Energy balance of AD
(Specifications per ton of MSW organic material)

’ Biogas production: 120 – 150 mN3/t

’ CH4: 55 – 70 Vol.-%
’ Biogas energy content: 700 – 900 kWh/t
’ Electricity production
(Co-generation): 250 – 360 kWh/t
’ Electricity consumption: 80 – 125 kWh/t

AD plants work energy self-sufficient with a high surplus

of electric and thermal energy.

Current digestion capacities in european countries

’ The following overview considers AD plants for the organic

fraction of MSW and BW which are under construction or in
operation in western european countries

’ Sources of informations:

- Technology suppliers
- Plant operators
- General technical literature

’ AD plays at the moment a minor role in new eastern EU countries

therefore no detailled investigation was made

’ Not considered co-digestion plants (manure, biowaste)

Summary

’ AD (especially wet system) is a flexible technology for different types of

organic material
’ AD systems produce renewable energy from waste and can be operated
energy self-sufficient
’ AD is a contribution to substitute fossil energy sources and to reduce
CO2- emissions
’ Biogas can be used to produce different types of energy (electricity, heat,
fuel)
’ High quality compost is produced from biowaste AD plants
’ Landfill directive: Mass reduction for disposal of organic material
’ Reduction of landfill emissions (gas, leakage water)
’ AD is a long experienced and well proven technology to treat organic
waste
