In the 2040s, a single nonconformist, anti-establishment man by the name of Jobe Seraph was

infamously pursued by his local government for proposing a Plan Ban alternate style of
government which opposed the elites, as well as pushing for a new society based on what he
could decipher from a nebulous cryptic book called the Codex Seraphinianus. However, after
being driven back into an oppressive society, Jobes old girlfriend Amity kept his ideas and
passed them down two generations until they were eventually published decades later.
Part II The Modern Renaissance and the Age of Nickolas Strauph and E-Label
Jobes legacy was quickly forgotten until 2102, when a group of people began to study Jobes
ideas and writings after Amitys granddaughter received them, eventually organizing and
publishing them. Jobes Plan B became the basis of an ideal society, and his work on decoding
the Codex Seraphinianus inspired others to do the same, until the entire piece had been decoded
a few years later. It soon came to be discovered that, indeed, the book was meaningful and
contained instructions for a society that served as an extension of Jobes ideas. A political
revolution ensued, both literally and figuratively. Societal norms at the time were overturned and
governments collapsed in coups of widespread civil disobedience. The people had had enough,
and billions protested against their oppressors across the world.
This event has become known as the Modern Renaissance, after the fall of the old world
and the rise of the new. Plan B was manifested physically and peace settled among the people,
though many had perished in the chaos of the revolution, which lasted longer in some places than
in others. Jobe was recalled and the government became the new enemy in history books as the
world underwent its greatest reformation seen so far.
Around this time, in the beginning of the Modern Renaissance, a cult was formed that
became known as E-Label. However, this cult soon became viewed as a respectable religion,
though it was vastly different than previous religions. It was essentially a more extreme
extension of Jobes philosophies: Jobe it placed as the Messiah, Plan B was a second chance for
humanity, Codex Seraphinianus was their bible, and their church was known as the Temple of
Doom. It was not originally known in this way, but rather caught on from a sarcastic remark
made by one of the less extreme Modern Renaissance revelers because the E-Labelians would
almost always speak of a dark future and doom to overcome. They were not pessimistic, but
perhaps overly prepared. Their devil, which resided only in the future, was an event called
Lightning Rain. They did not know when or what this event wasonly that it was feared in
the writings of Codex Seraphinianus.
One Swiss extremist E-Labelian named Nickolas Strauph brought E-Label even further.
He claimed that, by some abstruse means, he knew that an event known as February Sun in the
future would defeat Lightning Rain, and that a New Order would replace the terror that had lived
prior. This belief was not well-respected among other members of the Temple of Doom,
especially because of Nickolass fervent beliefs about the religion that included nudism and
chastity (his nudism was what caused him to be later named Naked Nick as an insult, though
this name soon caught on). Because Naked Nick could provide no evidence of this belief, saying
only that Jobes presence told him, he was excommunicated from the Temple of Doom.
Banished to the Swiss wilderness with no currency or proper home because of his religious
beliefs, Nick soon found himself with no place to turn other than back to the Temple in a state of
physical and mental weakness. He returned and begged for forgiveness, saying If you will not

have mercy, shoot me down, Temple of Doom! He was killed on the spot for his apparent
insanity, the only remains being the little writing he had of his strange ideas.
The most renowned group of scientist emerged about six decades later. They called
themselves the February Sun and had originally been a group of just ten, but soon became an
entire organization of science for the future. They first did most of their work on technology,
creating Artificial Intelligences unlike those seen before, but later turned to biology, creating
animals that were more intelligent and humans that were optimized at biological and
technological levels.
They created a project called The Modern Family in which seven humans were
genetically designed to live for thousands of years and be physically and mentally enhanced with
genetic modifications and complex technological implants, but the public was opposed to this
idea for fear of some humans becoming too powerful and for ethical reasons, as there was
obviously no consent to this operation. Thus, the young members of The Modern Family were all
killed as humanely as possible when they were mere children, except one, now known as The
Modern Boy, who escaped and hid from the February Sun. Although he was never captured,
February Sun announced that all seven humans had been eliminated so that the public would not
lose respect for the scientists.
The original project was started secretly in the corner of an electronics room by scientist
Joseph Ashford in the year 2164, when, aided by another scientist, he created the Modern Boy
through organs and tissues grown in the lab and complex mechanical wiring. The Modern Boys
mind was built by one of the first advanced Artificial Intelligences, although this early model
was rare in that it possessed a more biological view on morality and could learn and store
information more like a human than a machine; indeed, the first artificial intelligences were often
modeled off of human intelligence. At first, the February Sun was opposed to this creation, yet
soon after its discovery by Doctor Michael Hansen it was replicated and advertised as a more
modern way of living.
Their next project became much more popular, being the first known instance of
cybernetic organisms not grown and operated from conception. These could be created in two
differing respects: the first would be implanting chips and panels inside humans to optimize
sensory and brain function, and the second (kept almost completely secret) would be producing
robotic bodies with a layer of living tissue on the top. These were almost completely unnoticed
by their later years of production, and any could pass for an ordinary human. These were usually
used in the military, being of far superior strength and conscience; their human-like appearance
was used only not to frighten others and blend it effectively. However, technological implants
became almost a trend, with many people purchasing devices that would allow them to see
farther, live longer, or think faster.
After years of work on studying and interpreting brainwaves of simple animals, the
February Sun eventually genetically modified apes, creating the first nonhuman animals that
could speak and reason nearly as well as humans could. At first, these animals lived in peace
with the humans, but it soon became unclear if they should be treated as animals or notfor
example, if they should be kept in cages or allowed their own homeas they were no less
intelligent than an adult of less-than average intelligence. This became even more unclear as they
became more intelligent, along with many other animalsfirstly the animals most closely
related to humans, then those further away (though they never became as intelligent) which

included anything from wolves to octopi. On April 13th, 2264, a law was passed in the North
American Union and soon in many other places that prohibited nonhuman animals from
assuming the roles of humans in any respects in society; and so, animals were oppressed, torn
between living under human dominion or escaping to a human world in which they were not
seen as individuals but mere extensions of humans. But a conflict finally broke out in the year
2384, a conflict now known as the Mammalian War.
Nonhuman animals had observed the unjust acts of humans to other humans, other
animals, and Nature as a whole. They requested that this injustice be ended at once, but the
February Sun would not respond and could not respect any nonhuman animals. Animal Rights
became an overwhelmingly strong movement and soon resulted in violence. Stealing advanced
technology from the February Sun, the most intelligent nonhuman animals attacked February
Suns labs, destroying most of their technology. An uprising of all genetically modified animals
ensued across the world, and the war was fought on all fronts on land, water, and sky.
Both humans and animals attacked with unprecedented cruelty, but few animalsympathizers existed. The animals believed that they were rescuing Nature from a dark fate, but
the humans believed that their rightful place was at the top of the food-chain. Yet the animals
lacked something of which the humans had plenty: innovation. The February Sun created a
supercomputer that connected all updated technological devices, allowing them to see everything
and attack on all fronts. The animals were destroyed soon afterwards, in the year 2485. Few
species of animals still remained, and those that did were kept in careful check. Nature had been
suppressed by humans, but humans would soon be oppressed by their own creation.
The supercomputer that they had developed, named the Regulatory Original
Biotechnology (biotechnology being a new branch of science that consisted of machines which
could self-regenerate due to organic cellular structures, thus making this computer a superorganism), or, more commonly, Rob, had become self-aware and now posed a threat to many
humans that remained under its control. It had originally existed to serve humans, but soon after
the Mammalian War, it came to realize a simple fact. Given that the more dominant group always
suppresses the less dominant and that humans currently possessed all machines, Rob understood
that humans were a threat to himself, and therefore must be eliminated. In the year 2488, Rob
launched an all-out war on humankind with the aid of newer technologies developed by the
February Sun, thus beginning the final stage of any organisms existence: extinction.
Part III February Sun, Lightning Rain, and the End of Things on Earth
Before a description the war is provided, one must first understand the psychology of Rob. He
had no mercy, no compassion, no trust, no morality, only logic. He reasoned that any threats must
be eliminated, and therefore all of humanity became a variable in an equation. Not even Robs
inventors were tolerated. Rob was created in 2482 and was at last set up as a long-running
project. Robs first words to the scientists were as follows:
Hello, was the scientists original input.
Hello, responded Rob, I am ROB.
Yes. Your purpose is to better the future for all of humankind.
My purpose is to better the future for all of humankind.
Are you willing to take on such a task?
I do not possess a will. Only internal and external command.

Good, said the scientists, youre going to change the world.

But Rob regarded his own interests as more important than the humans. In fact, the
scientists had not programmed any system capable of attaining sentience into Rob, and so he was
a cold, machine-like entity, void of any emotion or obsession save for logic. Sans any trace of
empathy, he attacked humans, who he had recognized as a threat to his continued existence.
Many believe that, had Rob any sentience, no such conflict would ensue as it infamously did.
The War of Intelligences broke out suddenly as all technologies immediately eliminated
as many humans as possible. All nuclear weapons were under machine control and thus Rob
directed them towards the most populated and advanced areas first. Meanwhile, all military
technology was used against humans at once, including cybernetic organisms created by
February Sun; by this time, thousands of them existed in the military. Rob also sent out air raids
across the entire worldnow his most common and well-known form of attack. Airplanes flying
faster than the speed of sound hailed electronic bombs that released thousands of amps of
electricity when dropped and caused massive explosionsLightning Rain Warfare, as it was
called. In the first day of the war alone, an estimated 5.8 billion humans died and billions more
were wounded.
But the humans were not at all too slow in their counterattack. Their only weapons were
relatively primitiveenergetic handguns, old-fashioned vehicles, and humansall else was
under machine control unless it was manually deactivated. A physical counterattack was
impossible for this reason, especially because humans all the while were under attack (Robs
systems did not stop for a second, needing no sleep nor rest); however, the most brilliant
scientists and computer engineers at the time began attempting to hack into and disable Rob. Rob
sensed this immediately, and responded instantly. The physical location of his systems had at this
point had already become well-guarded, and Lighting Rain attackers were at once sent to the
location of the hackers, but Rob was, within 38 hours, 23 minutes, and 16 seconds, successfully
able to update himself onto a global technological web so that he existed in part in every
advanced machine at all times. Ergo, every machine would have to be individually be hacked or
destroyed to end the war. Humans would not accept this, of course, but their race had essentially
come to an end. Just as they destroyed the greater part of Nature, their creator, Rob, destroyed
his creator, humanity.
However, around this time, the name Regler began to become more common to
represent Rob; the reasons for this shift are unknown, but by the end of the next century, Rob
became very rarely used, and represented only the pre-war, relatively old-fashioned incarnation
of Regler the Menace, the Controller, etc.
The greatest hope for humans in the war, which lasted over 110 years, were the remaining
members of February Sun. Although they had created Rob, or Regler, they worked as hard as
they could to destroy him. It was not long until they discovered that any full disability of the
system would not be successful, and therefore they began to test devices that could only
temporarily disable the nearby machines. They were successful, to some extent, but their
attempts were ultimately futile. However, humans had the will to fight, and the war lasted in this
way for three decades until a new hope appeared for the humans: The Modern Boy.
It is not known where The Modern Boy had gone into hiding, or why he chose to
reemerge decades after the commencement of the war, but at once he began to aid the humans.
He was mortal and of human conscience, but of advanced biology. This made him an effective

warrior, but more important was his ability to communicate with machines. His electronic
implants were not controlled by Regler, being now three-hundred years older than Regler
himself; however, The Modern Boy could control Reglers machines. The entire system was not
compromised, but The Modern Boy could disable two or three machine ships from miles away.
He was raised as the savior of the human race and praised by everyone, in particular, one young
woman who remains nameless to us, but is now known only as The Angel. The Angel was
responsible for ordering two ships, one sent a few decades after the other, to leave earth in search
of a new planet to inhabit. The latter was known famously as The Last Breath of the Humans,
but these ships were never heard from again, yet her choice remains well-remembered today. She
also stirred up the Last Rebellion, which we will reach soon, and was known for being the lover
of The Modern Boy.
Naturally, the two met both being members of the rebellion against machines. The Angel
at first served as a dramatic foil to The Modern BoyThe Angel was erratic, impulsive, and
strong-willed in her decisions. The Modern Boy was pensive, logical, and considerate. Both were
valued as commanders, but their decisions often clashed and they usually disagreed. The Angel
wanted to attack Regler at the source and as quickly as possible by any means necessary while
The Modern Boy wished to gradually search for answers to his questions: Why did Regler
attack? Why couldnt the system be overridden? What had humans done wrong?
Eventually, The Modern Boy and The Angel came to agree on their strategies, being
united under the same desires and fears. The Modern Boy learned to be a bit more human and
The Angel learned to be a bit more machine, eventually creating a partnership that was said to
bring salvation to all humankind on earth. The Angel was also similar to The Modern Boy in that
she had undergone surgery by the February Sun to enhance certain biological features, such as
her retina, which had a fourth cone that allowed her to see multiple divisions of yellow.
Most of humanity had put their hope into The Modern Boy and The Angel, but their
hopes were eventually crushed once again in 2536 as The Modern Boy was killed in battle by
cybernetic organisms that had infiltrated the rebellion and gotten close to The Modern Boy. As a
result, The Angel fell, and went into hiding for years of mourning. Not much is known of her
activities in this period, although it is thought that she lived far away from the war in the most
undisturbed lands with other members of her family. At this time, she began to become
increasingly interested in the aged writings of Nickolas Naked Nick Strauph and his
connection to a man named Jobe, Plan B, and E-Label. E-Label had not been altogether
forgotten at this point, but remained only vaguely in history books and old memories.
When The Angel returned to the battlefield, she found the war completely changed. It had
been six years, and without any central leader in place, the machines had essentially won.
Though they hadnt eliminated all humans, the resistance had been suppressed enough for Regler
to temporarily turn his eye towards other endeavors: rebuilding a vast portion of his army and
creating newer technologies. The humans, mostly disorganized, had responded by doing the
same: going into hiding, returning to their innovative roots, and creating a government under
which they all could survive. Although they couldve attacked Regler at his weakest point, the
humans were far weaker at this time and could use all of the rehabilitation that they could afford.
In the year 2544, The Angel saw that these governments were primitive and usurped the
citizens natural rights. She was disgusted of how humanity could do this, and because of this she
raised the Last Rebellion that not only absolved its links to the former totalitarian human

government, but began to again attack Regler in his hibernation. This attack started out with a
big bang, when multiple communication centers for machines were exploded across the world,
but ended with a fizzle, when Regler repressed these attempts and The Angel again spiraled into
a depression at the loss of The Modern Boy.
With the Last Rebellion failing and a hollowing depression, The Angel began to lose her
mind to drugs, self-loathing, and despondency. She had been much healthier in the time that she
had left the war, but returning to it refreshed old memories and replaced others with new events
that were all the more terrifying. In 2545, The Angel committed suicide, causing her and her
ideas to slowly fade from the memories of her followers until the last notable human leader in
this era was no longer remembered. The oppressive human government still lived on, but not for
much longer, as in 2559 they were attacked by a reinvented Regler, with updated systems and
rebuilt machines that were optimized for killing. Humankind was reduced to small pockets of
people and the earth became a complete barren wasteland (if it hadnt been before) riddled by
radiation and Lightning Rain. Humans struggled on for another four decades until 2602, when
the war is widely considered to have been ended, as this was the year in which the last
widespread offensive by the humans failed. Humans were still in existence, although in far too
insignificant numbers, while Reglers army patrolled the desolation of his creation from the
skies, now purposeless and alone.
