Barka began his speech by admitting the terror

that he was overcome by when first being asked
to speak at graduation. But this only proved
his next words, that, everyone is scared.
Whether it be the fear of graduating, getting a
job, or starting a family, Barka explained how
it is normal to have fears. He then stated that
it is how you deal with these fears that dictate
the person you become, and shape who you
are. Barka gave the advice, Do not be scared
of making mistakes, do be scared of giving up.
This was then followed by his own story of how
he managed to work his way up in a company
that he made achievable through creating his
own opportunities and by expanding his network.
He also encouraged the class to go outside of
their comfort zone, explaining that, life is about
putting yourself out there, before leaving them
with one final piece of advice. He asked them to
remember that, luck is preparing yourself so that
when an opportunity presents itself you can take
advantage of it.
Valedictorian Amy Bosteels then followed with
her speech. By comparing life to a book, she was

As early as 1956 boys
and girls between the ages
of 7 and 14 were bused,
transported by car, or
walked to Camp Cayuga
on the Lowell Road in
Hudson. Camp Cayuga,
a summer day camp,
was operated by John S.
Groves on his familys
265-acre farm.
The camp activities
started at 9 a.m. and
ended at 4 p.m. Each
camper brought their
own lunch except on
Thursdays when there was
a noonday cookout. The
camping season was eight
weeks, during the months
of July and August. As
many as 125-plus children came from towns like Milford, Amherst,
Merrimack, Lowell, Chelmsford, Nashua and Hudson. Camp
facilities included a large barn for a place of assembly, a bath
houses, Indian camps where campers divided into tribes, playing
fields, horseback riding rinks, and woods for nature study, as well
as a swimming pond dug by a bulldozer along a brook running
through the property. Horseback riding was one of the more
popular events. Special events, such as horse shows, carnivals,
and fishing derbies, were often held.
The Groves farm was located on the western side of Lowell Road
and extended to the Merrimack River. Until 1955 Mr. Groves had
farmed the land and operated an automobile sales agency on the

premises. He then turned from selling cars to teaching school. The

idea of using the farm as a summer camp was suggested to him by
a friend a few years earlier. The possibilities for expansion were
considered as tremendous as within a 15-mile radius there were
200,000 people and only two other day camps in the area.
Within a few years growth came to Lowell Road and with it
an increase in property values. The State of New Hampshire
had plans for a Circumferential Highway. By the early 1970s the
northern portion of this farm was used for the access road to the
Sagamore Bridge. Of the remaining acres, the part abutting Lowell
Road is the location of Sams Club; the back portion toward the
river is part of the Green Meadow golf course. Photo courtesy of

June 21-27 is
Lightening Safety Week
submitted by David S. Morin, HFD Public Information Liaison
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has
designated the week of June 21 as Lightening Safety Week in order
to call attention to the dangers of deadly lightening strikes. As we
begin our summer season in the outdoors, thunderstorms are a real
threat. On the beach, the golf course, sporting events, boating,
or in the mountains. People are placing themselves in the most
vulnerable areas during a thunderstorm.
Most of the general public is unaware of the dangers of lightening.
Lightening can kill long before and long after a storm. It can kill
remotely through the ground, trees and wiring.
Seventy percent of lightening deaths occur in June, July and
August.
Pay attention to the weather when making your plans. When
enjoying your time watch the sky and perhaps check the weather on
one of several apps available.
The best shelter is a sturdy, enclosed building.
Tents and pavilions do not provide adequate
shelter. A motor vehicle makes good shelter (one
caution, be careful under large trees. Move to a
safe area.
Enjoy the outdoors, pay attention, and be
careful.

LMS Student Project Requires a High Level of Thinking

Eighth grade band and Period F science come together.

submitted by Elizabeth Dodd
Litchfield Middle School Band Director Carolyn
Leite and eighth grade science teacher Liz Dodd
recently combined their classes to participate
in an exciting interdisciplinary project. Both
educators are fully supportive of the STEAM
initiative which seeks to engage students in
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and
Mathematics.
To wrap up the year, Mrs. Leite and Ms. Dodd
designed an interactive performance assessment
in which band students were paired with science
students to investigate engineering and sound.
Students were provided with random materials

and required to design and build a functioning

instrument capable of producing five different
pitches. While the science students had
to be able to explain how the instrument
produced sound, band students were tasked
with teaching their partner to play Mary Had
a Little Lamb on the instrument their group
designed.
After each group performed individually,
the project culminated in a whole group
performance with band students playing
traditional instruments and science students
playing their musical inventions. The students

Litchfield Community Church Commemorates Flag Day

submitted by Rev. Dr. Lori Wiley
The Litchfield Community Church
celebrated Flag Day on Sunday, June 14,
with the help of the color guard from Boy
Scout Crew 11. The color guard led the
congregation in the pledges of allegiance
to the Christian and American flags, and
in a recessional from the sanctuary to the
cemetery, where each person placed a
flag in front of a grave.
The congregation included its youngest
member, Corinne, age 3, who was helped
by Bob McGilvary of Hudson, to place her
flag. McGilvary, a Vietnam veteran, made
sure the veterans were honored.
Killian Franklin and his father, David
Franklin, served as the color guard. David
Franklin is involved in Scouting at the
troop level as assistant scoutmaster. He
is also an adviser to the crew level Boy
Scouts, the chaplain of the unit and district level Boy
Scouts, and serves on the advisory council at the
district level of Boy Scouts. They are both members
of the Litchfield Community Church family where
Franklin serves as an elder.
The (so-far undocumented) story is that there are

no human remains in the cemetery. The cemetery
had been located near the river, and got flooded. The
gravestones were rescued by the town and placed on
higher ground next to the fire station on 3A, behind
the Litchfield Community Church building, a reminder
of the resurrection: He is not here, he is risen!

Letters to

Beating the Summer Slide

Summer is here! This is the time of year when you find public
libraries across the country kicking into high gear with summer reading
programs and activities for all ages. For adults its time to relax with
beach reads and whole host of new titles. But for children and teens its
much more. Summer reading is a proven cure for the summer slide,
a real learning loss that occurs when kids are out of school. Simply
put, kids who are not reading or learning throughout the summer find
themselves behind their peers when school resumes in the fall.
The Rodgers Memorial Library kicks off its Childrens Summer
Reading Program Every Hero Has A Story on Friday, June 26 at 5
p.m. with a barbeque and an outdoor concert with the talented and
entertaining Steve Blunt and Friends. Eastern Propane has generously
donated food and Hudson Litchfield Rotary Club members are on the
grills. The Hudson Lions Club, CFWC Hudson Womens Community
and Juniors Clubs, and the Friends of the Hudson Library are providing
time, talent and additional funding. Our summer reading program is
packed with activities and this is a great opportunity to find out more.
Our Teen Summer Reading is Program Hero or Villain?
starts Monday, June 29 at 9:30 p.m. with Laser Tag in the library.
Throughout the summer teens can earn prizes with Hero points for
reading and Villain points for watching media.
Adults can avoid the summer slide too with Pages for Prizes, our
Adult Summer Reading Program where you can earn a raffle ticket for
every library book, e-book, or audiobook you read or listen to. Raffle
tickets earn gift certificates donated by local businesses to restaurants,
theaters and stores. We are also continuing our Free Friday Film Fest
beginning July 10 at 6:30 p.m. with big name films just released on
DVD, popcorn included.
Our summer hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9
a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday (and open for the movie until 9 p.m.) and 9 a.m.
to 1 p.m. Saturday. Visit us to stop the slide and have fun!

MooreMart has a New Name

by Len Lathrop
While the purpose of the organization wont be changed, Judge Paul
Moore has agreed, on the recommendation of the New Hampshire
Judicial Conduct Committee, to step down from the management and
leadership of MooreMart. While there has never been a complaint, the
requirements and regulations of judicial behavior are immense and
growing every day. Moores participation as a board member and the
organizations president would be an ongoing challenge.
Carol Moore Biggo and Brain Moore, the judges brother and sister,
who both have relocated to Virginia and dont have the ability to
physically participate at the packing events, will continue to support the
organization but no longer will hold positions on the board.
Since Feb. 19, 2004, 72,481packages have been shipped to active
military serving our country.
While the new name is not official, former MooreMart Treasurer Ted
Luszey will move up to be the president of Operation Troop Care
once the name is approved by the State of New Hampshire. The new
organization will maintain the same vision, mission and desire to serve
the troops, just under the new name. Luszey has been calling and
talking with all the corporate sponsors of the organization and reports
that all are committed to continue with the effort.

Look Beyond the Fireworks

While fireworks brighten the skies during
first weekend in July, when we have barbecues
and parties have we forgotten the recognition
of the sanctity of individual freedom? Most
know that on Independence Day we celebrate
the gift of freedom given to us 239 years ago by
the founders of our great nation.
In our world where news from other
countries reaches us as fast if not faster than
something happening in our own towns,
we should be more aware of how precious
freedom itself is. Will we understand its true
value until it is threatened or lost? The 9/11
event was the largest test of the loss of freedom
that we have felt on the shores of the United States, but did we see
it as a threat to our freedom or a terrorist attack to overthrow our
government?

The girls of Troop 10900 would like to thank all individuals who
participated in helping make their Silver Award projects a reality.
Numerous family members provided funding to allow us to begin
our projects. Community members donated fleece to our cause. The
Quilters Guild and members of the Hudson Memorial staff joined
us in our first community event, and the Senior Center director and
members joined us in our second community event. The Keystone Girl
Scouts joined us in making blankets and minis at our third community
event, and Hudson community members joined in our fourth and final
blanket and mini making day. The Hudson Recreation Department
and Hudson Memorial School allowed us to use their space to hold our
events. The Hudson Litchfield News posted our events in their calendar,
and the HCTV cable ran our event on their television channels. Last,
but not least, our delivery man who made sure all of the pieces made it
safely!
Thank you to our mentor, Mrs. Whitaker, for all of her guidance and
support throughout our eight month project. Thank you to the Lowe
family for your support and in joining the girls in making blankets. In
total, the girls delivered 70 lap blankets and 148 minis labeled in honor
of McKenzie Lowe to pediatric cancer patients at Childrens Hospital at
Dartmouth and Dana Farber Cancer Center. Additionally, Childrens
Hospital at Dartmouth has asked to continue our work thus making
our project sustainable. To help them begin this process, we provided
them with 38 pre-cut lap blankets to make in therapy sessions with their
pediatric patients. Without all of this community support our Silver
Award Projects could not have been as successful!

Cadet Alyssa Wilson Receives ROTC Award

submitted by Rosie Sampson, Director, The Inn at Fairview

Are you taking a vacation this summer? What about a couple of
weeks at the beach, or moving that recent high school graduate to
college? Sounds like a typical summer schedule, but, if you are the
primary caregiver to an elderly parent, grandparent, or other loved
one taking a vacation is impossible or is it? More and more
families are taking care of their loved one at home and trying to find
the balance between being caregiver, parent, and/or spouse. Trying
to plan time away can create anxiety as you worry about who will
care for your loved at home. There is an option available that many
families are unaware of that is called Respite.
Respite is a unique opportunity for a caregiver to secure a shortterm stay at a healthcare community for a long weekend, a couple
of weeks or even a month depending on what the individual needs

are. Most healthcare communities offer respite options where all

of the needs of your loved one will be met by a caring, professional
staff, 24 hours each day. The staff will provide daily personal care,
medication assistance, meals and a host of activities for active
engagement. While you are enjoying time away, you can have
peace of mind knowing that your loved one is safe and well cared
for and enjoying a little vacation of their own.
Respite is also a great option for individuals who are recovering
from surgery or other medical concerns and are not ready to return
home alone just yet. Or better yet, someone who wants to try
assisted living without making a long-term commitment. Supportive
options are available for caregivers and for seniors who are living
independently. For more information about respite options call
Rosie Sampson at 816-0070.

able to capture the questions that everyone asks throughout life: who, what, when,
where, and why. Bosteels explained how we grow up asking why, only to then ask
when, until we are faced with the everlasting who. Who will we be? she asked,
and where are we going? She encouraged her class to continue in writing the
rest of their story, to begin another chapter of their life as they end one together.
Bosteels parts with a closing remark, telling her class, I cannot wait to see who you
are.
It was at this time that the presentation
of diplomas began. Led by Principal
Laurie Rothhaus, Assistant Principal
Michael Perez, and CHS 2003 alumnus
and social studies teacher Nathan
Cooper, the graduates took the stage one
by one. Family and friends clustered
toward the front and cheered for their
respective grads
The senior crowd erupted in applause,
and silly string, as the final graduate
strode off stage to be replaced by Senior
Class President Connor Cote who
began the final farewell speech. Cote
addressed his class with ease; feeling
very comfortable stating that it is time
for the real world to start. Admitting that
he wasnt sure if he was ready to leave
Campbell yet, he began to touch upon
the hard lasts that accompany senior
year. Yet, he was quick to remind his
class that they are about to create a
new list of firsts. Then, with eyes fixed
upon the front doors of Campbell High,
Cote simply stated, lets go home guys.

Chris Beauregard gives the salutatory speech.

Glad the Future

is in Very Capable Hands
Congratulations to each and every member of the Class of 2015!
This graduating class is comprised of some the best students and nicest people I have had the pleasure of
working with and for. The focus that the students put on doing their best both in and out of the classroom is
highly commendable. This class has an eclectic mix of students that have excelled in many different areas
represented by the diversity of their post-secondary plans. I am more optimistic than ever that the future of
Hudson, the future of New Hampshire, and the future of our country is in very capable hands! As always;
stay safe, be well, and no matter where you end up, never forget where you came from.
Congratulations Class of 2015!

sang I Lived by the band OneRepublic

Waiting for the entrance march and their diplomas are Balinda Geddes, Brittany Gibson,
Deanna Donadio, Heather Hotham and Hannah Harrington.

Preceding the Chester Steckevicz award was a performance by Alvirne Highs

B-Naturals, who earned a standing ovation following their rendition of I Lived.
Alvirne High School Principal Steven Beals followed the performance with a
message to the graduates. Beals did exactly what all high school students have been
advised not to do throughout their years of schooling, procrastinate.
He admitted to all that his speechs theme didnt come to him until
9:45 p.m. Wednesday night, giving him one night to write a message
to the graduating class.
The procrastination served him well though, as his opening
comments to the graduates were the purpose of life is living a life
of purpose. He urged the graduates to find their purpose in life,
just as he did through engaging in a career in education. Beals
challenged the graduates to prove to the world that the me
generation can be the we generation by using their talents to help
each other and change the world.
After the graduates accepted the diplomas they worked so hard
for, Beals gave his closing remarks, which included the singing and
flash mob dance to MC Hammers U Cant Touch This in efforts to

Dental Emergencies
Quick and
effective
action in
response to a
dental
emergency
can minimize
the damage
from such an
injury. As a
parent you may be the first
to respond to such an injury.
There are several guidelines
to follow. First, many dental
injuries can be prevented.
Most dental injuries occur
between one and two years
old, when babies are just
learning to walk and seven
to ten years old; when
children are particularly
active. To prevent injuries,
children should be
supervised closely, especially
when tired and are apt to be
more careless. Correcting
maligned front teeth will
lower the risk of serious injury,

since children with protruding

teeth are most prone to dental
trauma.
Anyone involved in a
contact sport with a high
potential for dental injury can
benefit from the added
protection of a mouth guard.
A mouth guard absorbs shock
so it reduces the possibility of
dental injury as well as a
concussion. If an injury does
result with a mouth guard in
place, it will act as a splint
keeping teeth and jaws in
place until you can get
professional care.
Healthy teeth and related
supporting structures obtained
through proper oral hygiene
habits are the most assurable
way teeth will withstand
trauma. Proper oral hygiene
habits and regular professional
dental care will ensure healthy
teeth and related supporting
structures.

Quality Dental Care For Your Entire Family

submitted by Gloria R. Hussey,

Nottingham West Elementary School
On June 17, Nottingham West
students who ride Hudson School Bus
4 celebrated winning the Peaceful Bus
Challenge with a pizza party in the
school courtyard. The Peaceful Bus
Challenge was the final activity in the
year-long Peaceful Bus Program. Pizzas
were donated by the Hudson House of
Pizza, and delivered by detectives Alan
Marcotte and Kevin Riley of the Hudson
Police Department.
In October, School Resource
Officer Cassandra Avery challenged
all Nottingham West students to
improve their behavior on the school
bus. Students learned about the
Peaceful School Bus rules during bus
group meetings where they completed
surveys about their experiences on the
school bus and discussed how to make
the ride to and from school safe and
comfortable for everyone. Results of the
survey indicated that 90 percent of all
Nottingham West students feel safe on
the school bus.
Additional components of the Peaceful
School Bus program included classroom
lessons on how to solve peer problems,
an on-line parent presentation on bus
rules and procedures, and a student
produced video about the Peaceful
School Bus. More information about
this program can be found on the
Nottingham West website.

Hudson BOS Questions Kinder Morgan

by Kaela Law
Chairman Richard Maddox introduced Kinder Morgan
representatives Michael Lennon and Lucas Meyer to a crowd of
Hudson and area residents at a special town hall meeting on June
16.
Were having this meeting, Maddox announced, to allow the
selectmen to decide what they want for this project, whether to
support or oppose.
Other towns along the proposed Northeast Energy Direct
Pipeline route, 12 in total so far including Mason, Brookline,
Pelham and Litchfield, have formed a New Hampshire Municipal
Pipeline Coalition comprised of select board members and town
administrators. The NHMPC have recently hired Richard Kanuff as
their attorney.
Kanuff also represents a group called Pipeline Awareness Network
for the Northeast, or PLAN-NE, which has been intervening in the
Public Utilities Commission docket No. 14-380 in which Liberty
Utilities, based out of Londonderry, is seeking approval to sign
a 20-year precedent agreement for capacity on the proposed
Northeast Energy Direct Pipeline. To date Liberty has not received
that approval. Testimony given independently from the Office
of Consumer Advocates, the PUC staff, and Kanuff representing
PLAN-NE have all made statements advising against approval of this
contract, that the risk to present ratepayers would be too great.
The pending contract with Liberty Utilities was stated as one of
the reasons this pipeline route is now proposed for southern New
Hampshire where before it ran straight through Massachusetts. BAE
Systems is in Hudson, Lucas Meyer of Kinder Morgan said, This is
market driven. This is what the region is saying they need.
Chairman Maddox questioned the route since only 5 to 10 percent
of the gas would be for New Hampshire consumption. He was
answered by Meyer that, We are a power grid for New England.
Texas is the only state that has its own power grid. Ten percent of
this pipeline is going directly (pending) into NH through Liberty
Utilities. If we want to have competitive rates were going to need
natural gas. BAE Systems is at a competitive disadvantage. They
need to figure out a way to lower their energy bill to compete on

a national level.
No representatives from BAE Systems were in attendance at the
meeting.
Another reason stated for the routing through New Hampshire
was that Kinder Morgan is hoping to theoretically co-locate along
the existing power line utility ROW easements of National Grid and
Eversource.
A resident of Pelham asked the Kinder Morgan reps if they did, in
fact, have an agreement to co-locate their pipeline as they said they
did during their presentation.
Michael Lennon of Kinder Morgan answered no. We do not
have an agreement, Lennon stated.
The Pelham resident followed up his question with a suggestion to
Chairman Maddox, to send these meeting minutes to FERC (Federal
Energy Regulatory Commission governmental agency which will
either authorize or deny this pipeline project) and the SEC (New
Hampshire Site Evaluation Committee), asking that the powerline
expansion project and the pipeline project be delayed until there is a
coordination of both.
The powerline expansion project is called the Merrimack Valley
Reliability Project. It would see a new set of towers carrying a
345 kv line within the existing row. Siting a natural gas pipeline in
close proximity to high current overhead transmission lines presents
further engineering and safety concerns regarding pipe corrosion, as
well as concerns of the residents who live along the utility easement
about the number of years for large-scale construction projects.
Lennon said, We are only in consultation with them (National
Grid and Eversouce). We would be starting up as they are finishing
... If we dont have a formal agreement in the fall, then we wouldnt
file.
Kinder Morgan is planning to file with the Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission in November 2015.
Another element, seemingly missing from their proposal, is a
gas-fired power plant. At this time, there have not been any power
plants to seek capacity from this pipeline. Lennon stated the
company is still actively seeking customers.
Jodi Hardcastle, a resident of Hudson and directly affected
property owner, came to the meeting with research in hand, solid

numbers presented by the ISO-NE and the EIA, both independent

energy companies, that showed New Hampshire electricity prices
are below the national average and that New Englands electricity
use or demand is forecasted to grow only 1 percent annually over
the next decade. With energy efficiency factored in, that number
drops to 0.1 percent. This sounds that actually we are not as power
hungry as we used to be, Hardcastle said.
Other residents and members of the Hudson Board of Selectmen
questioned pipeline safety.
Selectman Roger Coutu raised concerns about Kinder Morgans
trustworthiness as a company. He cited Kinder Morgans poor safety
track record as according to the PHMSA, Pipeline and Hazardous
Materials Safety Administration, a branch of the U.S. Department of
Transportation that inspects and regulates the nations pipelines as
well as the Sightline Institute, an independent, non-profit research
and communications center.
Kinder Morgan, Coutu said, as a coal shipper has a track
record of pollution, law breaking, and cover ups. Why should I as a
representative of the town of Hudson trust Kinder Morgan?
Lucas Meyer of Kinder Morgan responded: Moving energy is not
without issue. There can be no guarantee that there will not be an
incident, but he claimed that, natural gas pipelines are the safest
way to move energy.
Corrosion of pipes and interference by third parties are the biggest
contributors to pipeline failures.
Selectman Marilyn McGrath asked the last question of the
evening, What is the potential for someone damaging the pipeline
deliberately?
We bury them to get them out of sight, out of mind, Lennon
responded, but also to prevent people being able to get to them.
Homeland Security is involved with monitoring pipelines.
By meetings end, the Hudson Board of Selectmen agreed that
they had all gathered a lot of new information that they didnt have
previously, and would need more time to deliberate before any final
decisions were made regarding whether to oppose the project or
support it, and where to go from that decision.

Warning Signs a Tire is About to go Flat

tread: Even drivers who know little about cars can typically recognize when tire tread has worn down to the point
where the tire is a safety risk. But drivers who are unsure
can employ the quarter test. Insert a quarter into the tread of
the tire, with George Washingtons head upright. If you can
see the hairline of the United States first president, then you
need to replace the tire. Perform this test on each of your
vehicles four tires.
Low pressure: Drivers who do not routinely check their
tire pressure are more likely to endure a flat or blowout
than those who regularly make sure their tires are at the
manufacturer-recommended pressure, which can be found
in a vehicle owners manual or by calling the tire manufacturer or visiting their website. An underinflated tire is under
stress that can cause the tire to blowout. In addition, poorly
inflated tires force engines to work harder, which negatively

affects a cars fuel efficiency.

Vibration: A car that vibrates excessively may do so
because tires are damaged. Poor suspension is another
cause of excessive vibration. Whatever is behind a car that
is vibrating, drivers should immediately take the car to their
mechanic for an inspection.
Physical damage to the tire: Sometimes tires exhibit
physical damage like bulges or cuts, and such signs could
mean a flat tire or blowout is just around the corner. Tires
that exhibit such physical damage need to be replaced immediately.
Flat tires and blowouts can prove both scary and inconvenient. Drivers who want to avoid such problems should routinely inspect their tires for indicators that a flat or blowout is
likely to occur.

of the league, Frank Calder. He served as league president from 1917

to 1943 and was credited with helping to expand hockeys popularity
among mainstream sports. The trophy has been awarded to the AHL
champion every year since 1938, and Manchester became the 31st
different city to win the Calder Cup.
The Kings will look to add another trophy to their collection next
season when the Monarchs play their inaugural season as a member
of the ECHL. In what essentially becomes a swap of players, the
Monarchs and the Ontario Reign will trade league affiliations. The
Manchester team will inherit the roster of a Reign team that advanced
to the Western Conference Finals in the Kelly Cup playoffs this season,
while Ontario will inherit most of the AHL players that made up the
Monarchs roster this year.

This years Dodgers team beat out the Nationals in a highly competitive championship game last
Sunday at Muldoon Park in Pelham. The game was exciting for players and spectators alike, and the final
score of 8-6 reflected how closely the teams were matched. This championship marks the third time in
four years that the Dodgers have won it all.

The champagne was pouring down Patrik Bartosaks face and
soaking his goalie equipment, but it didnt seem to bother him.
The Czech Republic native, who speaks very strong English,
was trying to describe what it meant for his Manchester Monarchs
to win the first Calder Cup in franchise history. The magnitude of
earning the American Hockey Leagues equivalent of the Stanley
Cup not to mention the fact that the 22-year-old goaltender
orchestrated the best performance of his young career was too
much for Bartosak to articulate.
I have no words for this Unbelievable feeling.
Bartosak made a sparkling 31 saves in clinching game 5 of the
Calder Cup finals against the Utica Comets, lifting the Monarchs to
their first-ever league championship. The Monarchs, who had never
been to the AHLs championship round prior to this season, rolled
through the playoffs with a 15-4 record. They won 13 of their last
15 games before raising the Calder Cup at the Utica Memorial
Auditorium on June 13.
Unbelievable group of guys, unbelievable team, Bartosak said
after game 5. The rookie goalie entered the series in relief of AHL
wins leader J.F. Berube, who suffered a leg injury in game 3. The
greatest team Ive ever been on.
Jordan Weal was named the MVP of the Calder Cup playoffs
after tying teammate Michael Mersch for the most points in the
postseason with 22. His march through the playoffs, which
included eight multi-point games, propelled him into first place on
the Monarchs all-time list for points in the playoffs.
Weve been working so hard all year. We have such a great
group of guys, Weal said. To be able to win it with a group like
this its so much fun. We wanted this real bad.
The Monarchs scored two goals in the clinching of game 5. The
second goal, and eventual game winner, was fittingly tallied by
team captain Vincent LoVerde. It was only fair that the third-year
defenseman scored the game winner because the captain is the first
player to hoist the Calder Cup at the trophy presentation.
I think were a team that, no matter whether were facing
adversity, whether were winning or losing, we stay pretty
comfortable and collected and were able to play our game,

LoVerde said immediately after

passing the Calder Cup off to
his teammates.
The other goal scorer in the
clinching game was a player
who had only been on the
team since the end of April.
Eighteen-year-old winger
Adrian Kempe combined for
four goals in the last three
games of the finals, and the
first-round selection of the
Kings in the 2014 draft had
eight goals total in the playoffs.
It was a great team. I heard
a lot about it. They were first
in the league when I came
here, Kempe said when asked
about his initial thoughts when
joining the Monarchs during the stretch
run after completing his season in the
Swedish Hockey League. It was a
really good team, so I just tried to play
my game and learn this game when I
got here. I think I learned pretty quickly,
and I think I got better and better the
whole playoffs.
In his first season as the head coach
in Manchester, Mike Stothers earned the
AHLs Coach of the Year after guiding
the team to the best record in the league
and capped the year off with his first
Calder Cup as a head coach. A former
Philadelphia Flyers prospect, Stothers
previously won the Calder Cup as a
player with the Maine Mariners.
When you look back at it now, it was
worth every mile that they skated and
every bus trip that we took, Stothers
said. Ive been fortunate enough to be
in this spot before as a player. I just want
to stand back and watch these guys enjoy
it Its the best feeling in the world.
We set it as a goal and it was a mission of ours way back when
we broke camp in LA, Stothers said. Weve been pushing hard,
and Ive been pushing hard, and you know what? They dont need
much prodding. This is a great group of guys.
When the Monarchs hoisted the 35-pound Calder Cup in Utica,
it added a new jewel to the crown of achievements by their NHL
affiliate, the Los Angeles Kings. LA has won the Stanley Cup in two
of the last four NHL seasons, but the franchise hadnt been affiliated
with a Calder Cup winner since the Springfield Indians won the
Calder Cup in 1974-75. The franchises only other Calder Cup win
came in 1970-71 when the Springfield Kings topped the Providence
Reds in a four-game sweep.
The AHLs championship trophy is named after the first president
