PowerLogicTM Meter Configuration Utility Installation Notes

(Version 2.0)
Use this instruction sheet when you install the PowerLogic Meter
Configuration Utility, version 2.0.

Whats in the PowerLogic Meter

Configuration Utility?

The PowerLogic Meter Configuration Utility (PMCU) is a device setup utility

application. You will use PMCU to configure the onboard setup of
PowerLogic devices over a communications network. With PMCU you can:

add RS485 Serial or Modbus TCP communication connections

perform phasor diagram analysis using the Fundamental Phasors

Diagnostic table

perform a system communication test to verify communication

connection between the computer and the devices in the system

view device, system, and communications diagnostics information using

the Activity Log file

create a backup of the PMCU database, which contains communication

and device configuration information

add devices for onboard configuration

set up and configure onboard device settings like CT/PT ratio, system
type, demand calculations, I/O setup, onboard data logging, onboard
waveform capture, and onboard alarming

PMCU includes an optional feature called Viewing Features. See details

about Viewing Features activation on page 4 of these installation
instructions. With the Viewing Features, you can:

view real-time data in quick tables

view waveforms
view on-board data files
view PowerLogic meter configuration reports
check device status
perform device registry read and write commands

By default, PMCU is a standalone application. It uses its own database to

store device configuration information and communication information.

What PowerLogic Devices Can You Set

Up, Configure, and View in PMCU?

The standard devices installed with PMCU are the PM500, PM700, PM800,
PM9C, CM3000, and CM4000 family of meters. There is an option to install
other device types as well. The optional device types, PM600 and CM2000,
are found in the POWERLOGIC\PMCU\OptionalInstalls folder. That folder
also contains a file called Installing Optional Device Types.txt. See that file
for instructions on installing these device types.

Ensure that the prerequisites have been met (see table below). If all of the
prerequisites are not met, the install program will notify you and will exit the
installation.
NOTE: PMCU will not install on a computer that has any version of System
Manager Software (SMS) or GFX software. If SMS or GFX is installed on
the computer, the PMCU install detects it and stops the install. PMCU will
install on a computer that has ION Enterprise 5.6, Service Pack 1 or higher.

Internet Access
(recommended)

About Microsoft Access

Some internet access is recommended for downloading files

and Viewing Features activation. If no internet access is
available, contact your local Schneider Electric representative
for assistance.

Microsoft Access is an application that is included in some versions of

Microsoft Office. Access is used to create, modify, and view databases. In
PMCU, a version of Access 2000 is used to view PowerLogic Meter
Configuration Reports.
If Microsoft Access 97 (or any version prior to Access 2000) is installed on
the computer, the PMCU install detects it and stops the install.
We recommend you upgrade to Access 2000 before you install PMCU. If this is
not possible, you can install the Access 2000 Runtime version on the same
computer as Access 97. Access Runtime is a version of the Access application
that allows database viewing, but does not allow database creation or database
modification. When Access 2000 Runtime is installed, you can install and use
PMCU. Access 2000 Runtime is a free application, and it is included with the
PMCU package (on the PMCU CD, select Access > setup.exe).
If, when you begin the PMCU install, you see a message about Microsoft
Access 97, follow the instructions in the message to go to the
PowerLogic.com downloads area:
www.powerlogic.com/downloadlist.cfm
You must follow special steps to install two versions of Microsoft Access on
one computer. Following these steps ensures that the Microsoft Access
database files can be opened, used, and saved properly. A .pdf file called
"Dual Access Install" is available from the PowerLogic.com downloads area.
Read this .pdf file for assistance on the subject. If you have any questions or
need additional assistance, contact your local Schneider Electric
representative.

SQL Service Pack 3 Installation

The SQL Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) installation includes the

components for SQL Service Pack 3. If you have already installed SQL,
please be sure that you have installed SQL Service Pack 3. If you still need
to install it, see the Microsoft website for the download.

Launching and Using PMCU

To launch PMCU, click Start > Programs > POWERLOGIC > Meter
Configuration Utility. You will be asked to log on to the application. Enter the
user ID and password that was provided to you.
NOTE: To set up and configure devices, you must have logged on to PMCU
with the master/master login/password.
After the main PMCU window displays, you can begin to use the PMCU
features. For help using PMCU, click Help > PMCU Help.

Activating the Viewing Features

If you do not have internet access, you will need to contact your local
Schneider Electric representative for help in completing activation.
The Viewing Features option requires separate activation. To activate this
feature, click Start > Programs > POWERLOGIC > Activate Viewing &
Feedback.
A Registration and Feedback form screen displays.
Enter the following information:
First Name/Last Name: Type the name of the person who will receive the
confirmation e-mail and activation information.
Company/Country: Type your company name; select your country from the
pull-down list.
Activate Viewing Features: Check this box only when you are activating
your software. If you are sending feedback only, leave this box unchecked.
E-mail Address: Type your e-mail address. This is the address that will
receive instructions for activating the Viewing Features.
Feedback: This is an optional field. Type any comment or suggestion
concerning PMCU and/or the Viewing Features. The information you enter
will enable us to improve the PMCU product. You may visit this website as
often as needed to submit comments or suggestions.
Click Submit to send the activation request and/or feedback. You will be
contacted by return e-mail or by your local Schneider Electric representative
with information about your activation request.

Backing Up the Database

Before you uninstall PMCU, you should first back up the system database.
System backup files are written to the Backup folder in the main PMCU
folder (default: C:\POWERLOGIC\PMCU\Backup). Each backup file
(SMS_System_Data.bak) overwrites the previous file; thus, if you want to
keep the older file, rename or move it before running the backup procedure.
Follow these steps to back up the PMCU system database:
1. With PMCU running, click Tools > System Backup.
2. In response to the prompt asking if you want to continue, click Yes.
The file SMS_System_Data.bak appears in the PMCU > Backup folder.
The message The backup succeeded displays.
