AIR/GAS VELOCITY MEASUREMENT EQUIPMENT

Innovative Combustion Technologies currently markets four types of probes for air
and/or gas velocity measurement. These are the Forward-Reverse Velocity
Probe, Fecheimer Probe, Dirty Air Probe, and the Standard L-Shaped Pitot
Tube. Each of these probes have specific applications that they are uniquely
suited for:
The Forward-Reverse Probe measures air or gas flow in straight runs of ductwork
where the flow can be assumed to be parallel to the duct.
The Fecheimer Probe is the probe of choice for performing fan tests or where test
ports are located near bends or restrictions and air/gas flow is expected to be
turbulent.
The Dirty Air Probe is specifically designed for use in dust laden environments such
as burner lines or other types of transport lines where particulate can easily plug
other types of impact probes.
The Pitot Tube is the probe of choice whenever measuring airflow in a straight run
of ducting. The L-Shape of the pitot tube requires that test ports be of the plug
or close nipple style for access of the probe.

The most commonly utilized air flow

measuring probe is the billeted head
forward-reverse velocity probe. This probe
is designed with a machined billeted head
that is resistant to damage.
Forwardreverse velocity probes are available in
lengths of up to 15 and are capable of
operating in temperatures of up to 1500 F.
The Forward-Reverse probe also comes
equipped with an integral thermocouple
and static pressure sensing tap.

The Fecheimer probe is an industry accepted

three hole probe capable of determining the
direction of maximum velocity head.
When
combined with a protractor, an angular
component of the velocity head, parallel to the
ductwork being traversed, can be calculated.
This capability is well suited for such applications
as fan acceptance tests or when test locations
are located near bends or restrictions.
Fecheimer probes come complete with an
integral type K thermocouple. Constructed of
304 stainless steel and TIG welded, the
Fecheimer probe is an extremely durable and
rugged piece of test equipment. The Fecheimer
probe is available in diameters from 1 " to 2".

The dirty air probe is a field proven device

which allows measurement of air flow in a dust
laden environment, with a minimum of probe
stoppage. This probe measures velocity head
differentials across a deflector plate, positioned
between the high and low pressure taps.
Ideally, measurements are taken on a
minimum of two axes, 90 apart on a vertical
run of pipe. The dirty air probe is a useful
piece of equipment in measuring the airflow in
individual burner lines, with the mill in service.

PITOT TUBE
Pitot tubes are the standard probe for
velocity head measurement.
The
standard L-shaped Pitot Tube should
be used whenever possible for
measurement. Typically, this probe is
used mainly during clean air tests on
the individual burner lines to determine
airflow balance in the absence of fuel.
Secondary air flow measurement can be
conducted with the pitot tube whenever
possible, however due to test port
layout, access is often restricted. In
cases when it is not possible or feasible
to use a pitot tube, a Forward-Reverse
probe should be used.

Pitot tubes usually measure 5/16 in

diameter. However, heavy wall versions of
the probe are available. The pitot tube is
available in various lengths from 12 to 8.
Constructed from 304 stainless steel, the
pitot tube will give a lifetime of service. This
design never needs calibration and is rated
to 1500 F. Permanent, stamped insertion
depth graduations on the sides of the probe
facilitate accurate positioning.
Low
sensitivity to misalignment gives accurate
readings even when tube is misaligned up to
15 degrees.
