3. SAFETY AND PRECAUTIONS

3-1 Safety Precautions
Please read the safety warnings and cautions provided in this manual to ensure that you use the
machine safely. Do not attempt to use the machine in any way not described in this manual.
This product emits low level magnetic flux. If you use a cardiac pacemaker and feel
abnormalities, please move away from this product and consult your doctor.

You may cause an electric shock, fire, or damage the machine if you ignore any of
these safety precautions.

Choosing a
location

Do not place the machine close to flammable solvents such as alcohol or thinners.

Power supply

Never attempt to plug in or unplug the machine from the power supply when your
hands are wet.
Always push the plug all the way into the power outlet.
Never damage, modify, stretch or excessively bend or twist the power cord. Do not
place heavy objects on the power cord.
Never plug the machine into a power socket that is shared with other equipment
(extension lead/cord, 2- or 3-way adapter, etc.).
Never use the machine if the power cord is bundled or knotted.
If you detect smoke, unusual smells or strange noises around the machine,
immediately unplug the machine at the power supply and call for service.
Periodically, unplug the machine and use a dry cloth to wipe off any dust or dirt
collected on the plug and the power outlet.
If the machine is placed at a location exposed to a lot of dust, smoke, or high
humidity, the dust collected on the plug absorbs moisture and may cause insulation
failure and fire.
If you hear thunder, disconnect the power supply of the machine and refrain from
using it.

Do not shake FINE Cartridge.
Ink may leak out and stain clothing or the surrounding area.
Never touch the electrical contacts on a FINE Cartridge after printing. The metal parts
may be very hot and couldcause burns.
Do not throw FINE Cartridge into fire.

3-2 Caution when Replacing Service Parts

3-2-1 Electrical shock
Be sure to disconnect the power cable and modular cable to prevent electrical shock.
If working with power on is required, do not use grounding strap. Using such equipment may
create conducting pathway, posing a risk of electrical shock.
See the following for parts and components that may generate electrical shock:
z
z

Power supply unit primary (supplied with AC voltage)

Telephone line primary

3-2-2 High temperature

In order to prevent burns during disassembly, allow at least ten minutes, after the power has been
switched off, for the high temperature components to cool down.
General high temperature components are as follows.
z
z
z
z

Motors
Power supply unit
Elements on driver ICs, etc., on PCBs (in particular, ICs with heatsinks)
FINE Cartridge aluminum plate

3-2-3 Fire
It is dangerous to throw lithium batteries and parts and components containing flammable
substances, such as cartridges, etc., into fire. Such parts and components must be disposed of in
accordance with local laws and regulations.

3-2-4 Ignition
When using solvents such as alcohol, etc., while conducting service, there is a danger of fire
igniting from heat from internal circuitry and from sparks. Before using any such solvents, be sure
to switch off the power and allow time for high temperature parts to cool down. Make sure that
there is sufficient ventilation when working with solvents.

3-2-5 Movable parts

In order to prevent accidents with movable parts, be sure to remove the power cable when
conducting service that requires disassembly. Also, take care that personal accessories and hair,
etc., are not caught in any moving parts.

3-2-6 Damage due to electrostatic discharge

This machine contains contact sensors and printed circuit boards that use ROMs, RAMs, custom
chips and other electronic components that are vulnerable to damage by electrostatic discharge.
Be careful to avoid any damage from electrostatic discharge when conducting service that
requires disassembly.
Static electricity warning
Electrostatic discharge can destroy electronic components and alter electrical
characteristics. Plastic tools and even your hands, if they are not earthed, contain
sufficient static electricity to damage electronic components.
The following materials may be used as countermeasures against electrostatic discharge:
z
z
z

Earth-connected conductive mat

Crocodile clips for the purpose of grounding metallic parts of the main unit
Earth-connected wrist-strap
(Use 1M resistance-integrated current control type.)

For service conducted on the user's premises, etc., where such countermeasure materials are not
available, the following countermeasures may be employed.
z
z

z
z

Use anti-static bags for the storage and carrying of PCBs and electrical elements.
Avoid silk and polyester clothing and leather-soled shoes, favoring instead cotton clothes
and rubber-soled shoes.
Avoid working in a carpeted area.
Before work, touch the grounded earth terminals of the main unit in order to discharge any
static electricity.
Use a wrist-strap and earth the metal parts of the main unit.
(Use 1M resistance-integrated current control type.)
PCBs and electrical elements must be lifted by holding the edges and avoid direct contact
with terminals.
Electric shock during the service
Wear an earth-connected equipment [e.g., wrist-strap (1M resistance-integrated
current control type)] if the machine is in current carrying condition during the
service.

3-2-7 Attaching and removing cables

Attaching and removing cables with the power still on may cause breakdowns and should be
avoided.
In particular, flat cables are likely to cause short circuits. When attaching or removing cables,
always be sure to turn the power off.

3-2-8 Prevention of ink soiling

Be careful when handling the FINE Cartridge nozzle, head cap, head wiper and waste inkpad.
Residual Ink may soil the main unit, working surfaces, your hands and clothes, etc.
If the ink should accidentally get into someone's eyes, rinse the affected eye with plenty of clean
water and seek medical attention.
If a large quantity of ink is accidentally swallowed, seek medical advice immediately.
In such a case, let the doctor know exactly what is written on the FINE Cartridge label.

3-2-9 Conductivity of the ink

The ink used in the FINE Cartridge is conductive. This means that, if the ink leaks, mechanical
parts should be wiped with a dampened paper towel or similar and electrical circuits wiped with
tissue paper so that all ink is removed from below the IC chips.
If power is switched on while ink is leaking on the electrical circuits, the circuitry may short out
and be damaged. If ink is leaking, the power must be switched off.
