Your Connection to
Wellness and Disease Prevention
rimary care doctors treat the flu and colds, but they also can help assess the urgency of a medical problem you may be experiencing,
and refer you to a specialist who can treat it. Your relationship with your primary care physician can span decades. Perhaps the most
important role of your primary care provider is the practice of preventive medicine. In addition to providing advice
about wellness issues such as the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and exercising, and making and adopting
other healthy lifestyle habits, your doctor can recommend which screening tests you need to prevent or identify disease.
A good primary care physician manages all aspects of your health care, from routine screening to diagnosing and treating
illnesses, to identifying and addressing your health risks, says Michael Carlucci, MD, an internist practicing in Somerset
and Jamesburg as part of the Saint Peters Physician Associates network. But our most important role is to guide our
patients through an increasingly complex health care system. For this relationship to work, there must be trust that we will
be there and perform well when our patients need us.

Eye Exam
To test your vision and screen for
glaucoma and macular degeneration,
which are often age-related diseases.
Cholesterol
If you have risk factors such as
diabetes, history of heart disease,
tobacco use, high blood pressure,
or a body mass index measurement
of 30 or more, talk to your doctor
about when you need to have your
cholesterol checked.
For Women
Thyroid
A blood test can help to identify an
under- or overactive thyroid, both of
which are very treatable and either
of which can lead to more serious
conditions if left untreated.
Blood Pressure
High blood pressure increases your
chance of getting heart or kidney
disease and for having a stroke.
Mammogram
To idenitify early signs of breast cancer.
Discuss with your doctor how often
you should have one. The American
Cancer Society recommends having
one annually starting at age 40.
Diabetes
If your blood pressure is higher than
135/80, ask your doctor to test you for
diabetes. Diabetes, or high blood sugar,
can cause problems with your heart,
eyes, feet, kidneys, nerves, and other
body parts.
Colonoscopy
Beginning at age 50 and through age
75, get tested for colorectal cancer
every 10 years. If you have a family
history of colorectal cancer, you may
need to be tested before you turn 50.
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
If you are between the ages of 65
and 75 and have smoked 100 or
more cigarettes in your lifetime, you
should have this blood vessel in your
stomach, which can burst without
warning, examined.
Pap Test
This laboratory test helps to identify
risk for developing cervical cancer.
For Men
Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test
Talk to your doctor about when you
should have this screening test for
prostate cancer, which measures the
level of PSA, a protein, in a mans blood.
