DORMITION OF
ST ANNA, MOTHER
OF OUR
OF
THEOTOKOS
St Anna is the Righteous Mother of our Ever Blessed Lady Theotokos, and therefore,
the Grandmother of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ according to His
Incarnation.
St Anna was one of the daughters of Matthan, a Judean Priest of the Levite Tribe,
as was St Aaron, the ancient High Priest.
St Anna had two sisters.
Her sister, Mary, resided in Bethlehem with her husband and they had a
daughter, Salome, who married St Joseph the Betrothed and produced seven
children: St James, St Jude, St Simon, St Joses, (who became Holy Apostles)
and St Salome, Esther, and a third daughter whose name is unclear: Martha,
Lydia, Thamar or Assia.
One of their daughters, St Salome, was the mother of two Holy Apostles - St James
the Lesser and St John the Beloved Apostle and Theologian - and she was also
one of the Holy Myrrhbearers who accompanied our Lady Theotokos.
The eldest son of St Joseph and Salome (Mathan), St James, was devoted to God
and to Christ, having watched over our Lords early years and having
accompanied St Joseph, Theotokos and Christ to Egypt. He became known as
Jame Adelphotheos or Brother to our Lord and was the First Bishop of
Jerusalem who preached the Divine Truth and Reality of our Lord Jesus Christ,
for which he was Martyred.
(These children of St Joseph the Betrothed and his late wife, Salome, became,
according to Old Covenant Law the children of our Ever Blessed Lady
Theotokos who was actually their cousin, under the Protection and
Guardianship of their elderly father, St Joseph.)
St Annas other sister, Zoia also married and lived in Bethlehem, and her daughter
was St Elizabeth, the Righteous Mother of St John the Baptist and Forerunner to
Christ our Lord.
St Anna married St Ioachim, a wealthy and devout man who owned large flocks
of sheep. They resided in Nazareth and were childless for fifty years, until the
Miraculous Conception (according to the Will of God) of their beloved
daughter, the Ever Blessed Virgin Mary future Mother of God (Incarnate).
They lived devoutly and quietly, using only a third of their income for themselves
and giving a third to the poor and a third to the Temple.
St Joachim had done this since he was 15-years-old, and God multiplied his flocks,
so the couple was well provided for.
They longed for a child but remained childless into their old age.
When they were in Jerusalem to offer sacrifice to God, the High Priest, Issachar,
upbraided Joachim, loudly exclaiming: "You are not worthy to offer sacrifice
with those childless hands!" And others who had been Blessed with children
jostled St
Joachim, thrusting him back for being unworthy and thus
disrespected.
In despair, St Joachim consulted the geneological records of the Tribes of Israel
and discovered that every Righteous man in the Nation had been Blessed with
children - except him!
This caused the aged Saint great grief and despair, and he and his beloved wife
left Jerusalemwith heavy hearts, and devoted themselves to Fervent Prayers to
God that He would work in them the same Miracle that He had worked in the
ancient Patriarch, Abraham and his wife, Sarah, granting them a child to
comfort them.
Instead of returning home with his wife, St Joachim took his flocks and went to a
high mountain, refusing to return in such shame.
Meanwhile, St Anna, equally heart-broken, prayed unceasingly in her garden.
Finally, God sent His Holy Archangel Gabried the Heavenly Bearer of Good
Tidings - to each of them, whereupon he announced the forthcoming birth of

"...a daughter Most Blessed, by whom all the Nations of the Earth will be
Blessed, and through whom will come the Salvation of the world."
St Joachim and St Anna most joyfully Vowed to have their child raised in the
Temple as a Holy Vessel of God.
St Gabriel the Archangel then urged St Joachim to return home, where he would
find his wife waiting for him at the city gate and he instructed St Anna to wait
at the city gate to welcome St Joachim. When they saw one another, they were
extremely delighted and embraced in profound gratitude to God.
St Anna conceived shortly thereafter, and in the ninth month gave birth to the
Blessed Virgin Mary.
When the Blessed Child Mary had been weaned at the tender age of three, St
Joachim and St Anna fulfilled their Sacred Vow and, in procession with many
relatives and friends, they carried her to the Temple in Jerusalem, to be
presented to the High Priest, St Zachariah, who then dedicated Her to the Holy
Service of the Lord.
Having completed all the requirements of the Old Covenant Law, St Joachim and
St Anna, left the young, uniquely confident Virgin Mary, together with other
dedicated maidens at the Temple, where they would all be educated,
nurtured and protected while fulfilling various tasks throughout their formative
years. Once these young girls reached puberty, they would leave the Temple
premises in order to marry and to produce the next generation.
During the next seven years, the Righteous St Anna and St Joachim visited their
beloved Daughter as often as possible until they Reposed in the Lord, leaving
her an orphan at the age of ten.
St Joachim lived for 80 years and Anna for 79 years and they both entered into the
Eternal Kingdom of God before Her Betrothal to Her elderly uncle, and the
Great Annunciation of Archangel Gabriel concerning the Incarnation of the
Eternal Word and Son of God.
After the Repose of St Joachim, St Anna moved from Nazareth to Jerusalem and
resided near to the Great Temple, having purchased two properties one at
the Gates of Gethsemane, and the other in the Valley of Josaphat, where she
had a tomb excavated for the member of her family and where she and her
dear husband and later, their precious Daughter were buried.
Years later our Lord Jesus Christ often went to the property at the Garden of
Gethsemane to quietly pray and communicate with God and there His Great
Holy Passion would begin.
During the reign of St Justinian the Emperor (527-565), a church was built in
honour of St Anna at Deftera and after St Anna had appeared in a Holy
Vision to his pregnant wife, Emperor Justinian II (685-695; 705-711) restored her
church, and her body and maphorion (veil) were transferred to
Constantinople.
May the memory of St Anna, the Righteou Mother of our Ever Blessed Lady
Theotokos and the Grandmother According to the Flesh of our Lord Jesus
Christ be Eternal and may she constantly Intercede with God for the Salvation
of our immortal soul.
