Software Trial Period & L-series Access Device Registration

L-series vSpace 4.5.1 implements 30-day trial mode.
Trial Mode includes:
60-minute session limits for unregistered L-series access devices

At the time limit, users are given a 60-second notification followed by

session logout any unsaved documents will be lost

A license must be written to the access device to move it out of trial

mode.

All L-series access devices must be registered under one of the new
vSpace release (even if registered before with an older release)

Background registration simplifies registering L-series access devices

This license allows the access devices to connect to other vSpace

hosts in the environment without additional registrations

If not registered within 30 days, vSpace times out and will not
accept connections from L-series access devices

Registration Wizard can still run to allow this host to register

L-series Access Device Background Registration

New background registration option can perform

auto-registration of L-series access devices
Option is available after the vSpace host software has
been registered
Background registration can be turned while the
registration wizard registers the host software or it can
be enabled later from the Admin Console
Background registration requires an active internet
connection, but it eliminates need to re-run registration
wizard when adding new L-series access devices
Offline registration via the Registration Wizard is used if
an Internet connection is not available (see Appendix)

Best Practice: Updating an existing vSpace installation

1.

Make sure all hosts on subnet are using vSpace 4.4.7, 4.5.1, or Later

2.
3.
4.
5.

Power down the L-series access devices

Uninstall previous version of vSpace from host
Install 4.5.1 on Host PC (and reboot as requested)
Run vSpace registration wizard to register software on the host

6.

Older vSpace hosts, should be placed on a separate subnet

Do NOT enable background registration until later

Power-up a limited number of devices to test in trial mode

Power cycling the access devices dynamically loads new firmware

Test a few access devices under 1-hour trial mode to make sure the Lseries access devices have their typical behavior.

7.
8.
9.

Once you have run the test, update the full environment
From the vSpace Admin Console enable background registration
Permanently update access device firmware using updateme process
(see Appendix)
10. Each L-series device should display connection screen, and once
connected, each access device will auto-register in the background
4

Best Practice: Creating a new vSpace installation

If you have never installed a vSpace environment before please consult the
L-series User Guide.

1.

Ensure all hosts on subnet have vSpace 4.4.7, 4.5.1, or Later installed

2.
3.

Install vSpace 4.5.1 on Host PC (and reboot as requested)

Run the vSpace registration wizard to register vSpace on the host

4.

5.
6.

Older vSpace hosts, should be placed on a separate subnet

Enable background registration (leave wizards check box as defaulted)

Unpack and connect any new L-series access devices and update their
firmware using the updateme process (see Appendix)
Set up unique User Accounts, if not already created during vSpace
install process, and ensure each is added to Windows remote users
group
Each L-series device should offer a vSpace connection screen, and
once connected, each access device will auto-register in the
background

Registration Release Notes

Online vs Offline Registration

Online registration can be performed within the
registration wizard if there is an active connection of the
internet via port 80 or 3630
Ping register.ncomputing.com to verify that the registration
server is available through the local network

Offline registration process:

Encrypted registration file is created on the L-series vSpace host

L-series devices must be connected to active session for the

Registration Wizard to include them in the registration file

Customer emails registration file to registration@ncomputing.com

Automated email system returns license file to customer

A single file contains multiple access device licenses

Customer reruns Registration Wizard on originating vSpace host

and provides the returned license file as input to the wizard

L-series Access Device Firmware Loading

vSpace 4.5.1 requires version 14573 or higher firmware
L-series devices dynamically load new firmware when power cycled
Dynamically loaded firmware is volatile and power-cycled units revert to
default firmware when newer firmware is not found on a boot server
Permanent firmware update is not required if the L-series access
device always loads the new firmware from a boot server, but
If the desired vSpace host is on another subnet, the firmware wont
dynamically load across subnets
Updating one vSpace host on a subnet will cause that hosts NEW firmware
to load onto ALL power-cycled L-series access devices on subnet

Firmware on those devices then cannot connect to vSpace older than 4.4.7

Short power interruptions can cause incorrect firmware loads

L-series access devices power-up in a few seconds and load default firmware
because the vSpace host takes much longer to recover from a power outage

NComputing recommends performing the updateme process to

permanently upgrade the default L-series access device firmware

Updating L-series Access Device Firmware

Run updateme procedure:
To PERMANENTLY update firmware

Update process CANNOT be reversed (i.e. you cant

downgrade) so an updated L-series device will run
only with vSpace releases > 4.4.7

Updateme Process is detailed in Users Guide

Procedure = Options Setup Update

Select the "Update" tab in the Options Menu of

the device and click the "Update" button. Enter
"updateme" (without the quotes) when the
access device screen asks for a password
Note: DO NOT turn off the access device
during the firmware update, it may become
non-functional.
After firmware update is complete, reset the
access device by power-cycling it.
