While information regarding the details of

Strathmore Mayor Ells censure remain scarce,
some councillors frustrations for lack of a resolution are fuelling a request for assistance from
Municipal Affairs to conduct an independent
investigation into the chief-elected officials actions - a request the mayor felt shouldnt be
limited to only his behaviour.
Seven months after council determined Mayor Ell had committed a series of breaches in
regards to the Town of Strathmore Mayor and
Councillor Code of Ethics and Conduct Policy,
and the Municipal Government Act (MGA), the
issue once again catapulted into the public eye.
In a statement made by Councillor Bob Sobol
during a regular council meeting on June 3, the
mayors lack of effort to resolve the issues and
his actions to seek legal counsel, caused continuous concern and resulted in the demand for
the independent study. While Mayor Ell was not
opposed to the proposal of an investigation, he
asked the request be altered for Municipal Affairs to consider the circumstances leading up
to the censure motion, which would include,
but not be limited to, his actions. He added it
would be the best way for the matter to be fully
investigated without limitation.
I have considered the motion and believe
that the mandate to be given to Municipal Affairs should not be limited to my actions alone,
Mayor Ell said. The motion that was put on
by Councillor Sobol is to be investigating the
mayor, and Im asking that all circumstances be
investigated.
At the end of October 2014, council held an
emergency council meeting to officially censure
Ell, referring to communications with town administration and staff, and councillor involvement in the towns administrative functions. As
a result of the censure, council passed a motion last year that he adhere to his obligations
as councillor and mayor under the MGA and
Councillor Code of Ethics and Conduct Policy;
not interact or communicate with town staff
without approval of the CAO or Deputy CAO;
not interfere in the administrative functions of
the town; and not communicate with the CAO
without councils direction unless the communication occurs within the context of a council
or council committee meeting.
When council was asked to consider the
mayors change to the motion last week, some
councillors took issue with the request.

In fact, it is written in legislation that the
funeral industry is not permitted to work by
the philosophy of Caveat Emptor. With one
internet search, you can find articles speaking
of the unscrupulous nature of funeral directors.
The reality of the situation is that, like any
industry, there are always some immoral
individuals. However, the vast majority of
funeral homes will do whatever is possible to
meet the needs of grieving families. Funeral
directors are required to explain everything
to a family, knowing that families are often
unfamiliar with the industry. As such, Caveat
Emptor does not and cannot apply in the
funeral industry.

Municipal Affairs investigates

Continued from Page 1

I have nothing to hide, but I do resent the fact that suddenly we move
from some inappropriate actions that
were allegedly done and voted on by
council regarding censure, to nothing
being done to correct or address the
situation, to now an addition to the motion where were all going to be investigated, said Councillor Pat Fule.
I find that interesting and very telling. Its very bothersome to me and it
definitely changes the intent of what
weve been doing since October.
Councillor Bob Sobol also mentioned
sending correspondence to the mayor
on March 25 and his willingness to
work with the mayor to resolve the ongoing issues. However, he added no effort was made, a feeling other councillors reiterated.
All of council has struggled with
this for seven months now, and obviously were not getting anywhere, said
Deputy Mayor Rocky Blokland. Some
councillors have tried to reach out to
the mayor in efforts to resolve this, and
unfortunately were unsuccessful. These
are extremely tough decisions we are
trying to make.
According to Councillor Denise Peterson, the ongoing issue caused the
town additional cost and chronic communication deficits.
My four fellow councillors urged
Mayor Ell to seek resolution, and on
several occasions I confronted Mayor
Ell about the need to resolve the issues

about the censure as well as other issues, said Councillor Peterson.

Initially all council believed that he
would do as he said and move to remediate the problems seven months
later the original issues have not been
resolved. His failure to act has not been
damage neutral. Without further action,
the citizens of Strathmore will continue
to pay the price of Mayor Ells breaches.
Mayor Ell had sought legal counsel
prior to the meeting, and while his requested changes to the motion were
not accepted, he said he has trust in
Municipal Affairs to conduct a fair and
impartial investigaton.
I disagree with them, I have made
some effort, said Mayor Ell. I had
been in discussion with a couple of
the councillors to see what we could
do in coming up with a solution, and
it wasnt acceptable. I had made an effort.
Mayor Ell voted in opposition of the
motion, but council passed the motion
to request the minister of Municipal Affairs to conduct an inquiry of the conduct of Mayor Ell.

There really is no safe way to tan. In fact, in some

circles, a healthy tan is an oxymoron. Skin experts
say it takes only one painful, blistering sunburn
during the first 10 years of life to double the risk of
skin cancer. This is one situation where an ounce
of prevention is certainly true. Protect your skin
this summer.
June is Brain Injury Awareness Month in Canada
to raise awareness that a concussion is a brain
injury. Brain injury is a silent epidemic. In fact,
it is the number-one killer and disabler of people
under the age of 44. The Brain Injury Association of
Canada urges all Canadians to help prevent acquired
brain injuries by wearing helmets while cycling,
skateboarding and playing contact sports.
Are you a slow eater? Good for you! Studies done
on this topic show that those who take time with
their meals and chew their food longer will consume
fewer calories and you will feel fuller faster. Food
digestion begins in the mouth so chewing longer will
help this first phase of digestion.
Dr. Ted Sourkes died in Janaury. His research
provided a great step forward in the treatment of
Parkinsons (PD) when he noticed that PD patients
brains had lower levels of dopamine. Dopamine
doesnt pass through the barrier to the brain, but he
noticed that a precursor to dopamine, L-dopamine,
did enter the brain. This drug provided PD patients
with a new lease on life.
When new drugs are discovered, chances are that
we will know about them. Keeping current with
whats new in medications is an important part of
our job.

Ducks migrate home for the summer

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

The provincial government distribution of a generous monetary injection of $11.6 million dollars in grant
funding ensured an increased amount
of wetland conservation and restoration while presenting Ducks Unlimited
Canada with an opportunity to set up
shop in Strathmore once again.
Ducks Unlimited recently took possession of their office in downtown
Strathmore, owing to the monetary
boost through the Government of Albertas Watershed Resiliency and Restoration Program (WRRP) that allows
the organization to build stronger relationships, and increase their presence
within the rural areas.
I think all in all were hoping to get
into the community again and make
our presence more known than maybe it is right now, said Warren Robb,
conservation programs specialist with
Ducks Unlimited. What were trying
to do out here, our main program is
restoring wetlands and we go out and
we try to target areas that have drainage on them and restore historically
drained wetlands back to their natural
function, the natural ecosystems, that
they used to be.Thats the program
were trying to deliver and thats kind
of where our WRRD money comes into
play.
The organizations decision to return to Strathmore, where they had
been located previously, rested in part
in the communitys central location.
While the town is in close proximity
to favourable habitats and ecosystems,
strengthening these areas may add resilience when faced with floods. In response to Albertas devastating floods
of 2013, Ducks Unlimited realized that
focus is shed on engineering solutions,
but also experienced a noticeable in-

crease in recognition towards creating

strong and resilient natural ecosystems,
such as wetlands, to provide protection
from floods.
Strathmore is part of the prairie pothole region, so you would see lots of
little small wetlands throughout and
that type of habitat is really important
for water fowl, said Ashley Rawluck,
conservation specialist with Ducks Unlimited Canada. So its really important
to restore and maintain these small
prairie potholes. Strathmore is one of
the target areas of what we want to
work within so it just makes sense to
have an office here.
A devastating 63 per cent of wetlands
have been lost in the provinces settled
areas, and figures range from 80 to 90
per cent in areas adjacent to urban centres. From the remaining wetlands, one
per cent continues to be lost every two
years.
Ducks Unlimited is expecting the
Strathmore office to contain six staff
members and are planning on working
together with the community to improve the surrounding areas.
We realized too, you can talk to
somebody about a program or maybe
restore some drained wetlands and
they may not be ready to agree to that
today, but maybe [they will] six months
down the road, said Rawluck.
Having moved into their office on
June 1, the group has already started

When the Bow River riding was re-established by
the 2012 federal electoral
boundaries redistribution,
it proved a double-edged
sword for the residents of
Strathmore and Wheatland
County. While the electoral
boundary changes resulted

in six additional Alberta

seats to the House of Commons, it also - much to the
dismay of local politicians
and community members
- separated the southern
portion of the constituency from its long-time and
highly regarded Member of
Parliament.
While Minister of State
Kevin Sorenson was often

praised by community members and lifelong friends for his honesty and dedication to the area, the mood turned comical
over the weekend, when residents recognized the Crowfoot MP during a farewell
roast a bittersweet moment for the politician.
The evening was a lot of good laughs,
but Im losing a great part of my constituency and Ive made some amazing lifelong friends over the years, Sorenson
said.
That part is bitter. The sweet part is we
get to go out on our own terms and its
boundary changes that made the difference. Its not that I was defeated or that
Im walking away. Its also sweet because
I know Martin Shields will do a good job
in representing that constituency.
Third-generation
Albertan
Martin
Shields, who is in his third term as mayor
of Brooks, has served on Alberta Municipal board, and comes equipped with 40
years of knowledge about the Bow River
riding area, won the Conservative nomination for the new rural riding back in
September.
Kevin is a great guy and filling his
shoes is something that I probably cant
do but its a great riding with lots of good
people, said Shields. As he explained
his concern about all these people in the
south that he didnt know and as he found
they were tremendous people. Weve
known each other for a while because
hes the guy thats the leader out there that
were all trying to catch up to.
While Shields opted for a speech rather
than participate in the roast, he joined
many local politicians including Strathmore Councillor Bob Sobol, Wheatland
County Councillor Berniece Bland and
Strathmore-Brooks MLA Derek Fildebrandt who attended the event.
Strathmore councillor and former mayor
Steve Grajczyk, who has known Sorenson
for 14 years, didnt hesitate when asked to
take part in the roast, but quickly realized
the challenge.
It was going to be hard, because how
do you roast a guy that really doesnt have
that many faults? said Grajczyk. And
heres a guy thats roasting a guy, who was
pretty wild all his life and you could roast
me fairly easily. But hes probably one
of the most honest politicians Ive ever
met. His work ethic comes right from the
heart and were sorry to see him leave.
Grajczyk added that while he is disappointed in the turn of events, he is looking forward to the possibility of Shields
representing the riding if he were to win
in the upcoming election.
Sorenson was first elected as the Member of Parliament in 2000, and since then
continued to be re-elected with more than
80 per cent each time. Aware of the endorsements and over 10 years of working
with the area, Sorenson knows that his
farewell celebration did not mean goodbye.
Its been very rewarding and Im going to miss it, said Sorenson. The good
thing is that I will be there beside Martin
Shields as he represents Strathmore. Ill
come back. If he hosts meetings, on occasion, Ill certainly want to come back.

Janice Eaton suffered

a number of serious
life-threatening illnesses that landed her in a
coma with low expectations of survival. Her
horse Prince came to
visit her at the Peter
Lougheed
Hospital.
The community is now
asked to help with her
recovery by participating in a fundraiser on
June 18.

Janice Eaton wasnt supposed to
live. Though she was at the brink of
beating her colon cancer, a sudden
blood clot that travelled to her lungs,
followed by seven cardiac arrests, kidney failure, a coma, and a stroke, sunk
expectations to rock-bottom. To make
matters worse, Eaton then suffered a
catastrophic brain bleed, and was no
longer expected to live. Doctors issued
warnings that by the off-chance she
would wake, she would be severely affected mentally, and cautioned about
further resuscitations. And yet her
family refused to admit defeat. Then,
two-weeks later, in December, Eaton
opened her eyes, and much to the
doctors disbelief, with memory in tact.
Falling flat on offering up a medical
explanation, some have chalked her
survival up to fate, even going as far
as calling her a miracle. And while the
road to recovery is ongoing Eaton
who woke up completely paralyzed is
now walking on her own just a few
months later - friends are hoping the
Town of Strathmore will become another miracle in raising funds to get
the family out of debt and back on
their feet.
Two of the doctors said, you received a miracle you know that right?
and I said no I didnt, a teary-eyed Eaton said. But I did. I got a miracle. I
came out of the coma completely paralysed. I couldnt move. I couldnt even
move my head to the side. So Ive had
to relearn everything. Im doing much
better than I was but Im still dealing
with stamina.

Already on her feet in February, after tackling some gruelling hardships

along the way, Eaton is determined to
get her life back. Most importantly, fitting in some much-desired riding time
with her horse Prince who couldnt
bear to be separated from his owner
and thus became the first horse to participate in hospital visits. Three weeks
ago, Eatons hard work paid off as she
sat back in the saddle for the first time
since the incident.
Despite positive advances, her colon
cancer diagnosis in 2013 and recent
hospital stints has left the family struggling financially. Eaton, who owned
the Quality Canine Centre in Strathmore - known as Stay and Play Grooming was forced to sell her dream business on account of the disease. While
she said she wouldnt reopen another
enterprise like it, the loss of income
has resulted in yet another issue to be
battled.
This girl has been through hell,
said Debbie Murray, who is organizing a fundraiser to help her friend get
out of debt and back onto her feet.
Shes still very weak but her mindset
is clear and shes talking about what
she needs to do to get herself better
and employed. Shes certainly looking
ahead to the future to see what she
can contribute to her lifestyle.
But the claim is easier said than
done for the animal-lover and mother
of one, who can currently only handle 15 minutes of standing or sitting,
struggles with a lack of energy, and is
experiencing pain.
But for Murray, helping to organize
the fundraiser is not only for the benefit of helping out a friend, shes mak-

ing sure the town regains a valuable

contributing member of its community.
Eaton received the Entrepreneur of the
Year award in 2013, and is a member
of Fun Country Riding Club in Strathmore. And with a clean bill of health,
she is now working hard to feel 100
per cent again by next year.
I dont know if the pain will ever
go away, but being alive is worth it,
Eaton said. I never thought of myself
as a strong person, but I beat the odds
and survived. Im going to try and live
the best life I can now.
The community is encouraged to
come out for a fun evening in support
of Eatons recovery.
The Back in the Saddle Cancer
survival fundraiser for Janice Eaton
is held on July 18 at the Strathmore
Legion from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., and
will feature a stick horse barrel racing
competition, prizes, and a silent auction. All money raised will go directly
to Eaton to help with her recovery. For

Annual Festival of
Music a success
KATHIE ZAKRESKY
Festival of Music

This local Festival of Music has been a noncompetitive annual event for 19 years, designed especially to lend opportunity to music
students of any age and level of proficiency to
perform for their families and friends, and the
community in a comfortable and informal atmosphere.
It also provides a test run for those students
preparing for music examinations. Teachers, as
well as anyone who enjoys sharing their own
musical styles, are also encouraged to join in
the fun of performing.
This year the program involved a variety of
artists, including vocal soloists, violin, piano,
piano duet, guitarists, ensembles, local singer/
songwriters performing their own compositions. It was a very enjoyable program, which
encompassed genres including sacred, classical, country, pop, jazz, blues, and movie classics.
The 20th Annual Festival of Music is dated
for May 19, 2016.

Helping Canadians with retirement savings

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT

Parliamentary Report

As Minister of State (Finance) I have been working with Finance Minister Joe Oliver on the announcement that our Conservative Government
intends to consult Canadians on options for allowing voluntary contributions to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). Allowing Canadians the choice
to contribute more to their CPP on a voluntary
basis would increase their retirement savings and
provide another tool in the toolbox for Canadians
who are trying to plan for the future.
Currently, Canadians can use Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSPs) and their Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) to set aside funds for their
retirement years. We are all encouraged to try to
ensure we receive in our retirement years at least
50 per cent of the income we earned while we
were working.
As the Government, we have already provided
the option of Pooled Retirement Savings Plans
(PRSPs) making it possible for workers without an
employer-provided pension plan to join (or create) a pension plan with other workers who do
not have access to a pension plan. This measure
serves the needs of many small businesses that
are prepared to pool their savings and thereby
increase their retirement-savings income.
While our Government is putting forward voluntary measures, the Liberals and the NDP would
impose a job-killing payroll tax, reach into the
pockets of hardworking Canadians to reduce their
take-home pay, and take away Tax Free Savings
Accounts from Canadians. They want to force a

mandatory increase of CPP premiums paid by

workers and employers. The Liberal leader announced his plan to increase contributions that
would amount to $1,000 for every worker earning $60,000 a year. Ontario has already created its
own provincial pension plan that Ontario workers
and employers are now forced to support, reducing paycheques and limiting employers ability to
create more jobs.
Our Government believes in providing choices,
voluntary options, such as the Pooled Registered
Pension Plan and the Tax-Free Savings Account.
We will continue to build on these successes with
new choices to save for the future, not mandatory
payroll tax hikes, which would take money out of
the pockets of hard-working Canadians.
We are also constantly looking at new ways to
create a stronger retirement for Canadians. That
is why in Budget 2015 we are reducing the minimum withdrawal factors for Registered Retirement
Income Funds to allow seniors to preserve more
of their retirement savings so they can better support their retirement income needs. As well, we
are increasing the Tax-Free Savings Account annual contribution limit from $5,500 to $10,000, in
order to provide Canadians at all income levels
with greater opportunity to save on a tax-free basis. We will continue to explore new options that
will allow Canadians to save for their retirement
on a voluntary basis.

Duck, duck, the Bird

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
Some of the SHS staff were talking in the staff
room about fitness, health, and weight control. As
many of you know, I am on a bit of a rollercoaster
with my weight, mainly because of one important
fact: Im quite lazy.
So, one colleague said if your doctor tells you its
time to change your lifestyle its too late!
Wow, I thought, my doctor told me that when I
was in my 30s! How am I still alive?! So, Im back on
the fitness train with less time on the gravy train!
I actually heard a DJ tell a funny thing about her
dad. It turns out hes been given the same advice as
me get using that treadmill! She said her dad has
a unique addition to his workout. He actually walks
with a Rum and Coke held safely in the water bottle
holder. He calls it his Bacardio Workout!
I guess thats one way to approach exercise
find a way to put some fun into it. Of course, it
wouldnt help if you got so plastered that you fell
on the moving tread! That would be a tough thing to
explain at the emergency room!
There are two things I dread now that Im, how
shall we put this, rotund. The first one is obvious.
Wearing a shirt and tie is horrible, as it forces your
chins way up and gives that bullfrog appearance
that is not very fashionable!
The second thing that is tougher now, is tying
shoes. There are times that when I bend over to tie
up my runners, I change my mind until I find a set
of stairs where I can put up my foot! You know its
time for a lifestyle change when youd rather walk
with your laces undone, than risk a stroke bending
over to tie them! Heck, Ive even started to look at
Velcro runners, so nows the time to do something!
We were up in Camrose for a wedding on the
weekend, and I decided to go for a brisk, healthy

walk. Okay, the truth is, I was walking to find a

liquor store! But hey, baby steps, right? At least
I walked! On the way back, a couple with a young
boy and girl were right at the side of turn lane on
a busy street. It turns out that a mama ducks six
babies fell down a storm water grate, and she kept
waddling to it, to try and get them. The couple was
trying to slow down cars turning, and steer them
around the mama duck, and she was getting pretty
frantic about her babies! So, while I was there, the
dad called the police and the City of Camrose. Within minutes, two police cars arrived, and with their
flashers, blocked off part of the lane so that a city
worker would be able to help rescue the ducklings!
I thought what an amazing thing that couple did,
to save these ducklings, and what a great lesson for
their kids.
It reminded me of my own duck incident a couple
of weeks ago. On the road by the Petro Canada, I
stopped my car to let a mama duck cross the road.
I gave plenty of warning, and there was only one
guy behind. I guess this guy wasnt a nature lover
because I got the finger and a blast on his horn for
stopping. Oh well, the duck got across safely and
its not the first time Ive been given the bird! (Ha!
Bird Duck same thing!)
So, you may see me and a host of others walking
the pathways now, and you can bet Ill be keeping
an eye out for the new ducklings and goslings! I
sure hope I dont see that same car again, I could
get a complex!

FROM THE OFFICE OF

KEVIN SORENSON

The Honourable Kevin
Sorenson, Minister of State
(Finance) and Member of
Parliament (Crowfoot) is encouraging local WWII Veterans who took part in the June
6 to August 31, 1944 landing
in Normandy and Provence
to apply for Frances Legion
of Honour Decoration
the highest decoration that
France bestows.
Our Veterans selflessly
fought and sacrificed so that
we may enjoy the peace and
freedoms that we do today,
said Sorenson. It is our duty
to remember and honour
their sacrifices, made on our
behalf and on behalf of future
generations. At the request of
the Government of Canada,
the Government of France
has extended the deadline
for Canadian Veterans, who
helped liberate France during the Second World War, to
receive the French Legion of
Honour until July 10th, 2015.
If you know a living Canadian Veteran of the Second World War who was in
France during the landings in
Provence and on D-Day during the Battle of Normandy,
please call Veterans Affairs
Canada at 1-866-522-2122; or
Email: information@vac-acc.
gc.ca.
It is our goal to ensure that
we recognize every Veteran
who may be eligible for this
award, said Sorenson. Lest
we forget.
Nominations for living Canadian Veterans of the Second
World War who helped liberate France can be submitted
by colleagues, groups/associations, family members and
Veterans themselves. They

should include details on previously awarded decorations,

history of military service,
a small biography, and vital
statistics. In order to process
and meet the French Governments deadline at the end
of July, nominations must be
received by Veterans Affairs
Canada no later than July 10.
Keeping seniors active and
informed
The Honourable Kevin
Sorenson, Minister of State
(Finance) and Member of
Parliament (Crowfoot) is encouraging senior citizen organizations to consider applying under two New Horizons
for Seniors Program (NHSP)
calls for proposals for projects that will keep Canadian
seniors active, engaged and
informed. The application period for both calls for proposals began on May 29 and will
close on July 10.
Our Government recognizes the valuable contribution seniors have made to our
society and the economy,
said Sorenson. By supporting New Horizons for Seniors
Program projects, we are acting to ensure that seniors
maintain a good quality of
life and continue to be active
members of their communities.
The annual NHSP Call for
Proposals for CommunityBased Projects is inviting
organizations to apply for
funding of up to $25,000 for
projects that help empower
seniors to share their knowledge, skills and experiences
with others and support communities by increasing their
capacity to address local issues. More information on
how to apply is available at
Canada.ca/Seniors.

Strathmore Youth will soon

be off on exchange program
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

Almost every year for the past 26 years the Strathmore
Lions Club has participated in the Lions Club Exchange program. This year three Grade 10-12 Strathmore students will
be part of the exchange.
The International Lions Club runs the Youth exchange. The
aim is to allow youths to be introduced to the culture of their
host families. The aim is not for tourism but rather to learn
how others live. The host families will show them around,
introduce them to new things and take care of them.
The teens will spend about a week in a youth camp with
others their age, as well as about two weeks with their host
family.
It was totally eye opening and humbling. You get to see
how great Canada is, said Shyla Kopp, who went to Belgium
last year and will be going to the Netherlands this year.
I love meeting new people and I now have friends from
all over the world.
There are 150 countries to which youth can go. The Strathmore Lions Club usually provides about $1,500 per student
as well as the $375 registration cost. The rest of the money
will have to raised by the students. Two of the three youths
going will have the financial backing from the club but Shyla
will have to finance herself as she went last year.
In the 26 years that the Strathmore Lions have been partaking in the program there have only been two years that
they didnt send anyone. One of those years was because of
the 9/11 attacks, when the International club felt that the
exchange would be better off cancelled that year.
As it is an exchange there will be 19 youths coming to
this Lion club district, which consists of 55 Lions clubs. The
youth will be coming from countries such as Austria, Brazil,
Mongolia and Israel. Eight host families are still needed for
this district.

Two women were transported to the Strathmore hospital
following a collision with a motorcyclist over the weekend
in Wheatland County.
Emergency crews, from Beiseker and Strathmore, attended
the scene on June 6 after responding to a call around 1:30
p.m. The driver of the motorcycle, believed to be in his 50s,
was pronounced dead at the scene. The two women, who
are both in their late 80s, were taken to the hospital by ambulance but were said to be in stable condition. The crash
between the car and motorcycle occurred on Highway 21
and Township Road 272.
The names of the deceased or the injured have not yet
been released.

Minecraft mania returns for the summer

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

Games arent usually seen as a social
development tool, yet the Minecraft Mania program held at the Strathmore Municipal Library was successful and will
return again this summer to help children develop social skills.
The program has been running for a
year and was previously hosted by the
Strathmore library. This program is in
such high demand that the last registration filled up in two minutes. Hosting
the program for the first time, the Marigold Library System is getting involved
so that more children in the community
can take part.
The program is important as it helps
brings people into the libraries and it
brings people together, said Courtney
Gordon, who runs and organizes the
Minecraft nights.
It is a safe, positive place for the kids
where they can be creative.
The game is about breaking and
building blocks. Players can either work
alone or with others to create buildings
and tools while collecting materials.
The program that Gordon has planned
consists of a pre-made world that she
has made and host competitions where
the children can win prizes. The children are either given a few options to

choose from on what they would like

to participate in or Gordon assesses the
skill level and suggests a game.
However, she believes that the program is more than just fun, for it helps
to improve the social skills and confidence of the children who enter the
four- session program in a unique way.
She sees a difference in the childrens
confidence from when they arrive and
when they leave the program.
It is a way of preparing them for
the outside world as they have to solve
problems by working together and
communicating, she said.
Rachel Dick Hughes from the Strathmore library agrees that the game helps
challenge the kids while teaching them
to solve problems.
Some parents dont understand the
game but we see it as an online version
of Lego. It encourages problem solving
and spatial reasoning.
The idea of using Minecraft to help
children develop skills is not unheard
of. Some schools have brought the
game into their lesson plans and the
developers of Minecraft came out with
a Minecraft Education version. This version allows teachers to control the content while teaching their lessons in a
fun and interactive way, as the children
have to work together on the server to
solve problems.

Commitment, taking initiative, and advocating for students,
proved valuable traits for three Strathmore staff members
who were recognized for their efforts by being presented
with one of three distinguished divisional awards.
Three Sacred Heart Academy employees were singled out
by their coworkers and presented with their award by senior
administration and trustees in Strathmore on May 21.
Its a sign of the good work that they do with their kids,
said Deputy Superintendent Gary Christe. When we recog-

nize the staff for their work, they represent all staff. They become a symbol
for all the work thats being done at the
schools.
Jennifer Hall, a Grade 1 teacher, was
the recipient of the Above & Beyond
divisional award, which recognizes
performance of selfless dedication, unquestioning commitment, and superior
skill. Her colleague Deanna White also
walked away with recognition for a
positive helpful caring attitude, contributing to a positive work environment,
and showing initiative and resourcefulness, when she accepted the Power of
One award. Standing out for her exemplary commitment, superior teaching
and building strong relationships, Lisa
Hanson was presented with the Master
Teacher award.
I think its crucial that theyre recognized by our division, said Paulette
Chotowetz, principal at the Sacred
Heart Academy.
I think, what it celebrates, is that
there is so much more to our schools
than what people perceive it to be
sometimes. And, theres more to our
teachers.
The awards banquet recognized three
individuals from each school in the division to receive the awards.
Chotowetz was also pleased with two
other teachers accepting an award this
year. Physical education teacher Genevieve Chisholm received the Edwin Parr
award, which is presented to a first-year
teacher, and she went on to represent
Christ the Redeemer at the Zone awards
banquet as well. Earlier this year, Grade
2 teacher, Lisa Scarpelli also walked
away with the Christian Witness award
in February.
As a principal I think its really important that teachers celebrate each
others gifts, said Chotowetz. They
are all those things. They are masters,
they are above and beyond, they are
the power of one, and theyre just good
people.

Federal government gives back to Canada

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

In anticipation of Canadas upcoming
150 birthday celebration - in two years
time communities and non-profit organizations are receiving hundreds of
millions of dollars to invest back into
capital projects.
The federal government recently
made available two sizeable grants, the
Canada 150 Community Infrastructure
program and the Canada 150 fund each comprised of $150 million.
As representatives from nearly twodozen non-profit organizations and
municipalities met in Strathmore two
weeks ago, to gather information about
the unexpected opportunities, many
showed interest in applying for the infrastructure grant.
Under the grant, western Canada will
receive a whopping $43.5 million, delivered by the Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) on behalf of the
federal government.
In 2017, Canadians from coast to
coast will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation, said Honourable
Michelle Rempel, minister of State for
Western Economic Diversification. As
part of the celebrations, the Canada 150
Community Infrastructure Program will
help to improve and renew public spaces and facilities in communities across
the West, while celebrating our shared
heritage, and leaving a lasting legacy
that strengthens our communities.
Those in attendance on May 27, including representatives from the Strath-

more and District Ag Society, Strathmore

Library, Wheatland County, Cheadle
Lions club, Strathmore Regional Arts
Collective, Standard, and Three Hills,
were quickly made aware of limitations
surrounding the reality of receiving a
chunk of the money. With only a few
days left for grant application submissions, the government is looking for
projects they deem shovel-ready. The
Infrastructure program would require
the project to be community oriented,
non-commercial, and materially complete by March 31, 2018.
The grant will be invested in projects that aim to improve or rehabilitate
cultural and community infrastructure.
Such initiatives include community centres, museums, parks, libraries, recreational facilities, and tourism facilities,
as long as the structures are already
standing.
Although the opportunities are limited for those seeking to create new infrastructure, such as the East Wheatland
school, it proved favourable for other
endeavours that would normally face
greater competition for less available
money. Having already raised $150,000
of their $300,000 goal, the Gleichen
Community Association already fundraised to have a renovation completed
on the inside of their community hall.
However, the roof and exterior are in
desperate need of upgrades, and the association considered applying for the
Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) a provincial grant that is
high in demand. As the organization is
ready to write for a grant, the 150 Infra-

structure program announcement came

at an opportune time.
The other grant isnt as big as
this grant where youre limited on
a $125,000, said Wheatland County
Councillor Alice Booth. Everybody
else is after it, so the chances of getting a large amount, we may have to
wait two years. When this popped up I
felt it was a good opportunity to get all
of the money, so we can do the whole
project.
In comparison to CFEP, the federal grant caps a projects funding at
$500,000.
Community Futures Wildrose also informed community members about the
Canada 150 grant which is dispersed
through the Heritage Fund and focuses
on contributing to local, regional, or
national celebrations for building pride
and attachment in Canada.
Theres grants that come out, but I
would say in terms of capital, especially that infrastructure, you may not see

something like that again, said Wendy

Gerbrandt, CED coordinator at Community Futures Wildrose.. Its huge
economic development. This is a lot of
money coming down into the western
area. We dont know if itll be there in
three years time.
Although there is no specified deadline for the Canada 150 grant, Gerbrandt urges applicants to get their submissions in early for a better chance to
get a larger amount before funds start
being distributed.
While Communities Futures Wildrose
is unable to provide guidance with the
application process, those interested
or require more information are encouraged to contact the organization
to be connected with a funding agent.
Applicants interested in submitting for
the Canada 150 Infrastructure program
have until Wednesday June 17 to submit
their applications. More information regarding the Canada 150 grant streams
can be found at www.canada150.gc.ca.

Strathmore gymnastics phenom Montana Fairbairn made her second consecutive appearance at nationals this year
where she finished fifth Canada-wide
Fairbairn participated in the bar, vault
and beams events but her best finish
was placing fourth on the floor in her
novice age group, with a total score of
53,950.
The Crowther Memorial Junior High
School student came back this year
knowing how much harder she had to
work.
I needed more skill, I needed to
be clean and focus on my landings on
each event, said Fairbairn. Well last
year I was kind of nervous at nationals
when they were watching but this year
I felt 100 per cent confident.
Before she left for nationals, Fairbairn
trained 26 hours a week at the Stampede City Gymnastics Club in Calgary,
where she practiced every routine multiple times until she felt comfortable.
Montana was determined to be the
best at her gym and her hard work paid
off.

wanted to try to be the top in my gym,
and Im the best gymnast in my club
right now, she said.
Fairbairns mom, Jaime, along with
rest of her family, could not be more
proud of what she has been able to accomplish.
The biggest highlight after nationals
was she was just selected for a national
training camp in Montreal this summer, said Jaime. It never ends. Summers not a break. Its still hard work
and keeps us all running.

Education system receives boost

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor
The reversal of previously proposed budget
cuts through a healthy financial infusion into the
education budget by the New Democratic Party
(NDP) government was met with approval among
the provinces school boards, who faced milliondollar shortfalls and prohibited access to financial reserves.
The newly-formed Alberta government recently announced a $103 million spending spree in
favour of education, which under the proposed
Progressive Conservative budget was going to
lose funds in areas including special education,
transportation, planned operations, and maintenance. Alberta school boards were also barred
from accessing their reserves.
To be honest, weve dealt with cuts before but
not being able to access our reserves, that was
very unusual, said Golden Hills School Division
Superintendent Bevan Daverne. They were saying the money you set aside for various projects
and initiatives, now were not going to let you access it. That was a very unusual step and had not
happened ever in a budget situation with school
boards with locally elected school districts in the
province.
NDPs multi-million dollar investment was publicized less than a month after the NDP ended
Albertas 44-year-old Progressive Conservative
reign. The announcement was made at an opportune time, when Golden Hills School Division
(GHSD) prepared to combat a $1.8 million deficit
equivalent to almost two per cent of its eightfigure budget.
With enrolment on the rise and funding based
on the number of students registered, this years
overall budget was projected at $75 million. A
whopping 92 per cent of the budget is provided
through the provincial government, while the remainder is an accumulation of their international
program, a tuition agreement with Siksika First
Nation and other means making up the remaining eight percent.
Pleased with the changes to the cash-strapped

education system, including funding for growth,

Daverne said the money would provide a muchneeded boost to transportation and maintenance.
We just dont get quite enough money that we
need to maintain our schools and to heat them
and to keep the lights on thats another area
where we dip in to our reserves a little bit to
make that work, said Daverne. As a rural board
we cover a large area in Golden Hills, and the
transportation dollars dont quite cover what
we need to do for the kids. We know we have a
deficit there and weve been really short and
challenged in the area of our planned operations,
maintenance, and transportation.
Daverne added that GHSD recorded the largest
growth numbers of any board in the province.
With a lack of funding for growth prior, the board
focused on changing programming and developing relationships with parents. Although the welcomed revisions allow the school board to continue on their current path and support expected
future growth, some wonder where the money
will be coming from.
Im very pleased to see the money appropriated back towards education, but my concern is,
the money actually has to come from somewhere
and right now theres no budget and the government has not indicated where that money is going to come from, said Wildrose Party Shadow
Minister of Finance Derek Fildebrandt.
There are a lot of spending promises, some
of which I would support, but are unfunded. We
have to find out if that money is going to come
from somewhere else, or is it going to come from
Alberta taking on higher taxes, or is it going to
come from higher debt. My preference is that this
money come from areas of lesser spending priority.
The NDP government announced intentions of
requesting approval from the legislature of an interim supply budget to finance government operations until the release of a new budget in the
fall.
For now, however, Alberta school boards are
heaving a sigh of relief and steering their focus
back to the amelioration of Alberta education.

Spartan pride
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Strathmore High School concluded their athletic year with
an awards banquet on June 3.
There were a lot of graduating
players that took pride in playing three memorable years as a
Spartan.
For rugby player Sarah Bruinsma, who won the Forward
of the Year award, accredits to
her development over her high
school tenure with the team.
Ive been working towards
the best player I can be for three
years and to know other people
notice, it just means a lot, said
Bruinsma.
She was really surprised to
get her award considering how
many of her teammates had
great seasons.
There were so many good
players, I cant believe I got it,
she said.
Bruinsma plans to take what
she learned with the rugby team
and possibly pursue a career in
it.
It introduced to me rugby
and an amazing coach like ( Jerry) Flaws. Its definitely a passion of mine and got me started
on a path and pursue it more,
she said.
Bruinsmas teammate, Alyssa
Mulcahy, could not have been
more honoured to get the teams
Spartan Award.
It means a lot to me because
I love the sport and just having
people notice how hard I work
and how much I love the game
is awesome, said Mulcahy.
She credits how much coach

Flaws did for her.

Im so proud to have him as
a coach because he worked so
hard for us and put all his time
and effort in, said Mulcahy.
Coach Flaws admits he was
pretty fortunate to have two
girls that made an impact with
their leadership.
These Grade 12s this year
just worked so hard, they did so
much, and at times carried us,
said Flaws.
It is not often you find a high
school athlete that plays multisports and makes a difference
in every one of them.
Karly Larson was always a difference maker on the playing
field; whether it was making a
game-deciding basket or having
a solid run, she did it all.
For her efforts she took home
the MVP for basketball and
track and field.
It meant a lot to her just to
have excelled at the sports but
above all the friendships she
made.
It means a lot going through
school being a part of teams and
having them as friends, not just
in class, but your teams as well
because those friendships last a
lot longer than relationships on
the court, said Larson.
Larson admits that for being
a small school, they displayed
a lot of passion for their sports
teams.
Dion Galandy had the privilege of coaching Larson in
basketball and could not say
enough about how special of a
player she was.
It was special, shes definitely
been an asset for us and shes a

great kid too, said Galandy.

He added that Karly was
looked upon to strategize from
time to time make out the plays
for the team to execute on the
court.

Bisons cap off memorable

year with players awards
JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

The 2014-2015 UFA Bisons capped off a magical season with their awards banquet on June 5 at
Strathmore High School.
The team, along with their parents, had one last
chance to reflect on what a memorable season it
was.
For Rookie of the Year winner, Gary Haden, his
success would not have been achievable had it not
been for his teammates
I couldnt have done it without the coaches
giving me the ice time and without my linemates,
theres no way I wouldve won this award, said
Haden. All the hard work that our whole team
puts in and nominate me for something like that,
its a great feeling.
Having built lasting memories, the rookie is considering coming back next year for another shot at
Telus Cup.
The speedster also mentioned his mindset is to
act as a role model next year.
It would be good, thats one of the reason Id
come back is to lead the younger group of kids and
show them what it takes to win, said Haden.
The near-perfect netminding of Kurtis Chapman
played a pivotal role in getting the Bisons to the
Telus Cup and for his efforts he picked up the
Strathmore Times Player of the Year as well as the
teams MVP award.

Chapman felt honoured to be the recipient of the

awards.
It felt really good just knowing that everythings
gone really good but it wasnt just an individual effort, everyone was valuable at certain points in the
playoffs, said Chapman.
He credits the award to the tremendous family
support he received all season.
Head coach Dan MacDonald, who retired down
from his position, added that the award recipients
chosen for the awards were commendable.
We really felt that theyre deserving of the award
and I think when you win a Pacific Championship
and you win a South Championship, a provincial
(title) and all those things, thats deserving in itself, said MacDonald. They worked their tails off,
its as simple as that. Theyre hard-working guys,
they care about their teammates, community and
so you win with good people and we had good
people here.
Other players who walked away with recognition
included: Barrett Sheen who took home the Most
Improved Player, Jordan McConnell with the Top
Scorer and Kyle Gordon received Top Defensive
Forward.
The Neil Glionna Award for Dedication, Perseverance and Sportsmanship went to captain Shane
Fraser, Will Conley got the Hardest Working Bison
and Josh Bishop was awarded Top Defenseman.
Sebastien Kilcommons was the recipient of the
league scholarship of $1,500.

to the Kings organization having also

spent several years in the junior ranks
as a player, coach, manager and owner
throughout Western Canada.
He is looking forward to working
with a team that has a great community behind them.
What I hope to change in the organization by saying in the short period
of time Ive been with the team, I think
Strathmore is pretty lucky in having
guys like Mike Langen and some of
the other board members that I met
for the first time the other day, said
Peters.
I think theyre planning to do a
good job and have an excellent hockey
team.
Peters plans to step in and provide
structure to the team and to preach patience in the process.
I think one of the key words in
hockey, you should never get too high
or you should never get too low, so it
always requires a lot of patience, said
Peters.
The Chestermere resident has certain style that he will want to see from
the team and hopes the team will take
his philosophy into consideration.
I like a real good skating, quick
hockey hockey club, said Peters.
Thats what I like to see is kids mobility and really like to see kids that
have an open mind because if you
have a hockey player that has a closed
mind, youre not going get to get far
with them.
Kings head coach Jeremy Blumes
has known Peters for a little while
now and is looking forward to what
he can bring to the table.
He admits that it will be valuable to
have some one of Dales knowledge
on the team.
Ive known Dale from the five years
with the Royals and he was the manager for other teams, had some conversations with him, said Blumes.
When the Strathmore thing came
along, I thought it would be a natural fit and asked him if we would be
interested and luckily for us he is on
board.
Blumes admits that it will be good
having him around the rink more and
open up more opportunities for the organization.
Its going to be good in helping us
secure sponsorship, he said.
The dressing room were looking
at for the upcoming season as well
as providing outside support for our
players.
Peters currently owns the Save my
License in Chestermere along with his
wife Cathy. His son Jeffrey works in
the business while is other son Dalynne just graduated medical school.

Spartans succed at provincials

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Strathmore High School Spartans
Track and Field team finished 15th out
59 Schools at the 3A track and field provincials in Lethbridge on June 5-6.
Graduating participant Kyle Foster
captured bronze in the 4x400m relay
and only won it by one stride to the finish line. This was his first time on the
podium.
It was really back and forth throughout the whole race, said Foster.
I got this decent lead on the third leg
but I got really noodle-legged at the last
100 metres and he (Nick of Holy Trinity Academy) caught up to me and so I
only had a five metre lead on him.
It was really on the fourth leg that
Foster felt that one last gasp would propel him to the bronze medal.
He felt the emotions running through
him in the latter stages of the event.
Its our fourth leg and he ended up
getting past me and Im freaking out at
this point and just within the last 100
metres, he passed the guy who passed
him and we just barely took it by 3/10
of a second, said Foster.
Foster added that having consistency
on their team was key to coming out of
the heap with a medal.
Nick was a fourth leg and had been
fairly consistent in all three years of
high school, said Foster.
He always goes for 4x400s, so I think
it was that previous experience he had
that really pushed him through. We were
all of course at the finish line freaking
out, it might have been us cheering him
on, and he just barely took it.
He felt pretty honoured to come
through in his last chance with the Spartans considering it was his last crack at
a high school athletics medal.
I did a little bit more training this
year, just in hopes to get a medal this
year and it paid off, said Foster.
Foster also placed 10th in the Senior
Mens 200 metre.
Karly Larson placed fifth in the Senior
Womens High Jump, and sixth in the
Senior Womens 400 metre.
She felt that her placing was about
where she wanted to be by the end of

provincials.
I jumped as high as I could have,
the next height I wasnt able to clear as
good and I hadnt had any missed prior
to that so I finished as high as I could,
said Larson.
However, it was somewhat intimidating competing with other girls that do
these track events all year round.
They come to high school provincials and its just kind of another meet
for them but for me and Kyle its just
our one meet of the year, said Larson.
Its always intimidating seeing the
girls that are club and they know what
theyre doing.
She felt that energy she gained on the
track was just from listening to the competitors in the tent and learning from
what they were saying.
Larson admits her favourite part
about her last provincials was watching
other participants set records, but her
most memorable moment was being in
the last individual event of provincials.
Coach Carrie Westgard was impressed
with the commitment to staying in
shape by both Larson and Foster.
Well I know both Kyle and Karly
trained really hard this year, they put in
a lot of extra time personally on their
own, which was nice to see, said Westgard.
Kyle put in four, sometimes five days
a week, and we only asked them to
come twice a week. He knew there was
a possibility he could medal.
She admits that it meant more for
just normal school athlete to go into
the competition because the athletes
worked so hard for what theyve accomplished.
Theyre not doing this 24/7, seven
days a week, theyre not a track club
kid. When they finish with a medal, I
think it means more because theyre
work is paying off, said Westgard.
Other Spartans that had solid showings at provincials were Erin Warrack
placing ninth in the Senior Womens
Shot Put, Trygve Many Guns also getting
bronze in Junior Mens Shot Put, Mason
Kennett getting seventh in intermediate
in Mens Javelin, the team of Misi Varga,
Scott Desserre and J.J. Sleigh-Pelly got
fourth in the Junior Mens 4x100 metre.

Reds looking
for identity in
Norwest League
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Reds midget triple-A

ball club is still looking for answers to
their struggles in the NorWest League.
Despite being in the lower half of the
heap, the team remains positive and
working hard to correct the simple mistakes that were occurring on the field.
Its the teams first year in the league,
so its kind of adapting to it I guess, a lot
of really good competition, said catcher
Scott Desserre. We still have guys gone
to academy. When we get them back,
itll help us out a lot.
Desserre feels that if the team can
limit some errors and focus more on the
diamond, they will be able to see results
and continue to improve in the batters
box.
I think we just need to bear down
on our defense, said Desserre. Too
many stupid errors and stupid mistakes,
not thinking all the time. Our hitting
has been coming, but weve got to really work hard, have good practices and
hopefully turn it around.
Veteran shortstop Jayse Wilson admitted that it has been a lot tougher with
more games, but noticed that the players are building character.
Guys are keeping their heads in the
game more, up on the bench, were
starting to bear down a little better and

not making as many errors, but errors

have really killed us this year.
Wilson said they need to get players
to the home plate, which has been a
struggle of late.
Weve got to take better approaches to the plate, said Wilson. Last few
games weve stranded a lot of runners
on base, which kind of killed us, 11 in
the last five innings the other night.
Reds Manager Ryan Kennedy adds
that the team has matured but a lot can
still be done if the team is to improve on
their 3-9 record.
He has seen glimpses of the players
being able to compete in the league.
Guys are understanding that they can
compete in the league, said Kennedy.
This coming week will be the first
time with our whole team together so
I think the guys are realizing they can
compete with the competition a little, I
think thats the difference from the beginning until now.
Kennedy and his staff have been
working the boys hard at practice to
push them to their full potential and
develop a successful strategy, including
trying players at different positions.
The Reds played a home game on
June 10 against the Calgary Rockies (result unavailable as of press time). The
next game is June 13 (3 p.m.) against
the Fort McMurray Oil Giants at Kinsmen Park.

MacDonald steps away from Bisons

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
After two fulfilling years and leading the Bisons
to their first ever Telus Cup appearance, head coach
Dan MacDonald felt it was time to hand the reins
over to someone with a fresh mindset on the game.
The Red Deer native first started coaching when
his university coach asked him to help him coach
his team and then his career took off from there.
Prior to the Bisons, he coached the Okotoks Oilers of the AJHL, the Red Deer College Kings and
the triple-A midget team in Red Deer, leading them
to five national championship appearances.
Now, with 30 years and numerous success stories
under his belt, MacDonald has chosen to take some
time off to ponder his future in sports.
He hopes his absence will make room for someone that is younger and full of enthusiasm.
I liked the challenge every year of making a
team better and I really enjoyed making a program
grow, said MacDonald. Ive been associated with
half a dozen programs that started out weak and to
build them to a point where you can say you did
something special.
MacDonald got the call for the Bisons gig from
the Foothills Hockey Association two seasons ago.
He was instantly on board to help the development
process of the billet program that was put in place.
Having always had their sights set high, MacDonalds teaching-style coaching philosophy aided
players in becoming better all-around individuals
on the ice.
I think he really helped out on the skill aspect
of the game like passing the puck, teaching us how
to skate better, just the basics of hockey, said captain Shane Fraser, who played both his campaigns
with MacDonald. If youre not doing it up to your
best standard, hell let you know and stop the drill.
Defenseman Josh Bishop was one of the players
who benefitted from MacDonalds coaching style.
[He taught] us defensemen that its not about
making the big checks, its just about taking the
hands and getting in on a guy and slowing them
down more than anything, said Bishop.
While the team was uncertain about their new
coach, his approach soon became contagious.
After last year and this year, it really goes to
show that he knows what hes doing and hes been
there and done that, said Bishop. I think once the
players trusted him, it really helped us out a lot.
MacDonald hadnt solely focused on hockey in
his coaching career, as he has coached many other

efforts with the team at the Bisons awards banquet on June 5.

sports, including volleyball and baseball.

MacDonald does not accept losing very well and
that is why the players got pushed harder, because
he wants the young men to become not only better
players but even better people.
Im not a good loser, I always push the kids real
hard and I look to see that we try to get the best
out of them, so that we can be very competitive,
said MacDonald. I think from a teaching perspective, it gives them something to build their own life
skills on working hard to get better.
He reflected on his two seasons with the herd
the winning streak that started in January was the
moment that stuck out for him.
While feeling bittersweet about his decision,
theres no better way to leave the Bisons than on
a high note.
That 12-game winning streak was really special
because the way we won and how we won and fact
that it lead us where we wanted to go, said MacDonald. We had quiet confidence, you always ask
that of a player, organization and sport.
MacDonalds plan is to stay involved in sports by
helping develop other organziations.

WHOS PREACHING TO YOU?

I was reading a book on
preaching this past week when
the author wrote something that
really caught my attention. In
fact, it made such an impression
I thought I would share some of it
with you.
We know that preaching is a big
part of most, if not all, churches.
Someone stands up and explains
certain scriptures. We can read
places in the Bible where specific
sermons were preached. Preaching also is done with a belief that
God speaks through the Bible and
through the preacher to tell the
listener what he wants to have
them learn.
What caught my attention was
this authors statement that Satan
also preaches. Zach Eswine in
Preaching to a Post-Everything
World says, Satan has been
preaching throughout history as
well.(p. 233) Wow! He shares an
example from the Bible where Satan was preaching, or at least
giving a message to someone.
The example comes from the
newly formed Garden of Eden in
Genesis Chapter 3 where Satan
comes to Adam and Eve and says,
Did God really say you must not
eat from any tree in the garden?
(Genesis 3: 1)
Satan raises suspicion about
Gods authority and credibility. He

also adds to what God has said.

Rather than preaching his message, Satan preaches a distorted
message from God. He questions
that God actually said they were
not to eat, when God clearly
did say that. He then questions
whether they were prohibited
from eating from any tree. He
is going beyond what God said,
because he clearly knows God
said there was just the tree of
the knowledge of good and evil
that they were to avoid.
Eswine gives a few more examples from this story to show that
Satan does preach. While Satan
gives a message, it is always a
message distorting the truth. He
delivers a message, and he gets
people to act as a result of the
effect of his message.(p. 232)
Sometimes people say they have
voices talking to them. Sometimes say they have a feeling
that directs them. This warning
from Eswine and from Genesis
3 should make us question the
voices we hear. Is this a voice I
want to follow? Is this the voice
of God? Does this voice speak in
line with the rest of scripture? In
any preaching, these would be
good questions. May God protect
us from listening to sermons by
Satan.

Teaching a healthy lifestyle

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Water Polo Club is

gaining popularity among Strathmores
youth a short time after launching in
the community.
The sport is well known in big events
such as the Summer Olympic Games
and the International University Sports
Federation.
The club, which started in May, has
noticed an increase of youth trying out
the sport.
Water polo teaches teamwork, fundamental movement and sport skills,
as well it improves agility, balance and
coordination, said founder Krista Hill.
Most importantly (it) offers our Strathmore children and youth the opportunity to stay active and healthy.
Hill and her husband Kevin started
the club after their 13-year-old daughter Julianna took a keen interest in the
sport, knowing the benefits it would
provide to the youth in town.
The club decided to introduce water
polo with an eight-week introductory
program: Water Polo 101. The program
is for boys and girls, ages 10-14.
For the month of May and June, Hill
has been fortunate enough to round up
some players that made a career out of
water polo and moved on to the NCAA
ranks.
She is hoping that the players will enhance the younger players skills with
their knowledge of the game.
Having NCAA players come out and
teach the kids has been instrumental
in their development. The interaction is
also promoting female sports.
Weve had some other NCAA girls
come out, theyre happy to do that because they want to give back to the
sport because its made them so happy,
said Dayna Christmas, executive director for the Alberta Water Polo Association.
The coaches for the month of May
were Courtenay and Ashley Menard,
twin sisters who are three-time national
gold medalists.
The month of June has Calgary natives and San Jose State Spartans play-

ers Cara Robinson and Rae Lekness

coming and practicing the game with
the Strathmore players.
Hill said having these types of players come to teach kids is not only beneficial for the players, but also for the
Alberta Water Polo Association.
For small town Strathmore, we are
bringing in some impressive talent with
the help of Dayna and the AWPA, said
Hill.
She encourages the kids because the
opportunities to compete nationally or
internationally are not out of reach.
Some parents expressed interest in
starting a club, said Christmas. Weve
come out a few times to do free clinics every summer and what we thought
would be fun is to see if we could drum
up enough interest to come on Tuesday nights for a couple of months to get
ready for the fall season.
On June 2, Kyra Christmas and Cara
Robinson practiced with the young
players at the Strathmore Aquatic Centre and were hoping to develop the
players knowledge even further to succeed in the sport.
Just coming out to small towns
around Calgary is special because it
teaches them that they can go far if they
just keep going and keep pushing for
what they want, said Kyra.
Calgarys Cara Robinson, who just
completed her first season with the San
Jose Spartans, is really taking what she
has learned in her child and adolescent
major and transferring it into what she
teaches the players.
Its really awesome that I can play
water polo after the club level, and Im
a child development major at school, so
its really great that I can combine what
Im learning in school and the pool and
bring it to practices like this to combine
my two passions, said Robinson.
The club will hold summer sessions
in hopes of attracting more interest before the fall season comes to see if kids
want to eventually form a team and
play in a city league in Calgary.
If you are interested in the Strathmore Water Polo Club, you can go to
their Facebook page or e-mail them at
kristadpb@gmail.com.

With all that is going on in the world today the Bank of Canada has lowered its prime lending
rate several times consecuitively. What does this mean for the citizens of Strathmore? Well
now is a great time to buy a new home. When negotiating the purchase price of your new
home people dont often think about what the real cost of the home is because most people
are so focused on the purchase price they forget about the price to finance. First time home
buyers the time is now dont wait. In todays low interest market the overall price of the
home is effectively reduced by the interest rate itself. Call me today and get preapproved. I will
let you know how much you can afford so that you can go out house hunting
