A proposal to address safety concerns by transforming

angled parking to parallel parking in the downtown core
left the business community in a frenzy last week, shocked
at the idea of losing half the parking stalls in front of their
establishment and alienating business at a time of muchneeded revival.
The two-phase downtown beautification project, presented in collaboration with the Downtown Design Review
Committee (DDRC) and the Town of Strathmore, proposed
implementing an inexpensive approach of changing the
existing 78 angled parking stalls along 2nd & 3rd Avenue
to parallel parking stalls a process that would eliminate
half the stalls in the process.
The plan, which also includes widening sidewalks, the
addition of green spaces, outdoor seating areas, and crosswalk bump-outs, was a result of numerous traffic violations and accidents over the past decade.
The issue with the angled parking is that our community, like almost every other community in the province
has grown out of angled parking, said Glenn Freeland,
chair of the DDRC. Angled parking had its time and its
place when vehicles were a lot smaller and when traffic
was a lot less. The vehicles have gotten so large and they
stick out so far, and so the safety aspect of it is astronomical. No parking style is perfect, but parallel is the safer of
the two.
According to a letter from the Strathmore RCMP, the current parking scenario on 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue is a
serious public safety concern for vehicles, pedestrians, and
cyclists. Statistics show that 118 cases of traffic violations
were committed from 2005 to 2013. Furthermore, 121 collisions took place over the past ten years in the area.
During an information session on June 16, business
owners took issue with the lack of other parking in close
proximity, cost of the entire beautification project, the impact of the loss of the Co-op, and challenges parallel parking poses to seniors and new drivers.
While many in attendances voiced their concern that the
changes may be premature losing parking spaces without offering an alternative residents were told that the
town had thought about the possibility of entering into a
partnership, such as with the Church on 2nd Avenue, in
helping maintain the parking lot in exchange for its usage.
Although others felt the town should purchase the Co-op
property and turn it into a public parking area, town officials felt it was too soon for such a commitment.
We want to make sure everybody is heard and were
not trying to hurt businesses, said Town of Strathmore
Councillor Pat Fule, who is also a member of the DDRC.
We are thinking about safety, because we are averaging
15 incidences a year on angle parking backing out into the
oncoming traffic. Thats a worry for us, and were trying to
find a good solution that will help the downtown core but
also make it safe.

Original Joes patrons urged to get

vaccinated against Hepatitis A
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Numerous local residents are protecting themselves against a dreadful infectious disease, after a food handler at the
Strathmore Original Joes restaurant tested positive for Hepatitis A.
Although Alberta Health Services believes the risk of secondary infection is
low, those patrons who ate at the establishment between June 9 and June 19 are
encouraged to get vaccinated within 14
days of exposure.
Hepatitis A is a notifiable disease,
which means that whenever its diagnosed by the lab, which wouldve been
the case for this individual, then they notify us right away and we investigate,
said Judy MacDonald, medical officer of
health at AHS Calgary zone.
I must emphasize that the risk is very
low. We feel there is merit in offering
vaccine to help protect people that may
have been exposed.
While MacDonald said secondary infections are extremely rare, AHS statistics show that Hepatitis A infections in
the Calgary zone area are on the rise
from last year. As data fluctuates from
year to year, the Calgary zone has already had 16 confirmed cases for 2015,

and 20 cases across Alberta. A noticeable jump from 2014, where only 9 cases
were recorded in the Calgary zone, and
24 across the province.
We have more cases already this year
than we had all of last year, but that can
happen, and the majority of Hepatitis
A cases occur in people that have travelled, MacDonald added. Its a reminder of the recommendation to go and see
a travel clinic before you travel outside
of Canada, United States, or Western Europe, because Hepatitis A is quite common in other parts of the world and you
can get exposed through contaminated
food or water.
AHS confirmed that the food handler
of the Strathmore Original Joes, located
at #8, 100 Ranch Market, travelled outside of the country where they believe
she contracted the virus.
As the virus can be present in the stool,
and is transmitted through the fecal-oral
route, Hepatitis A can spread through
the preparation of food and drink when
the infected isnt practicing proper hygiene. It is expected that over 200 customers frequented the establishment a
day, before AHS inspected the facilities
on June 19.
According to Health Canada, the viral
disease occurs worldwide but is most

common in developing countries. Symptoms of the infectious disease, which targets the liver, can take up to 50 days to
appear, and include fever, nausea, jaundice, loss of appetite, fatigue, dark urine
and grey-coloured stool.
Currently there is no treatment for the
disease other than relief of the symptoms.
Vaccination clinics were held on June
23 and June 24 in Calgary, Chestermere,
and Strathmore.
Anyone who ate at the restaurant during June 9-19 is encouraged to follow up
with the Strathmore Public Health Office
by calling 403.361.7200. The clinic also
urges residents to bring their healthcare
card and any record of immunization
available.

Q: When is a Medical Examiner required?

A: In most cases, the attending physician is able

to provide the documentation required after

a death occurs. In some cases, a Medical
Examiner (M.E.) is required.
These cases include accidents, unnatural,
violent, unexplained, or unexpected deaths.
Other situations include if the death is due to
negligence, if the deceased was in custody,
if the death occurred within 10 days of an
operation, if the deceased was under anesthesia
or recovering from anesthesia, or if the death is
occupationally related. There are several more
specific circumstances that require a M.E.s
attention. In the event that an M.E. is required,
they will examine the deceased to find a reason
for the death and notify the family when any
results are found. At any point, the M.E. may
authorize an autopsy without requiring prior
consent from the family of the deceased.

Increase to the Langdon Peace

ANDREA ROBERTS

In accordance with Landgons ever
growing population, a demand by the
community has lead to a greater police
presence in the area.
Community members approached
their council representative about an
increase in police presence after grow-

ing concerns for public safety.

People have been asking me to
slow speeders down so I brought it to
the council, said Rolly Ashdown, the
councilor for the area.
It was successful and the council
gave a little bit more to the budget for
policing.

with a focus specifically on Langdon.

Ashdown said the patrol car will
have no set routine and will appear
on various days and times. He added
that while community members may
not physically see an increase in police presence they will see an increase
in tickets. The officers will be cracking
down on speeding and other traffic
law violations and Ashdown warned
for speeders to be more careful when
driving.
So really it is about adding more of
a presence in Langdon, Ashdown reaffirmed. The force is Langdon is likely
adequate but people would like to see
more so the county is complying.

Proposed downtown parking stall

changes worry businesses
Continued from Page 1

Recurring violations of eastbound
traffic crossing the solid yellow line to
park in one of the angled parking stalls
and unavoidable actions of sometimes
backing out blind into busy traffic, motivated the DDRC to propose a solution.
While the project emphasizes available
parking in existing lots including Kinsmen Park, the Co-op lot, and the parking area near the Strathmore Legion,
business owners remained unconvinced that their customers would continue to choose their services over box
stores near the highway where parking
is in abundance.
I think its a little scary that at a time
when were facing probably the biggest
crisis the downtown has ever faced that
were making access to our customers
more difficult, said Linda Code, coowner of Strathmores Florist. Cutting
down the parking will do that. Theres
not if, ands, or buts about it.
With a great turn-out to the meeting,
the DDRC, a volunteer committee, received feedback on possible solutions
including the installation of warning
signs regarding backing up and stronger enforcement of parking time limits.
Local business owner Mike Field also
proposed changing 2nd Avenue to a
one way a change that had previously
been implemented with no success.
Less parking? Youre killing my
business, and youre killing me, said
Field, co-owner of the Strathmore Value
Drugmart. Whos going to come and
shop at my store when they can go to
Shoppers Drugmart on the highway
and have a huge parking lot? I think
what youre doing here; youre killing
business downtown. I need customers,
and I need them to park in front of my

While some attendees were worried
that the project would commence regardless, Freeland assured community
members that the meeting was for information gathering and feedback purposes only, and emphasised the DDRCs
desire to work with the building and
business owners in the downtown area.

in the long term. A few tips on treating a sunburn:
Move to a cool place; have a cool shower then apply

Small businesses
fearful of minimum
wage hike
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

One of the NDPs election platforms, to increase the minimum wage to $15 by 2018, is raising concern among many
Alberta businesses including many small, local businesses
who fear for their future.
This increase in minimum wage does scare us and a lot
of other industries that will be affected, said Barb Stefanich
and Linda Oberg, the owners of the Red Carrot in Strathmore.
We definitely think it will be detrimental to small businesses. We cant raise our prices which means we are going
to have to have less staff and less service.
The Red Carrot is one of the small businesses that will
be affected by the wage increase. As a small business they
already offset their employees wages with discounts to the
store. The owners fear that the increase wont just affect
small businesses or those that pay out minimum wage, but
also the economy as a whole. Furthermore, big businesses
might have to leave the province in order to operate in
cheaper environments, which will hurt the economy. They
also reason if you raise minimum wage then you will have
to raise everyones wages and because of this everything
will increase in prices making the standard of living a lot
more expensive.
But really the extra money isnt going to be there or help
anyone because the price of everything is going to go up,
the owners agreed.
The thought is also shared by some economists, like Todd
Hirsch, ATB Financials Chief Economist, who said that increasing the minimum wage is like using a blunt tool to fix
poverty.
If you raise it for one you have to raise it for all, said
Hirsch.
However, both Hirsch and the Red Carrot owners agree

of the small businesses that fear the proposed minimum wage increase will
end up hurting their business as well as Albertas economy.

that some workers who earn minimum wage should be

earning more compared to others.
Currently the minimum wage in Alberta is set at $10.20,
and $9.95 for those who serve alcohol, whereas the new
wage will have a 42 per cent increase. According to a wage
profile proposed by the government of Alberta only 2.2 per
cent of employees earn minimum wage in the province and
of those the majority, at 39 per cent, are in the 15 to 19 age
range. According to Hirsch if the minimum wage spikes,
teenagers may face termination first, in order for the companys survival, and the Red Carrot feels they will have to
follow suit.
Because small business owners may not see the value in
working harder for less reward, Oberg and Stefanich lack
faith in the businesses survival when the proposed changes take effect.
Yet the government is telling people not to fear for they
have a plan. Jay Fisher, a government public affairs officer
in charge of jobs and the workplace, said that the government understands that people are afraid and oppose the
idea. The government has been in talks with employers,
businesses, and representatives of minimum wage workers
to see how the increase will be implemented. The government also plans to introduce the increase in increments
rather than it being introduced overnight.

Canadian Tire leaps to first place in Jumpstart Campaign

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

Every year Canadian Tires across the country
take part in the Jumpstart Campaign, which helps
to keep children active and fund disadvantaged
children to fulfill their sporting dreams.
Last year the Strathmore Canadian Tire came
second in the national standing of who has raised
the most money for the campaign. However, as
this year the winners will be taken separately from
the East and West, the local Canadian Tire is in
first place. The winner is Western Canada will win

a community BBQ event valued at $20,000.

Basically our goal is to fundraise as much as we
can so we never have to turn away any requests
for funding, said Shelley Orford, co-owner of the
Strathmore Canadian Tire. That way we can support every child that needs it in Strathmore.
The winner will be announced at the end of
June, which is also the Red Ball Campaign month.
Each ball costs $2 and is in support of the Jumpstart campaign. As of June 18 the Strathmore Canadian Tire has raised $5,340 in red ball sales and
hope to raise more on June 27.
This year in order to try to raise more money,

the Strathmore Canadian Tire will be holding their own

Jumpstart Day (which is nationally held in May) on June
27. The event will have a number of different activities such
as a BBQ, face painting and silent auction. The highlight of
the day, however, will be the dunk tank. Some local companies have signed up to be dunked. The dunking starts at
9 a.m. with Canadian Tire owner Randy Orford, manager
Jim Brooks before moving on to Strathmore RCMP Staff Sgt.
Kevin Reilly. Other participants include Chinook Financial,
Wheatland Kings, Save My License, Global Training, Tim
Hortons, Royal Bank and Animal Care Centre. Spectators can
also see Strathmore Mayor Michael Ells get dunked at noon.
When Strathmore Canadian Tire started participating in
the campaign in 2011, they helped 21 kids in the local area;
each year since then that number has doubled. In 2014 they
managed to fund 278 local kids with an amount that came
to $32,301.

Mutual aid agreement settled

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Wheatland County verbally agreed to sign a mutual aid
agreement with Environmental and Sustainable Resource
Development (ESRD).
The agreement just has to be signed by the county in order
for it to be completed that has taken effect June 16 and will
run until June 16, 2017.
The negotiations were very brief, said Alan Parkin,
Wheatland Countys Chief Administrative Officer.
One of our staff talked with the ESRD counterpart and
proposed an agreement and we made a couple of revisions
and it was done.
This will allow county access to more resources in case of
a fire emergency within county limits.
The agreement outlined will include administration, which
outlines who you should contact at the county in case of
that emergency and procedures. Prevention and Detection
involves fire and control orders, prescribed burning rules
and wildlife as well as urban interface. Presuppression suggests ways for hazard and resource sharing. Wildlife Operations includes provisions of manpower and equipment for
mutual aid while training will offer certain opportunities to
prepare for emergency situations.
The county will have now have access to equipment such
as helicopters, an airtanker group, birddog aircraft and manpower.

Blue-Green Algae recurrence

in Wheatland County
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Alberta Health Services (AHS) once
again issued a blue-green algae advisory in Wheatland County, after the
toxin-producing bloom was spotted in
Eagle Lake and Severn Creek Reservoir
several weeks ago.
Since 2012 Eagle Lake has fallen victim to the naturally occurring bacteria
also known as Cyanobacteria turning clear lakes into turquoise, gray, tan
or sometimes red soupy-like bodies of
water.
However, it wasnt the lakes appearance that caused medical professionals to issue safety warnings, but rather
the possible toxins often accompanied
with the bloom.
At this site weve had advisories
before, so its not too surprising that
it happened again, said Dr. Richard
Musto, medical officer of health for
AHS Calgary zone.
As part of our routine monitoring, a
water test was done and it showed the
cell count to be above cut-off levels. If
it gets above a certain level then we say
thats critical in terms of the amount of
toxin that will be released. Its the toxin that were worried about. Its toxic
to both, humans and animals.
With sunny and hot temperatures
playing active motivators in the bacterias proliferation, a bloom may become visible in the provinces nutrientrich lakes over the summer months.
With the possibility of the release of
toxins that, when concentrated, could
lead to irritation of the skin and eyes,
sore throat, rash, fever, nausea, and diarrhea, Wheatland County recently advised their residents to stay away from
the infected water bodies.
Were giving out warnings, said
Lisa Bastarache, communications officer for Wheatland County. Our people were out there putting up signs
and warning people about what can
happen. Some of the areas around
there are still nice to go around if you
want to go for a picnic. Just stay away
from the water and dont eat any of
the fish.
Wheatland County does not have
the authority to force residents to stay
away from the lakes, and without ways
to treat the situation, the county requires patience until the algae eventually succumbs to colder temperatures
in the fall.
Currently Alberta Health Services
is monitoring 50 public recreational
beaches on 37 lakes, which were subject to the algae before. Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development and Alberta Tourism, Park
and Recreation are also monitoring

close to 60 whole lake sites.

While Musto said the risks are serious, Eagle Lake RV Resort owner-operator Leslie Pringle has observed the
algae for years and said its not the
lakes that have changed but the hype
surrounding the natural occurrence.
Its a perfectly natural phenomenon
in this and any prairie lake, said Pringle. Algae has always been here. Its
important to read and listen and decide for yourself and know that the
lake hasnt changed. Algae was coming and going from these lakes, its the
way the information is being collected
and the way information is being disseminated thats changed.
According to AHS, as weather and
wind conditions can contribute to the
relocation of an algae bloom within
the lake, those areas clear of the bloom
are safe to use for recreational purposes while the advisory is in place.
However, because boiling the lake
water will not remove the blue-green
algae-produced toxins, residents are
warned to provide an alternate source
of drinking water for themselves, their
pets, and livestock.
Wheatland County will provide an
update immediately if the situation
were to change. However, based on
previous years, the advisory may remain in place until the end of summer.

Link Alberta at 1.866.408.5465.

Standing up for families by extending compassionate care

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
Parliamentary Report

One of the most difficult times for anyone is when a loved
one is dying or at risk of death. The demands of caring for a
gravely ill family member can jeopardize both employment
and financial security. The Government of Canada believes
that, during such times, Canadians should not have to choose
between keeping their job and caring for their family.
Compassionate care benefits, provided through the Employment Insurance (EI) program, are available to individuals tem-

porarily away from work to care for a sick family member with a significant risk of death. Our
Conservative government is increasing the financial
support for individuals taking care of family members facing a significant risk of death
Effective January 3, 2016, Economic Action Plan
(EAP) 2015 will invest up to an additional $37 million annually to extend the duration of compassionate care benefits from the current six weeks to six
months. The benefits can also be taken within an
expanded period of 52 weeks (up from 26 weeks)
and can be shared between family members.
Estimates suggest that up to 6,900 claimants per
year could benefit from this enhanced measure.
The enhancements being made to compassionate
care benefits through EAP 2015 reaffirms our Governments commitment to helping families receive
the support they need as they care for loved ones
across Canada and here in Crowfoot.
Eligibility for compassionate care benefits remains the same, including the requirement for a
medical certificate signed by a doctor attesting to
the family members condition. Self-employed Canadians can apply for EI special benefits if they are
registered for access to the EI program.
This builds on our Governments record of past

legislation, such as the Helping Families in Need

Act which allows parents to suspend the payment
of their EI parental benefits if they become ill or
are injured, and collect EI sickness benefits. This
allows additional flexibility to claimants in receipt
of EI compassionate care benefits or EI benefits
for parents of critically ill children to convert to
their EI sickness benefits if they become ill or are
injured. They may resume collecting the balance of
their parental benefits thereafter, if needed.
The Government of Canada is committed to supporting Canadian families. The changes we are
making through Economic Action Plan 2015 will
ensure that families are able to care for their loved
ones. Through these enhancements, the Government is ensuring that the EI program continues to
help Canadians when they need it most.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dont let it happen to you

To the Editor
When it comes to accidents, its common to think,
oh, it will never happen to us.
That is what we thought until our six-year-old son,
Roan, a member of The War Amps Child Amputee
(CHAMP) Program, lost his leg in a lawn mower accident.
A few years ago, Roan was riding on a lawn mower
with an adult when he fell off and severed his left leg
at the knee. As he was airlifted by helicopter to the
hospital, we wondered if we were going to see him
again.
With lawn cutting season here, we want to help
spread Roans message across the country that kids

should never be around a lawn mower. It doesnt matter how good you are with machinery, it just takes a
moment for a life-changing accident to happen. Today, Roan is an active and energetic child thanks to
help from The War Amps with financial assistance for
artificial limbs, regional seminars and peer support.
We just hope that his story will prevent even one child
from being injured.
If you would like to learn more about how to encourage children to play safely, please visit waramps.

Giving thanks to local Lions

To the Editor
Hats off to the Cheadle Lions Club for planting
the seed for a much needed regional hospice for the
Strathmore area. Most of us do not want to think about
the need of a hospice until we are actually faced with
this difficult time be it a family member, a friend, or
just someone who needs this care.
As there is only one palliative care room in the
Strathmore General Hospital, and at times many people need this facility, the need is great and growing.
The basic idea of a hospice is a place where people
who need this care will not have to leave their own
community, but will be in a peaceful caring place
where friends and family can visit and spend time
with them.

Once the facility is up and running. Caring and

trained health personnel will be there to assist patients and meet their needs in a caring and peaceful
manner.
Hopefully many people will work together and donate to this project. The work will not be easy, the
budgets will be tight and many ideas need to be discussed and shared.
But if we as a community of concerned people volunteer and work together the vision will become a
reality.
Remember even the biggest snowball came from a
single snowflake.

Barricaded man surrenders to RCMP

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Following a three-hour evacuation and an
equipped and on-guard RCMP presence in one of
Strathmores neighbourhoods, authorities were able
to convince a man to leave the residence in which
he had unlawfully barricaded himself, and surrender.
Eight RCMP officers were spotted setting up a perimeter around a residence near Brentwood Drive
and Maplewood Drive on June 19 at approximately
6:30 p.m, after 49-year-old Vaughn Eugene Carrigan contacted the authorities describing his whereabouts and his intentions of remaining in the home.
By entering the home, Carrigan violated conditions of his recognizance - a condition imposed by
the courts - that prohibit the individual from stepping foot on the property as a result of a domestic violence incident. Proceeding to barricade the
doors and windows with household items and reportedly possessing a hatchet, Strathmore RCMP
communicated with Carrigan for three hours before
he eventually surrendered.

These type of events do, unfortunately, occur,

said Staff Sgt. Steve Vince, with the Strathmore
RCMP detachment. When they do, the police in the
area are looking out for the safety of everyone in
that area. Were interfering with peoples off-time
that are trying to enjoy their home-life, and we appreciate the publics assistance in keeping everyone
in the community safe.
While Vince added that these incidents are neither common nor rare, however, the detachment
deals with several similar incidents a year. The
Emergency Response Team was also requested for
assistance though they didnt arrive before Carrigan
surrendered.
The residents residing on the property were not
home at the time of the incident, and the surrounding neighbours were allowed back into their homes
by 10 p.m.
Carrigans current charges include uttering
threats, driving while unauthorized, and three
counts of breach of recognizance, along with other
previously laid charged. He is currently being held
in custody and will appear in Drumheller court on
June 26.

Dear Monday to say I hate you would be an understatement. In the words of the younger generation
you suck! Oh yeah, you act like this fresh new day,
where anything can happen, and blah, blah, blah. The
reality is that you are what we face, after weve had
two days of fun and freedom! Its like youre a punishment, a penance just because we had a little too
much fun on our days off! In fact, you jerk, the NY
Times stated there are 20 per cent more heart attacks
on Mondays than any other day of the week! Its bad
enough youre who you are, but do you have to actually kill us more, too?! If you were a girl, this would
be a break up letter! Its actually too bad that you cant
be dumped that were stuck with you! In fact, Ive
written a poem for you: Roses are red, violets are blue
garbage is dumped, and so are you! From now on
Monday, youre dead to me!
Dear Tuesday, Im sorry. I want to like you more than
I do. The one good thing about you, is that at least
youre not Monday! However, youre too much like
Monday! Youre like the rebound girl or guy thats way
too much like the ex! You hint at being closer to the
work weeks end, but not enough to really be of use to
us! In fact, you remind me of dancing with a cousin at
a wedding. Oh sure, it may be okay, but we all know
nothings going to come of it! I read that some cultures
actually consider Tuesday as a bad luck day. In fact,
On a Tuesday in 1204 (history lesson coming!), Constantinople was conquered by the Christian Crusaders.
Now I dont even really know where Constantinople is,
but you can bet it was bad luck for the people living
there! So, dont get cocky Tuesday, youre still a pretty
useless day, and Fridays really far away!
Dear Wednesday, I must admit youre a breath of
fresh air compared to Tuesday! In fact, our more modern culture has nicknamed you hump day! Now, for
those of you who are twisted, the other reason for the
name is not the real one clean it up, this is a G- Rated column! Youre hump day, because youre finally
close to the middle of the week. If we get through you,
its downhill to Friday! However, lets face it, youre still
no Friday youre a bit of a tease, hinting at what
Friday could be! In fact, theres an old saying about
being born on Wednesday, and I gotta tell ya it fits!
Remember this one? Wednesdays child is full of
woe. Hey, that kind of makes sense for me, anyway,
because Debbie was born on a Wednesday, and Ive
been on the receiving end of some of that woe!
Dear Thursday, I like you, I like you a lot in fact
I may actually have a crush on you! Youre a taste

of whats to come. Youre like Christmas Eve, where

we look forward to the next day so much, its hard
to sleep! I mean many bars even have Thursday specials! If weve made it to Thursday, we can make it
one more day, and get to the mother lode of treasure
Friday! Even if we get carried away on Thursday,
we know all we have to do, is survive just one workday, we can do that! Even some universities and colleges hold fewer classes on Fridays, so Thursdays have
become known as Thirstdays, as students can drink
more, and then face a lighter Friday, where they can
sleep in and recover!
Dear Friday, you are the best! Or, as the kids would
say, youre the bomb! Youre the day we count on
for fun, dress down days at work, we get paid on you,
and we meet pals for a beverage or two or three!
Many people have weekends off, so youre the day we
celebrate, and often let loose a bit. You can see it here
in Strathmore, its in the air, you can smell it! Or is that
the deep fried wings? I dont have to tell you I love
you, and everyone else does, too!
Dear Saturday, how do I love you? Let me count the
ways! I love you for the freedom, the excitement of
being the start of two whole days off no teenagers
to try and motivate to read something, or God forbid
work! We can sleep in, do something amazing, see
things, or even just finally do nothing! If you were a
woman, Id marry you! Sorry Deb, but Saturdays are
pretty great!
Dear Sunday, youre a fickle b*#*#! I mean, youre
our rest day, but you also come with baggage, and
you know what that is. No matter how fun you start
off, no matter what amazing thing is planned, theres
always your pal Monday lurking on the horizon. Youre
the train tunnel of fun, with a light at the end thats
moving really fast at us! And that light is a train light,
and were going to be smeared on the cow catcher!
Theres even a new condition referred to as Sunday
Night Blues! 78 per cent of people in a recent Monster.com poll reported they fall into a slight depression
because the weekends fun is replaced by the stress of
the new workweek! Yeah, thats right, Monday Im
talking about you!
P.S. I would like to thank my co-writers this week,
my children Brennen and Breanne Fule.

Carseland Fire Association waiting

on Countys decision
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

The Carseland Fire Fighter Association (C.F.F.A) is looking
to Wheatland County to cover the costs for their new fire
hall, after a 40/60 split has the association scrambling to
raise nearly half a million dollars.
Wheatland County currently operates the Strathmore and
Carseland fire halls, after the Strathmore Rural Fire Association disbanded last year. As part of the recommendations
laid out in the Fire Service Review, that was conducted as
a result Wheatland County taking over the fire service, the
Carseland fire hall was deemed in need of upgrades and expansion. As the building is quite old, the county is considering building a new facility. However, with an estimated cost
of over $1 million, C.F.F.A is concerned about being able to
raise $480,000, and approached Wheatland County about
absorbing all costs on June 16.
Were the main funder of it, said Alan Parkin, CAO of
Wheatland County. Currently the funding model is 40 per
cent from the community and 60 per cent from the county.
Other municipalities have paid more for a fire hall.
Yet, the association argued their organization wasnt created to tackle such ambitious projects, instead focus on equipment and firefighter needs.

It was originally set up just as a fundraising body to help out the firemen
because it used to be looked after by
the Strathmore Rural Firefighters Association, said Adrian Knaus, president
of the C.F.F.A.
They had an association both for
the funding and one for the day-to-day
operations. This board originally was
not set up to do that, to go out and
raise that kind of funds for the hall.
The County is looking at breaking
ground in 2016 but with the slower
process of fundraising, the process
could take a little longer.
He added that they will stay in limbo
until there is a decision made from the
County.
Carseland area resident, Susan Page,
believes that any emergency service is
esssential and the county should implement a tax levy on the community
to pay for the fire hall.
To me its silly that they want people to fundraise, it should be a tax,
said Page.
To my thinking, thats the way it
should be. Its like a hospital or school.
Fire coverage is extremely important
and it shouldnt be left to people to
think do I?
She believes that the community will
have to pay but that the county should
make it mandatory for people to contribute.
Its going to come out of our pockets one way or another, said Page.
Where does the county get their
money? From taxes.
While Parkin said the community
will be expected to come up with their
share, the project is projected to open
in 2017.

Alberta Authors featured

at Strathmore library
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Owing to a collaboration
between three institutions,
Alberta authors - including
Strathmores own are receiving well-deserved recognition while providing
patrons a greater selection
of books to read over the
summer.
The Marigold Library System partnered up with the
Book Publishers Association
of Alberta,and the Writers
Guild of Alberta to offer the
Read Alberta Books display
that is currently showcased
at the Strathmore Municipal
Library.
Eager to get first dibs at
the collection, the library is
the first Marigold member
library to feature the selection before it travels to its
next destination in just over
a weeks time.
The book publishing
market in Canada is really
tough and to get publicity
is really difficult for Alberta
authors, so this is kind of a
way to promote them and
help people discover great
local literature that they
may not otherwise have access to, said Rachel Dick
Hughes, director of library
services in Strathmore.
We booked it as fast as
we could. Sometimes people come and see the stacks
and its just overwhelming.
Or they just pick the same
popular authors theyve always read were hoping
by having them featured
they will step out of their
comfort zone a little bit and
discover this.

Library staff supplemented 11 of the 40 books with

Strathmore authors to provide a greater local presence among the selection.
With a wide variety of
topics, the display offers
books ranging in genres
from short stories to fiction
to non-fiction. Amidst the
literature are some familiar
names including Patricia
Mullin, Derek Donais, Audrey Gene, and Denise Geremia.
Having lived in Strathmore for six years, Samantha
Adkins, co-founder of the
Strathmore Writers Group
and author of eight books,
held her first book signing
at the local library and understands the importance of
recognizing local talent.
The library here has always been really supportive
of my writing, Adkins said.
Usually your first readers
are people that you know,
so people in your community. So having that at your local library is a great way for
people to learn that youre a
writer. Its just a way to get
the word out and get new
readers.
The travelling display also
includes Alberta award winning authors and nominees
from 2014.
Excited about the display,
Dick Hughes hopes the program will grow and include
a greater children books variety.
The Read Alberta Books
display has been available
at the Strathmore Municipal
Library since June 1, and
patrons may still sign out
books until July 9.

As the first point of access for adult learners, the communitybased learning system has the crucial role of providing a
non-threatening, flexible learning environment that raises
awareness and creates a culture of learning in communities.
Through the Community Adult Learning Program, Alberta
Innovation and Advanced Education provides funding to
support the delivery of part-time, non-formal adult learning
opportunities in local communities, providing learners with
access to the information, services or learning opportunities
needed to be successful.
New programs and guidelines:
1. 1. Foundational Learning/Essential Skills: skills needed
for work, learning and life. They are used in nearly every
job at different levels of complexity and enable people
to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change.
Essential skills are reading, writing, document use,
numeracy, computer use, thinking, oral communication,
working with others and continuous learning.
2. English Language Learning (speaking, reading, writing
and listening): is essential for newcomers to Alberta
to settle into local communities, reduce barriers to
employment, and become full participants in society.
3. Basic Technology Skills/Workplace Readiness:
coordinating with local business and industry to identify
learning gaps and build a skilled workforce with the
ability to use computers and related technology; also to
leverage programs and services by responding to these
gaps to encourage continued growth in the community.
Basic Technology Skills include: computer software
and application skill development, communication
through social media, e-mail, safe internet navigation,
occupation-specific computer and technology training,
and understanding workplace culture.
Additional programs coming soon:
Foundational Family Literacy: Programs are directed towards
the parents of children up to six years of age and support
the oral language and early literacy development of their
children. Foundational Family Literacy promotes the value
and benefits of literacy by providing parents with the skills
and strategies to create a literacy-rich environment in the
home and using daily activities to strengthen the emergent
literacy skills of their children.

Co-op closing doors keeps

small businesses alive
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

When conglomerate giant Co-op decided on taking its business out of the
downtown and relocate to the highway
to accommodate growing demand and
a lack of capacity, the move was seen
as the destruction of Strathmores core
ironically now the only lifeline for some
local businesses.
Exorbitant rent in areas across the
highway and in Ranch Market are leaving several local businesses treading
water, unable to keep up with the areas
big-box stores.
As a result, more businesses are occupying space in the downtown area,
some of which were left abandoned.
Years ago the downtown was expensive too and I didnt want to move there,
but now with the big guys moving out
theres more room for the little guys,
said Ed McCune, owner of Strathmores
Movie Gallery.
Its ridiculous, you just cant survive
out here anymore with a small business.
I see it as a very positive move, way
cheaper rent. Now every cent I make
doesnt go into making the landlord
happy, and its a better location as far as
proximity to my customers.
Despite saving money on rent, which
McCune said cost him $35 per square
foot, the new location on Main Street
will locate him closer to his customers,
some of whom live in walking distance.
In accordance with the Downtown
Design Review Committees vision of
increasing density, beautifying the area,
and attracting more pedestrians to the
main stretch, the relocation is one of
several changes currently taking effect
in Strathmore.
Every town, every community, every
city has specific areas that are commercially developed for multiple box stores,
restaurants, shopping centres, groceries
stores, and so we will never be able to
compete with that, said Glenn Freeland,
chair of the Downtown Design Review
Committee (DDRC).
A lot of this stuff shouldve been
done twenty years ago, theres been a
lot of pushback from a lot of our elected officials in the past. Times they are
changing. Either you evolve and change
or you die. We dont want to die, we
want to change.
The Town of Strathmore has sec-

tioned the downtown in three distinct

areas: Park Village to Waddy Lane,
Wheatland Trail and Lakeside Boulevard
as the north downtown; 2nd, 3rd, and
4th Avenue, where most businesses are
concentrated as central downtown; and
south downtown including 5th, 6th and
some of 4th Avenue, a predominantly
residential area.
While the DDRC has been productive
this year with the installation of new
street signs, the volunteer committee efforts aim to make the core aesthetically
more appealing to building and business owners and renters.
Amidst the changes, which recently
included upgrades to the downtown
storm sewer infrastructure to accommodate future growth and the approval of
a 12-unit apartment building, independently owned sporting good store Rebel
Sports is taking up residence in the former Saan store thats been sitting empty
for years.
Theres a need and theres a want for
it here in town, said owner Rhonda McCoomb.
Ive got lots of parking here and visibility. I could be on the highway, but
my core customers arent going to be
highway traffic, its going to be local. So
being downtown made sense to me.
The store will carry sporting equipment for hockey, ringette, baseball, lacrosse as well as clothing, runners, and
skates. With minor construction and
upgrades to the structure already underway, the store is expected to have
its grand opening in the beginning of
August.
According to Freeland, making the
downtown more appealing through
the use of signs, removing back lights,
and greener spaces can have an impact
on residents frequenting the area. The
DDRC is also looking into bringing more
festivals to Strathmores downtown and
together with the town realize that attracting residents will revive the area.
We think we have a strategy and
quite a few of us have been to conferences that deal specifically with saving
downtowns in small towns, said Town
of Strathmore Councillor Pat Fule.
The number one thing they keep
hammering away at us is that you have
to have residents living downtown. You
have to increase the density and if you
have the residents then retail will follow,
or the retail will be saved.

Award-winning director brings romantic comedy to Rosebud stage

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Award-winning
director
Kevin McKendrick brings his
talents to Rosebud Theatre
this summer, directing The
Last Train to Nibroc on the
BMO Studio Stage. McKendrick won the 2015 Calgary
Theatre Critics Award for Best
Direction of a Play for Equivocation, which he directed
for the Shakespeare Company this winter. He also recently received the Harry and
Martha Cohen Award from
Alberta Theatre Projects, for
significant and sustained contribution to Calgary theatre.
The Last Train to Nibroc is
a romantic comedy, set in the
1940s. (Raleigh) is a flyer in
the U.S. Air Force, whos just
left the service for medical
reasons, because he has epilepsy, McKendrick said. On a
train to Corbin, Kentucky, he
meets May, whos traveling
back from California where
shed gone to meet her fianc, expecting theyd become
missionaries. Heather Pattengale and Jordan Cutbill play
May and Raleigh.
Its a story about love and
forgiveness. Its romantic.
Its very funny in places. Its
poignant, McKendrick said.
The script itself is a really

strong piece of writing. Its

evocative. It makes you feel
things. It makes you laugh in
a genuine way,
Here are two people who
were pursuing a dream that
they thought was the most
important thing in their life,
and those dreams have been
shattered, he said. They
come to realize that what
they really want and need is
in their own backyard rather
than across the seas.
The authentic dialogue
in the very real relationship
(between May and Raleigh)
is the plays biggest strength,
he said. Its fraught with all
of the foibles that we experience as humans -- anxiety and
fear and questioning faith.
And wondering what our
purpose is in life. The playwright has captured a very
human exploration of what it
means to be a person.
Norma Roth created a
wonderfully evocative design, he said. Were using
the sense of the same setting
and just altering it slightly,
to try and create a place that
moves in time and place. Its
been a very strong design
that way.
And sound designer Paul
Zacharias is using banjo, accordion and guitar for the
soundtrack, interweaving his

original work with gospel and

Appalachian music. Its a really
wonderful sound to accompany
a play, McKendrick said.
If youve never been out to
Rosebud, what a delightful way
to make this your introduction
to the place, he said. You can
come out and have a bite to eat
and enjoy the beautiful setting,

Comic store offers rare day camp

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

Local comic book store, Weve got
Issues, and an elementary teacher are
working together to ensure Strathmore
kids have an unforgettable summer this
year, by offering a day camp focused on
crafts, comic books, and games.
Starting next week, kids aged eight

to 14 can participate in video gaming

tournaments, writing their own comic
books, and creating their very own superhero.
When the opportunity arose to create a day camp, Westmount Elementary
Grade 5 teacher Aric Wutzke didnt hesitate to jump on board, and has already
received much interest among the students in his card game club.

Growing up I never really had a

place to hang out until I started playing
card games, and everywhere I moved to
the comic book store was one of those
places where I knew I could find friends
and just have a good time, Wutzke said.
Our goal is to have a fun, safe place
for kids to hang out. Were really trying
to create something more than a comic
book store, but be a part of the community.
The day camp will engage participants with numerous creative activities
that will constantly change on a daily
basis. Such projects include decorating
an Ikea table by plastering it with comic
book cut-outs or Magic cards, depending on each individuals interests. The
initiative will also dedicate one day to
vintage video games, where boxes are
being dusted off and kids have a chance
to compete against each other playing
some of the classics. As well, Wutzke
is incorporating some of his card club
success by giving away card decks and
teaching those interested to play the
card game Magic.
Since opening his store in early 2014,
Dave Harvey, the owner of Weve Got

Issues, often heard parents inquire on

whether he would offer a day camp.
While he wasnt planning on providing
such a service, the mood took a slightly
different turn when Wutzke, one of his
regulars, decided to organize the project and heed the demand.
Its not daycare, we dont classify
ourselves as that, but it is that kind of
mentality, Harvey said.
I mentioned it to a teacher, who is a
regular here, and he said I would love
to organize something like that, thatd
be awesome. So now were doing it. A
lot of these kids want to do stuff they
actually enjoy in the summer.
The two organizers are hoping to limit the number of students to 12 participants with a couple additional walk-ins
a day.
The day camp will kick off weekdays
on July 2 until July 16 and Aug. 3 to
Aug. 28. While several of Wutzkes students have already pre-registered, parents can drop off their kids on a daily
basis for $25 a day. Signing up for five
days will cost $100, 10 days $180, and
to attend every day of the program will
total $480.

The Municipal Affairs announcement
of ending a nearly five-year-long budget freeze and implementing the former governments promises of increasing grant funding, is posing a stumbling
block for library systems who in turn
are facing a possible $500,000 shortfall.
After years of struggling with insufficient provincial funding frozen to
the 2010 population and neglecting
to consider thousands of people new
to Albertan communities announcements were made of increasing the municipal grants and system grant rates
by 10 cents, while thawing the budget
freeze and upgrading to a 2014 population base.
Although the proposed financial
swelling of the previously stagnant
$1.5 million grant funding would result
in additional $215,000, library systems
experienced a hiccup when told only
75 per cent of the forecast will be allocated by the end of June leaving
the organizations cash-strapped once
again.
This is not what I wouldve gotten normally last year, said Michelle
Toombs, CEO of the Marigold Library
System. Were short about $500,000
from what we hoped to get later on in
the fall. Were hopeful that when things
settle down and the new government
has a chance to regroup that they take
a look at the budget and we will get
what we were promised.
With proposed changes suggesting
$5.55 per capita in municipal grants
and $4.70 in system grants for last years
population size, the Marigold Library
System was expecting a total of $1.76
million. As only three-quarters, or $1.3
million, of the funds are being dished
out until the fall, Marigold is forced to
tighten their belts and postpone anticipated projects into the foreseeable
future. Such initiatives include upgrading IT systems, replacing delivery vans,
and a new space. However, Toombs
remained optimistic that no changes
will occur to their service grants, or the
$1,000 IT Capacity Fund, which allows
libraries to continue to pay for sourcing
of materials, and the maintenance and
licensing of IT equipment.
According to last years numbers, the
Strathmore Municipal Library one of
Marigolds 37 member libraries relied
on the library system for nine per cent
of its funding. Despite heavily relying
on the municipality for a whopping 54
per cent, 20 per cent of their revenues
also came from the Alberta Library

Grant. With expectations of receiving

the remaining 25 per cent once the
budget is approved in the fall, the staff
at the local library remain confident
the NDP government will honour their
commitment.
Its not for sure but its worded quite
strongly, said Rachel Dick Hughes, director of library services at the Strathmore Municipal Library, who added
the library would face challenges if the
money were to be reclaimed.
Last year we got $66,000 from the
province, so that would mean about
$16,500 would have to come out of our
budget, which would be very difficult.
By that point its really hard to cut anything, because the year is three-quarters of the way over. Wed tighten up as
much as we could but reserves would
have to fill in the gaps.
Municipal Affairs is projecting that a
total of $29 million will be distributed
in provincial funds to municipal and
system library boards.
Shannon Greer, press secretary with
the minister of Municipal affairs and
service Alberta, said they are pleased
to strengthen and support communities
through operating grants and investments in the provincial public library
network.
Both Marigold and the Strathmore
Municipal Library wrote letters to the
current Minister of Municipal Affairs
with emphasis on the importance of
the library services in Alberta. Once the
smallest library system in the province,
and now sitting in the third-largest spot,
Marigold recently also acquired Banff.
While continuing to grow, Toombs was
relieved about the funding adjustments,
as some libraries have hinted at the closure of their facilities due to a lack of
funding.
We didnt know anything about the
funding, we were told that everything
was on hold, we didnt have any prospects in sight, we didnt know if we
were going to get a funding increase,
and we didnt know what was going
to happen, Toombs said. The reason
why getting 75 per cent now is good
news, is because we didnt know when
and if we would get that money, and
we were wondering how we were going to make the payment.
Pending legislative approval, the
2015-2016 total provincial financial
support for public library services is
expected to be $36 million. Until details regarding the provincial budget
are released in the fall, Strathmores library and the Marigold Library System
will need to sit tight until their second
instalment is received.

Farewell to PJs Appliances

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

After years of dedication and hard
work the owners of PJs Appliance
Warehouse are closing down shop and
heading on to the next phase of their
lives.
Lorne and Trudy Grigg bought the
store on May 19, 1999, and for the past
16 years the store has been a staple in
the Strathmore and Wheatland communities.
We had a long run and kept ourselves entertained but its a lot of work,
six days a week, said Lorne.
As members of the Lions Club and active participants in many of the towns
initiatives Trudy and Lorne are no
strangers in the Strathmore community.
However, their decision to retire may

see them leave Strathmore as they hope

to move to B.C where their two-year-old
granddaughter lives. Moving will allow
them to spend more quality family time
with her without the hassle of traveling.
With fond memories of the past 16
years in the business, including some
about rather disastrous appliances,
Trudy is thankful to everyone for their
patronage over the years as well as the
hugs and cards they have received over
the past few weeks.
People have been telling us how
much they will miss the store and saying that they are sorry we are leaving,
said Trudy.
The Griggs tried to put the business
up for sale but to no avail. While the
shop is closing the warranties for the
merchandise will all remain intact.
The retirement sale started June 19.

Siksika Outreach school band together to achieve success

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Siksika Outreach School has come a
long way since 13 students and their
teachers crammed into a dilapidated
portable. With a vision of growing into
a bigger space, the creation of a tightknit support system, and a merger with
Sequoia Outreach School, the institution is now 171 students strong accompanied a 62 per cent success rate.
After the unification, Siksika Outreach School, whose students are often battling issues of substance abuse,
mental health, domestic and justice
problems, grew from a junior high
school to accommodating up to Grade
12 students, including young parents.
As last year marked the first graduation ceremony with 18 graduates,
the institution is congratulating a bigger graduating class this year with 26
of their students crossing the stage
many regular trailblazers who are
among the first in their family to receive the diploma.
Theyre dealing with many issues, and theyre referred here based
on those issues typically, and even
with that safety net that were trying
to create, its still difficult, said Bruce
Dobbin, principal at Siksika Outreach
School.
When you watch them, its quite
amazing, theyre helping each other
with those issues.
It didnt take long for staff to realize
that these students required more than
just academic help with the Alberta
curriculum. Through a hands-on approach of helping the individual with
issues outside of the educational system, whether it be childcare or transportation, Dobbin said the staff and
students have moulded into a family.
Two students who have benefited
from the approach are Leesha Leather
and Kadejah Waterchief, both orphans
raised by family members and each
raising two children of their own.
I wanted a future for my children
plus I want to be a good role models
for my siblings, if they see me graduate
then hopefully it will inspire them to
graduate, said Leather, whose younger
sister is also attending the school. It
was pretty hard, and a couple times I
thought about giving up because my
pregnancy was just too tiresome for
me, but I thought for my kids I need to
keep going. It was better to do it now.
With hopes of returning to Siksika
Nation after receiving a degree in Cor-

rectional Studies, 24-year-old father of

two Nigel Young was also able to graduate in part due to the available resources. As his oldest daughter suffers
from a rare genetic disorder, Young,
who recruited his sister and brother-inlaw, pursued his studies while logging
hours of over time at the childrens
hospital. Receiving parenting advice
from Denise Peterson for years, education consultant and teacher, she said
the relationships shes formed with students at an outreach school differ from
those at a mainstream school.
We dont feel that its our role to tell

them what they need, they tell us what

they need, and our job is find a way to
provide it, Peterson said.
Whats wonderful about working in
an outreach school with the range of
ages of kids, is that junior high students
can model after these guys, and thats
really important. Sometimes when
theyre young it becomes really difficult to stay on a healthy path and one
of the best things that happens in this
environment is that older students nurture and model the younger students.
Siksika Outreach School had their
graduation ceremony on June 22.

Pilot project almost complete

JUSTIN SEWARD

Wheatland Countys Floating Island

Pilot Project that began in a Carseland
sewage lagoon earlier this spring is
now almost complete, with it expecting
to open before the end of June.
The project was meant to enhance
the well being of the storage ponds
and to create habitats for wildlife that
call them home.
It is part of an initiative to reduce
phosphorus going into our water bodies, and is funded by the Lake Winnipeg Basin Stewardship Fund, said
Dave Churchill, Wheatland Countys
General Manager for Transportation
and Infrastructure Services.
The islands are called Floating Concentrated Wetlands, and are made up
of recycled, plastic, non-toxic drinking
bottles.
The plants, and its bacteria, that sit
on top of the island, will absorb un-

wanted nutrients from the pond to improve water quality.

Churchill added that this project
would benefit not only wildlife but
also the people who are normally surrounding them in this type of environment.
The benefit will be for the environment, fish in the rivers, sports fishermen, the public, ratepayers/taxpayers
(and) the County, he said.
However he did caution that this site
that is not public friendly because of
the materials being used.
Because the experiment is of a biohazardous nature (the project simulates
an effluent purification system and will
contain bio-hazardous materials) members of the public are asked to refrain
from visiting the site, said Churchill.
He also did say that the project would
be receiving $100,000 from the Lake
Winnipeg Basin Stewardship Fund but
did not know the exact costs to complete the project.

SPORTS
A test of strength
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Since he was 13-years-old, Strathmores Brandon
Thompson watched in awe as strong, colossal men
lifted weighty Atlas Stones and pulled mammoth
machinery hundreds of feet. Then on June 20, after four years of power-lifting and with only five
months of strongman training under his weight-lifting-belt, the 29-year-old beat his personal records
and finished fourth place in his first-ever Strongman competition.
I like the competitive aspect of it, and Ive always found it fascinating some of the things these
guys could do and how strong they were, said
Thompson. It was harder than I had expected and
really challenging, but it was a lot of fun.
The 12th annual Strongman Classic competition
in Cranbrook, required 16 contestants to go headto-head in six events. Kicking off the challenge,
competitors had to complete a 46,000 lbs logging
truck pull, followed by a Pressing Event, Carry
and Drag, Hercules Hold, Atlas Stones, and Medley: Loading Event and Farmers Walk. Although
Thompson had a slow start, he quickly picked up
the pace throughout the event. Holding a 2000 lbs
vehicle on an incline with the breaks released in
each hand, he was able to hang on to his grip for
29 seconds, catapulting him into third place for the
event. From there he lifted four out of the five Atlas
Stones ranging up to 365 lbs, and placed them on
a barrel. Athletes were also required to pull a 375
lbs sled, and for the Pressing Event were required
to lift a 175 lb log over their head five times, a 150
lbs keg three times, and a 100 lbs dumbbell with
one arm. Sitting in fourth place by the time the last
event rolled around, Thompson crossed the finish
line only seconds before his opponent, solidifying
his spot.
It was amazing, said Gleichen Strongman Andrew Bolinger, owner of SMASH Strength in Cal-

gary, who helped Thompson get started in the

sport. Very few people go into their first contest
and do that well. Its clear that he is a natural at
this sport.
Thompson, who moved to Strathmore during
his last year of high school, grew up competing in
track and field and playing junior B hockey until
he turned 20 years old. Then four years ago, he
found his calling in power-lifting, participating in
three competitions placing first twice, and second
once, for his age and weight group.
Weighing in at 240 lbs and standing 6 foot 2 inches tall, Thompson felt he was finally strong enough
to consider training for the strongman sport. With
personal best scores of dead-lifting 550 lbs, a 456
lbs squat, and a bench press of 295 lbs, the athlete
was quickly challenged with unconventional ways
of training, lifting Atlas Stones and flipping 600 lbs
tires at SMASH Strength in Calgary.
With power-lifting you have to be very conscious of your technique, because the weight is really heavy, but with Strongman, there is still technique involved, but you have to be really strong,
he said, explaining that dead-lifting requires a
completely entirely approach than lifting an Atlas
Stone. Its completely different. Theres nothing
similar about it. The only thing thats similar is that
you pick something off the ground.
With only three individuals participating in
Strongman from the Strathmore and Wheatland
County area, Bolinger, who has already seen overall interest quadruple since last year, hopes accomplishments, such as Thompsons, will pique the interest of other local residents.
Id like to get more, I know theres a lot of really strong Firemen in Strathmore and they already
have the building blocks, he said.
While also working out at Anytime Fitness in
Strathmore, Thompson will continue to divide his
time with SMASH Strength in preparation for his
next competition later this year.

Strathmore local Brandon Thompson participated in his first-ever Strongman competition in Cranbook, B.C. on June 20, where he placed fourth.
(Photos clockwise l-r) The second-last event required athletes to lift five
Atlas Stones ranging up to 365 lbs. The Hercules Hold consists of athletes
hanging on to a 2,000 lbs car in each hand on an incline. Thompson held it
for 29 seconds. In the Pressing Event, lifting a 150 lbs keg above the head
three times was only one of three components of the event. The competition
kicked off with a 46,000 lbs logging truck pull. Miriam Ostermann Photos

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Reds midget triple A
baseball club will hopefully ride some
momentum before making the trek to
Columbia, Tenn. to put their skills to the
test against some tough teams in this
tournament.
With the Reds being streaky as of late,
the players know that they will have to
be more aggressive in their plate approaches and clean up on the errors if
they want to see results.
Some of the players played in the
Alaska tournament a year ago and know
what it takes to succeed against experienced opponents.
Going down to Tennessee, were definitely expecting a lot of good competition, said right fielder Reece Debeaudrap, who went on the Alaska trip last
year.
I actually think well find ourselves
some better calibre baseball down there,
just because were going even more
south where kids are playing all year. I
know a lot of the young guys are really
interested to go down and get some of
that calibre in and get some playing time

against some highly rated players.

I think the biggest difference from
down here is that were going to see a
lot more college kids than we do playing
up in the NorWest League.
The Reds will have to be a lot more
persistent in the batters box against
some harder throwing pitchers who will
make life difficult on opposition.
It will be key for the boys to be patient
in the counts to pick up reads on pitchers tendencies.
Just sitting back, try to get ahead in
the count as much as we can, trying not
to see any strikes go by us and try to
hit anything we can to in the zone, said
Debeaudrap.
For out-fielder Robert Butterwick this
will be his first taste of highly competitive baseball in the States.
He is hoping to learn from his teammates and cherish the experience.
I just want to contribute to the team,
dont make errors, play my game, said
Butterwick.
The skills possessed by the teams will
undoubtedly play a factor in how his
overall game is.
The skill level in Tennessee, I know
theyre going to be a real good team,

www.StrathmoreTimes.com

probably going to pitch high 90s, said

Butterwick.
Bench coach Ryan Kennedy wants his
club to be prepared every game to battle
and is hoping some of the experienced
players will take on a leadership role.
To take from the previous trip, is
to come out ready to play every single
game, said Kennedy.
Im hoping the guys that have been
around a little while can take that, let the
younger guys know that the quality of
games are going to be higher, the teams
are going to be better, the games going
to move faster and just having them prepared for actually what were going to
see.
He really wanted to emphasize to his
players that they need to be more aggressive at the plate and swing at more
first pitches.
The Reds played in a tournament down
in Libby, Mont. on June 26 before opening up in Columbia on June 30 where
the tournament will go until July 7.

The Strathmore softball and fast pitch
teams battled hard on the diamond in
the playoffs.
The results have shown as the U10
team won their North 1B division playoffs. The girls lost the opener but were
able to recover by reeling off two straight
wins to clinch the Calgary Minor Softball
Championships.
Meanwhile the Sabrina Tourout coached U12B team dropped the first
three games of the playoffs and now are
forced to win two straight to win gold.
The U12 Thunder fast pitch team is
hoping to get some redemption after
bowing out of league playoffs.
Their sole focus will be on the zone
playoffs on the weekend in Olds with
the hope of a berth at provincials, being
held in Edmonton in July.
The U16 Thunder completed their
travelling league playoffs in Red Deer
with a record of 1-3 and was left out of
a final round playoff spot.

Kart Racing Club finds

new home in Strathmore
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Facing too many road blocks
in Calgary, the Calgary Kart Racing Club recently ended their
five-year-long search for a new
location, settling in Strathmore
in hopes of making an impact in
the community.
The racing organization tried
to stay in Calgary but the red
tape was becoming overwhelming, and as a result the club
left the Varsity Race Track and
moved their attraction to a piece
of land northwest of Eagle Lake.
We were homeless for a year
and our club has been around
since the early 60s, this isnt the
first time this has happened,
said John Kwong, Calgary Kart
Racing Club president.
It felt that we were banging
our heads against the wall trying to stay in Calgary. This option came up and we overcame
the fact that weve always been
in the City of Calgary, which was
unusual for most motorsports facilities.
Kwong eventually approached
the Town of Strathmore to look
at building a park in the area,
and through numerous meetings
with Town Council and adminis-

tration got the approval to build

the NorthStar Raceway at the
Strathmore Motorsports Park.
The $600,000 project commenced in July 2014 and finished
in October of the same year.
Before construction could
commence, Town Council and
Wheatland County struggled
with issues surrounding traffic,
road conditions of Rural Road
250 and future development.
Coming out to Strathmore
was a breath of fresh air, dealing with the city administration
and the location was fantastic,
Kwong added.
Now that the track has opened
officially the town is hoping
it will be a popular amenity in
Strathmore.
Were excited, when we first
started talking to John and his
group and sort of the process we
went through, said Nelson.
Were hoping its going to
bring people in who will frequent our restaurants and hotels
and maybe have a look around
the town to see what else we
have to offer as well.
She added with the addition
of the track could potentially
increase the opportunities for
other recreational businesses to
follow.

Calgary Kart Racing Club president John

Kwong and his team recently set up their
facility near Eagle Lake, and are hoping the attraction will have an impact on
Strathmores amenities.

Justin Seward Photo

On May 31, the track officially

opened up with their first race
and saw great success with the
racers.
The levels that are offered
on the track are junior classes,
which are ages eight to 15, and
senior classes that run from 15 to
people over 60.
The club has an 11-race plan
for the rest of the season including the Club Championship,
while the Alberta Mini Racing
Association will use the track on
alternate weekends. The Rocky
Mountain Motards will also occasionally will be using the facility.
Kwong hopes down the road
the facility will host a national
event.

SAYING THANKS
Recently at ministerial
meetings, we have been
conversing about some of
the blessings we have in our
community. And we began to
wonder how often, if ever, we
stop to publicly acknowledge
one of the groups of people
in our community that make
a huge contribution, by their
presence and their support of
our community.
We have a wonderful variety of very generous and
compassionate business
owners here. Have you ever
stopped to read the lists of
merchants and organizations
and businesses that contribute to special events in our
community? When there are
requests for donations, for
prizes, for support, time and
time again these individuals rise and respond with
generosity. When there are
special events, when there
are calls out for community
support because there has
been some tragedy or urgent
needs have arisen, they step
up to the plate, time and time

Tri-Smore a spectacular event once again

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Eighty-year old Strathmore resident Anna Reinwald crossed
the finish line and an item off her bucket-list - with a big
smile on her face after completing the fifth annual Tri-Smore
triathlon on June 20.
With the help of numerous volunteers and committee
members, over 400 participants took to the pool, bikes and
pavement,
We had wonderful volunteers show up yesterday and just
helped with the overall organization of it and it came together beautifully without any major hiccups, said Nicola
Johnson, event organizer.
This year athletes were able to participate in the Mega
Smore - an Olympic Distance upgrade - that was the new
feature at this years event.
I talk to some of my megas when they came back and
they had a beautiful ride, the run was really good, they
thought it was well marked, said Johnson.
She thought it was a great thing to have a mixture of athletes in the event because it really showed their capabilities
and the amount of fun they had amongst each other on the

track.
It was also a pleasure for Johnson to see their efforts on
the track pay off to see more kids become active in sports.
Our quarter smores biked the same route as our fulls
and megas run. Its a little bit more organization because we
have our runners go the opposite direction of our bikers and
we try to time it so that there is very few runners around
Grey Park when were out there, said Johnson.
But that effort to us is worth doing if we can get kids and
families active. It takes a little more logistical work.
Reinwald thoroughly enjoyed every minute in her half TriSmore and praised the committee for putting on such a great
event.
It was very supportive, I enjoyed myself, said Reinwald.
Ive always wanted to do one of those. Ive never had the
opportunity and for me it wasnt like a competitive thing, I
was just thrilled I was able to do it.
Other athletes included an amputee with no arms doing
the swim, while families completed their portion of the race
in time to watch their kids participate in the Two Bites, the
youth portion of the race.
Johnson confirmed that the Mega Smore will be back next
year.

Billie passed away with his loving

family and friends by his side after a
strong fight with cancer. William Garnet McCallum
was born in the Rosetown Union Hospital on October 7, 1960. He passed away Monday, June 22,
2015 at the Strathmore Hospital. Billie attended
school in Rosetown and graduated from school in
1978. He then stepped into the fuel business with
Neil in Rosetown until 1987. From there he went to
work for Shell Canada in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan until 1995. He moved back to Rosetown and
worked at Western sales for a couple of years and
in 1998 he moved to Strathmore, Alberta where
he made this his family home. He resided there
until his passing. Real-Estate became his lifelong
occupation, and although sometimes it was very
stressful, he made it a success. Billie loved the
lake and being in water. He spent summers at
Aquadeo Beach and Emma Lake. Spending time
watching his kids playing sports was his favorite thing to do. Connor and Hailey kept him very
busy going from town to town, rink to rink, and
ball diamond to ball diamond. He enjoyed watching the kids friends just as much as if they were
his own and made many new friends wherever
they took him with his funny stories and his jokes.
Whenever you talked to Billie, he had stories about
how great of athletes his kids were. You knew the
pride he had for them. You never left Billies side
without a smile or a laugh. Billie was survived by
his four children Megan and Morgan Wingate, and
Connor (Quinn) and Hailey McCallum; his brothers
Neil (Kathie), Jason (Leah) and nieces and nephews Scott (Bobbi) Delowsky, Marlie (Joey) Green,
and Sheri Delowsky, Shae and Tommy McCallum;
step-father Durwood Cowell and step-family Guy
(Barb) Cowell, children Kevin (Jamie) and Mike
(Lisa), Paula (Brian) Lavigne and children Kristin
(Todd), Adam (Laura) and Brennan, Scott (Julie)
Cowell and their son Dan, Linda (Gill) Jouan and
their children Bryce, Chantal and Nicole, along
with a few great nieces and nephews. Two very
special people in his life, Barry (Shelly) Kalika and
Barry (Kathy) Aldridge; the mothers of his children
Sharon Wingate and Mary-Jane Sauve, and other
immediate and extended family and friends. Billie
was predeceased by his father Cal McCallum in
1979, his mother Isabel Cowell in 2007 and his
favorite hunting dog Sparky in 2014. A celebration of Billies life will be held on Friday June 26,
2015 at Hope Community Covenant Church (245
Brent Blvd., Strathmore) at 1:00 p.m. Donations
in memory of Billie may be made to a trust fund
at either the Strathmore or Rosetown RBC to support Connor and Haileys education. To send condolences, please visit Billies obituary at www.

Mortgage Matters by Strathmores Mortgage Specialist

now is a great time to buy a new home. When negotiating the purchase price of your new
home people dont often think about what the real cost of the home is because most people
are so focused on the purchase price they forget about the price to finance. First time home
buyers the time is now dont wait. In todays low interest market the overall price of the
home is effectively reduced by the interest rate itself. Call me today and get preapproved. I will
let you know how much you can afford so that you can go out house hunting

1 888 332-3188

Today is also a great day to refinance your existing home. Even with a
prepayment penalty you can save thousands of dollars off of your mortgage
by refinancing in todays super low interest rate market. Lock in now for
new lower rate and save money. Call me today youll be glad you did

MEMORIAMS
In Loving Memory of Greg Laycock
May 2, 1950 - June 29, 2012

In Our Hearts
We thought of you with love today.
But that is nothing new.
We thought about you yesterday.
And days before that too.
We think of you in silence.
We often speak your name.
Now all we have is memories.
And your picture in a frame.
Your memory is our keepsake.
With which well never part.
God has you in his keeping.
We have you in our heart...

With all that is going on in the world today the Bank of Canada has lowered its prime lending
rate several times consecuitively. What does this mean for the citizens of Strathmore? Well
now is a great time to buy a new home.
