Harvey Milk and his fight against society

People, religions, governors have not been accepted the different condition
of some people referring to sexual orientation. Although in the present there are
many people who is opened mind or is opened to experiment new things,
homosexuality still being a taboo subject. LGBT are the acronym of the four
movements which are very common inside the gay movement, Lesbians, Gay,
Bisexual and Transsexual. This acronym is used to emphasize cultures bases in
sexuality or sex changes and it is applied to anyone who is not heterosexual. At the
end of the 70s began many manifestations which fight for the sexual movement.
One of the most important calls was the activist movement header by Harvey Milk.
Conservative people always have been fight against all these gay movements and
this was the reason that made that Harvey Milk lost her life. Its my duty to inform
you that both Mayor Moscone and Supervisor Milk have been shot and killed, that
was the phrase that end with the story and life of a man who fight for his rights as a
gay man and politician. Harvey Milk was born on May 22nd, 1930 and he was not
open about his homosexuality when he was young but he did it when he was
around 40 years old.
My name is Harvey Milk is a story based on a true story, a drama where is
include the political subject, and tell us about an activist American gay man who
fight for the rights of homosexual people. The movie begins when Milk is about to
turn 40 years old. He met a young gay and they decided to move to San Francisco
specifically to Castro hoping that people accepted their condition as a couple.
While time is passing, he thought about a change in peoples mind so he tries to
reach a charge as a supervisor of Castro neighborhood. After many unsuccessful
political campaigns between 1973 and 1975, in 1976 he was elected as the new
supervisor, and his victory made that he was the first gay member for a public
charge in the United States. While he was in the office, he made a new friend who
is Dan White, a conservative politician, but Milk was betrayed by him because Milk
was not helped him in a project. This event made that White votes against the

homosexual rights proposed by Milk and after many disputes with him Milk and
Mayor Moscone were killed by his hands. The murder of Milk brought that politics
in San Francisco and the political system in California changed.
Inasmuch as Harvey Milk was the first homosexual politician, he was
consecrated as one of the most important activists in the homosexual liberation
history. Milk tried for many years to change the conservative peoples mind and
although he was not succeed at the beginning, after 70s the movement took power
and it was possible to show the gay community political power. He was the
precursor of the activist movement called LGBT in United States and around the
world. Considering discrimination which is produced around the world about sexual
option or different option of life, people emit many social prejudices or prejudices
according to imposed laws by the human being or religions, in respect to accept
those people by its social, religious, economic, and cultural condition, for the value
that they have in the society in which they live and this referred to the political
thinking that should exist in which definitely in political power exists legislations in
order to accept the people gay existence. An example of this is the lamentable
murder of Claudio Zamudio that made that the government and the parliament
dictated the Zamudio Law which intends to protect the gay movement, however it
still existing lights which born of the same religion or political powers that even if
they are respecting the law, they do not accepted at all. The Harvey Milks murder it
was not in vain, because that made that many gay movements flourish around the
world and it has allowed that the constitution is considered (for example: gay
marriage). Therefore, Harvey Milk is an important precedent for gay people even
more, it born more and more approval thinking according to this subject.
The movie is developed in the 70s when the gay movement was considered
as a scar of the world, where machism, as a thought, had too much power in
relation to accept that two persons of the same sex could love or could construct a
family (situation that even in the present days it does not allowed to people with
this condition, for example: adopting a child to construct a family) and people feel a
type of rejection about this subject. Most of the people were Christians and

conservators so, in those years the word gay was not a center of discussion, and
moreover, it was a taboo subject. These movements emerged in United States and
Europe where young people used no violent acts to protest for what they want. The
eight years period which the movie covers shows that homosexuality is a sickness
or a sin. As I said before in the 70s there was a limited understanding about
homosexuality. People who assumed their sexuality and want to have some place
as a refuge like a church were stripped and discriminated. If in that decade in
United States discrimination existed, ignoring gay movements, we have to make a
reflection with respect to not developed countries where religion and politics were
more conservative.
In point of fact, the sacrifice or to had become in a martyr as a result of
disallowing these gay movements and by considering these people as a distinct
race who sinned against the moral, against the human being moral principles that
supposedly they were considered as a normal people, provoke that, in the world,
gay movements begin to venture or to show itself more opened, social

and

political groups were created which start to affect in the local authorities, religious
clergy and the same society thought, such that to change the humanity thought
which allows that it stop politically the legislative powers in order to legislate in
favor of these movements. Chile is not an exception and I repeat, as a proof of this,
it there exists the Zamudio Law which born to the same criminal form when a group
of young people that for being not agree with these movements they may even
commit horrible crimes. Other movement inside their sick thoughts which do not
approve gay people, are neo-Nazis, that are people who are searching perfection
in human race, both physical and social and political (a thing which it is not exist
and it never will exist). In Chile, although in 70s, 80s and 90s it was very difficult
that gay movements were considered, politicians realized that the gay movement is
growing considerately, even, it should be that gay people are capable to choose a
president, allowing them to legist even more in favor of these movements. These
phenomena created inside of these movements provoke a distinct thought and
although the social, political and religious clases are not accepted at all, each day
more and more politician think about legisting in favor of gay marriage in Chile.

This is not going to be immediately, but according the time is passing, this topic
should be considered as well as many other movements, even religious
movements that today are being openly considered as a normal part of our society.
No doubt Harvey Millk gave everything to fight for the gay community rights
and he will be remembered for that, Harvey Milk believed that one person could
make a difference in other people and his legacy continues inspiring and gives
hope to people in his struggle for justice. In present days there is a growing
number of counties which have enacted civil rights protections for gay people,
more and more gay people are postulating for political offices and they are elected.
The Milks fight in his country it was not easy, but on the basis of fighting for their
rights, he got what he want. The years will pass and Milk still being as an example
of a leader. Unfortunately he had to paid dearly but his death left a legacy, that was
what we have now, a legacy that remember us every day that anyone is weird, just
different, and this should be not a reason to discriminate.
