SYSTEMS NAVIGATOR
The Ottawa Inuit Childrens Centre (OICC) is a multi service non-profit
organization serving Inuit children and youth and their families. The Ottawa Inuit
Children's Centre is dedicated to providing cultural, educational, and support
services in a caring, respectful and collaborative environment that fosters strong
and proud Inuit children and families.
Position:

Systems Navigator

Hours:

Full-time term position 40 hrs per week

Salary Range:

$45,000 - $55,000 gross annual salary

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Director of Youth Programs, the Systems Navigator
provides screening, assessment, referrals and advocacy for families who have
youth experiencing addictions and/or mental health challenges. The Systems
Navigator will help families negotiate the health system, organize their care,
overcome barriers and ensure seamless transition from one service to another
and continuity of care for each individual.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Client Care, including:
o Provide case management to youth and their families in order to
help them navigate and understand the system and ensure that
they are receiving services they need;
o Conduct screening and brief assessment in both individual and
group formats using common tools and protocols;
o Working with clients and their families, create a navigation strategy
that will lead to quality of service, maximize collaboration, and
streamline and integrate services;
o Make referrals to addictions services, mental health services, and
other services as required;
o Coordinate and implement Aboriginal Integrative Plan of Care (IPC)
at OICC;

o Promote Inuit beliefs, values and traditions that enhance health


Promote early identification through the use of appropriate mental health
screening tools and assist OICC staff in identifying early signs of mental
health issues for children and youth;
Engage in supportive counselling and support as children/youth require,
using a balance of approaches to meet individual needs, e.g. activities,
one-on-ones, referrals;
Work in collaboration with other professionals in addressing mental health
issues for children/youth;
Coordinate and deliver parental and family support services including
appointment accompaniment, home visits, referrals, crisis intervention,
supportive counselling and assistance with CAS processes and protocols;
Maintain effective administrative systems;
Actively represent OICC at meetings, presentations and conferences with
stakeholders including partner agencies, funders and government;
Engage with various agencies and stakeholders to strengthen mental
health programs and services;
Establish relationships that benefit the delivery of mental health programs
and services;
Adhere to and promote the mandate and mission of the OICC

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS


Professional diploma or degree in Social Work or related field of study
Minimum of three years of experience providing mental health services to
children and youth
Experience in leading presentations, facilitating meetings, navigating the
mental health system and advocating at high levels with partners e.g.
hospitals, youth services, police etc.
Mental Health First Aid and ASSIST training considered assets
Experience working with families involved with Childrens Aid Society Ottawa
Experience working with Inuit or Aboriginal communities
Inuit descent preferred
Fluency in Inuktitut would be an asset
Knowledge of the needs of Inuit children and families
Knowledge of Inuit and non-Inuit community services and supports
Knowledge of mental health supports and services for children and youth in
Ottawa
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
Ability to operate computer systems and relevant software
Strong organizational, program planning, evaluation, fiscal management and
problem-solving skills
