competition and exhibition

is being coordinated by four local
photographers: Bianca Woolhouse (Avant
Garde Studio), Sarah Stampfli (Serene
Bedlam Photography), Monique Manson
(Capture This Photography) and Kevin
Mitchell (Kevin Mitchell Photography).
This exhibition is an opportunity for
photographers across the North West
of Australia to share their version of the
beautiful Pilbara.
Many thanks to BHP Billiton Iron Ore for
proudly supporting this competition and
exhibition. The Newman Visitor Centre is
also supporting this event.
For viewing some great images from people
in the Pilbara region and sharing tips and
hints, consider joining the Facebook group

Critical Incident Response Training

By Derek McArtney

This August, Dr David Cockram will be

providing a course in Critical Incident
Response (CIR) training in Newman. David
is an experienced mental-health, stress
management, and wellbeing trainer who
has trained police, fire and emergency
services personnel, as well as other
responders.

The training relates to incidents in which

people witness and or experience trauma
from physical injury, death, personal
threat, natural disaster ... as well as to posttrauma debriefing for those who attend to
the casualties of an accident or incident,
secondary traumatisation, compassion
fatigue, self-care and more.

David is an infantry combat veteran of the

Vietnam War who in later years served in a
number of Australian international peaceoperations and at overseas humanitarian
disaster locations in the role of support/
counsellor.

It would be ideal for emergency service

personnel (e.g., Police, Fire, Ambulance,
SES, Airport security and emergency
services), HSE workers/officers, doctors,
health workers, OH&S officers, Department
of Child Protection, Chaplains etc.

The training he will provide is evidencebased best practice, aimed at equipping

responders to understand the physiological
response to a critical incident and why
people react as they do. Participants
will develop an understanding of when
the response is normal thus enabling
reassurance, and when the response is
not normal. They will learn how to assist
traumatised people in the immediate
aftermath of an incident. Participants will
also learn how to identify when to refer
someone for medical or psychological
assessment and treatment, and how to
provide appropriate longer-term support.

This one day course with morning tea,

lunch and afternoon tea provided is offered
for volunteers and paid employees:
Volunteer: $ 300.00
Employed: $ 475.00
i.e., those employed full-time in one of
the above services.
Date:
Saturday 22 August 2015
Time:

NAIDOC and
The Black Olive
By Sonya Matheson

As part of the NAIDOC Week Celebrations

this year, there are events and activities
including the opening and closing
ceremonies, the Elders morning tea, and
art in the park. The dates and times for
these are listed in Calendar of Events
further in this edition of Newman News.
One exciting inclusion is the cooking
demonstration by Mark Olive, also known
as The Black Olive. He is Australias most
celebrated Indigenous chef and has more
than 30 years experience.
Marks creative flare fuses native and
Indigenous ingredients with contemporary
techniques. Visit his website to see some of
the foods on his Native Herb Index. http://
www.blackolive.net.au/native-herb-index/
He hosts a TV series The Outback Caf,
has regularly appeared on ABCs Message
Stick, and also on Channel Tens The Circle,
and until recently he ran his own catering
company in Melbourne.
To enjoy The Black Olives demonstration,
visit Boomerang Oval on 9 July between
10:00 am and 12 noon.

Opportunity to Shop Second-hand

By Brooke Patterson

The Newman Community Opshop is

an initiative of Ashburton Aboriginal
Corporation (AAC) and has been set up so
clients who are interested in retail may gain
work related skills in a live environment.
Since AAC has been operating in Newman,
they have received generous donations of
clothing and various other items.
Donations used to be collected, processed
and taken to Western Desert communities
to sell through the community shops there.
AAC started getting so many and decided
to open a shop to benefit the entire
Newman community. They have been
open since February. Due to the generosity
of the community and assistance from a
grey nomad couple who travel the Great
Northern Highway collecting donations,
they are almost at the point where enough
money is being made every week to cover
the rent on the shop.
AAC is a not-for-profit and all the money
goes straight back into the Opshop. It is
hoped that enough is made in the next
month or so to be able to hire casual staff
so the doors can be opened on weekends.

AAC is very grateful for all the support they

have had and their clients are thoroughly
enjoying meeting everyone who comes
into the shop.

Open hours Monday-Friday between

8:30 am and 3:30 pm
Facebook under Newman Community
Opshop

They are located at the old shopping centre

two doors down from the bakery. They
have a wide range of clothes and shoes to
suit everyone and will be displaying cocktail
and ball dresses in time for the races and
the upcoming ball. There is also a range of
household items and bric-a-brac.
If you are looking for something in
particular, please do not hesitate to contact
them. They are always happy to keep an
eye out for special items.
To donate, you can drop donations off
between open hours or contact them via
Facebook to arrange for collection.
In the next couple of months, additional
services will be added including alterations
and ironing. As soon as sewing machines
are ready, information will be posted
on Facebook. Keep your eyes out for
promotions or specials on the Facebook
page.

The Cat, Bilby and Bindi

By Sonya Matheson

Besides the loveable pet moggy that stays

inside, many cats are left to roam around
Newman. Back in November 2013, laws
came into affect requiring all domestic cats
over the age of 6 months to be sterilised,
micro-chipped and registered with the
Shire. They are also required to wear a
collar with their registration tag to assist
with returning them to their rightful home.
Unfortunately, many cats are being left
to cause neighbourhood problems and
complaints especially around the light
industrial area. Complaints include noise,
attacks on family pets, and leaving stench
and filth. They are by nature nocturnal
animals.
With the Greening Australias visit to
Newman on 11 June with Terri, Bindi and
Robert Irwin came a number of encounters
around town including with the schools,
the Newman Visitor Centre, and the public
presentation at Boomerang Oval.
Among the fun and entertaining stories was
the important message of environmental
conservation.
Cats left un-checked may become feral and
cause problems with wildlife, injuring birds,
breeding indiscriminately and spreading
diseases.

One example touched upon during the

public evening presentation was that of
the Lesser Bilby which is already extinct,
and the Greater Bilby that is listed as
vulnerable while remaining in only a few
areas of Australia including the Pilbara.
They too are nocturnal by nature.
Sparse populations still exist in the Pilbara
and some around Newman. They dig deep,
spiralling burrows to help in avoidance of
predators and to assist with maintaining
temperatures. The Department of Parks
and Wildlife aims to survey and develop
long-term monitoring of bilbies in the
Pilbara.

Besides the obvious answer of desexing

and controlling domestic cats, People
for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
(PETA) believe that trapping referral cats
is the most humane option and offers
suggestions on how to make the process
as low stress as possible for the cat. PETA
offers suggestions as to what organisations
may be able to assist with rehabilitation or
other solutions and provision of trapping
systems.
The excitement of the Irwin visit to
Newman also raises awareness of precious
species in our own backyard.

Threats to the Bilby include plant

degradation, bushfires, farming, rabbits
and the dangers that feral cats cause the
few remaining Bilby by preying on them.
It has been shown that dingoes keep the
feral cat population down. Aerial baiting
has tended to work well against the fox
population that is also a threat to the Bilby.
Pets have many wonderful benefits for
their owners mental health and physical
wellbeing. It would be ideal to get the cat
issue under control so that the cared-for
cats can remain as family members in a
safe environment away from any damage
they may cause.

Hydro-Mulching

By Sonya Matheson incorporating information

in the CCGs May 2015 Meeting Notes

In a battle to manage air quality, BHP

Billiton Iron Ore has a number of dust
suppression and monitoring procedures
in place including use of mine de-watering
and eight dust monitors situated within
Newman.
A new initiative was recently trialled;
Hydro-mulching. This involved the grinding
up of wooden pallets, wood material,
paper and cardboard; an opportunity
also for recycling. Biodegradable glue or
newspapers were used as binding agents.
BHP put their mixture through a machine
known as The Beast, which then sprayed
it out.
The papier-mch mixture was sprayed
over non-paved areas much the same as
hydro-seeding has been used for years and
as, at least, one WA company has been
doing in the mining industry for over a
decade.
Benefits of this method include dust
suppression, reducing the landfill footprint,
less emissions from waste and the ability to
re-use material.
BHP continues to look at options and
further opportunities as a result of this
trial.

Recycled Water

Your sewage is a leading example of

environmental sustainability thanks to
substantial investment by the Shire of East
Pilbara in an upgrade to its wastewater
treatment plant.
Millions of litres are being conserved by
the treated wastewaters use on parks and
gardens including the towns many large
sporting ovals.
Mel Rowe, Rowcon Pty Ltd, stated, There
is nothing as good as the Shire of East
Pilbaras processing plant nor is there
anything like it in Western Australia, citing
it as being one of the most efficiently
packaged sewerage plants in the world.
Newmans high school and the ambulance
station also use the recycled water to
maintain their grounds. It has also been
used in the past for the local racetrack.
The upgrade included a new clarifier
and pumping facility, allowing increased
treatment capacity and consistent
maintenance of high quality levels of
recycled water delivered to town.

Pet Desexing Myths

Debunked

By Dr Lucy van der Weide, BScBVMS,

Veterinarian Newman Veterinary Hospital

1. Desexing my pet will make them fat and

lazy.
Desexing is often done at an age when
the majority of their growing is almost
completed, a time where dogs are
prone to being overfed. Overfeeding
and lack of exercise will make your pet
fat, not desexing. If you feed your pet
an appropriate amount of quality food
and engage in regular daily exercise your
pet should not become overweight. As
for change in personality, desexed pets
may become calmer, easier to train and
will essentially be less frustrated looking
for a mate. Non-desexed pets are more
prone to escaping and jumping fences
and/or even getting in fights in order
to seek a mate. The good news is that
desexing will not make your pet lazy.
2. It is healthy for females to have at least
one litter.
For every season a bitch has, her risk of
developing breast cancer or developing
uterus infections increases. Desexing
before their first season is preventative
against breast cancer, which can be life
threatening. Breeding can also result
in birthing difficulties for your bitch,
sometimes requiring expensive surgery
to save the mum and her puppies.
Females do not need to have at least
one litter to have a fulfilling life. There
is certainly no medical or behavioural
reason for your female dog or cat to
reproduce.
3. My dog will lose his manliness. He does
not need to be neutered.
It may surprise you to know that entire
male dogs have increased risk of medical
problems. Prostatic disease is alarmingly
high in male entire dogs. In fact, 95% of
entire male dogs over the age of 5 years
will have enlargement of the prostate,
which can be uncomfortable and
make urinating or defecating difficult.
Prostatic enlargement can also result in

prostatic infections, abscesses and even

cancer.
Male dogs who are not desexed can
become highly frustrated if they are
unable to mate. This can result in
him escaping at all costs and even
becoming involved in dog fights etc. In
fact, almost 95% of our dog fights and
those hit by cars treated at the Newman
Veterinary Hospital involve an intact
male dog. Desexing them will take away
the frustration of them not having a
regular girlfriend and the undesirable
behaviours associated with that. For
example urinating on everything
including Dr Lucys leg, without making
him less of a man. If you are still not
convinced and are reluctant to get your
dog the snip, consider trying a Superlorin
Chip, which is a 6 or 12 month reversible
non-surgical option for male dogs.
4. Desexing is too expensive.
Spread out over the course of an
animals lifetime the cost of desexing
your pet is minimal. People are often
surprised to know that breeding and/
or the medical complications of not
desexing are often far more expensive
by comparison. Although a safe and
commonly
performed
veterinary
procedure, desexing your pet requires a
full anaesthetic and is considered major
surgery. At the Newman Veterinary
Hospital, to ensure your pets operation
is as safe as possible and to ensure your
pet is comfortable and pain free, we use
comprehensive anaesthetic monitoring,
place all animals on intravenous fluids,
use injectable and take-home pain relief
and provide a bucket to prevent your
pet from licking at their sutures. If cost
is a big concern consider adopting an
animal that has already been desexed
from an organisation like SAFE Newman.
The facts are:
Desexing prevents unwanted puppies
and kittens. There is a huge oversupply
of puppies and kittens in Australia and
sadly so many do not find homes.
Desexing has significant health benefits
such as preventing painful prostatic
disease in males and potentially lifethreatening uterus infections and
breast cancers in females.
Desexing can help prevent behavioural
problems like urine marking, escaping
and fighting.
Desexing for cats is now a legal
obligation with the WA new cat laws
now in force.
Desexing can save you money in the
long term. Desexed pets are even
entitled to a discount for registration
with the Shire of East Pilbara.

BMX is Back in Town ...

By Nicole Willis

It has been a 3 year dream of President Dean

Atkins to get BMX back up and running in
Newman, for kids and adults alike. As with
anything in life, it was far from easy and
began with the BMX club engaging with the
Shire of East Pilbara to get back the lease,
thanks to the perseverance of these three
women; Donna Portelli, Heather Coburn
and Kate Swanson who initially assisted in
obtaining the lease and assisted Dean in
securing funding through BHP Billiton Iron
Ores Community Grant process. Through
the pure determination of a few, the dream
has become a reality.
The team busted a gut to source a track
builder and designer, engaging with a
professional track design team at Dirtz
Company. The track was then constructed
by Damien Connelly, whose workmanship
is known throughout the Pilbara on building
both the Hedland and Tom Price tracks.
Flash forward to Sunday 7 June and the East
Pilbara BMX Club Committee were able to
see their passion pay off when they held
the BMX Open Day in Newman, after the
proposed open day the week before was
cancelled due to unseasonal rain. Riders
came from as far away as Tom Price, with
over 100 participants signing up on the day
to give it at go!

V8 Boats

By Dwayne Ehrenreich

The Newman Jetsprint Club hosted a

race meeting on 30 May including several
competitors from Perth taking up the
challenge in the lead up to the much larger
event that will be hosted on 15 August.
It was great to see some new competitors
and equally exciting to see the number of
women piloting these machines, several
making their debut. The newest edition
to Jetsprint racing is the juniors. Several
children, the youngest being 9, took part in
racing boats and some very skilful driving
was noticed throughout the event.
The track in Newman requires competitors
to really have their wits about them as the
corners are very closely spaced and come
up very quickly at such speeds.

and the events are getting larger each time
they are run.

impart their skills onto the next generation;
Phil Kerosene (Kero) and National Coach
Jade McPherson. Jade commented that he
could not believe how great the track was.
Other feedback by some of the out-of-town
competitors was that this could very well
be the best track in the Pilbara.
Dean would also like to thank committee
members: Steve Edwards (Perth contact),
Mick Manson, Glenn Tracey, Tobie Malia,
Richard Elam, Mark Brenzi, Leon Kay, David
Pennington and Neil Malia for all their hard
work to get the track to the high level it is.
Special thanks of course go to all the wives
and partners for also putting up with the
stress of making it all a reality too! Mark
explained the open day as Organised
Chaos as there were people constantly
coming through the gate from 9.30 am to 5
pm, making for a successful first day!
As with anything in Newman, community
spirit goes a long way and we are very
fortunate to have community minded

If you or your child would like to get
involved with BMX in Newman, there
are some requirements. Bikes should
have working rear brakes, front brakes
(optional), no accessories (e.g. reflectors,
stunts pegs, chain guards or stands) and
handlebars MUST have covers or plugs on
the ends. Competitors need to wear the
correct attire; long pants and sleeves, fullface helmets, closed in shoes and gloves.
You can sign up as a member via the BMX
Australia website and find East Pilbara BMX
Club in the drop down box.
East Pilbara BMX Club has had their race
meeting on Sunday 21 June and will be
run weekly (at this stage), plus practice
every week 3:30 pm Wednesday. They are
also excited to announce that they will
be hosting the third round of the North
West Series on Saturday 25 July, this will
showcase riders from all over WA, so be
sure to support our own local riders!
There is still a long road ahead for the club
in establishing a sustainable track, with the
club applying for grants to install lighting
for night rides, canteen facilities and a

The East Pilbara BMX track

makes a comeback
BHP Billiton Iron Ore is proud to have supported the comeback of the
East Pilbara BMX track. Officially re-opening on Sunday 7 June, the
community celebrated the milestone with a family fun day.
The East Pilbara BMX Club supports and encourages children and adults of all ages to participate in the
sport of BMX, to show off local skills while having a bit of fun and encouraging outdoor exercise.
BHP Billiton Iron Ore is proud to have contributed A$60,000 to fund the construction of the track and
provide an in-kind donation of two sea containers to be used as the clubrooms and kitchen.

Newman now has a new sporting facility for children and the wider community that provides opportunities
for participation, spectating and/or volunteering. Racers also have the chance to represent Newman in
nationwide races and the club will provide programs for disadvantaged children to ensure everyone in the
community can participate in the exciting events.
President of the BMX Club Dean Atkins is excited about the re-opening which brings back memories for
him and many other long term residents who used to race at the track when they were young.

Im pleased as a community that weve been able to re-establish the club and I appreciate immensely the
support from local business, community volunteers and BHP Billiton Iron Ore, he said.
