Chapter 12 Study guide

Chapter 12: Patterns of Inheritance

1. Mendel
a. What type of inheritance did he study
b. Laws that he helped to discover
i.
Law of independent assortment
ii.
Law of segregation
c. For each Law, state its meaning and how it affects inheritance
2. Types of inheritance
a. Dominant/Recessive
b. Co-dominance
c. Intermediate/incomplete dominance
d. Multiple alleles (i.e. blood type)
e. Polygenic
f. Pleiotrophy
g. Environmental influences
h. Sex-linked disorders/diseases
i. Autosomal dominant disorders/diseases
j. Autosomal recessive disorders/diseases
k. problems due to nondisjuction (specifically with autosomal diseases)
For all of the above inheritance patterns, you should know the following:
a. An example of that type of inheritance pattern.
b. Be able to complete a monohybrid & a dihybrid cross with that type of inheritance pattern
c. Be able to calculate % of offspring with traits/without traits +/or carriers for that trait.
3. Pedigrees
a. What is a pedigree?
b. Why are they used?
c. Be able to complete a sample pedigree AND calculate the probability of offspring +/or
parents in the pedigree would have/carry/would not have a disease or disorder.
4. Terminology
a. All bold words in chapter you should feel comfortable with (i.e. locus, dominant,
recessive, linkage, P generation, etc)
Be able to compare/contrast all sorts of items: (these are just a few samples)
Co-dominance vs. intermediate inheritance
Sex-linked diseases vs. autosomal dominant disorders/diseases
Pleiotrophy vs. polygenic
Genotype vs. phenotype
