AIM
OBJECTIVE
To revive and enhance the the cultural landscape of the region by value addition to the
heritage areas.
To create public spaces for the community and for the promotion of tourism.
To restore and respect the vernacular architecture of the area.
To strengthen the human and water relationship along River Jhelum.
To empower the social and cultural fabric by community capacity building and sensitization.
SCOPE OF STUDY
This project identifies the existing heritage zones lying aong the banks of River Jhelum in
the Dowtown area of Srinagar, Kashmir. It aims at reviving and integrating these areas which
have been completely neglected during the evolution of the Old City. The project focusses on
developing these zones as urban precincts for the local community as well as the tourists; giving
a new tourism brand to Kashmir, which emphasizes on its built and cultural heritage rather than
its natural beauty alone.
This project would emphasize on increasing the community connection with the River, developing
the passage as a vibrant activity route. Old dilapidated bridges which are presently unused can be
consolidated with the existing city fabric. The design solutions would specially focus on community
sensitization by introducing an interpretation center which includes craft development workshops
to hone the skills of local craftsmen living in the area for which Kashmir is known.
