ABSTRACT
A condensed version of the entire paper; summarizes the four essential aspects of the paper,
namely, purpose of the experiment, results (% yield, % purity, etc.), significance of the study, and major
conclusions. It should give one an idea of the scope of the study. It includes a very briefsummary of the
major steps/techniques used in the experiment. Do not include too much background information. No
detailed procedures and sources of errors.Typically, 100-200 words.

Solution Preparation

flask to collect any of the remaining solution

left in the beaker. The solution in the
volumetric flask is then diluted to mark,
covered and mixed thoroughly. This solution
will serve as the primary standard for the
experiment. 3 10.00mL aliquots of this
solution was taken and each transferred to a
250mL erlenmeyer flask. The flasks were
then labeled properly. Into each flask, 20mL
distliled water, 1.0g KI, and 10mL of 0.5M
H2SO4 was added strictly in that order. The
solution was then titrated immediately with
Na2S2O3 until a pale yellow color is obtained.
1.0mL of freshly prepared starch solution is
then added. The titration is continued until
the solution turned colorless. This was
repeated for the other 2 flasks.

Standardization of Na2S2O3

Analysis of Water Sample

0.15g of KIO3, the primary standard,

was placed in a 50mL beaker. It was then
dissolved in 50mL of distilled water and then
transferred to a 100mL volumetric flask. The
beaker was washed with distilled water and
the washings transferred to the volumetric

An empty glass bottle was prepared

by covering it with aluminum foil to make
sure no light enters inside. The bottle was
then filled to the brim with the pond water
sample making sure that there are no bubbles
inside. It was then covered from under the
1

pond surface, then covered with additional

aluminum foil.
0.5mL of MnSO4 solution was added
then strictly followed by 0.5mL of NaOH with
KI and NaN2 solution using a syringe, making
sure that no bubbles enter the sample while
the reagents are added. The bottle is then
closed and shaked very thorougly. The cover
is then slowly removed and 2.0mL of
concentrated H3PO4 is added making sure the
pipette was just below the surface. The bottle
was covered, shaked thoroughly and set aside
for 10 minutes. 50mL aliquot of the solution
was taken transferred to a 250mL erlenmeyer
flask. The solution was then titrated with
sodium thiosulfate until pale yellow color was
observed. 1.0mL of fresh starch solution is
added and titration was continued until the
solution turns colorless. This analysis was
done in triplicate.

acid was added first before the potassium

iodide, it will result into the formation of iodic
acid which is shown by the following
reaction:
IO3- + H+ HIO3
(3)
This will decrease the volume of
sodium thiosulfate because it will react with
less iodine.
Organizes data into tables, figures,

is
appropriate)
Should provide labels with short
caption for each tables, figures,
graphs, etc.
Label fortables should be on top of the
table while label for figures should be
below the figure

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

20mL of distilled water, 1.0g KI and

10mL of 0.5M H2SO4 was added to each of the
3 flasks strictly in that order which results in
the following reaction:
IO3- + 8I- + 6H+ 3I3- + 3H2O

(1)

Sulfuric acid was added because the

reaction with iodate needs an acidic
environment. The triiodide will then
decompose shown by the following equation:
I3- I- + I2

(2)

Sodium thiosulfate is then added until

the solution turns into a pale yellow color.
1% starch solution indicator is added which
will make the solution turn blue. The titration
is continued until the solution turns colorless.
This reaction is shown by:
I2 + 2S2O32- 2I- + S4O62The order of addition of the three
reagents is important because if the sulfuric

Discussion should include the following:
- Purpose of each reagents
- Rationalization of method (purpose of
each major techniques in the
methodology)
- Techniques used to increase the
accuracy and precision of the method
- Summary of data treatment done
- Interpretation of results (What is its
significance? Are your results precise
or accurate?)
- Compare expected results with those
obtained, account for any difference

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary of important results (should
answer: so what)
Discuss degree of success or failure of
the experiment
If necessary and possible, include
suggestions for improvement ( on the
method used, NOT on the course or
how it is being handled)
Be direct in stating conclusion and
recommendation
(dont
include
background info)
