Saving Lives,
Two By Two
Unique expertise at Seton Austin
saves mother and unborn baby

ecause of you and your generosity toward Setons mission to care for
the vulnerable, we are able to share amazing stories of healing with you.
Perhaps no stories make our hearts as soft as those about a pregnant
mother whose health is in crisis along with her unborn childs. Nothing
else could seem as vulnerable, as fragile.

On a cold day last year, just after Christmas, Kim Reyes was run down and
fighting a nasty cough. She made a doctors appointment. When she arrived, her
breathing was extremely labored, and she was transported to a nearby hospital.
Kim learned she had pneumonia and the H1N1 virus, the same strain that ignited
the swine flu pandemic in 2009. The bigger surprise was learning that she was
pregnant and in her second trimester. She had been stressed and had not been
paying close attention to herself.
To her shock, within 24 hours, she was much worse. Doctors told her she was
dying and there were two lives at risk. Kim would have to be transferred to Seton
for specialized care.
I just thought Id be stuck in the hospital for a few days, she said. I thought with
my age (38) and being healthy that I wouldnt get the swine flu.
A Life-Saving Transfer
Dr. Jordan Weingarten, medical director of the only ECMO program in Central
Texas located at Seton Medical Center Austin, got the call and sent an ambulance
and two perfusionists to transfer her. ECMO, or Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, is a suite of devices that could breathe for her in place of her sick lungs.
While Dr. Weingarten and the Seton Critical Care team managed Kims life-saving
care, the perinatal team led by Dr. John Gianopoulos, Seton president and CEO of
Perinatal Programs and Services, cared for her baby in utero.
Perinatal Care for Mom and Baby
Perinatology encompasses neonatal care and maternal-fetal medicine for high-risk
pregnancies. Examples include women with multi-fetal pregnancies, gestational
diabetes, hypertension, or other significant complications such as lupus, active
cancer, or flu and pneumonia like Kim suffered.
I checked on her babys vitals every day. Is the baby getting the proper nutrition?
Is the placenta healthy? Is the fetus growing as it should? These are the things a
perinatologist addresses. For Kim, I made recommendations on therapies that
were best for her and safe for her baby, said Dr. Gianopoulos.
He adds, I could not give more credit to the critical care team and the obstetrics
and perinatal team at Seton Austin for the outstan ing care Kim received. We

In fact, I was fortunate to have met my lovely wife through the Seton Forum. I am
a true believer in the power of philanthropy and our duty to care for the poor and
vulnerable. For the past two years, my predecessor chair Dan Herd, has led the
Boards work, and on behalf of all friends of The Seton Fund, I thank him for his
focus and keen guidance.
As the new chairman, I am filled with anticipation about what the future holds.
Austin now ranks as the 11th largest city in the United States. We all feel the growing pains, but there are
benefits to becoming a world-class city.
And there are many milestones to celebrate thanks to your generous support:
Seton is quickly becoming a center of innovative medical education, specialty care, and research. This
newsletter features two key programs at Seton Medical Center Austinperinatal services and stroke care.
The capital campaign for Dell Seton Medical Center at UT received a huge boost. Thanks to a generous $25
million challenge grant, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation will match each gift, dollar for dollar, until the
$50 million campaign is complete.
In April, you gathered for the 2015 Future of Care: Visionaries luncheon, which honored former Seton CEO
Charles J. Barnett, and raised approximately $350,000 for Dell Seton Medical Center at UT.
The Elizabeth Ann Seton Boards 24th EASB Live! Gala raised crucial funds for the Sister Gertrude
Endowment for the Poor and the Seton Community Health Centers, which serve as the healthcare home
to thousands of families in need.
Thank you for the opportunity to work with you to further Setons charitable mission and the work of the
Daughters of Charity. Together, we will care for the poor and vulnerable.
Sincerely,

Challenging you to join them to help fund Better Care Closer to Home
Future of Care: Visionaries
Luncheon Supports Teaching Hospital

In January, generosity reached new heights.

The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation announced a $25 million
challenge grant to help pay for construction of the Seton Healthcare
Familys new teaching hospital, Dell Seton Medical Center at The
University of Texas.

On April 2, about 500 medical, academic, and business leaders raised

approximately $350,000 for Dell Seton Medical Center at UT at the Future
of Care: Visionaries luncheon. Former Seton CEO Charles J. Barnett was honored
for transforming healthcare and for his vision in bringing a world-class teaching
hospital and medical school to Central Texas.

The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation will match each gift, dollar for
dollar, until the $50 million campaign is complete. The new $295
million hospital, set to open in 2017 at 15th and Red River streets,
will be paid for by Seton, with help from philanthropy for the final
$50 million.

More information at futureofcare.supportseton.org.

Two years ago, the Dell family foundation announced a $50 million
grant to help create The University of Texas Dell Medical School.
The medical school will join efforts with Setons new teaching hospital
for a new paradigm of teaching, research, and healing. The resulting
medical district is also expected to generate over 15,000 new jobs and
over $2 billion in economic benefit for our region annually.

of community philanthropy in support of Dell Seton Medical Center at UT.

Since 2003, the foundations Central Texas health investments have

centered on creating and supporting the elements necessary to provide
best in class care for local families, Susan Dell, co-founder and board
chair of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, said. We want to
promote health, not just treat diseases. Our goal always has been to
invest in the future of care for the entire community.

Kim doesnt remember anything from her many days on ECMO. She was
heavily sedated to keep her body still and on a ventilator to help her breathe.

n Plans are underway to update Seton Austin NICU and

consolidate high-risk obstetrical services.

In mid-February she was well enough to go home. Amazingly, she returned

to her job as a legal secretary just a couple weeks later. But the best was yet
to come.

n Upgrades support Seton Austin NICUs Level III status

to care for the most fragile babies.

On March 10, at just over 35-weeks gestation, Kim went into labor at a
restaurant near her office. She was rushed by ambulance back to Seton
Austin, where she delivered a baby girl, Jennifer Margaret. Jennifer is now a
beautiful one-year-old.

n New mother-baby patient rooms and operating room space

will be added.
n New Ronald McDonald unit to support families will open
soon.

Your Support Saves Lives

marthas story

never imagined having a major stroke would be part

of my life story at the age of 63, but it happened.
And, the generosity of Seton donors has made all
the difference in my life.
On August 5, 2014, I awoke from a bad dream with my
right arm feeling really heavy. The problem was, it wasnt
just a dream. My right arm felt strangely unattached to my
body. I couldnt move it.
My husband Bill and I knew that something was very
wrong. He called 911 right away. Fortunately, I was still somewhat cognizant, and told them to take me to Seton. By the
time I arrived at Seton Medical Center Austins emergency
room, my speech was severely affected, and I had lost most
of the feeling in my right side. I could barely say my name.
Setons stroke team was already there waiting for me.
One of the first faces I saw was Dr. Krishna Pokalas, a
former student at St. Stephens Episcopal School, where I
work, who is now a neurology resident.
I would learn that I was a good candidate for an NIH
stroke research study led by Dr. Stephen Warach, Setons
chief scientific officer. Because my stroke started while I was
asleep, I received a high powered MRI scan. This 3T MRI,

the most advanced MRI on the market, gave my doctors a

good idea of when my stroke started, which was crucial in
determining my treatment.
Thanks to the MRI evidence and Dr. Warachs research
study, I received anticlotting medication that otherwise
couldnt have been given to me. If blood flow to my brain
had been blocked for too long, the medicine could harm
me. But the MRI showed that I was within the safe window,
and the medicine significantly aided in my recovery.
I began to regain feeling on my right side by the second
day in the hospital and was discharged the next day. For
the next three months I rested and worked with a speech
therapist. Today, there are virtually no noticeable signs of
my ordeal. Im convinced I would be facing a very different
reality if it werent for the new MRI, the research study, and
the expert stroke team at Seton.
So thank you, thank you for your supportespecially
for the donations raised by the Seton Development Board
to secure Setons 3T MRI. Your generosity has made all the
difference to me, and Im sure for many other patients. Im
so grateful to you.
