Interference Alignment

interference channels, where multiple transmit and receive user pairs communicate
using the same radio resources, are a building block of wireless networks. The
interference channel is a good model for communication in cellular networks,
wireless local area networks, and ad-hoc networks. Conventional thinking about the
interference channel is that each user pair has no information about other users in
the network and therefore its optimum strategy is to be greedy and maximize its
own rate.

Interferencemanagementisakeychallengeinthedesignofthecurrentand
futurecellularnetworksinordertosatisfythedemandforhigherdatarates.To
increase the system capacity in multicell and multiuser wireless network
environments, various interference management techniques based on
coordinatedmultipointtransmissionandreceptionhavebeenpresented[13].
Among them, an interference alignment (IA) technique has been recently
highlightedasanefficientcapacityachievinginterferencemanagementscheme
[4].Thebasicideaofinterferencealignmentistoaligntheinterferencesignals
inareduceddimensionalsubspaceateachreceiversothataninterferencefree
orthogonal subspace can be solely allocated for data transmission. To date,
variousinterferencealignmentalgorithmshavebeenproposedandanalyzedin
Xnetwork[57],multipleinputmultipleoutput(MIMO)interferencenetwork
[810],andcellularnetwork[1116].
In the multicell MIMO Gaussian interfering broadcast channels (MIMO
IFBC),eachbasestation(BS)supportsmultipleuserswithinitscellandso
thereexisttwokindsofinterference,namely,interuserinterference(IUI)and
intercell interference (ICI). To mitigate both IUI and ICI simultaneously, a
simplezeroforcing(ZF)schemehasbeenproposedfortwocellMIMOIFBC
[11].ThisZFschemeachievesanumberofdegreesoffreedom(DoF)ofwhen
therearetwoBSswithtransmitantennasanduserswithreceiveantennasin
eachcell.Moreover,aprecodingschemecalledsubspaceinterferencealignment

fortwocellMIMOIFBChasbeenproposed[13].ThissubspaceIAconsistsof
twocascadedprecoders.ThefirstprecoderputstheICIvectorsintoafinite
multidimensionalsubspaceandthesecondprecodermakestheIUIvectorslie
onthesubspacespannedbytheICIvectors.Thisincreasesthedimensionof
subspaceforthedesiredsignalvectors,especiallyinthecaseofasymmetric
antennaconfiguration.TherearefurtherresultsontheachievableDoFobtained
byIAinthetwocellcase[1416].Authorsin[14]showedthattheDoFper
cell is achieved asby assuming time or frequency extension in twocell
multipleinputsingleoutput(MISO)IFBC.Authorsin[16]provedthatDoF
percellcanbeachievedwhenandintwocelluserMIMOIFBC.Authorsin
[15]presentedtheoptimalityofIAbyprovidingatightDoFouterboundinthe
twocellMIMOnetwork.Furthermore,anIAsolutioninthethreecellcasehas
been proposed [12]. This IA algorithm jointly designs transmit and receive
beamforming matrices based on user cooperation. Recently, the interference
channelalignmentschemehasbeenpresented[17]andbecomesthebasisfor
thisstudy.
Thepreviousstudieshavemainlyconsideredtwoorthreecellcaseandthereis
still no closedform solution for a general multicellcase. In this paper, we
proposeanewIAschemeforageneralcellanduserMIMOIFBCscenario.
TheproposedIAschemealignsmultipleICIsintoasmalldimensionalsubspace
throughacooperativereceivebeamformingandcancelsboththeICIandIUI
simultaneouslythroughatransmitbeamforming.Wecharacterizethefeasibility
conditionfortheproposedIAtoachieveatotalDoFofintermsofthenumbers
of transmit antennas and receive antennas. Then, we derive the maximum
numberofDoFachievedbytheproposedIAbyfindinganoptimaldimension
ofICIalignmentsubspaceforagivenantennaconfiguration
