Topic 1 : Introduction to guidance and counselling


People nowadays mostly did not know about guidance and counselling. They just
know that counselling just give an advice to who have a problem only and its strongly wrong.
Guidance and counselling is a helping profession, not just for problematic student or person
but guidance and counselling also help a person who have presently experiencing difficulty,
its a remedial or rehabilitative help for them. Guidance and counselling also give a preventive
help. This profession circumvent a problem and if possible also forestall difficulties which
may arise in the future. They will guide a person to be a better person.
Guidance and counselling also one of profession to help a individual plan. For
example, a person get a two offer to continue his/her study but they did not know how choose
and what the best for them, so guidance and counselling profession can give them some
motivation, look at the result and compare what is suitable for them. It will enable these
individual to discover and develop their potential.
In guidance and counselling have the distinction and similarities between advise,
guidance , counselling and psychotherapy. For advise, its only an opinion or recommendation
for some individual. Advise also can be given by anyone and can be at any place, its also just
an ideas that a person can follow to do something they want and its not mandatory which is
not wrong is a person just ignore the opinion. For guidance, its given to a person or group to
help them along. Guidance focuses on helping people or individual choose what the right
path for them and provide information also show them something new. In process of
guidance, the problem will be listened carefully and ready to made a solution.
Conselling is not giving opinion, instruction or advise. Counselling is a type of talking
therapy that allows a person to talk about their problems and .A counsellor is trained to listen
with empathy by putting themselves in your shoes. They can help you deal with any negative
thoughts and feelings you have.

Counselling also can be used to help with many different mental health conditions,
including depression, anxiety, long-term illnesses, eating disorders, drug misuse and so on.
Counselling aims to help you deal with and overcome issues that are causing emotional pain

or making you feel uncomfortable. It can provide a safe and regular space for you to talk and
explore difficult feelings. The counsellor is there to support you and respect your views.
They won't usually give advice, but will help you find your own insights into and
understanding of your problems. During your counselling sessions, you'll be encouraged to
express your feelings and emotions. By discussing your concerns with you, the counsellor
can help you gain a better understanding of your feelings and thought processes, as well as
identifying ways of finding your own solutions to problems also able to help you reach a
positive solution.

A good counsellor will focus on you and listen without judging or critici abouty you.
They may help you find out about how you could deal with your problems, but they shouldn't
tell you what to do. For counselling to be effective, you need to build a trusting and safe
relationship with your counsellor. If you feel that you and your counsellor aren't getting on, or
that you're not getting the most out of your sessions, you should discuss this with them, or
you can look for another counsellor.

For the last is Psychotherapy. It is traditionally focuses on serious problems, internal


and personal issues also conflicts. The term psychotherapist is generally used by psychiatrist
and clinical psychologist.
The similarities in counselling and psychotherapy prosesses or stage is develorapport
means relationship, exploration of self, problem solving, decision making, plan of action and
so on. Two criteria to be considered when making distinction between psychotherapy and
counselling is psychotherapy involves longterm relationship and focuses on reconstructive
change and usually at residential treatment facilities such a mental hospital. For counselling,
its tend to be a short term and only focuses on resolution of developmental and situational
problems and usually at non residential building like school or community agencies. Goal in
counselling is to help individual to be a better person and for psychotherapy is more likely to
change a basic character structure.
In conclusion, advise, guidance, counselling and psychotherapy have their own skill,
theory and way to help an individual. For me counselling is needed for every person because

counselling not only help you but counselling also can guide you to be a better person, to
always be positive and always find a right way to create a beautiful life.
