Maintenance
You may cause an electric shock, fire, or damage the machine if you ignore any of
these safety precautions.
Choosing a
location
Do not place the machine close to flammable solvents such as alcohol or thinners.
Power supply
Never attempt to plug in or unplug the machine from the power supply when your
hands are wet.
Always push the plug all the way into the power outlet.
Never damage, modify, stretch or excessively bend or twist the power cord. Do not
place heavy objects on the power cord.
Never plug the machine into a power socket that is shared with other equipment
(extension lead/cord, 2- or 3-way adapter, etc.).
Never use the machine if the power cord is bundled or knotted.
If you detect smoke, unusual smells or strange noises around the machine,
immediately unplug the machine at the power supply and call for service.
Periodically, unplug the machine and use a dry cloth to wipe off any dust or dirt
collected on the plug and the power outlet.
If the machine is placed at a location exposed to a lot of dust, smoke, or high
humidity, the dust collected on the plug absorbs moisture and may cause insulation
failure and fire.
If you hear thunder, disconnect the power supply of the machine and refrain from
using it.
Leaving the machine plugged in may cause fire, electric shock, or damage to the
machine, depending on the thunderstorm.
Never use a power supply source other than the one rated for the machine in the
country of where you purchased the machine.
AC 100-240 V, 50/60 Hz
Cleaning the
machine
Use a damp cloth to clean the machine. Never use flammable solvents such as
alcohol, benzene or thinners.
If flammable solvents come in contact with electrical components inside the
machine, it could cause a fire or electric shock.
Always unplug the machine from the power outlet before cleaning the machine.
If you accidentally switch the machine on while cleaning it, you could injure yourself
or damage the machine.
Maintaining the
machine
Working around
the machine
You may cause injury or damage the machine if you ignore any of these safety
precautions.
Choosing a
location
Do not install the machine in a location that is unstable or subject to excessive vibration.
Do not install the machine in locations that are very humid or dusty, in direct sunlight,
outdoors, or close to a heating source.
To avoid the risk of fire or electric shocks, install the machine in a location with an
ambient temperature range of 15C to 27.5C (59F to 81.5F) and humidity of 20%
to 80% (condensation free).
Do not place the machine on a thick rug or carpet.
Do not place the machine with its back attached to the wall.
Power supply Ensure that the area around the power outlet is kept clear at all times so you can easily
unplug the power cord if necessary.
Never remove the plug by pulling on the cord.
Do not use an extension lead/cord.
Working
around the
machine
FINE
Cartridge
For safety reasons, store FINE Cartridge out of the reach of small children.
If a child ingests any ink, consult a doctor immediately.
Do not shake FINE Cartridge.
Ink may leak out and stain clothing or the surrounding area.
Never touch the electrical contacts on a FINE Cartridge after printing. The metal parts
may be very hot and couldcause burns.
Do not throw FINE Cartridge into fire.

Power supply unit
Elements on driver ICs, etc., on PCBs (in particular, ICs with heatsinks)
FINE Cartridge aluminum plate
3-2-3 Fire
It is dangerous to throw lithium batteries and parts and components containing flammable
substances, such as cartridges, etc., into fire. Such parts and components must be disposed of in
accordance with local laws and regulations.
3-2-4 Ignition
When using solvents such as alcohol, etc., while conducting service, there is a danger of fire
igniting from heat from internal circuitry and from sparks. Before using any such solvents, be sure
to switch off the power and allow time for high temperature parts to cool down. Make sure that
there is sufficient ventilation when working with solvents.
For service conducted on the user's premises, etc., where such countermeasure materials are not
available, the following countermeasures may be employed.
z
z
z
z
Use anti-static bags for the storage and carrying of PCBs and electrical elements.
Avoid silk and polyester clothing and leather-soled shoes, favoring instead cotton clothes
and rubber-soled shoes.
Avoid working in a carpeted area.
Before work, touch the grounded earth terminals of the main unit in order to discharge any
static electricity.
Use a wrist-strap and earth the metal parts of the main unit.
(Use 1M resistance-integrated current control type.)
PCBs and electrical elements must be lifted by holding the edges and avoid direct contact
with terminals.
Electric shock during the service
Wear an earth-connected equipment [e.g., wrist-strap (1M resistance-integrated
current control type)] if the machine is in current carrying condition during the
service.

4-1 Action in the Event of Abnormality (All Clear)
In the event of extreme noise or shock, etc., in very rare cases, the display may go out, and all the
buttons become inoperable. In that case, perform an All Clear. This operation returns all values
and settings to their default settings. The waste ink counter and printer backup data are not cleared
in this operation. Save the needed backup data before the initialization.

Never loosen the carriage rail the red screw other than for replacing the
carriage.
Check if the FINE Cartridge is not in friction with a board as the paper gap
(carriage rail-platen) check after replacing the carriage.

English: Dispose of used batteries according to the local regulations.
German: Batterienentsorgung gemaess lokalen Vorschriften.
Part 1 - 30
Perform the following adjustments when the paper feed motor unit is replaced:
1. When removing the screws, mark the red screw holes.
Part 1 - 31
Fig.Part 1-3 Mark the boss position beside the red screw
2. In attaching the carriage rail, make sure that the boss fits into the hole and to the mark made
in step 1), then fasten the screws.
3. Be sure to perform the confirmation test detailed below; confirm that the print quality is
proper and the FINE Cartridges are not contacting the paper.
[Main chassis adjustment]
After installing the main chassis, be sure to perform the confirmation test detailed below; confirm
that the print quality is proper and the ink cartridges are not contacting the paper.
Part 1 - 32
Using Photo Paper Pro, and with the paper thickness lever set to the left position (normal
position), print an image and confirm that the print quality is proper, and the ink cartridges are
free from contacting the paper.
If the print quality is not proper, or an ink cartridge contacts the paper, adjust the head-to-paper
distance in the following procedures:
<Procedures for adjusting the head-to-paper distance:>
1. At the bottom edge of the boss beside the red screw on each side of the chassis, put a mark
to indicate the current position. (See the step 1 of the carriage rail adjustment above.)
2. Loosen the red screws, and adjust the head-to-paper distance.
{ To prevent the ink cartridges from contacting the paper: Raise the carriage rail from
the current position.
{ To improve the print quality: Lower the carriage rail from the current position.
Part 1 - 33
*1: Apply grease on the upper surface much more than the reverse side of the front surface.
Part 1 - 34
*2: Apply grease from the axis-inserted side for both gears.
(For applying grease on the gear inside diameter evenly when inserting the CS gear frame.)
*3: Never run over grease.
Part 1 - 35
<PART SHALL BE FREE FROM ANY GREASE(Reuse by wiping off is not allowed.)>
Part 1 - 36
- Never adhere grease to a head face side. This prevents from print quality defect.
- Apply grease on the specified surface only.
- Any grease-removed part is reusable after grease adheres to a part that the greasewiping method is described.
- In principle, any grease-removed part is not reusable after grease adheres to a part
that the grease-wiping method is described.

Possible Trouble
z
The ink level detection function does not activate properly if you remove the FINE
cartridge, and then reuse any spent FINE cartridge (except for the preceding FINE
cartridge).
e.g., In a case that you install any spent FINE cartridge:
Remove the using cartridge. Install new FINE cartridge. Install the removed FINE
cartridge again.
The error message NO INK is indicated if you remove the using FINE cartridge, and
then reinstall the same FINE cartridge again after installing any empty FINE cartridge.
The actual ink level differs from the indicated ink level due to special print patterns.
