MATH
READING AND INTERPRETING READINGS
FROM ELECTRIC METER

A DepEd-BEAM Distance Learning Program supported by the Australian Agency for International Development

To the Learner
Hello my dear learner!

How are you?

Today you are going to

learn about Reading and Interpreting Readings from Electric Meter.

You will also know how to record or write the electric meter reading.

Lets Learn This

In this module you will learn how to read and interpret the
readings from electric meter. It provides you examples and exercises
that will help you find and compute the number of kilowatt hours used.
So after learning this module you are expected to:
Read and interpret readings from electric meter.
Record the reading shown by the dials of the electric
meter.
Compute the number of kilowatt-hours used.

Lets Try This

A. Start from the rightmost dial. Record each number, then read.

1.)

-1-

2.)

B. Set the dials for the indicated readings.

3.)

Lets Study This

Electricity is used by a wide variety of household appliances and
machines.
We use electricity for cooking, lighting, ironing and
operating different appliances.

An electric meter measures the amount of electricity consumed

and this can be expressed in kilowatt-hour (k.w.h). One kilowatt is
equal to 1000 watts.

-3-

An electric meter has four dials. The pointer of each dial moves
ten times as fast as the dial on the left. The pointers of the dials next
to each other move in opposite directions. The pointers of B and D
move clockwise and the dials of A and C move counterclockwise. If the
pointer is between two numbers, record the smaller number.
The reading of the above electric meter is 6 149 kwh.
Here is another example:

The reading is 6 385 kwh.

To find the amount of electricity consumed, subtract the previous
reading from the present reading.
Let us compute of the number of kilowatt-hours used given a
previous reading from the present reading of 6 385 kwh.

Present Reading:
6 385 kwh
Previous Reading: - 6 149 kwh
236 kwh

Another example:

Present Reading

Present Reading:
2 941 kwh
Previous Reading: - 2 736 kwh
205 kwh
The electricity consumed is 205 kwh.

Lets Do This
A. Write the reading shown on each electric meter.

1.)

_____________ kwh

2.)

_____________ kwh
-5-

B. Find the number of kilowatt-hours used.

B. Read and solve.

4. The Cruz family consumed 208 kwh this month. The previous
reading was 5172 kwh. What is the present reading?

Lets Remember This

To read the electric meter, read each dial from left to right,
looking at the number where the pointer is. If the pointer is in
between numbers, get the lower numbers reading.
To find the amount of electricity consumed, subtract the
previous reading from the present reading.

___________

5.)Read and solve (2 pts.)

Rona read 3 619 kwh on their electric meter. If the
previous reading was 3 146 kwh, how many kilowatt-hours
they consume?
Answer: _______________________
