From the Pastor

HAPPY FATHERS DAY to all our fathers! Particularly at this time where traditional
marriage and family structures are challenged and threatened, a celebration recognizing
the role and value of the male father is very important. Also, God has commanded us to
honor our father and mother. Just as we honor our mothers, equally our earthly fathers
deserve to be honored and recognized as well! With the fourth of the Ten
Commandments, I would like to remind you of a passage from the Book of Sirach: those
who take care of their father when they are old are storing riches in heaven God bless
our fathers! Those whose fathers have already gone ahead of us (like mine), this day is
certainly a day of remembrance of their loving presence. May they rest in peace! And for
all our fathers who are still with us, may they experience the love and respect of their
children and may the grace of God keep them strong and guide them on the right path
always!
In this weeks issue of the Catholic Advance, Bishop Kemme is writing a letter to all of us.
The Supreme Court will likely rule on the issue of the states authority to legalize same
sex domestic partnerships by the end of JuneI join the many in our episcopal
conference in fearing the worst, namely that the Supreme Court will side in favor of the
legal status of same sex domestic partnerships. Such a ruling will have profound
consequences in our country that will go far beyond what most of us can even predict A
ruling in favor of the states authority to legalize same sex domestic partnerships will not
alter in any way the Churchs consistent teaching on the sanctity of marriage between one
man and one woman. This has been and will always be the Churchs unambiguous
teaching. A supreme court composed of nine persons may say what it wants and impose
such things as the law of the land, but that will not change what we teachthe Supreme
Court has been wrong in the past. Kindly watch for this next issue and I encourage you
to read and reflect on the bishops letter, and to include this in your prayers, especially for
our fathers and mothers and families.
As we also celebrate Fathers Day, I am reflecting on the spiritual fatherhood that God has
given me as a priest! Every time I see the couples whose marriages I have presided over,
every child I have baptized and is fast growing up, every child whose first communion and
first reconciliation I have administered, really confirmed my identity I am your father
spiritually! A gift God has given not only to me personally but to our entire Catholic
community! Thank you all for accepting me as God has sent me to you! Thanks be to
God for the gift of the priesthood!
Thank you also to all who helped our Totus Tuus: Paula Sevart for putting all this
together, all the families that sponsored the meals, to all children for joining in this
summer activity including a few from Arma, and to all who joined us for the potluck last
Wednesday! God bless you all!

whether it be your dad or your priest. This is an awesome task,

just ask any fatheryour pastor or any flesh and blood dad.
After all, we are men, imperfect and weak, but we must try to
point the way to our children. Dads provide not just material
needs like food on the table and clothes for our backs, but they
give us our spiritual needs in their prayer and their work. Never
underestimate the strength of example. Can you recall your
dad at times in his life when he was on his knees praying or
sitting in his recliner with his eyes straight ahead and the TV
wasnt on! What was he doing? Some have told me that their
dad never missed saying grace at each meal. Just remember,
what you do does not go unnoticed by your family or your
parish.
When a grade school class was asked to draw a picture of
God, it was uncanny how the number of youngsters had drawn
a picture of their Dad, telling the teacher, I couldnt decide
what God looked like, so I made a picture of my dad.
Good fathers are wonderful people. If you amount to
anything, its probably because you were, like me, one of those
kids lucky enough to have a good dad. Perhaps thats what is
wrong with our nation todaytoo many homes with single
mothers bearing most of the child raising responsibilities and
without a dad to model good male behavior. Many of us had
good Dads who taught us well and we obeyed them, mainly
because we didnt want to disappoint. In many of todays
homes, the kids run wild and make their own decisions because
theres no one at home who would be disappointed. So, if your
kids amount to anything, its likely that youre a good dad, too.
Happy Fathers Day!

- Marcel Normand

Why do we call him Dad or Father? Why do we call our

priest Father? No doubt, it has its origins from religious
tradition for it is the office of the Father to Point to God,
