Conditioning for Physical Fitness

Learning Objective
This 36-hour course is designed to help students understand the theoretical and practical
considerations regarding physical fitness and its development. It aims to develop a sound
understanding of training principles and methods of training to enable students to design training
programmes to develop the various components of physical fitness for both individual and groups
of individuals and also athletes in individual and/or team sports.
Content
Introduction to health related and performance related components of physical fitness and the
training principles behind the sound development of those components towards the
achievement of improved physical fitness. Water based activities will also be introduced. Diet
and nutrition will also be looked at with a view of improving performance.

Aerobic and anaerobic fitness training
Flexibility training
Speed, agility and balance training
Strength training
Diet and Nutrition

Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Differentiate and discuss health related and performance (or skill) related components of
physical fitness;
Understand how fitness training principles apply differently to adults and the growing child.
Demonstrate a sound understanding of the different methods of training and principles of
training for both individual and groups of individuals.
Plan and design training sessions to improve the physical fitness of non-athletes and athletes.
Gain a basic understanding of diet and nutrition and how it affects performance

Student Assessment
Students will be assessed on the following;
1 Written test (40%)
2 Performance Tests (30%)
3 Design a Training Programme (30%)
