otherpeopledidn't."Astheabsolutebossofhisbands,includingthelegendarylineupsoftheMothersof
Invention,Zappafuseddoowop,urbanblues,bigbandjazzandorchestralmodernismwithanironhand.
Asaguitarist,hedrewfromallofthosesources,thenimprovisedwithafuriousandgenuinedelight.His
soloingon"WilliethePimp,"on1969'sHotRats,isanextendedstudiopartyofgreasydistortion,

conducting,"Anastasiorecalled.Butwhenhepickeduphisguitarforasolo,"hewascompletelyin

sixstringfury.Hisshowmanship,completewithmidsolostrollsthroughthe
